Sharks win fourth in a row with 4-2 win over the Red Wings

Photo

Over the last three seasons San Jose and Detroit have played each other to a stalemate in terms of shots on net, scoring chances, and possession time. Each and every game has been like a symphony written by a seesaw, with momentum swinging back and forth as the two teams trade scoring chances up and down the ice. But whether by design, sheer luck, or a little something people like to call "finding a way to win", the Sharks have managed to come out on top more often than not.

They did it again tonight.

Ryane Clowe, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton all scored for the Sharks tonight in Joe Louis Arena as the Sharks fought through an excellent game by Jimmy Howard and a first period goal from Henrik Zetterberg to get the win. Martin Havlat, who had a pair of assists tonight and continued to make Sharks GM Doug Wilson look like a genius for acquiring him this offseason, became the only player in Sharks history besides Joe Thornton to begin his career in San Jose with an assist streak of four games.

After pummeling Jimmy Howard on the first power play of the game, San Jose got pushed onto their heels a bit by the Wings. Henrik Zetterberg popped one into the net after a shot by Nicklas Lidstrom careened off the lively Joe Louis Arena backboards to his stick, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead, and a second marker from Tomas Holmstrom was short-lived as it was waived off following a marginal goalie interference call.

The Sharks would respond with two goals in the second period, as Havlat made a beautiful entry into the zone, kicked the puck out wide, and pounced on the loose puck to send a delicate pass to Ryane Clowe who roofed it past the outstretched blocker of Howard. Five minutes later Patrick Marleau would flash the speed that has propelled him into the game's elite, blowing past ex-Sharks defenseman Ian White and showcasing a nice set of hands to chip the puck off the ice into the top of the net to give San Jose the lead.

It wouldn't last long however, as the Wings would take advantage on the power play. After receiving a pass from Nicklas Lidstrom at the top of the circles, Pavel Datsyuk drove up the middle of the ice and sent an innocent looking wrist shot towards the Sharks net. Nothing is quite so innocent when you have a behind that gets more publicity than Shakira's, as Tomas Holmstrom proved once again why he's the most dangerous net-front presence in the entire League. Holmstrom got a piece of the shot and sent it past Niemi to knot it at two.

But San Jose would answer, and answer quickly. After the puck found its way into the neutral zone, Joe Pavelski would send a tape to tape pass to the stick of Joe Thornton breaking into the zone. It was almost too similar to the play against Boston last Saturday, but with the roles reversed and a breakaway in hand, Thornton made it count by wristing a puck through Howard's five hole to give the Sharks a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

San Jose clamped down defensively in the third period, stifling the Wings offense for a large part of the frame while still continuing to generate chances in the offensive zone. It was nearly a perfect road game defensively, as San Jose took care of the second chance opportunities and let Niemi do the rest.

Star-divide

It doesn't take a recap to illuminate how excellent Havlat was tonight, but his stat line should be able to tell the tale perfectly-- six shots on net, two assists (one on Thornton's empty netter), some excellent defensive plays in his own end, and countless other shifty little plays in the neutral and offensive zone that created something out of nothing were par for the course for him tonight. The Sharks top six was effective all night but none was better than San Jose's second line with Havlat leading the charge-- the chemistry he's been developing with Couture and Clowe seems to be growing with each game.

San Jose's bottom two lines were essentially a non-factor tonight, as Brad Winchester picked up his fourth penalty of the season on a tripping call and McLellan shortened up his bench in the third period. This is a common occurrence against the Wings, where both teams will start rolling three lines instead of four at around the midway point, but you have to wonder why Winchester (who has had a disappointing start to the year) saw ice time in the third period over the likes of Jamie McGinn and Benn Ferriero.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Brent Burns turned in another solid performance on the backend, a standard feature on this road trip as well, and chipped in with six blocked shots combined. Boyle-Murray logged plenty of ice time and continued to see the tough situations defensively, a product of the trust McLellan has placed in them early this year. Braun-White was quietly effective as well, as both turned in one of their better defensive performances of the season despite not playing alongside one another in a game situation. It will be interesting to see how long Demers sits on the sideline, but with the six game road trip coming to a close, that time could be finished soon-- the Sharks currently have eight defenseman on the roster. It's hard to mess with anything when you have a good thing going, but a poor four game sample from Demers shouldn't be enough to keep him in the press box all year.

The Sharks head into New York to face John Tavares and the New York Islanders tomorrow night. The way they locked down the lead in the third period tonight was an excellent thing to see, as well as the standout play of their high profile wingers. San Jose didn't play poorly to start the year, but made some big mistakes that ended up in their net-- by and large those mistakes have been cleaned up on this road trip, which has generated the results we are seeing now.

Tonight was yet another win against the Detroit Red Wings, a team that has held sway over San Jose for the majority of the franchise's history. But most importantly it came in Joe Louis Arena, a place that has begun to feel less and less like a death trap and more and more like a chance to make a statement.

4-0-0 on a roadtrip after losing three games in a row?

That'll do Sharks.

That'll do.

Awesome Effort tonight

I liked the loose puck battles, Havlat is really impressing me the guy makes play’s and has a pretty wicked wrister. Only area I thought the team could of been better on was faceoffs. That hooking call on Havlat should of went the other way with holding the stick!

A few quick points:

Great game from Niemi, the top-6, and the defense!

However, the bottom-6 remains a concern for me…it appeared that Handzus got less ice time because his linemates weren’t all that good…not sure. I think our bottom-6 is still a big work in progress.

Changes I expect for tomorrow:
1) I expect that Vandermeer will play instead of White due to a back-to-back and probably Demers
2) Mitchell will be back on the 3rd line instead of Ferriero and adjust the 4th line accordingly
3) Hopefully, Greiss is in net

Keep up the good work San Jose – Go Sharks!

Yea I was saying the same thing earlier, though not in the mindfuck category but more in the “Wow the West is going to be even more of a grindhouse than last year” with Edmonton coming out so well and Vancouver sucking balls. I’m actually happy for Edmonton, they are kinda pulling off what Chicago did after sucking so bad they got Kane and Toews, then some dev time and they were great. Edmonton has their 2 young stars and picked up Smyth to bolster their top line and a hot goalie. Doubt very much they’ll be bottom in the league this season and if nothing else that means less free points for Vancouver then all the better.

It could just be another season start burst that dies off, kinda like last year when the Maple Leaves opened the season top in the league til they burned out (Speaking of Toronto, go Kessel! Smashing all them scumbags that put him down), but I hope it continues for more excellent games in the season.

Holmstrom’s first (non) goal definitely should have counted. That was pretty much all Niemi initiating the contact.

Also, after watching the Rangers have two goals waved off on Thursday night against Toronto because of non-penalty interferences by Ryan Callahan, I’m pretty convinced that if you give the refs any chance to wave off a goal for some incidental contact (or worse) this year, that’s exactly what they’re going to do.

by Timorous Me on Oct 28, 2011 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

While it is true that it should have counted, I think what happened was that after the initial penalty was called the linesman came up and told him “You totally didn’t call the same thing the other way, and it kinda looked like a dive” and so he was looking for an excuse and that gave him one; all sprawled half the body over the end of the pads that from that angle it looked like just the excuse.

Either way, the refs called multiple things against SJ that shouldn’t have been penalties in the first place, so I’m ok with the “injustice” of an extremely soft goal waive off.

At first

I thought calls seemed to be going just Detroit’s way but they evened out in the end. It looked like the refs were just trying to let them play here and there. The waived goal definitely counted but it serves them right for their cheap ass “lively” boards.
I still don’t miss I. White, I hope Greiss gets to play tomorow and I’m looking forward to seeing what Tmac does with his Braun/Demers situation.
And what about Mitchell??? Too soon to tell but it is his last contract year and it looks like McGinn (who’s cheaper and an RFA next year) could easily take his 3rd line spot if Mitch was to get traded.

by raphelo on Oct 28, 2011 9:28 PM PDT reply actions

The Braun/Demers situation intrigues me as well. As Plank mentioned in the article, a 4-game sample size from Demers is not nearly enough to determine if he’s regressed/stayed stagnant or whatever. I hope we see him tomorrow. Maybe a few games in the press box did him some good.

If anyone is thinking trade bait, I tend to err more on the side that neither of them are (will be) on the trading block. Having 8 NHL-ready defenseman is not a bad thing, especially in the playoffs. But who knows.

by JQ24 on Oct 28, 2011 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

They both

deserve to play. I think there’s enough games to not have worry about either player getting enough games. I just want to see Braun playoff ready by the end of the year so that no one has to question “what if Demers gets injured?” again. Even if we do have Van and C. White. Or maybe Demers’ll be backing up Braun up by the end of the year? Either way the Defense is headed in the right direction. And I still hope Tmac tries a Brains and Braun experiment.

If the question “what if Demers (or any other defenseman) gets injured?” again happens, at least we won’t have to answer with Kent Huskins anymore.

The fact that they’re practicing together right now is a good thing, for sure. I wasn’t surprised that they weren’t paired together tonight, but I could see this being some long-term thinking on the part of McLellan. I’ve said it before: unless someone’s traded or injured, within 12 months those two both need to be in the lineup, and the most logical way is to be paired together.

Mitchell

Again, he will not be traded unless it’s for a clear upgrade at his position. As much as everyone loves McGinn, he doesn’t bring the same skill set that Mitchell does.

Mitchell was playing fantstic hockey before he got hurt and I’d be willing to bet that he’ll continue to play same way when he gets back into the linup tonight.

Can we get over the lively boards issue?

When it’s constantly referred to, it sounds like such a cop-out. I’m pretty sure everyone in the league (or at least the Western Conference) has played enough games and seen enough tape to know that the boards can be a factor in Joe Louis Arena. Did Niemi expect to be scored on off that specific shot by Lidstrom? No. But was he surprised that Detroit used a carom to set up a scoring chance? I doubt it.

It’s not cheap – they’d be stupid NOT to use them to their advantage. By all accounts and purposes, the HP Pavilion has gotten livelier boards this season as well. Hopefully the Sharks can learn to do the same.

Rated M for McGinn.

There’s a difference between knowing that the boards are bouncy and knowing exactly how the puck is going to react whenever it hits any part of the boards. The home team has a significant advantage here.

It's not a cop-out to talk about it.

I should clarify, I think it’s a cop-out to whine about it.

It IS a significant advantage, but one that’s based off of education and utilization of their surroundings. Same as a team playing in Florida, Nashville, or San Jose probably knows how to play better on less-than-ideal ice conditions when compared to teams from Edmonton or Winnipeg.

But to call the use of lively boards for passes “cheating?” It’s not quite the same as recording opposing team’s practice sessions, stealing signs, or using PEDs. To me, it’s complaining about geometry. And though opposing teams may not be as accustomed to using it to their advantage, it’s not like they’re precluded from using it either.

Rated M for McGinn.

by DownRUpLYB on Oct 29, 2011 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but it’s not just that the Detroit boards are “lively”. The Detroit boards consistently react in ways no other team’s boards seem to do. I don’t blame Detroit for taking advantage of their weird boards, but it does seem like the league should look at them to see why they act so differently than most other boards.

If the Holmstrom goal didn’t get waived off, Detroit would’ve had TWO goals that they would not have scored if their boards didn’t react the way they do, and that’s pretty lame.

What if that was a WCF elimination game? How pissed would you be if the Sharks lost and got eliminated because of 2 BS goals that wouldn’t have been scored in any other arena despite the Sharks outplaying the Wings? It’d be like how we lost in Vancouver when the puck bounced off of the stanchion, except that was a complete fluke, while the Detroit boards consistently create flukey goals like that that only the Wings knows how to take advantage of.

It’s one thing to have the home advantage, but the Detroit boards give the Wings an advantage that no other team gets when they’re at home, which really isn’t fair.

It’d be like how we lost in Vancouver when the puck bounced off of the stanchion, except that was a complete fluke, while the Detroit boards consistently create flukey goals like that that only the Wings knows how to take advantage of.

I think this is where the fundamental difference of opinion lies. I don’t consider it flukey exactly because the Wings intentionally shoot wide to create those opportunities. The Vancouver goal was a complete fluke, as that puck/stanchion deflection practically defied physics, and no one but Kevin Bieksa knew where it was. Compare that to Lidstrom’s shot-pass yesterday, he knew exactly what he was doing, so that’s not really a fluke, just unconventional.

(And no one’s really mentioned this yet, but why was Zetterberg left all alone anyway? Yeah, he slipped out of a direct passing lane, but Murray took his eyes off him and allowed him to get an uncontested shot.)

Here’s my last thoughts on the issue: I don’t think Detroit’s players are being cheap if they use this to their advantage. BUT IF Detroit’s management/hockey department INTENTIONALLY doctored their boards to engineer the bounces, THEN that definitely crosses the line into cheating. Maybe the NHL should investigate to see if they were tampered with. But until then, I won’t call it a BS way to score. And the Tank has livelier boards now too – so the Sharks should learn how to add that to their repertoire as well.

Rated M for McGinn.

by DownRUpLYB on Oct 30, 2011 5:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah it’s not flukey, that’s the problem. They’re LIKE flukey goals that sometimes happen, but something about Detroit’s boards makes it so they can consistently score goals like that, and that isn’t right imo.

And yeah like i said, the problem isn’t with the Red Wings players; the problem is with whoever put up those boards or whoever made the boards the way they are, and maybe with the league for not inspecting them.

I was very apprehensive about the Heatley/Havlat swap when it happened, but maaan, these first 4 games from Marty have made me a huge fan and reminded me that DW is a genius.

He kind of reminds me Kyle Wellwood but way better obviously. Not in terms of skating ability, but there were some times tonight I wish he would have just shot the dang puck. Though I won’t complain if he continues to make saucy passes like the one to Clowe today.

But watching him play closely? You see the little (but very important) things. I think Heatley got better at backchecking as time went on and when the team finally emphasized defense more. I remember instances last year where I was impressed with his ability to do so.

But you’re right. In only 4 games, Havlat’s defensive game is way more obvious, and for that matter, way more effective than Heatley’s ever was.

by JQ24 on Oct 28, 2011 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Backchecking is easy when you have the speed to do it, which Heatley didn’t have and thus made him a defensive pylon that you could sidestep, hence why all the top defensemen are all dynamic skaters. Douglas Murray would be top line quality on his own if his skating could back up his skillset.

Nolan Ryan's face was priceless.

They say that Ron Washington’s loyalty to his guys and to his word is a real key to his managerial success, but it seems to me that many of his decisions based on sort of blind loyalty turned around to backfire in this series.

The way Bochy showed some kind of magic touch last year down the stretch, making every single right move with his bullpen and lineups, basically, we saw how a manager can really help his team win a World Series. The way Washington didn’t alter hls lineups and mismanaged his bullpen and rotation at times in this series, we saw the complete opposite. It would be a shame, but you have to wonder if this is sort of going to define his legacy as the Rangers’ manager in the long run.

Yeah, seemed like Washington relied on his relievers’ abilities to pitch themselves out of a hole a tad too much and St. Louis capitalized **cough**Alexi Ogando**cough**.

And letting your PITCHER bat with two outs, bases loaded???

Not exactly the same, but kinda reminds me of Hue Jackson’s faith before the turnover-on-downs in the Raiders’ last two games. Okay, I can understand the call in the KC game, because that was on the goal line, but when a FG would have iced the game against Cleveland…

I don’t get why “everyone” knows about the lively boards in Detroit and how they drastically change how rebounds are managed (1st goal and the disallowed goal were purposeful shots off the back boards for giant rebounds), that the NHL doesn’t come up and investigate the issue and/or order the franchise to replace them. May cost money to replace the whole set, but those kind of rebounds just don’t happen at other buildings so it is a form of cheating…

Let's hope not

The Sharks just installed more “lively” boards at the tank.

Eh....both teams play on the same ice with the same boards

Other teams are free to use the boards like that too when they visit Detroit.

by BillytheSid on Oct 29, 2011 7:49 AM PDT up reply actions

They still have to have a good team to use them

Sharks had different rink dimensions at the Cow Palace and they couldn’t capitalize on it at all. That’s a much bigger change to the game than lively boards.

I posted on this above

but I really don’t think this is cheating. Even though NHL rinks have identical dimensions, there’s variables in each arena that can’t (maybe even shouldn’t) be helped. The boards, glass-types, and the ice quality are the big ones that come to mind. Players use the boards to make passes in every single game, but it seems like people are singling out Detroit because their strategy happens to be unconventional and a little tricky.

But if the NHL is to crackdown on the lively boards, then it should also replace every single one in the league to ensure their uniformity – in other words, get all NASCAR-like. Otherwise, Detroit and its fans will go all tinfoil hat brigade against the world.

Complete domination...

Over the Wings no less. This team is big, fast, strong and immensely talented. Over and over again i notice just how BIG this team is. We finally, after 20 years, but truly 6 years or so of tinkering (by DW) have the right club. The only thing that can hold us back is injuries. I loved hearing the Red Wings announcers (who are very respectful of our beloved Sharkies) make complimentary comments of our team. I got the feeling that they knew what any good hockey fan knows, this team is much better than the Wings, meaning they are clearly, and I mean clearly for the first time the best team in the league. Now I know there will be conservatives that say hold back. And I understand that sentiment. But I’ve been watching this team since 1994, and I am COMPLETELY stoked with this club.

yup

it kind of made me giddy listening to the red wings announcers on their postgame show flat out praising the sharks…

“Listen, this San Jose team… when you change half your team, I mean Doug Wilson better have some big shoulders. He made some moves. They got REALLY big, and they’re still quick. This team is something to be reckoned with, I’m telling you right now. They’re trying to get past the final four. The Red Wings now at this point in time I’d say, have to look at San Jose and say anybody who favors Detroit over San Jose… I don’t think so. The Sharks have got the edge psychologically I think at this point and Detroit’s going to have to climb back and try to get that back. But, you’re talking about a team that looks very much like a Red Wing team a few years ago when they used to beat people on a regular basis and right now San Jose is doing that for Detroit.”

WOW right?

Great Game

These two teams are just so fun to watch. I still can’t believe how underrated Pavel Datsyuk is. When people talk about the best players in the league, he’s rarely mentioned but man is he a special player.

Tonight’s game should be a good one too. The Islanders have some talented, speedy forwards that are going to give a tired Sharks team some trouble. They’re another young team that’s fun to watch.

Good!

It’s a good game for him to play seeing as they play 3 games in 4 nights.

Also ‘sounds’ like Demers & Mitchell will be back in the line up tonight as well, maybe Vandermeer too.

Go break in that sick mask with a win. Too bad Nabby can’t play though.
