Brent Burns gives San Jose a gamebreaker on the backend
When Brent Burns was acquired from the Minnesota Wild this offseason he filled a need the Sharks have had for the last two postseasons-- a number two defenseman who could help take some responsibility off the shoulders of Dan Boyle, provide high-quality minutes on either the Sharks first or second pairing, and contribute offensively from the defensive position.
At 6'5 230 pounds Burns was an attractive add from a physical standpoint. He gave San Jose more size on the backend, an ability to handle opposing team's forwards in the corners, and deliver swift but legal punishment in front of the net. His greatest contribution to the team was expected to be his ability to generate offensive scoring chances through his sensational skating abilities and sizzling shot. Somewhere in the middle were questions concerning his defensive ability, knocks he carried over from his time in Minnesota where he transitioned from forward to defenseman after being drafted as a forward in 2003.
Seven games in, and the returns have been excellent for San Jose.
The first thing people mention when they speak about Burns is his world-class slap shot, which approaches Shea Weber, Zdeno Chara, and Sheldon Souray levels of firepower when he gets time to tee it up. However, the most effective tool in his arsenal is his wrist shot-- Burns has an uncanny ability to put the puck on net quickly and powerfully at a moment's notice, giving opposing forwards and defensemen little time to dive into shooting lanes and disrupt the shot. This has resulted in a few near misses and some juicy rebounds that goaltenders have found difficult to handle. Furthermore, his ability to move at the blueline and open up a path to the net resembles that of Ian White, the best defensemen on the team last season when it came to horizontal skating with the puck.
Burns season has already gone through a miniature transformation of sorts, or at least given Sharks fans a nice overview of his abilities. The first three games of the season were wild affairs-- Burns streaking up the ice with the puck, pinching aggressively in the offensive zone, going for the grand slam play-- but also presented the defensive mistakes that were a concern heading into the season. Burns made his fair share of mistakes in his own end during the first three games of the year, some glaring and others subtle but equally detrimental.
He was a wild stallion running free in McLellan Ranch, tearing across the landscape with abandon. He was getting used to a new system, a new partner, a new team, and taking his lumps along with dishing out a few of his own.
But following the 4-2 loss to St. Louis on October 15th, you could see things begin to click. He was sensational offensively in San Jose's 3-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, scoring a 5v3 goal after a feed from Joe Thornton slid into his wheelhouse and nearly tying the game in the dying seconds of the third period. Most importantly however, after three games where he looked out of sorts in the defensive zone, Burns began to put the pieces together in the defensive end as well.
Over the last four games Burns has been steady defensively, with those mistakes becoming fewer and fewer each game. Playing alongside Marc-Edouard Vlasic definitely helps of course, as Vlasic has been the best Sharks blueliner on the road trip by leaps and bounds in the defensive end, but Burns' knack for squeezing out players along the boards and recognizing when to jump into the play has only improved as his time with the Sharks has gone on. There will still be some mistakes as the year progresses; Burns is likely at least a year away from truly becoming a reliable defensive presence that can go against opposing teams top players on a nightly basis and avoid coming out in the red. But his progress thus far has already been a noticeable, and welcome, improvement from where he began the season.
It all comes back to offense with Burns however, and his underlying numbers truly highlight just how effective he has been. His CORSI number, which measures shots directed towards the net while a player is on the ice, looks more like a typo than reality. Amongst all eight Sharks defenseman who have suited up this year, Burns has a 41.7 relative CORSI. The second highest defenseman on the team? Marc-Edouard Vlasic sporting an 11 flat, with every other defenseman on the team having negative totals. Huh?
What this means is that Burns is swinging the pendelum so wildly in his direction, he's shifting the team average to a place where everyone but Vlasic (his partner) is "below average" at driving the play in the right direction and helping his teammates put the puck towards the net. For those people attempting to wrap their head around advanced stats this is undoubtedly confusing. Let's look at something that, while essentially the same type of metric, should be easier to interpret.
Five on five shot differential per 60 minutes is easy to understand-- you take the amount of shots on the opponents net, subtract the amount of shots on the Sharks net, adjust for ice time, and get a snapshot of which blueliner is on the ice for the most shots. And once again, Burns comes out smelling like roses. He has a +28.4 shot differential, first on the team. His partner, Vlasic, comes in second at +16.0. The rest of the list is as follows: Boyle (+10.4), White (+9.1), Murray (+4.8), Demers (+3.7), Vandermeer (-1.9), and Braun (-10.9).
No one is even coming close to Burns-- he's driving the play offensively, and has been one of the most influential players in getting the Sharks shot totals to where they are right now. Sample size, zone starts, and quality of competition numbers are definitely helping him out here but, even with those caveats, the numbers are staggering.
San Jose has long been an organization which has played a distinctly methodical, low-tempo style. Dan Boyle, Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Ryane Clowe, Logan Couture, and Martin Havlat are all excellent players who can give opposing teams crippling migraines in their own various ways, whether it be on offense or defense. Nearly every single one of these players is a better two-way player than Burns is right now.
But Burns just has that spark, that intangible voodoo magic, which defies explanation. That ability to singlehandedly change the complexion of a power play, a game, or a series, that someone outside of Antti Niemi and maybe Logan Couture just don't have right now. It's having a set power play entry dedicated to you, where the team is clearing out the neutral zone almost like an NBA game, passing you the puck as you hit the zone with speed, and saying go make a play. It's a blend of raw athletic talent and a willingness to play on that precipice dividing risk and reward, the ease at which he transitions up the ice and the utter force at which he directs shots towards the net. Burns has "it" in spades; and whatever "it" may be, it exists in only a special few.
Burns isn't even the best defenseman on the team right now-- that honor still resides with Dan Boyle. Marc-Edouard Vlasic, the perpetual non-perceptual backbone, is the reason Burns will have so much success this year and into the future. Without him, this article probably doesn't occur. Players like Thornton, Boyle, and Marleau are undoubtedly more important to the team, and legitimate Stanley Cup contention doesn't come without players like the red-hot Pavelski or the exciting Havlat.
But Burns is a guy who, when a team is trailing by a goal in the third period, you get the puck.
Because every time he does, it seems like magic is right around the corner.

It was interesting that McLellan said earlier this year that it was Burns’ big body that could help clear out the Sharks own zone that would help the team the most this year. Just knowing him from his Minnesota days, he always seemed like an offensive defenseman who hadn’t completely figured out the game in his own zone. The coaching staff said the exact opposite…. they like his big shot and offensive instincts, but his big frame and two-way game is why they traded for him and gave him a 5-year extension.

Sure took a while for Burnzie to find his A game.
But once he did? Holy shit, did the Shark ever go on a tear! When we were in the doldrums of 1-3, we needed a guy to step up. Burns was one of the most obvious guys who did, and we’re 3-0 on a six-game road trip. I think it’s very difficult to argue that this isn’t the best Sharks team ever put on ice.

Haha yess
This is exactly why i just traded to get Burns on my fantasy team.
Even in the beginning of the season when he wasn’t playing so well, it was obvious how huge a presence he had on our backend, and yeah his advanced stats have just been insane all season.
This is without a doubt in my mind the best Sharks team we’ve ever iced. I wasn’t worried for a second during our 3 game losing streak. We were making TONS of mistakes and yet we never lost by more than a goal (not counting empty netters) and we remained at the top of the league in shots for and shots allowed – that is insane! Even at our worst we still were doing pretty well. Wait until we see this team at it’s best, it’s gonna be awesome.
The CORSI numbers are hilarious
I knew that play tended to go to the opposing teams end while he was on the ice, but holy crap.

He’s been putting up videogame numbers thus far. We’ll see how it looks around game 15 or so once we get some more data, but his CORSI is just ridiculous.

The best thing about Burns
He’s been so-so (but improving) in the defensive end and dynamic/scary on the offensive side, he’s really fun to watch!
But to me, the best thing about him is that, at just 26, he has quite a bit of room to improve and grow his game – if he continues to work on his defense and if he and Vlasic continue to gel/find chemistry as D partners, he could be one of the best D-men in the NHL.
Burns/Vlasic should end up being one of the top defense pairing in the league and I hope they anchor the Sharks blueline for many, many years!
Agreed...
not only has he not reached his so called prime years yet, but what blows me away even more is that Burns has only been a defenseman for… what, 4 years now? So his upside is tremendous!
He was converted from forward to defense when he turned pro in the 03/04 season, so it’s been about 7 years. But ya, lots of upside on the D side.
That shot of his...
Really gives me chills sometimes. This guy is perfect in San Jose. Minutes eater to not overwork Boyle? Check! Offensive abilities on the blueline? Check! The Ying to Pickles Yang? Check! Quickly becoming a fan favorite due to personality off the ice? Check!
Yeah sometimes he goes deep into the offensive zone and leaves space for a possible breakaway but most of the time Vlasic can read that. He’s a huge body that isn’t afraid to get in there and make plays. I’m loving this guy!
But I think a lot of fans are thinking Brent Burns will be our Savior… I really hope they don’t have expectations on him that huge because let’s remember he’s just one great piece of an even greater puzzle. Wow, that was pretty deep huh? ;)

I thought it wouldn't happen
But I have found a suitable replacement for Kyle Wellwood as my favorite player of the season (so far).
But as much as I love Brent Burns and was all for this trade...
I do still miss Setoguchi… I wish we could have kept him as a Shark too.
Already dropped from the first line in Minnesota, looks like his San Jose Dog House was a mobile home.

No, Couture is a bust.
Setoguchi is just inconsistent. I think it’s all mental with Seto… he tends to put himself in a doghouse, if you will. He gets to the point where he’s trying way too hard, and as a result he just looks lost out on the ice. And then he’ll get it back again, before the cycle repeats.

No, Couture is a bust.
Umm I wouldn’t say that because its way too soon to determine that and all the signs hes been showing, dating back to his last 100 games or so, doesn’t point to that either.
It’s an old joke, when a bunch of people were calling him a bust when he didn’t make the big club immediately out of juniors. And then he didn’t score a hat trick in the preseason/his first games in the NHL. And then he didn’t even win the Calder! Such a bust.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
No way. He’s just making a funny joke.
Setoguchi hasn’t looked bad at all in Minnesota, and to be honest, has actually looked better than Heatley in the last couple games. They’ve moved him off the top line in order to spread out the scoring depth because Minnesota has just so much trouble scoring goals. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back up on the top line by the end of the game tonight, or at least takes some shifts with Koivu and Heatley.

Heatley did nothing as a Shark to warrant the animosity you have towards him.
Approximately eight warnings, a couple dozen censorships, and one ban in the last month and counting.
Why is he a douche? Because he didn’t want to go to Edmonton? Well, if he’s a douche there’s an even bigger douche who gave him the contract and gave him the flexibility to waive and un-waive his NTC.

I don't personally dislike the guy...
But he has a sordid past with the NHL. He drove drunk (forgivable, despite what happened). Then he wanted out of Atlanta. Then he wanted out of Ottawa. Then he didn’t want to go to Edmonton, AFTER the trade had been hammered out. I don’t think he did anything but good in San Jose, but actions like that don’t exactly show a kind-hearted philanthropist.

Um, no
First, there’s plenty of industries (like the startup scene in our very own tech industry) where people bounce around spending no more than a couple years in any given job. Okay, maybe not plenty, but there are some.
Second, he quit Atlanta because of some pretty scaring personal trauma so really he’s only decided to ask to be traded cause he didn’t like it somewhere once. There’s tons of players who have done that and we don’t crucify them.
That metaphor breaks down very quickly, because:
1. He can’t change jobs whenever he wants, because he is contractually bound to his team. He’s an employee of the NHL.
2. He never quit his “job,” he asked to be moved to a different department.
3. He only exercised the rights that both he and his boss agreed he should have.
Besides, the tech industry here in the Bay Area would not bat an eye at someone who worked at one place for 4 years, another place for 4 years, and the last place for 2 years. I imagine most companies wouldn’t see that as an issue.

The driving drunk is my biggest pet peeve about that story – he wasn’t drunk. He was below the legal limit. The only reason it’s ever mentioned is because “driving drunk causes tragic accident” is a more sensational story than “tragic accident”.
And you know what? Wanting to leave a team isn’t terribly uncommon. It’s just that Ottawa totally fucked him on the PR front.
Oh really?
The more you know. So I can’t fault him for the traffic accident. But still. I can accept wanting to leave one team, it’s not unreasonable to say, “Hey, fuck you guys.” and peace. But this guy did it to three teams. He’s alienated 10% of the league.

Atlanta doesn't count.
And the edmonton bit wasn’t his fault – he didn’t send all the stories to the media, that was Ottawa management in an attempt to coerce him into doing what they wanted. So he said “fuck you” to them and invoked the NTC.
Of course, Ottawa totally won that PR battle.
3 teams? I only count one…
He left Atlanta because of the emotional aspect of playing there. I don’t blame him at all. Yes, he did request to leave Ottawa… and the whole thing got blown out of proportion.
But you count the Sharks among those 3 teams? He got traded for a player who the Sharks would fit the team better. That’s not a “Hey, fuck you guys” moment for Heatley. That’s a “Oh fuck…” moment, and a slap to the face.

You can’t blame Heatley for the Edmonton non-trade. Any semi-competent GM would’ve checked with Heatley before “hammering out a trade”. On top of that, Heatley gave Murray a list (it was a short one) of teams he’d accept a trade to, shockingly, Edmonton was not on that list.
Also – he wasn’t driving drunk, at least get the facts straight.
It was part of his contract
to be able to veto trades to a certain short list of teams. It’s a fairly common clause (I think even a few Sharks have it). He had every right to invoke it and refuse the trade to Edmonton.
How dare he sign a contract with a NTC and use it!

Thanks for clarifying, Mr. Plank...
because I have read for years now how the fans jump on Seto and his inconsistency. And I don’t disagree that he’s streaky. But he’s done better than, say, Patrick Marleau after their respective first 4 years in the league:
Marleau
76 goals, 65 assists = 141 pts and +13
Setoguchi
84 goals, 75 assists = 159 pts and +18
Seto also played in 50 fewer games during this span. His best years are still ahead of him, and I believe he will be a significant player for Minny in the future.
Oh wait...
After thinking about this a bit, Marleau entered the league at 18, Seto as a 21 year old for his 1st full season. That’s definitley an advantage to play in the minors first. Still, Seto’s numbers isn’t anything to snicker at.
The early Sharks Marleau played with don't compare to the current Sharks either.
Patty broke in with Owen Nolan, Jeff Friesen , and an end-of-career Tony Granato as the only guys really expected to do more than him. That team had some all-time great Sharks, but Patty had high expectations and a lot of league attention.
Seto broke in with Patty, Jumbo, JR, Cheech, Pavs, Clowe, and even Goc, Mitchell, and Michalek expected to be ahead of him. Seto was a bit under the radar with one of the best collections of talent the Sharks have had.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!

Burn’s offensive propensity from the blueline is very refreshing, but I think his size and physicality is much more valuable. The sharks D has either been undersized (Boyle, White, Demers) or plays smaller than they are (Huskins). Bringing in Burns gives the sharks another large D man, in addition of Murray, who can help clear the crease and won’t get moved off the puck as easily. I believe that Minnesota did a poor job of developing Burns as a defensemen and he will have the opportunity to build a proper “hockey IQ” in SJ. He has the size, skating ability, and slapshot, now he just needs to learn how to read the play. I also think he can stop looking to provide as much offense this season and focus on defense considering the sharks aren’t strapped for goalscoring like Minnesota was. All signs point to this being a good environment for Burns to develop into a top defensemen.

I completely disagree with the above statement – Jacques Lemaire has not only one of the best “teaching coaches” in the NHL, he is also one of the best when it comes to defensive hockey. What he did w/ Burns in the 5 years he was there is absolutely incredible.

I completely agree with the above statement.
The one beneficial aspect for Burns playing in San Jose is the fact that he doesn’t have to be “The Man” like he did in Minnesota. There’s a lot of quality players and defensemen that help ease the burden off his shoulders.
Like you said, what Lemaire did with Burns in the 5 years was incredible.

I am as excited to watch Burns as I thought I'd be
He is dynamic, a bit iffy in his own zone (Vlasic has that more than covered…he’s been phenomenal), but awesome in the offensive zone.
Most of the team seems to be waking up…bottom-six, maybe except for Desi, looks good. Pavs is awesome, Havlat is a great player and he seems to have woken Couture up, Thornton looks good again. Niemi has looked much better the last few games.
However, players like Murray, Boyle, Marleau, and Clowe as well as our 3rd pairing guys seem to be struggling still. I will give the 3rd pairing guys a pass since they still need to gel and build chemistry (whether it’s White-Demers or Vandermeer-Braun). Marleau had a bad case of the flu, but seriously, wake up already…please. And Clowe, he’s making some big-time bone-headed decisions that are making me question his hockey IQ again…and I still think this shows that he is still very inconsistent, but hopefully he gets hot soon.
I am excited to see how we perform vs. one of the best teams in the NHL on Friday…Go Sharks!
Go Sharks!

No, this is all 5v5 (so it doesn’t even count 4v4 OT).
For future reference— if I’m writing about CORSI, or pretty much any advanced stat, assume it is at 5v5 unless specifically stated otherwise.

64.8 Ozone %
I’m not sure how to give that number proper context, but it’s the third highest for defensemen on the team (not counting Vandermeer/Braun) and last year he had 42.6 Ozone% (third most for Wild defenseman with >50 games played) with a 9.5 relative CORSI.

Like I mentioned in the article, those numbers are definitely helping him:
No one is even coming close to Burns— he’s driving the play offensively, and has been one of the most influential players in getting the Sharks shot totals to where they are right now. Sample size, zone starts, and quality of competition numbers are definitely helping him out here but, even with those caveats, the numbers are staggering.
Regardless, those numbers are so gaudy it’s impossible not to take note.

Well, chicken or egg, really.
Is his CORSI inflated by offensive-zone starts, or is he getting those offensive starts because his CORSI is high?
Realistically the two feed into one another.
Is it too early to put Havlat as the game changer on the front end?
He wasn’t around during the first few games where we seemed to be kind of lost, but ever since he came back, he’s made our second line beastly.
Sure, everyone else put their “want” meter up a notch, but I still feel like Marty has put a lot of life into this team. His speed is ridiculous.

Philly almost pulled a San Jose, coming back from 5-1 to tie it. Then they struggled with the lead for a while. Then Winnipeg scored with a minute left to win the thing.

Two things:
1. Philly’s goalies let in 9 goals on 25 shots. TO WINNIPEG. I thought Pavelic was bad, but he made like 35 saves and let in 6 goals. Not ATROCIOUS by any stretch. I hereby am no longer allowed to criticize Niemi.
2. Edmonton might actually hand Washington its first loss tonight. That’s awesome, man. Edmonton is a nice story early this year.

Great article
As usual, very well written and extremely informative.
It’s a bit subjective to me, and I’m sure you could quantitatively prove me wrong (by game winning goals, etc…) but at this point in their careers, I think BB is as important, if not more, than Patty is to the Sharks. JMO.
Keep up the great work!
