According to David Pollak of Working The Corners and Kevin Kurz of CSN's Sharks Talk, Thomas Greiss will be in net tonight for San Jose. Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan also hinted at some other changes that may occur as well, as he cited "fresh legs" as being a reason to mix up his lineup:

Thomas Greiss gets the start tonight for the Sharks, and Todd McLellan said he has some other lineup changes in mind without disclosing who plays and who sits other than saying some "fresh legs" would be out there.

But looking at the stat sheet last night, it’s pretty clear he wasn’t happy with Benn Ferriero’s or Jamie McGinn’s performance on the third lines as both played less than six minutes — only a little less than Andrew Desjardins. But fourth line forwards Andrew Murray (12:25) and Brad Winchester (10:20) just about doubled that.

Torrey Mitchell is an obvious candidate to return tonight after missing the past four games, other than those first 59 seconds against New Jersey. The only other fresh legs would appear to belong to Frazer McLaren, who started the season as a non-roster player, but has been practicing with the team on this road trip.

>> Working The Corners

We haven't been impressed with Brad Winchester's game thus far this season, but considering he was a player who saw minutes in the third period last night while McGinn, Desjardins, and Ferriero sat, it doesn't look like he will be the odd man out when McLellan submits his final lineup. Unless "fresh legs" literally means "fresh legs", in which case McGinn and Ferriero will definitely be in the lineup*.

*That's a playing time joke.

Mitchell's likely return will likely put him on the third line, where he had a lot of success this season before being injured in San Jose's 4-3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils. He's shown a lot of speed thus far this season, and has given opposing teams trouble playing alongside center Michal Handzus.

In former Sharks news, Evgeni Nabokov will not be in net tonight as he is dealing with a day to day injury. David Pollak had an excellent sit-down interview with him earlier today that can be found here.

Use this thread to discuss the game tonight.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Pavelski and McGinn (x3)-- I predicted a Ginner hat-trick yesterday, so I'm sticking with it even if he ends up in the press box (where his exposure to Cortexiphan as a youngster allows him to alter the trajectory of pucks from afar). Fear The Fin writes the best recap ever following the game.

I think you’re thinking of minor penalties to goaltenders:

27.1 Minor Penalty to Goalkeeper – A goalkeeper shall not be sent to the penalty bench for an offense which incurs a minor penalty, but instead, the minor penalty shall be served by another member of his team who was on the ice when the offense was committed. This player is to be designated by the Manager or Coach of the offending team through the playing Captain and such substitute shall not be changed.

Not sure if I like this quote.
“I think before people thought maybe we were a highly explosive offensive team," Thornton said. "I think we’ve kind of changed. We’ve kind of evolved a little bit, just kind of more defensively, more 1-0 games, more 2-1 games, things like that, not blowing teams out 5-1 or 6-1. We’re just kind of … We feel like we should win every night 2-1 or 1-0."

Poorly worded, but correct.

Because when they won 5-1 or 6-1, they also tended to lose 2-0 or 3-1. It was easy to frustrate them (HELLO JONAS HILLER!) and cause mistakes.

Now they’re grittier and play closer games. But in a way it’s like they’re treating regular games like playoff games.

The only thing bothering me about Greiss

is that he keeps pooping out this little rebound (yes pooping) that is about a foot or so in front of him and even though there isn’t anyone really around he just sits there and looks at the puck while he waits for someone to come over and grab it, rather than sweeping it away or something.

Actually, they're made in the USA.

So. They’re American burritos. Bean and cheese. Bought like 8 bags because they were on sale… $3 for a bag of 8. They’re so freaking good. And keep in mind, food prices are typically like 33% higher in Canada than in Michigan and New York.

I never said all immigrants should leave and are stupid.

I used a phrase in reference to someone being RIDICULOUSLY foreign.

I only dislike immigration regarding population growth, and the sheer ignorance Canadian immigration policies have of protecting Canadian culture. I’d hope that immigrants effectively become Canadian, because if they’re going to be permanently living here, they’re no longer Indian or Polish or Malaysian or whatever. They’re Canadian. I don’t see the ignorance in that. Immigration is a privilege, not a right. Abide by the standards of the society you so desperately want to be a part of.

In seriousness though, if I were to say “I hate immigrants” (though I probably wouldn’t), it’d be referring to the ones that AREN’T paying taxes… Canada has a problem with people coming over illegitimately and promptly collecting welfare. No, I'd be part of the problem I had a ton of kids.

I won’t have more than two. More likely one, to promote population decline. I want to do everything I can to promote birth control and abortion across the country and around the world. Wrong as it sounds to say, there are way too many people, and we need to start dying off. I don’t mean, “kill a bunch of people”, I mean more like… Create population decline through education. We have like 50 years of oil left. 35 years left of coal. And consumption rates keep rising.

And yet nobody campaigns for population decline. It’s confounding.

Is through two things: increased affluence and the education of women.

In theory, and largely in practice, immigration promotes both.

Something I remember from anthropology...

We studied a certain tribe from somewhere in the South Pacific. Essentially, war was an everyday thing, but this served a purpose. The island was so small that it could only sustain a few hundred people. As such, war was necessary to balance the population. The system was a lot more complicated than I’m describing it, but it’s always stuck with me. People killing people is almost a necessity, if we assume the world works like that island.

The basics

Large families are prevalent in societies where a certain number of children are needed to work the farm/get water/hunt/etc. For the family to be able to survive, they need bodies doing the work.

Take sub-saharan Africa for example. Women frequently have to travel 2-4 hours each way to the nearest source of fresh water to get enough water daily for a family to survive. This is time during which they can not pursue an education.

It’s been proven that, in general, women with more education choose to have fewer kids. It’s no coincidence that population rates grow the fastest in societies where women are denied education in addition to other basic human rights.

Ahh.

This explains why Africa has the highest rate of population growth despite that whole AIDS thing.

In theory then, isn’t education more important than aid? I mean, if if we were to take emotions out of it, wouldn’t it be acceptable for the uneducated to die off while the educated prosper? Wait, that sounds kinda horrible… Can people be educated en masse?

Actually

The Middle East is growing at the fastest rate in the world. AIDS has had a devastating generational effect on Africa.

I know exactly what you’re saying about education vs. aid, and there are plenty of voices out there clammoring against aid for exactly the reason you stated, why encourage people to breed.

Without emotion, that’s an analytically fine position. But as soon as you reintroduce even a modicum of conscience, you see that it’s just indefensible. The distribution of wealth in the world is so skewed, there’s no excuse for cutting aid.

Immigration is a positive trend in terms of increasing education. Other than that, you need to just put more infrastructure in place. Education begets education.

Take steps to prevent overpopulation, or accept whatever bad cards are dealt to us as a result? I mean… More people means less forests. Is that those in a privileged position make the decisions for those who are not.

To presume we can make “humane” decisions about the life of any other human being is dicey enough. To say we can do it for tens of millions? That’s just pure lunacy. Humanity is in this thing together, whether they like it or not.

That scene in Planet of the Apes where Charlton Heston is on trial, but unable to defend himself or his species. But it’s interesting, because that movie argues both for compassion, and that humans are fucking stupid, prone to blowing up everything they’ve built.

It was all against our best players.

It’s one thing if the third or fourth line gets trapped or something.

But for our best players to just be outworked by an inferior team…

Especially since it was a road back to back flying from Detroit to New York. /vomit

Without that first opening minutes of huge energy, the Sharks just played like a tired team which they were, so I’m stoked that they pulled it off.

I definitely gotta say though, Griess needs to adjust his style on the PK. His aggressive style may work just fine when there are equal numbers of defenders covering the breaking out pass recipients, but on the PK he’s leaving the goal wide wide wide open with zero chance to make the cross ice shuffle for the very very common activated point cross crease feed. If he was playing literally only 6 inches farther back than he was, both PP goals would have been stopped.

by VVhirlwind on Oct 29, 2011 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

Good observations on Greiss

I find it interesting because I think Niemi has struggled when he’s been far out of the net as well. I wonder if it’s coaching that’s pushing both men to play further out in the crease.

To an extent, that suits Greiss, who’s a Warren Strelow pupil. But Niemi is a big shotblocker, and he SHOULD play deeper in the net, as it plays to his strengths.

For Niemi i’ve noticed it seems to be a situational thing. He pushes out when he thinks no one is or can push up on him, in which case pushing out cuts down the opening angles, and any goals he’s let in because of that have been because he hasn’t looked and trusted the defenders a little more than he should have in those particular situations.

Well there was that blown icing call I suppose.

Approximately eight warnings, a couple dozen censorships, and one ban in the last month and counting.

What happened with the blown call? I along with everyone else was watching the crappy stream

by slotownsharksfan on Oct 29, 2011 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

The botched call was delay of game for puck being shot over the glass, but on video replay it was clear it hit the top inch of the glass which then should have been a non call. It was understandable why they did though the redirect wasn’t drastic and black puck on very dark background.

Afterward when the thing was shown on the jumbotron and the coaches were screaming at them to look at it they probably realized yea they fucked up, but they can’t take back calls once they’ve made them.

That there though is the perfect example for why they need a rule for a coaches’ single “call review” thing, like the single timeout, implemented. Wouldn’t take long and because there would only be 1 per team at max, it wouldn’t eat up much time.

by VVhirlwind on Oct 29, 2011 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks a lot for the explanation.

Ya a single coaches review challenge would be useful for those kind of calls. Where the refs may not see something but a player or the coaches might. Like on an important icing call or even on some types of penalties like high sticking.

by slotownsharksfan on Oct 29, 2011 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Coach's review worries me a little.

If it’s limited to asking the refs to look at a video replay and then make the call, that seems fair, but if it allows for coaches or players to argue a point I feel like it quickly becomes clunky, and also easy to manipulate—you could have coaches deliberately arguing calls for extended periods of time to give their guys a free rest, or players doing a sort of verbal “reverse diving” by arguing against clear calls. Also, players whom the refs tend to like more personally get an unfair advantage at that point, etc. etc. So, I’m for it as long as it’s careful; God knows the NHL officiating needs to be looked at in some way…

All that said, I agree that this may have been the hockey gods apologizing for that stanchion nonsense last season; and I have to say, the way we were starting to wake up and push I think we were going to get the 3rd goal anyway, so I don’t feel TOO dirty. But I do feel really, really bad for the Islanders fans, that sucked.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT VS! Well at least the announcer screams for goals for either side, but i’ll still miss my Drew!

one good thing about the games being one vs is that I actually get to watch on tv and not have to suffer through awful streams on my laptop. I hate that cable companies are allowed to have monopolies of certain counties. HP pavilion is 20 miles closer to me than staples center and i only get to watch kings games on tv

Question for Winnipeg.

How do you go from winning 9-8 to losing 1-0?

I’ll tack the month-ending standings chart on to that month’s Sharkstistics page.
Then later in the season, it’ll get it’s own running post.

I'm sorry

But potential points this early in the season is a useless meter. It’s sort of useful in figuring out what’s possible near the end of the season, but right now everything’s possible. To figure out standings, avg pts per game is the only way to go – which leaves the sharks in fifth.

I don't keep

them running online all season, just the end of each month so folks can see how their team is doing.
But some find them interesting, despite the fact that many others seem to find early season games/streaks as unimportant to the season as an whole.
