With Sharks Preseason Complete, Roster Decisions To Be Made

Coming into camp Jamie McGinn was a favorite to play on the third line for San Jose; now, he might be starting his season on the bench.

[Update 3:30 PM]: The Sharks have signed Brad Winchester to a one-year, $725,000 contract.

[Update 10:40 AM]: Justin Braun, Benn Ferriero, and John McCarthy have been sent to Worcester.

[Update 11:38 AM]: Cam MacIntyre, Mike Moore, Frazer McLaren, Harri Sateri, and James Sheppard (who will be placed on LTIR) are the four remaining players left on the team who are not expected to be starters. Both Moore and MacIntyre would have to be placed on waivers in order to be assigned to Worcester.

After going 5-1 in the preseason San Jose is hitting the ground running heading into opening night. Lingering offseason injuries to Antti Niemi and Martin Havlat don't seem to be serious at this point-- the general vibe from David Pollak of Working The Corners seems to indicate that even if Havlat and Niemi miss the home opener they will be ready to play in time for the Sharks second game against Anaheim-- and the Sharks have managed to stay healthy throughout all of their six games. In short, Todd McLellan's life as a Head Coach is pretty easy right now.

This week it's about to get a little tougher.

With the preseason campaign complete, McLellan and the Sharks braintrust must decide on which players stick on the roster in San Jose and which players get sent down to Worcester. Heading into camp two and a half weeks ago the Sharks knew their would be stiff competition for roles on the third and fourth line, with any number of players being candidates for the role. But as the dust settles and roster decisions have to be made, there looks to be some clear front runners heading into the week.

The biggest story has been Tommy Wingels, who has scored three goals this preseason and shown a strong mental presence on the ice. Once considered a long shot to crack the roster, Wingels is the definite favorite for a third line spot alongside Michal Handzus and Torrey Mitchell. His knack for scoring goals in the preseason definitely helped him receive attention from the Sharks coaching staff early in the running, but his dedication to the defensive end and strong work down low is what has allowed him to stick.

Andrew Murray and Andrew Desjardins have seemed to solidify their spots on the Sharks fourth line, and will be fixtures on the penalty kill to start the season. If one can assume Wingels will start the year in San Jose (which all indications seem to point to), that leaves one spot open on the lineup card heading into the year.

According to a tweet from Bob McKenzie however, that spot may already be taken:

Nice story unfolding in SJ: looks as tho Brad Winchester, in camp on a PTO, has earned a 4th line spot, pending negotiation of a contract.

>> TSN's Bob McKenzie

Winchester made $700 K last season with St. Louis and $800 K the year prior-- considering he's on a tryout contract with the club, those negotiations shouldn't be too time consuming. If McKenzie is correct (and he always is) in saying that Winchester has earned a fourth line spot, expect news of that announcement to come early this week, possibly today.

Star-divide

This of course leaves Jamie McGinn and Benn Ferriero without a defined role on the team, putting the Sharks in a situation where two playoff starters last season could be out of a full-time role to start the year. With Havlat still a question mark for opening night, Ferriero could play on the second line where he's been practicing during the preseason and get a final chance to make himself a commodity the Sharks can't do without-- doing so is easier said than done however, as when Havlat gets back that top-six spot gets filled. The third and fourth lines have begun to formulate an identity that Ferriero's skill set doesn't necessarily work with, creating a situation where the Sharks may be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

And then there is the waiver status, which will likely play a factor in the process.

With a total of 65 games played at the NHL level during regular and postseason play, the 24 year old Ferriero has all but used up his waiver exemption status when traversing from the NHL to the AHL and back. According to CapGeek's waiver calculator, Ferriero is exempt from being put on waivers for the first five games this season. Once he hits five games played in 2011-2012, Ferriero would have to pass through waivers in order to make it to the AHL-- in other words, 29 other teams would get the opportunity to claim him.

Jamie McGinn is an even more precarious position when it comes to being exposed to the waiver wire. According to CapGeek's waiver calculator, McGinn is not exempt from waivers this season and, if sent down to Worcester, would be subject to claim from 29 other teams in the League. Considering his age (23), skill set (strong forward with scoring upside), and NHL experience, it stands to reason that another team would put in a claim for McGinn if he became available and they had their 50 man roster in order.

With both of these situations in play for the Sharks, it makes sense to do two things. The first is to keep McGinn on the club in a healthy scratch role or pursue a trade-- considering the team expected him to play on the third line this upcoming season, a trade seems unlikely at this juncture. Wingels had an excellent camp and deserves to take a stab at the third line to start the year, but whether or not he can compete at the NHL level over the course of 82 games or use more seasoning in Worcester is a question that will be decided as the season moves onwards. McGinn is a fine Plan B in that regard. Furthermore, with the amount of cap space the Sharks have this season, there is room to spare to carry an extra body-- McGinn fills the gap to start the year and gets an opportunity to crack the lineup full-time as the season progresses.

The second move here is to move Ferriero down to Worcester before he hits his waiver exemption limit. If Havlat isn't healthy for the home opener, Ferriero plays. But if Havlat's recuperation drags out into mid-October, Ferriero still gets sent down in order to get himself as many reps as possible in the minors. There will likely be a point when Ferriero is called up for good this season, either due to injury or because he'd be better served in San Jose. but that only makes sense later in the year; you get him more ice time in Worcester and avoid a waiver claim by sending him down before the five game mark this season.

The Sharks have some decisions to make this week-- look for cuts to come quickly, with some probably taking place today. We will update this story at the top of the page as news breaks.

I really wanted to see Mcginn have a big year

But Wingles blew him out of the water. Anyone thinks he could be this year’s dark horse? I mean of Pavs/Clowe/Demers caliber?

I think having Ginner as a scratch seems like a good Idea. I really wish there were a permanent role for him to fill though.

Next Logan Couture maybe?

Wingels is fun

and Peanut buttery smooth, but he’s not Logan Couture.

He could have a Demers like campaign though, and earn himself a permanent spot here with room to grow.

Before the prospect tournament

I really wasn’t happy with the fact that I couldn’t see anyone being this year’s dark horse. Since I really think we need one and have always seemed to have one.
Then after there was the “Scgarbossa but it’s never gonna happen what if” for a week. So now I’m just happy that the team at least has a candidate. I know people were saying maybe Ferriero before and still might turn out that way but, I think everyone is gonna be saying peanut butter baby for at least a while now.

I see McGinn and Winchester

splitting starts on the 4th line, depending on the matchups. If the Sharks want more of a scoring potential, McGinn is in. More physicality: Winchester.

I really like what Wingels has done so far in the preseason, but I just have a feeling he wont be able to keep it up and will regress back to normal. I’m guessing by mid-Nov, you’ll see Wingels back in Worcester, with McGinn in the 3rd line spot full time.

by BillytheSid on Oct 3, 2011 5:05 AM PDT reply actions

Wingels

His play (not goal scoring necessarily) this pre-season is his “normal”. He’s a good two way player w/ scoring pop. That’s what he’s been his entire career. He just needs to find consistency at the NHL level and I don’t think he’s too far away from that.

He may not stick for all 82 games this year, but he’s close. He should be a good 3rd line winger who can chip in 15g /35-40pts a year once he get comfortable with the size and spped of the NHL.

Eh.

There’s too much unproven talent on the bottom two lines. I really agree with sending Ferriero down to Wooster ASAP, but not because he’s not good enough for the team… I’d rather see him develop than walk. With McGinn, I didn’t know healthy scratch was an option… Love that idea. That’s ideal. If anyone in the bottom 6 falters, you can plug ’im in.

2 rookies (Wingels and Desjardins) on the team isn’t exactly a ton of unproven talent and is probably lower than the norm across the league.

If the team

signs Winchester I’ll be happy for the season. I think the team still needs one more proven center/winger for the playoffs even if Wingels steps up to be a regular. Unless Ferriero comes out of nowhere that is and the Sharks have plenty of time to figure that out. No injuries in the preseason either! No reason why the team shouldn’t kick some serious ass out the gate.

by raphelo on Oct 3, 2011 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Scoring may be an issue this year?

But I look for our much improved Defense to chip in more with scoring. Also, w/out Havlat around in the pre-season, it’s hard to say just how much he’ll contribute? I like our PP this year w/Boyle and Burns on point (or Havlat). I’m not worried about our bottom line scoring. Anything we get from them is good. It’s just too bad Ferriero isn’t a lower line guy, because it will be difficult for him to crack the top 6 (if Havlat stays healthy).

Also, and I’m no scholar (just in case you weren’t sure) but I think you meant to say: “there” instead of “their” in this sentence: Heading into camp two and a half weeks ago the Sharks knew their would be stiff competition for roles on the third and fourth line…

Thanks for the piece; it was exactly what I was thinking of. Great minds think alike. Looking forward to a very fun and entertaining year.

besides the fact that Ferriero is unproven I think it’s a great thing to have set back ups for the team. Anyone in the bottom six gets hurt you throw in McGinn, anyone in the top 6, Ferriero. I agree though, to me once a top 6 fwd gets hurt I think “oh shit” who’s gonna score outside of the top 5? And I know most teams would love to have two top scoring lines but I will never stop wanting a top 5 defense and 3 scoring lines.

by raphelo on Oct 3, 2011 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

well, if it is...

lets hope it’s of the short-term slump ( one week or less ) because someone is sick and throws the balance of the Force off a wee bit. I would think Pavs is still shooting the puck like he has a spring loaded arm and I expect him to lead the team in goals in the early goings.

Regarless of whether Havlat is healthy or not, I think Ferriero gets sent down

I think San Jose likes him on that line and for that role, but with the waiver issues I’m assuming that Ferriero goes to the AHL. The team tried Wingels on the second line and even on the second PP unit, where he looked collected and comfortable. With McGinn available, I bet that’s how they start the year,

We’ll know more today.

i think this is a pretty fair assessment of how things will shake out this year. I’m really liking Wingels right now, he’s really toughed it out and chipped it in. Although I will add that I’m a bit saddened by the fact that McGinn didn’t rock it and lock himself into a spot.

I see a ton of potential in the guy, I think he needs to take a deep breath and just play his game. in this preseason, you can see that he gets all worked up and is noticeably off his game trying in vain to make his presence known.

I’d like to see him and Wingels split time throughout the year.

There’s been quite a few players who are better than Moore who have cleared waivers, I don’t think he’d get picked up right now. The Sharks are probably waiting until tomorrow to waive him since most teams will pretty much have their rosters set.

And he’s actually making an NHL salary this year.

I thought he looked great when he was called up last season. I was praying fot the Coaching Staff to bench Wallin and Husky B*tch – for Braun and Moore…

Some non-NHL roster stuff...

Nathan Moon looks to have made the Worcester team on a tryout basis (like Cheechoo last year).

Also looks like the Sharks have sent three players from the Worcester tryouts (Gabriel Levesque, Ian O’Connor and Brock Matheson) to the Stockton Thunder for further examination. I really like Levesque as he’s got great hands and a wicked shot, but he’s friggen tiny, so we’ll see where he ultimately ends up. Cameron Brodie, who was in Penticton for the Sharks, is also on the Thunder roster at the moment.

If/when Sateri gets sent down to Worcester, I’d expect that Heemskerk or Sexsmith will likely be shifted down to Stockton, as well.

Hopefully he’ll stick in Stockton and excel.

I was hoping so, too. And I’m intending to get out to some Thunder games now, to see him, one of our goalies, and a few others play. If Levesque can light it up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in Worcester.

Damn, I'm not so sure about this healthy scratch situation...

Jamie is in for a breakout year, and I dont think how he played in the preseason warrants him to be an extra forward. This may hurt his play style. He’s still finding his game but im not sure he is just gonna be some extremely physical checker on our 4th line, the 3rd line is perfect for him. I think Wingels should play a few games up top, then we send him down to play top 6 minutes in Worcester. We should keep Ginner, he still is a valuable player to this team.

Winchester vs. Eager

Last year, they were pretty even in GP (Winchester played 8 more games), Pts, and PIM.

The 2 main differences: Hits and situational PIMs
Eager: 87 hits, 90mins of non-fighting PIMs
Winchester: 171 hits, 64 mins of non-fighting PIMs

What those stats tell me is that Winchester checks a LOT more than Eager. Also, even though they have fairly even PIM totals, a much larger portion of Winchester’s are from fighting majors, which means he puts the team shorthanded a LOT less than Eager.

by BillytheSid on Oct 3, 2011 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Penalty totals from last year

Eager: 24 minor penalties in 64 GP, (6) 5-min majors, (3) 10-min misconducts, 1 Match Penalty
Winchester: 22 in 76 GP, (10) 5-min majors, (2) 10-min misconducts

By those numbers, it’s pretty clear that Eager puts his team shorthanded more often (on average) and gets himself thrown out of games more often.

Does Sheppard's

salary get taken off the teams cap once he gets placed on LTIR or once (if) he gets sent down to Worcester?

by raphelo on Oct 4, 2011 11:48 AM PDT reply actions

when a player is placed on LTIR there salary does not come off the books, rather the team can exceed the salary cap by that player’s cap hit as long as that player is on LTIR (I believe it works retroactively as well).

If he gets sent to Worcester, he obviously doesn’t count against the cap, but he still gets paid (I’m not sure if he’s on a one-way or two-way contract, though, or what his waiver status is).

yep...

Sheppard & Niitty will both start on LTIR – that’s $2.725mil (Sheppard is on a 2 way contract and isn’t waiver exempt). If MacIntyre is hurt, that’s another $600k and I can’t get confirmation one way or the other about where Stalock’s salary goes (possibly another $625k).

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

But the roster

is pretty much set isn’t it. With McGinn and Mclaren or Macintyre being the back ups right. So if Sheppard comes back and they chose to keep him on the team wouldn’t they just swap his salary on the cap for someone who can be sent down so that he can take their place?

by raphelo on Oct 4, 2011 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorta

They’re allowed to exceed the cap by as much as adding the player of the same value would put them over the cap…

Say for instance the sharks had 1M in cap space, and put Nitty on LTIR (who makes 2M against the cap) This means that since the Sharks already have 1M in wiggle room, they would get an additional 1M in cap cushion while the player is on LTIR. If the Sharks do not use this cushion during the LTIR, it does not accumulate as additional cap space later, it just disappears.

by Evilducks on Oct 4, 2011 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait, that doesn't make sense to me

so that if a player is placed on LTIR while the team still has a lot of cap space (let’s say more than that player’s salary) then they aren’t allowed to exceed the cap at all?

What if they haven’t filled out their roster yet at the time the player goes on LTIR?

Let’s say they have 2 open roster spots, and $3M in cap space, when a player worth $2M goes on LTIR, that means they have to fill 3 roster spots with just that $3M rather than $5M?

The team has to use it’s actual cap space before being able to use the LTIR “cushion”. So in your scenario, they can use up to $2mil over the cap (that $ figure changes daily)…once that player comes off LTIR, they have to have enough cap space and roster space to absorb the player and his cap hit.

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That's what i thought

I just don’t see how that differs from what i initially said, maybe I didn’t express it clearly enough?

by PNK on Oct 4, 2011 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I think was ED was saying that – again, using your scenario – the two players who fill out the roster should use up as much of that final $3mil as possible so the club can then put the player on LTIR and utilize the LTIR cushion of $2mil.

I really don’t think the Sharks want to have to play the ‘how to get around the salary cap’ game this year.

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I would have thought that that was intuitively obvious, I mean, how could you spend the cushion before you spent to the cap, right?

For example, in the scenario I described, they are 3 million below the cap and then a player worth 2 million goes on LTIR, so they can spend the 3 million and then as long as the player is on LTIR they can spend an additional 2 million (while factoring in the cap hit daily against the yearly total).

Let’s say they sign a player for 2 million, they wouldn’t be using the “cushion” they’d simply be 2 million closer to the cap, specifically, they’d be 1 million below the cap.

Then they sign another player worth one million, putting them at the cap, but they still have the 2 million cushion (which doesn’t accrue daily as i understand it).

Of course any room they had under the cap during the course of the season accrues daily, so they could theoretically build up cap space over time (just not with the LTIR “cushion”). To illustrate this I’ll use another example. A team is 2 million below the cap at the beginning of the season. Halfway through the season they sign a player to a $4M cap hit, due to the savings of the $2M for the first half of the season they can still pay him and be at the cap for the rest of the season.

That’s how I understand it all. Does everything I said make sense and cohere with the CBA or whatever?

How come all the Canucks fans and blogs were saying last offseason that they would accrue a ton of extra cap space because Sami Salo was going to be on LTIR for the first half of the season? That was their reasoning for having the cap space to potentially sign Willie Mitchell at the time.

We’re they just mistaken?

by Khaaz on Oct 4, 2011 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I should finish typing…

They could use the LTIR cap space once Salo went on IR, but teams don’t accrue cap space using LTIR.

They also got really “lucky” with Edler going on LTIR about a day before Salo came off. They never had the ‘extra’ cap space to sign Mitchell.

Thanks PNK

I understand it a whole lot more now. The thing I’m trying to get at though is If you’re already playing 23 healthy players (you’re only allowed 23 right) and you buy a player while having one of your set 23 on the LTIR, wouldn’t you be forced to move someone down once that player comes back. And once you move that player down doesn’t that players salary give the team more cap room? Or at least some once the difference is figured out. Say Nitty comes back 2 mil, Greiss 587k moves down. Nitty’s 2 mil would be added but then Geiss’ would be subracted once he moves down right? That’s all I’m trying to get at.

Another example would be, the sharks have 2 mil (capgeek) in space right now. If Sheppard came back today he’d be the 15th fwd. So the Sharks would have to move someone down. They move Sheppard down and his salary then would get subtracted from the teams cap space. Which if that happend today would bring the Sharks cap space back up to 2.7 something mil (not talking about cushion or potentail cap space, just pure cap space).
Never knew there was so many details to the cap.

o.k thanks

I just started looking at capgeek and they had Sheppard’s and Moore’s salary against the Sharks cap which is why I was wondering. I figured Moore’s salary would go away if the Sharks keep him, once they move him down. And that the same would happen with Sheppard’s once he gets comes back and moves down. There shouldn’t be any reason why the Sharks would go over this years cap though since Sheppard and Nitty are due back before Feb right? They’ll be able to move Griess down and Sheppard if they want bringing the space back up to over 3 mil no? And then there’s the whole somehow the Sharks are gonna end up with something like 9 million in space for some reason. But I’ll wait on asking to figure that one out.

But one last cap question. Capgeek had I don’t know how many players with eligible bonuses that came out to a total of like 3.3 mil. Should we be worried about that since the team had to give up I think just 545k in bonuses this year?

by raphelo on Oct 4, 2011 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

The Sharks had an overage of $545k (or so) from last year according to capgeek, NO idea where that came from but whatever.

They only have $612k in possible bonuses this year.

The team shouldn’t run into any cap issues at all this year.

by raphelo on Oct 4, 2011 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

No, that isn't how it works.

It depends on what the roster cap total is at the moment you place a player on LTIR. Again, look back to last year when we called up a bunch of players right before we put Nitty officially on LTIR, this is the reason.

If you have 10M in cap space left and you put a 10M player on LTIR, you will get 0 cushion. So say, after that player is put on LTIR you can still only add 10M worth of players to the roster, and not a penny more.

This is why nobody is put on LTIR until the roster is finalized, and you don’t end up in that scenario.

Okay

that’s what I was wondering because that sounds stupid. Not saying you’re wrong, I trust your opinion on the matter, just seems stupid to me.

Could the team theoretically sign a player to a two-way contract that puts their NHL salary so it eats up all remaining cap space and the AHL salary at a minimum (a one year deal), bring them up for a day, put a player on LTIR, and then immediately send that newly signed player to the AHL?

Seems stupid. Just give them the cushion.

No

They actually have to be injured to be assigned to LTIR. If they aren’t they can be punished heavily by the league including fines of millions of dollars and losses of draft picks.

Oh I know

That’s not what i was trying to say. It was a bit confusing. My bad.

So you have an injured player making $3M who you are about to put on LTIR. You also have a ton of cap space, let’s say $6M, but for whatever reason, you believe you might want to spend to the cap and need all the space you can get, so you want the extra cushion just in case.

So you don’t have enough contracts in the AHL to bring up to fill up the cap space, so you sign someone to a two-way contract worth $6M in NHL salary, but only like $50K in AHL salary (not sure what the minimum is). You bring them up for one day to put you exactly at the cap, put the injured player on LTIR, and then immediately send that player back down to the AHL. You now have your $6M in cap space, plus the $3M cushion of the injured player on LTIR. now you can pick up Ovechkin at the trade deadline if you want!

From following Capgeek how was

Buffalo able to drop over 3 million in salary so suddenly to be under the cap before the season started? Did they just switch more expensive salary players for cheaper ones. Or did capgeek have training camp players up and now with all the cuts they’e fine? 3 mil over regardless just seems like a lot to me.

When I saw how much they make I thought “oh shit, they’re they must be really good players that Buf can call up whenever”. But now I don’t care. How the hell do players with those kind of numbers get paid that kind of money.

You're missing the mega #

I once missed the mega lotto by picking either the number before or after every number picked at the big end of the year one they always have last year. It was at like 350 mil and 3 people won it, son of a bitch!

It's easier for us

or maybe not. 5 numbers between 1 and 55 (I think) if you just play the lotto. Then there’s the California Mega lotto where it’s 5 #’s and a mega number that you have to get from another 1-55 selection.

Knowing Sharks management

They will push the team as close to the cap as they can get it, before putting Nitty, Sheppard and anybody else who will be injured for a while on LTIR. This will give them a bigger cap cushion should they need to bring in players. Once they’re officially on the LTIR they will send extra players off to Worcester.

This happened last year when Nitty went on LTIR, we brought up Petrecki, etc, to push us right to the edge, then sent them back.

It’s really not a good idea to do it this early in the year considering Niitty will be coming off as well as Sheppard. It’s a very risky game to play since they can’t bank LTIR cap space.

They’ll have a pretty hard time getting close enough to the cap to make it work this season since even w/ all 4 of the currently injured players on the roster, they’re still about $1.5/$2mil under the cap. Last year, they needed cap space to ice a full team – this year, that’s not an issue.

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ve also been under the impression that the Sharks are gonna try and save some money this season and not spend to the cap just because they can. I believe they’ve been coming in at a slight loss and while they view that as acceptable considering the other revenue sources SVSE has, it doesn’t mean that they want to continue that habit.

That and this year the cap is finallly starting to outpace teams needs, I think

Detroit and Chicago are sitting on 5 and 3 million in space that they didn’t bother spending in free agency because it’s not worth it. Even in the Sharks’ case, putting a $3-4 million forward on the 3rd line just because they could afford one is probably bad cap management. It’s a luxury that you could try to get later in the season in trade, etc.

If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.

by Kazoonole on Oct 4, 2011 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't even think of that

but you’re right.

Since the cap went up it doesn’t equate that team revenue goes up by that much as well. So they might in fact be spending MORE than they did last year while also having more cap room.

However they did raise ticket prices too, so I dunno. But then they’re also doing dynamic pricing this year and I’m not sure how that affects overall team revenue.

I think the Sharks are spending like 61 million, which would be an uptick from the 59.4 ceiling last year.

The Sharks will send the players down the day after they place those players on LTIR, so they can accrue space as desired. It’s just that particular day.

I understand that, but I don’t think the team will be doing that this season. The players that can come and go between the NHL / AHL aren’t making a whole lot of $$, plus, the team can’t ever go over 23 healthy players.

In my opinion, if they can, they should get Stalock’s and McLaren’s $$ off their cap. MacIntyre too.

It’d be nice to be able to afford a $4mil+ cap hit at the deadline if they want to.

Is it really in the CBA that a player has to be on the NHL roster to work with the big club’s trainers? Wasn’t aware of that rule.

Ya, but they don’t have to stay there…they had McGinn fly to Worcester, checvk in and turn around and fly back, more than once. Same w/ Demers, checked in at Stockton and drove right on back.

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I mean, I know they can’t practice with the team and what not…just didn’t realize they couldn’t utilize the trainers for re-hab.

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not sure how that works exactly, I know injured Wor players tended to stay there. Most of McGinn’s and the rest of the Worcester Shuttle was due to them being sent down for a day, and then recalled to accrue space.

I don’t know either. A lot of NHL teams are w/i driving distance of their ALH teams so it would make sense to me that injured players work w/ the best training staff if they can but I haven’t ready the CBA (so boring!!!).

by milanahalek on Oct 4, 2011 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think there's a restriction on training staff.

Because Wayne Thomas and Ricci both regularly head to Worcester to check on players and work individually with them. As does Marchment (though he’s based in Worcester moreso than San Jose). I suspect Stalock might get assigned to Stockton, because of that so the team can watch him that much more closely.

Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!

Sounds like the roster has been set

Niemi, Niitty, Havlat, McLaren & Sheppard will not be on the roster submitted today as they are all injured / day to day.

Sheppard & Niitty, maybe McLaren will go on IR, Niitty & Havlat will be added to the active roster and I’d guess once McLaren is deemed “healthy”, he’ll be assigned to Worcester. Once Niemi is declared healthy Sateri will be assigned to Worcester as well.

I’d guess by Saturday, they’ll have 22 guys on the active roster.
