Winging It In Motown
Abel to Yzerman

My favorite memory of Ian White as a San Jose Shark isn't anything specific-- he scored a goal in game two against the Detroit Red Wings that helped the Sharks take a 2-0 series lead, and was excellent against Los Angeles in a series where he was knocked out of game one and missed game two following a check by Jarret Stoll. There's very little that stands out in the way of particulars however-- he didn't have that mammoth game where legends are made, and by and large was a defenseman who didn't have a lot of flashy plays that demanded you pay attention.

But boy was he ever solid.

I mentioned this in our piece on Brent Burns from yesterday, but Ian White was hands down the best defenseman on the team last year when it came to carrying the puck from side to side on the blueline. He'd receive the puck from a forward along the boards, drive off his right leg, and walk the point like a tightrope artist between two large buildings. It wasn't a flashy play, nor is this paragraph lacking mild hyperbole, but it was something that really stuck out during his forty games with the organization. It was effective, meshed well with the strength San Jose's forwards have in the cycle game, and opened up a lot of scoring opportunities in situation where you thought a little chip back down low was going to occur.

White also had a really nice shot from the point-- it wasn't a bomb, but it got on goaltenders quick and always seemed to find its way on net. He averaged 2.275 shots per game in both the regular and postseason, and gave the Sharks a nice weapon to use on both the power play and on the second/third pairing.

And then there was the mustache. Now we never got to see this in San Jose, but anytime a man can grow something on his face that can make Tom Selleck* a little uncomfortable about his masculinity you have my vote of confidence. With Movember coming up and hockey doing their part to raise awareness for cancer, my only hope is that White brings back the mustache and earns an honorary place on Jonas Hiller's goaltending mask next month. He deserves it.

*Unrelated to hockey; related to awesome.

Star-divide

By all accounts White has fit in well with his new team in Detroit; as this article written on Yahoo! Sports indicates, White's good offensive smarts and ability to move the puck has made his new home in Detroit a logical place for him to play and have success in:

White, a much needed right-handed shot brought in to help compensate for the loss of Brian Rafalski, who retired, has made a smooth transition to the Wings' style of play, fitting in seamlessly as Nicklas Lidstrom's new defense partner.

"So far it seems to fit my style," White said. "They're such talented forwards that if you can find (an opening) as a D-man, they're going to find you and you're going to give each other a lot of chances."

>> Yahoo! Sports

Once the Sharks acquired Brent Burns at the NHL Trade Deadline there was no room for White on the blueline-- they had upgraded their right handed offensive defenseman position by leaps and bounds, and made the correct decision in signing two stay at home guys in Colin White and Jim Vandermeer to round out the defensive end of the ice. With all that being said, the fact that White says the Sharks didn't even call him before July 1st ("I don't know what the norm is, but there was just silence") tugged at the heart strings a bit. That's a players recollection, and it may or may not be accurate, but a part of me wishes that life was a fairy tale and the organization gave him a courtesy call before bidding adieu.

At any rate, San Jose locks horns with the ever powerful Red Wings tonight at Joe Louis Arena. Always an excellent game between the two teams, and with that game seven series still fresh in all of our minds, it should be yet another opportunity to watch some of the best this sport has to offer.

I've said this before, but there truly is something poetic about the way the red jerseys of the Wings dances with the teal of the Sharks over a glistening piece of fresh ice. Coupled with the skill set on both sides of the ledger, these games are always ones that are truly a pleasure to watch.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Havlat, Couture, and Boyle. McGinn continues to tease us with his Rick Nash power move to the net impersonations, but rings another one off the post tonight before knotting a hatty tomorrow against the Islanders.

The red and teal is my favorite NHL color match-up, but with the Red Wings in their home whites. Go, Sharks!

Same.

I just wish the Sharks with spot their normal teal instead of black during playoff time! I mean, once in a while is fine and pretty cool, but the standard of the Sharks has always been teal. It especially looks great against the red-white of the Wings.

I agree, but the league forced teams to pick one home jersey so the Sharks had to choose between either teal or black and they chose black (maybe they think they play better in it or something).

Just because the players prefer it, doesn’t mean we have to like it.

WHile I’d rather have the team play in what they’re comfortable, I would prefer it if they WANTED to play in teal.

First of all, I prefer the teal. Black is kind of cliche and nondescript. Everyone has a black jersey it seems. We’re the only Team Teal.

Second of all, I wish the players identified with that color more so, because that’s the color of San Jose. That’s OUR COLOR. I’d like it if they identified with it more like I do.

Finally (this is totally OT and sure to piss people off), I have decided that I will accept the A’s moving to San Jose, IF, IF, if they change their colors to teal, black, white, and a little orange (I also like the orange highlight).

I was an Ian White fan before he came to San Jose and i’m still an Ian White fan now that he’s come and gone. I think he’s super underrated, and i think he’s going to have somewhat of a breakout year this season with the Wings. Hopefully his breakout year doesn’t start tonight though.

Can’t wait for tonight, it should be a good test for our us.

What got me...

Is when DP tweeted a quote from Ian White pretty much stating he really was hoping to stay in SJ. But he did add that he was happy in Detroit. As much as I loathe Detroit with a passion, I’m glad Ian has found a home.

Sharks win their 4th straight in the Joe tonight… score 4-1. Goals by Thornton, Marleau, Boyle, and Clowe. Pavelski with a couple helpers to keep his point streak alive.

Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...

This article hurts

I really wish we still had White… I just imagine a power play with Boyle-Burns and White-Demers…

Hell, White’s much better than Demers is and would have been great on that bottom pairing with the other White, or Vandy…

I agree to a point.

Ian White would have been awesome as a 3rd pairing D-man, for the Sharks. Ian is: too good to be 3rd pair, but not a superstar. He skitters the gray area on most teams and just needed to get fortunate enough into a good organization to hopefully grow him into at least a regular 1st/2nd pairing.

With Burns here, like all other opinions expressed, he would have been a big fish in a small pond; not a god fit anymore. A guy like Ian deserves the ice time and the mentor-ship from a proper veteran and other elite players. He showed what he could do for an elite team on the Sharks and has another great opportunity with the Wings to do it again. For his sake, I hope it sticks.

Good luck to him, but not at the expense of the Sharks.

by Lytning on Oct 28, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I really liked White as a player and as a person. . .and regret that he deserved, at least, some sort of communication from the Sharks.

Having said that, his play against Canucks in the playoffs left a lot to be desired. . .and I’m guessing that that’s what prompted DW to trade for Burns.

Though I wish him well. . .but no regrets with the new Dmens we have now. In a tough series in the playoff, the new additions will take us further than what White did for us last year.

Yeah, most of the team didn’t look very good in that series. I don’t remember White looking especially bad in that series, and he was crazy good during the Kings series.

by Khaaz on Oct 28, 2011 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally agree

I was actually advocating trading one of Demers or Braun and then resigning White. It may have hurt our future a bit making a move like that but it would’ve greatly boosted our chances at the cup imo, and really that’s what it’s all about.

We probably could’ve gotten a good asset in return for Demers (plus a pick) and White is certainly an upgrade over Demers, at least for now.

by Khaaz on Oct 28, 2011 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Even after trading for Burns we had enough cap space to re-sign White if we wanted.

Especially if you add the one million that we decided to give to Vandermeer instead.

Both Demers & Braun

Had better numbers than White last season (regular season). They both saw higher QualComp and had better CORSI numbers. I can see why the Sharks decided to keep their younger, cheaper home grown talent.

White may be a better all-around D man right now, but Demers (and Braun, maybe) will be at least as good as White for a lot longer.

Yeah, well, welcome to the internet, where we don’t have to cite sources to have an opinion.

Demers and Braun are objectively younger than White, though, yes?

@shampeon

by ievans on Oct 28, 2011 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

And since you’ve challenged me here….

Demers is 3 years younger than White, 2-3 inches taller, and roughly the same weight. His point totals in his first two years in the NHL (21 and 24 points) are similar to White’s first two full seasons (21 and 26).

White’s career high of 38 points came in 2009-10 and was split between the Leafs and Flames. Last year he had 26 points spread between the Flames, Canes, and Sharks.

I’d say Demers has a physical edge that White lacks. White has a better shot and higher goal totals. Given that White is playing with Lidstrom on the Wings this year, I expect he’ll probably meet or exceed his career high.

So as of right now, Demers is a comparable defenseman to White despite playing fewer minutes, and he’s younger, a bit bigger, cheaper.

Huh

I didn’t know that about us not contacting him.

I thought they said last year that they had discussed things and it was White’s decision to pursue free agency? I remember a big deal was made about how it was his first shot at free agency and after being bounced around so much he wanted a chance to decide where he goes for once.

Hearing this business kinda bums me out…

All we ever heard from the Sharks was that they were pursuing other options but the doors were not closed. White always said he wanted to be back. I think the plan was a trade at the draft and to go with White if that didn’t happen. The trade happened.

Demers is some sort of wiz kid

Well, I dunno if we’ll go as far as calling him that, but if I remember correctly, an article was posted here on FTF a while ago talking about how if Demers didn’t play hockey, he would have pursued a career in Science or Math or something, hence “The Brains” nickname.

And anytime the SCIENCE-meme pops up on FTF, it typically refers to Demers.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but that’’s how I understand it.

Anyways, I second that “The Brains & Braun” is an awesome name for a D pairing.

I’m sure SJ would have loved to keep White if Burns wasn’t in play. But DW knew we couldn’t afford both and I cannot compare the two. We got the better player and White landed in Detroit to replace Rafalski, not a bad deal. I won’t shed any tears for White, as I’m guessing we’ll need to beat him/Detroit in the playoffs again this year. And since Boyle is expensive and still locked up for a couple more years, you can’t have everything…Sorry!
