Sharks overwhelmed by Rangers in second period, lose 5-2

Photo

With a five game winning streak in hand, and a perfect record on their road trip thus far, the Sharks came into Madison Square Garden looking for a handful of jumbo sized candy and enough treats to last them until mid-November.

They left with apples, bananas, and dental floss.

The Rangers scored three unanswered goals in the second period, and Martin Biron made 24 saves, to hold off a Sharks bid to go perfect on their eastern swing. According to CSN's Kevin Kurz, Joe Thornton felt like the Sharks let one get away.

"To be honest, they were probably the softest team we played against on this road trip, and we should have had these two points," Thornton said to Kurz and the assembled media following the game. "We played some good teams, and I think we probably should have beat these guys to be honest with you."

New York jumped on the board early against San Jose after Ryan Callahan, working from behind the net, found Ryan McDonagh high in the zone for a one-time that he rifled into the far-side corner. They would get another late in the period after Martin Havlat took an interference penalty to put the 26th ranked Sharks penalty kill out on the ice. Coming off an innocent looking rush Brent Burns' ill-advised attack of the puck carrier sprung New York into the zone with numbers where Derek Stepan corralled a feed from Brandon Dubinsky into the back of the net, giving the Rangers a two-goal lead.

It wouldn't last long however, as Joe Pavelski continued his goal scoring ways and pounced on a rebound off the post to slide one past Biron. San Jose would struggle at the start of the second period as New York poured on the pressure in the defensive zone, but some good saves by Niemi kept the Sharks within striking distance. Pavelski would connect with Logan Couture at the midway point of the period, sending a perfect pass right into the wheelhouse of a primed Couture. Seamlessly receiving the feed, Couture one-timed an absolute laser top-shelf shortside to cut the Rangers down to size and bring back the fresh memories of a blown lead against the Ottawa Senators. Credit the Sharks top line for wearing down the Rangers group and forcing a bad change that led to the open ice available for Couture to unleash his howitzer.

With another blown lead on the horizon for New York, you could almost feel Larry Brooks of the New York Post readying his questions for John Tortorella from the press box. Youtube viewers around the world were done a disservice tonight however, as the Rangers would proceed to pour it on late in the second and notch a trio of tallies in the span of 5:12.

Star-divide

An excellent cross-crease feed from Erik Christensen found Ryan Callahan's tape just as a power play expired, giving New York their second lead of the game. The Rangers would continue to pour it on late in the second period, as Artem Anisimov would knife through the Sharks defense and roof a backhand shot to extend the lead to two. Ryan Callahan would come on again with 48 seconds left in the frame, pouncing on a loose rebound on the far-side of the crease and banging it home to give the Rangers a three goal lead headed into intermission.

San Jose's power play would go 0 for 3 in the third period to seal their fate.

Other assorted thoughts:

  • The penalty kill has continued its struggles from last season and is currently 26th in the League. Tonight hey gave up a marker in the first and another even strength goal that came one second after the man advantage expired (Colin White may have not even exited the box when the goal occurred). Health isn't an issue for the revamped kill-- all notable PK'ers are reporting for duty, and no one outside of Desjardins has been dropped from the unit. Needless to say, this needs improvement.
  • After the Sharks first game, they have received only two goals from their bottom six-- Michal Handzus against St. Louis on October 15th, and Benn Ferriero against Boston on October 22nd. Furthermore, only one defensive pairing (Burns with 3, Vlasic with 1) has managed to find twine from the backend. Considering we've just finished the first month of the season this shouldn't be something that requires any rash moves, but make sure to keep an eye on scoring depth as the season progresses.
  • Benn Ferriero and Justin Braun were scratched tonight for the second straight game. Demers and White both looked off tonight, and the scoring depth issue has been addressed above, but with the team headed back to San Jose I wouldn't be surprised to see both Braun and Ferriero sent down to Worcester.
  • Another reason as to why Ferriero may be sent down? According to CapGeek, if Ferriero plays another game at the NHL level he would have to pass through waivers in order to be assigned to Worcester.
  • A 5-1 record on a difficult road trip out east should have the Sharks back on track, and credit to the team for winning some big games in every manner possible. Despite the loss tonight this road trip was a massive success and should set the Sharks up for a big six homestand.
  • Pavelski obviously was the player of the road trip, but Niemi played extremely well in net and Vlasic was the best blueliner by a country mile.
  • Off to watch "Peep Show", which has valiantly fought to unsurp Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm as the funniest TV show in existence. Enjoy your Halloween folks, and remember that toilet papering a bald guy's house is in fact a hate crime.

10 games and a scramble

Sharks have never been able to win playing scramble-hockey, and the NYR had the Sharks in scramble mode for the majority of the game. Sad but true. The Sharks are 0-2 in 1-day-off-games now. I know, small sample, but the Sharks usually seem to do their best (in general) with 1 day off between games.

Final October Sharkstistics are up. November’s will be posted after the Sharks-Pit game on Nov. 3rd.

Mr. Plank, if by any chance you ever get to interview TMC or other Sharks coaches, please remind them that they could score more goals by getting in the opposing goalie’s eyes. I saw the same thing happen this game, too, that a Shark with the puck looked to the net to see who he could pass the puck to, but there was no Shark to be found. Huge problem for several seasons now, and I, for one, am really tired of seeing it. One guy in the opposing goalie’s eyes will practically guarantee a drastic increase in Sharks goals and Sharks wins.

Go Sharks!

Traditionally, Sharks goals tend to be more about the cycle game.

As is, they pass it all around until they see an empty net. It’s a sound theory, except they haven’t been cycling particularly well this year.

Case in point, Cheechoo: It used to work that Thornton would skate around for a while, pass it around, get it back, then pass to Cheech to score on the open side. Haven’t seen that in ages.

We do get to interview the coaching staff, but I find it laughable that you would think I would suggest to them that they implement something in their game plan suggested by a reader. All due respect and all but… really?

Thanks for posting Sharkstistics. Great stuff as always.

Or suggested by me of course.

In other words, we can sit here and talk about what’s not working and why it’s not working, but there’s a pretty distinct line between editorial analysis and going up to McLellan and telling him how he should do his job.

I think it was more implied that it would be something like “The opposition always seems to have some major net front presences, yet the Sharks don’t seem to have that constant screen. Is this something you’d like to see more of from the players?”. Ya know, the subtle questions that plant seeds. No the “you should play the game like this” statement.

I think you put it better than I did

I usually say things straight-up.
Reminding the coaches what we fans see from “the outside” might help the team, where they might be zooming in on what they’re used to doing. They should at least listen, after all, it’s the fans that ultimately pay the salaries.

I think you're spot on about telling a professional hockey coach how to do his job

But I think that, as a member of the media, it’s completely fair for you to ask a question that’s been a long-standing criticism of the team. Net-front presence aside, the Sharks have frequently been criticized as a team that plays too cute and that can’t score the ugly goals that are the norm in the post-season. From that standpoint, the question about why the team isn’t committed to getting some net-front presence is completely legitimate. Even Pierre Maguire, who really is nothing more than a knowitall fanboy with a mic, picked up on the trend tonight, and he probably only watches a handful of Sharks games each season.

Simple

The Sharks simply don’t skate enough in the offensive zone.

The “new” strategy of shots from all angles is great and all, but it also means that once the shot goes off and someone corrals the rebound, everyone is out of position and has to scramble to get somewhere, including the front of the net. Add in the fact that even if we DO get someone in front of the net, once the puck moves, they never move with it.

The Sharks are a bit to lazy and too cute in the offensive zone. It’ll work against the minnows in the regular season, enough for us to be an elite team, but it always comes back to bite us in crunch time.

Demers really wasn't screening Niemi

Even if Demers isn’t there, Niemi doesn’t save that shot. Glove-side high on a play that went cross ice. Niemi’s a good goalie, but a play like that is just his achilles heel.

…smack after a brutal thrashing? Really?

I’ll be sad to se Ferrerio go; kid has spunk and can score. No idea why we scratched him the last two. I can’t help but think we could have pulled something off with our lower lines had he been on ice. Not getting the resistance to using him at all.

PK is definitely a mess, but our PP was equally horrid tonight. We SHOILD have dominated them on the chances we had when they were shorthanded; instead we let them cdictate play and clear far too many times.

Hopefully they trim flight for the Penguins on Thursday.

In other words, he plays another game, he’ll have to pass through waivers in order to go to Worcester.

That could be a reason as to why he was scratched the last two games.

After watching Ferriero play again at this level, I would be fine with the Sharks saying right now that yeah, he’s a regular in the lineup and he’s basically seen the last of Worcester. Unless/until DW makes a trade for some lower-line scoring depth, Ferriero’s our best option to improve that—and it’s only going to continue to be a problem otherwise (or even so), I’m afraid.

ForeCheck & Puck possession

2 Games in a row and 3 out of 4 we haven’t really been as dominant as last season.. I guess playing on the road might have something to do with that since home team’s like to rev it up (usually). It seems like alot of teams are just pressuring our puck holder very quickly and forcing mistakes or lost chances. On the other end I saw alot of standing around on the sharks side the past 2 games I guess they just try to keep them to the perimeter, I suppose we do have alot of new pieces and pairings/lines but the bottom 2 lines are not looking great on this road trip. Ginner does have some jump in his legs though! Just some thoughts

by Rohans on Oct 31, 2011 10:12 PM PDT reply actions

Yea, it was a matter of zone control vs constant pressure. The rangers always were pressuring the man never letting up, always forcing the pass or the board battles. They won most of the oard battles, and forced passes or shots into multiple defenders allowing for an easy chip or slap back out of the zone.

The Sharks on the other hand were playing zone defense, letting the point and the back of the net do whatever they wanted, much to their detriment.

Though even with the problems, it was really just poor judgement and play by the team defensively that caused the woes tonight. On Callahan’s 2nd, if Andrew Murray had played the stick instead of the body like he should have (especially since playing the body hard like he did away from the puck borderlines on interference) then that goal would have been a sliding pass into the corner.

If Burns wasn’t so aggressive on the PK then that easy 2 on 1 wouldn’t have happened, especially grievous was that even if it had worked and he poke checked it, there wasn’t much time left anyways and it was near the center line so unless it was a full steal he would have only burned 10 seconds maybe. Not worth the risk in the situation.

The PP goal that went through Douglas Murray’s feet, again another situation of zone defense and puck watching instead of covering the man IN the zone. Look at his face when he lands on his knees, that says it all.

I guess you could always find some flaw from the team that gets scored on to why it happened, but most of the Ranger goals were single man decision mistakes on specifically how they’re covering the man that eventually scored it.

Overall, even with the wall of text i’m not terribly worried. Tough night, but losses are how you learn, so hopefully what they take away from this loss is not to count your wins before you have them and head on a swivel.

by VVhirlwind on Oct 31, 2011 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Guess we can't win them all

But I would have loved to see a 6-0 road trip. Ending on a bitter note hopefully won’t carry over to the home stand. Joe Thornton’s comment doesn’t bother me, if you consider the teams we played against this road trip, New York could be considered a “softer team.” I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder, though.

Some positives from tonight: Absolute dominating minute plus from the top line in the 2nd period (holy crap was that beautiful). Also Joe Pavelski, he’s been so hot lately (well, he’s always been hot). Probably the most consistent Shark so far. Can’t wait to see them back at home (sadly, no tickets to any of the games). Re: Ferriero, Braun, and losing to the Rangers...

Starting with the last part first, I happen to agree with Jumbo…the Rangers were the worst team we faced this roadtrip. Thus, losing to them, especially this lopsided, is pretty awful. But, this is what happens when the defense and goaltending suck, and the forwards are forced to scramble around most of the game. Not sure why we see such wild swings from this team, but it’d be nice if they could find some consistency…and the good kind of consistency, too. It’s really, really frusterating to watch a team this talented throw away points to poor teams like the Rangers.

Next, I honestly think that the possibility of waivers is a pretty piss poor reason to not ice your best team possible…and I think Ferriero on the 3rd line is part of the best possible team we can ice. Apologies to Mitchell, Murray, Desjardins, Winchester, and McGinn…but none of them are finishers. Ferriero is the closest thing we have on those lines, and keeping him off the starting roster just seems dumb.

I also think Braun has proven during the few games he’s been here that he’s ready for prime-time. He’s been a force on offense and defense. Honestly, Vandermeer-Braun has been our best 3rd pairing so far this year. And I thought White played much better with Braun than he did with Demers. Demers has looked like such a mess so far this year. I really hope Braun gets a chance to stick…although what I most hope is that Demers stops playing like ass and starts looking like the top 4 D man he was emerging to be last year.

In any case…are there any PK savvy, 20 goal potential guys out there on shit teams that might want to trade with us? Because that would be super…

Totally in agreement, Z...

…we went from playing with constant pressure on the puck (Bruins game) to an abysmal loss where we were chasing it the whole game.

Pretty sure in retrospect the coaching staff and front office will be looking at that one between now and Wednesday.

As for icing the best team, I’m with you there, too. It’s pretty obvious who is working on the lower lines, and if we’re serious about a cup run this year, it is probably a good thing to take into consideration now. If Benn truely has only one more game before the waiver rule kicks in, I can’t believe we would think, “well we only have one game left in the kid this season,” with 70+ left to go…(not including “second season.”)

Yup

Play Braun and Ferriero. More assertive with a hint of at least a little more scroring threat on the 3rd line would help keep the team over the top. 5-1 was awsome though and a great turn arond from their 1-3 start.
The only concerning thing on the coach’s list should be the Pk. When the Sharks turn that around I really don’t think it’ll matter much who plays (unless, whoever is playing really shitty). Less momentum swings on opposing team Power Plays and the Sharks probably cruise into mid season which then DW will probably work his magic again.

Niemi, Burns, and Marleau all had pretty bad games tonight imo.

It’s crazy how Marleau sometimes looks completely lost and borderline useless, and then sometimes he just looks like a hockey god. It’s pretty frustrating. Tonight he looked like anvil dragging down the Joes who i thought both played pretty well. It made me wonder how our top line would look with Couture on the LW but i don’t know if Marleau can even play apart from Jumbo anymore.

Hypothetically Couture/Thornton/Pavelski could make for an amazing line, and Clowe/Marleau/Havlat looks pretty good on paper as well with 2 super fast skaters and then Clowe who’s great along the boards. There doesn’t seem to be much chemistry between Clowe and Marleau though, and I don’t know if Marleau can handle Havlats tricky playstyle.

Thornton's comment

Right sentiment, wrong words.

The Rangers were no better than anyone we played on this road trip, and this sort of performance, regardless of the 3 games in 4 days at the tail end of a road trip, is just inexcusable for this team.

But calling the Rangers soft after the Sharks were the softer team by a country mile on the ice is just foolish.

I’m going to chalk it up to frustration getting the better of Jumbo, because I think his heart was in the right place, but the actual words he said were a dumb thing to say given the circumstances.

5-1 road trip

Was way above my expectations for a 1-3 team that lacked cohesive play. So many new players, it will take time to gel. As I’ve mentioned before, this team will struggle to score from lines 3 & 4. Kyle Wellwood, whom we could have kept for next to nothing has 5 goals and 3 assists and is a +2 in 11 games. He is a better finisher than any of our 3rd or 4th line guys (if Ferriero is out of the line up). I know he’s not fast, but he has a knack for scoring and he handles the puck well. He would fit nicely on the third line with Handzus. Since we got blown out last night, I think a lot of blame can be put on Niemi and the poor defensive play. I like Braun over Demers, better size and same offensive upside. White and Vandermeer is a toss up, but Vandy will drop the gloves and White can’t. Burns has to stop pinching and getting burned. And Boyle needs to pick it up as well. I’ll take 6-4 after the first 10 games with 8 out of the next 10 at home. With Pitsburgh coming in on Thurs. let’s see how our guys respond.

Not a good game

Kinda knew the game would go sideways when Clowe was dumb enough to drop the gloves 10 seconds into the game against a 4th liner – he’s been making a lot of bad decisions this year and for a guy that wears the ‘A’ on his sweater on the road, he needs to be better.

Pavelski & Vlasic were the only two players on the Sharks side that played well last night. Couture had his moments, as did Thornton, but they’re not going to win with that kind of effort.

Not sure what Thornton was thinking w/ that comment, he should probably not badmouth a team that just beat the shit out of them on the ice…but it’s good to see him show some emotion.

The PK needs to be fixed ASAP…they have the personnel to have a very good PK, I have no idea what isn’t working, but a good PK will help keep them in games when they don’t have their legs (or brains).

It was the end of a long road trip, so it’s understable they had a bit of a letdown, as much as it sucks to watch…It was also a very successful road trip!

Rec'd

If I could add something, it seemed like we relied on net front presence like you said mostly on the power play. The vast majority of those plays seemed dedicated to giving Burns, and only Burns, a shot towards the net and setting him up. While that sounds nice on a weaker team, we have wayyyyyyyyyy too many good players to set up only to one person, especially on the PP.

The one line that continues to work the cycle is the second line with Couture and Clowe especially. TMC really should use all his assets and just continue doing what he did before Burns – only with the added bonus of having a Burns.

Amen.

Glad you mentioned Marleau, Stamkos, Ovechkin stat, always a solid support that Marleau scores goals, whether in bunches or spread out. He doesn’t always score, but he still plays a solid game. Get off his back and get in his fan club.

It’s funny to see how fans lose it after a loss. Heck, I was pissed we lost, but looking at the big picture, this team will right it self and play a strong game on Thursday. Not to mention they went 5-1 on a very tough Eastern trip.

If this team went 81-1, losing the last game of the season, everyone would be up in arms and complaining how the team let their foot off the gas, coasting into the post season. I think we, as Sharks fans, need to realize that this is a sport with winners and losers. Some nights we will win and others we will lose. We need to understand that this team KNOWS how to win and regroup after a loss (even after that stretch in January, they pulled it together and had a monster last couple of months).

Also, we have Joe Pavelski, your argument is invalid.

I think...

that all the calls for net-front presence come from two sources.
1.) Watching Holmstrom (the best in the league at it) tear us up with it.
2.) Its one of Drew Remenda’s key phrases.

I’m on the side that the Sharks work better with the cycle, but I see where the net-front presence sentiment comes from. The fact is, we don’t know a sixteenth of what McClellan does. I trust the system he implements.

by Jumbro Joe on Nov 1, 2011 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions

The reason the net front presence strategy works so well for detroit is cuz Datsyuk is stupid good. He can singlehandedly make plays happen while holmstrom just sits in front of the net.

We have skilled enough players that we could probably be successful with that strategy as well but it would probably be a waste of a talented player to just sit clowe or pavelski in front of the net, and they’re not built as well for that role as holmstrom is anyways.

I think our system works best for our personnel. We cycle the puck, look for openings, and guys go to the net when they can, or when they see that were going to get a shot off from the point.

by Khaaz on Nov 1, 2011 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly! Very well said Jumbro… I too am fine with the cycle but I do see a need for more net front presence… in the right instance. PP- yeah, we could screen a little more. 5 on 5, not really needed.

by Khaaz on Nov 1, 2011 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

If I could rec this more than once, I world.

The Sharks have players that are crazy good at puck possession. Their game is keeping the puck away from the other team, passing it around and creating confusion so when they shoot it the defense is out of position. They try to go for rebounds, either shooting them or picking them up to start the cycle again. Placing a guy in front of the net would not allow him to use his shot or strength on the puck.

I understand that everyone wants a Holmstrom, especially since he’s been so damn good whenever we play him. But he’s a player with a specific skill set – he can plant his ass in front of the goalie and tip in pucks better than anyone, but he can’t skate and his shot kind of sucks. Thus, the Red Wings have to create a gameplan around his skill set, which does include a guy screening the goalie as that’s what he does. The Sharks don’t have a Holmstrom – they have guys who play better with the puck on their sticks, so that’s the style of play McLellan has instituted. Forcing the Sharks to go away from their puck possession game would likely work just as well as having Holmstrom skate around and use his shot without going to the front of the net.

And holy crap, this isn’t Game 6 of the 2009 playoffs. This isn’t Game 4 of the WCF in 2010, or Game 5 of the WCF in 2011. This is Game 10 of the REGULAR SEASON. There are 72 more games left. What the hell are you freaking out about?

This is absolutely not directed at anyone in particular.

And I know that disclaimer won’t help, but I’ll wade in anyways…

I think Sharks fans have been pretty absurdly spoiled by the team during its history. While there have been unquestionable playoff disappointments, it’s been almost a decade now since the last time we went home with most of the rest of the league. Beyond that, the Sharks have made the playoffs 12 of the last 13 years and 15 times in their 20 year history. We’ve seen an Art Ross, a Hart, a Rocket Richard, a President’s Trophy, Calder-level performances, a Vezina-level year or two, and a Masterson. We’ve seen an amazing run. And for those of us in the Bay Area, it’s one none of the other local teams have matched (since the Sharks were founded the Niners have made the playoffs 9 times, the A’s 6, the Giants 5, Raiders 4, and Warriors 2). Sure the Sharks have had some horrific seasons, too (hi, 92-93, 94-95 and 95-96!), but mostly things have been rosy.

I think people need to be reminded of the fact that we’ve been blessed with good ownership, good management, good players, and a fair amount of luck in having had a great first 20 years when we could have been awful for a long time.

For me, it’s all about perspective. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t let losses get me down because when I weigh one game against the last twenty years, there’s been so much more good than bad. And while others may not agree with me, I see the foundations being laid to keep the good going well into the future. I want this team to get the Cup. I want to see them put it all together. But I see it as a long-term process. Problems arise and we have to work on them, but they don’t get fixed in one game, one roadie, or occasionally even one season. As long as the general trend is good, though, we’ll get there.

And this so didn’t end up being relevant to anything Matt said. Hooray for rambling.

Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!

It should be safe to send a forward to the net

If you’re getting shots from the blue line. It would seem the whole point of getting your D involved is to allow your forwards better opportunities to cover the offensive zone, get to rebounds, and have more open ice as the defenders have to respect the shot.

The Sharks might be racking up all sorts of statistics, but the fan base is pretty much always looking to the post-season, which has traditionally been a time when the team struggles to find scoring, and seems to lose to the same type of team: teams that can afford to collapse to the front of their net and allow their goaltender to see the puck. When it only takes four losses to end your season, I think we can be forgiven for seeing consistent patterns in losses, and wondering why change isn’t forthcoming. It’d be great if we could be the high-flying team we saw against Phoenix for the whole post-season, but our quality of competition will be much higher. We’re going to see the work-ethic of teams like the Islanders and the Rangers far more frequently, and we’ll need to score dirtier goals.

The regular season is a time to build good habits, and while 6-4 is good, I can’t say I see enough good habits yet. So while it might be too early for doom and gloom, I feel it’s perfectly valid to be disappointed with the team.

As for Marleau, yeah, we’ve been over this many times. You’re perfectly correct in calling him an elite goal-scorer. His point totals are ridiculous. And he’s always been streaky. These are part of the package. 40 goal scorers don’t grow on trees.

However, there’s a reason he attracts more derision that his linemate, Joe Pavelski, who’s a fan favorite in spite of also being notoriously streaky. Patty quite simply takes games off. And there’s a very close relationship between Patty’s level of effort and the team’s performance. It’s most evident in the playoffs, because when Patty scores, we’re tough to beat. But when he goes away, the offense tends to go with him.

In a lot of ways, Patty is becoming Todd Bertuzzi. When he’s on his game, look out, he can’t be stopped. But when he’s not on, you find yourself questioning if he’s worth what he brings.

Marleau is one of the best pure skaters in the league. And yet, last night, he spent most of the game NOT skating. And worse, when he needed to take strides, he was gliding, and looking slow. He’s a big man, and yet he seems to lose a lot of physical battles. That’s one thing in the offensive zone. It’s unforgivable in the defensive zone.

Still, he’s managed to find points the past few seasons. So he gets paid the big bucks and gets to play the big minutes.

I don’t mind that Patty’s scoring is streaky. I mind that when Patty isn’t scoring, he’s not contributing. He’s not opening up ice for his linemates, he’s not playing defense, and he’s weighing down what should be the team’s best line.

Especially comes playoff time, the team goes as Marleau goes. I dislike that our bellweather is a streaky player, who will either be a force, or a dead weight, and it’s just as likely that he’ll be one or the other.

Marleau

I can appreciate your frustration with Marleau and it takes guts to call him out. Like it or not, he is the Sharks. They seem to do as well as he does. I cannot know what’s in his head, especially when it comes to bringing it every night. His personality is shy and his game tends to mirror his image. But as you said, he can score like a MF and he’s ours for this and two more years. If he and Jumbo Joe cannot carry this team to the promise land, then so be it. These are the guys DW is putting his faith and possibly his job future in. I think Patty showed us all a lot last season about his character and guts when he fought Bieksa and got his ass kicked. He’s a complete pro off the ice. Sometimes I wonder if the team would have been better if he never became Captain? Marleau is who he is and he’s the best shot we have at winning it all this year or next. Whatever the case, I always enjoy the ride (that’s what she said).

Add me to the group that’s puzzled by the amount of anger directed toward our best home-grown player ever, by a mile. Patty isn’t, and never was, the key to this team’s success or failure. No recent Cup winning team has been built like that, except the Penguins, because Crosby is a once-in-a-generation talent.

Take last year. The Bruins lost a 70-90 point player in Savard and won the Cup. Their best players in the playoffs weren’t always their top-line players. Different guys stepped up, and they had a deep enough roster to spread the threat around. And Tim Thomas played extremely well.

Patty is a valuable weapon, one of the best scorers in the league post-lockout, but any hope the Sharks have for a championship will rely on him being one of a number of weapons.

What seems to happen to us in the later rounds is that a number of key guys all stop producing at the same time, when we need the opposite, leaving it to one or two guys to try to carry the load.

Pavelski is third in all of hockey in goals created per game.

Only behind Kessel and the criminally underrated Thomas Vanek.

I disagree

It’s up to Patty and Jumbo to step up and lead the way. Last year in the playoffs Joe did that, but Patty was inconsistent in that regard. Vancouver fell short to Boston, in part, because the Sedin’s crapped the bed in the finals. You need your leaders to step up and hold everyone else accountable. Any/all goals by lower line players are a gift.

I agree

Teams do need their leaders to ‘step up’ but ANY team that relies on their top guys to win them the cup will have a really, really hard time reaching that goal.

3rd & 4th lines have the ability to make a huge impact in the playoffs becuase checking gets much tighter and most teams now have 2 very good d pairings that can neutralize the top 2 lines.

Not just Marchand last year, but Bolland with Chicago, Talbot for Pittsburgh…depth players can win you games when the ‘stars’ get shut down, which will happen over the course of a playoff series. It happens just about every year.

IMO

You can change the other lines all you like, but until Patty and Jumbo come up big, the Sharks will continue to come up short. They are the 2 best players on the team (and also the highest paid). We need them to both show up big in the playoffs. Pavelski, Havlat, and Couture will be needed as well. The whole reason we got Thornton was to get us over and so far that hasn’t happened. Yes, the entire team needs to play well (Ben Eager excluded) for us to advance past the Conf Finals, but this team especially will need it’s top two to perform to their best if we’re going to compete for the cup this year or any other.

Right

Kind of like your opinion about Correy Perry. You hate him, but he was the best player in the league last year inspite of your perceived shortcomings about him.

Edmonton comes to mind with Messier and Gretz winning championships and leading their team in points during that time.

If you think this team can/will win a championship w/out Marleau and Thornton leading the way so be it. But it hasn’t happened yet in all their years on this team, and don’t think it will unless they lead the team in scoring during the playoffs.

by douchebags on Nov 3, 2011 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions

My dislike of Perry as a person

Has nothing to do with his ability to score goals. I recognize he’s a dangerous player on the ice that can really hurt other teams.

Plenty of people disagree with him being the best player in the league, he scored the most goals, but those are two different things.

You bring up Gretzky in Edmonton, but he never won it all in LA or anywhere else he played, because a few players cannot do it all, it takes a team. I’m sure you’ll tell me that Gretzky just never raised his game to that level once he left Edmonton, because that’s the only explanation. It’s not like he had any other great players in Edmonton to help him carry the day like a Paul Coffey.

My intent

By posting on this great site is not to inflame or insult. You’re knowledge speaks for itself. My original point seems to be getting lost or misconstrued: I believe that the Sharks have not won it all yet mainly because of Marleau and Thornton not being good enough. Fair or not, that is my belief. You can disagree with me and that’s fine. But the fact remains that this team has made the playoffs every year that Jumbo has been here and he and Marleau were drafted 1 & 2 and are the top paid guys on the team (over 20% of the entire payroll) therefore, I believe ultimately it will fall to them to get our beloved team to the Stanley Cup. Once there, anyone and everyone will need to pitch in. Last year Joe was supurb in the playoffs and WCF until his shoulder got jammed up. Patrick Marleau (whom I respect as a professional and as a person) was not good enough. Were others to blame? Sure. But I say again, I do not believe we can win it all unless both of our stars raise their games to another level. Enough said.

by douchebags on Nov 3, 2011 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

So..

The one thing I’m going to touch here is your “as Patty goes, so goes the team” statement. Because if the last two playoff runs are anything to judge, you could not be more wrong. Literally. Because Patty was bad to descent in the first two rounds the last two years and lights out in the third round both years.

So maybe he should just keep sucking? Okay, obviously not, but I think the evidence pretty clearly shows he doesn’t bring down the team.

by warning on Nov 1, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

lol yeah I was thinking the same thing.

For the record, i love Patty and i’ve never suggested trading him or even not resigning him; but i agree with Elvis about how Patty sometimes weighs down our top like whenever he isn’t “on”. That’s what really frustrates me. It’s not that Marleau is streaky or something (most players are), because overall Patty puts up great numbers and he’s scored a ton of clutch goals for us; it’s just that when Patty isn’t playing well he seems bring his linemates down with him. Fortunately Jumbo is now a guy who never takes a game off, and Pavelski looks to be the same way this year.

Ah I have an idea that’ll satisfy two parties in this thread!

When Marleau looks unfocused and he looks like he just can’t “hang” out there with the Joes (and even the biggest Marleau fans should be able to admit that that does happen), we drop him down to the 3rd line, bring up Handzus, and try our hand at the net-front-presence scheme. Handzus really does a great Holmstrom impression, he’s big, he’s strong, he’s good at deflections, and he’s good at screening. Thornton and Pavelski are both skilled enough to make that scheme work even in 5v5 with a bit of help from pinching defensemen like Burns.

by Khaaz on Nov 1, 2011 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

lights out in the finals?

Patty lost his head to head matchups in each case. He was a minus against Chicago, and Ryan Kessler’s line dominated us against Vancouver. You can make arguments about Joe or Heatley needing to step up, but Heatley was injured both times, and Joe was injured last season.

I'd argue the opposite: imagine how much farther we would have gone with him being on it in the finals...

I think that was JRs point last year.

Again, don’t misconstrue frustration for hate. It’s not. Is it wrong to want strong effort (even if it’s not successful) out of a player that makes more per game than most of us make in a year?

Jersey was down 3-0 to Philly in their playoff series, and, completely out of the blue, they start having Parise and other forwards screening the net. They looked foolish. The commentators made a note about how Jersey had not done this all season, and it was a desperation move. Sure looked like one.

Long story short, Sharks will look stupid if that up and try something new.

And I just went over how retarded New Jersey looked when they tried something that wasn’t in their repertoire. If the Sharks want to start screening, they’ll need to practice it over the months.

Look, I’m not hating on our team at all, but when they put in a sub-par performance (which even Joe Thornton stated), I think it’s within every fans right to point out the problems as they see them. I’m not calling for heads, panicking, or saying they need a total retooling—I think people like Elvis and I are just stating the same things we’ve said in the past…if you do the same thing over and over, and expect it to change, that’s, well, insane.

Or, put more simply, sometimes our standard plays aren’t effective and we need to be able to adapt when that happens.

Goals dry up when the Sharks don’t get the screens, deflections, and rebounds against good defensively dedicated teams. Your argument that Todd McLellan’s system has been so successful in the past doesn’t change my opinion that they need to be able to get someone in front of the net. In fact, Todd McLellan’s system has been, in the past, that we need to get someone to the net, but no one did it with consistency or effectively.

A high shot differential isn’t as impressive when the shots are all coming from long-range, unobscured directions.

This loss doesn’t bother me. That the Sharks’ have failed to effectively screen the goalie, even when that was emphasized by the coaching staff, does bother me. I see a lot of rebounds that end up cleared to the neutral zone.

P.S. scoring goals and being streaky and soft are not mutually exclusive. Some of the toughest, most consistent players are the ones who end up with more fighting majors than points in a season. Did you watch the Sedins these last playoffs? Would you hesitate to call them streaky and soft?

by meetyourmako on Nov 1, 2011 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the Sharks have a couple of different looks on their PP and they adjust what they’re doing based on the other team’s PK. They do get bodies to the net sometimes – mostly the 2nd unit tends to play that way.

However, and this isn’t directed at you meetyourmako, what I don’t get is why anyone is upset with a PP that currently ranks #6/7 in the NHL.

There are definitely a few things with the Sharks that aren’t clicking/working right yet, but the PP isn’t really one of those things.

My point is people tend to just parrot what they hear without doing any of the thinking themselves. Drew says we need to get people in front of the net. He says this a lot. People hear it and assume that’s what we have to do. They just repeat what he says without doing any thinking on the subject themselves.

I’m not saying that we do or don’t have to get in front of the net. I’m just pointing out what I perceive to be a lack of reflection on the subject. For that matter I’ll admit to being guilty of this myself in the past.

However, it doesn’t make for very interesting conversation when people just repeat what the broadcasters are saying.

Not quite sure how that is regurgitation, but whatevs.

PS,

Candidates for funniest show, IMHO, are:

  • Todd and the Book of Pure Evil
  • Kids in the Hall
  • Pre-Will Farrel SNL
  • The first few seasons of The Simpsons

I can’t speak for Curb, but IMO Arrested Development isn’t funny unless you watch it from start to finish. It’s like Lost, if you watch it in the middle with no context, it’s the dumbest sh*t ever.

I will second the early Simpsons though. It’s not the same anymore, but for a cartoon to be going 20+ seasons, hell that’s older than some of the FTFer’s here, so that’s pretty awesome.

Rated M for McGinn.

I agree with the Arrested comment. There are a few that are stand alone gold, but my wife never got it until we sat down over a couple weeks and went on the Bluth journey. It’s her favorite show now.

I watched the first season.

My brother downloaded it. Laughed maybe twice. It’s one of those shows where people make serious faces and lots of goofy noises. Is this supposed to be funny? I feel like it’s designed for pretentious people who find humour where there is none, to be ironic. Every “big joke” seemed to revolve around a group of people in a room, staring awkwardly at each other.

But I will say, it’s not nearly as bad as Big Bang Theory, which actively tries to be anti-funny. I think the creators of that show are on a mission to wipe the very concept of “humour” from human consciousness.

More talking into the wind from me, but I think this quote from Handzus from a few days back remains relevant...
Sharks center Michal Handzus, brought to San Jose for his defensive abilities, didn’t seem all that impressed yet with his new team’s shots-against stats.

"We don’t give up many shots, but the shots we give up are pretty good chances," he said. "I think our next step is to eliminate those and give the shots from outside and don’t give up those good scoring chances.

"I think we’ve been playing OK defensively but I think there is still a way to go," Handzus concluded.

From the 10/25/11 WTC.

I think Handzus is still pretty right on about the problem. The Sharks have had a great shot differential (and I’m sure someone’s gonna say “but the quality of the Sharks’ shots isn’t good”), but they’re getting there on neutral ice and offensive zone possession (and massive own-shot volume), not shot control. I think the core problem is that the Sharks are scrambling to generate turnovers/defensive pressure and leaving themselves out of position when shots come. The strategy would probably work if most of the guys were staying home, but most of the time it’s three or four guys chasing. When they’re successful, they push the puck out of the zone and generate a larger differential; when they’re unsuccessful, the puck is getting to the net unchallenged or, worse, screened by more than one player.

That’s why the Sharks’ shot differential is prodigious and their goals-for/goals-against differential is mediocre (especially when you drop empty-net goals from the equation). I also think that carries over to the PK, where bad habits formed 5-on-5 bleed into shorthanded work and players tend to look even more scrambley and out of position (like Burns, on occasion).

Like seemed to be the case last year, I think a lot of the problem is a lack of trust by players for one another, which is somewhat understandable when you’ve got so many new faces (especially on the PK), but the problem is that they’ve been so bad and McLellan so ready to change the groupings because of it that they’re not developing the trust they need to have in one another as quickly as would be ideal.

Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!

Brent Burns

I think we’re seeing what the Minny crowd was trying to tell us about BB. He seems to take a lot of chances by pinching and then getting burned. I think he needs to lay back a bit more unless he’s on the PP, where he’s a monster. They’ll figure it out and learn in time to play with more trust and p/u on each others moves. I say give it until January before getting too worried about the D and PK. If it’s not better by then, then we have some real issues to discuss.

Some remarks on my earlier remarks...

I do want to clarify part of what I was saying above: when I’m talking screening, I’m not necessarily talking about parking a body in front of the net; I’m more talking about the offensive line having a leading player to screen the shooting lane once we’re in the offensive zone. It’s a moving offensive play that isn’t necessarily incompatible with how the Sharks play now, and it’s not something we haven’t done. In fact, it was done at the Boston game with great success. Every second taken away from the goalie works the odds in favor of the shooter (and beating Thomas is a feat in itself).

I also feel that it’s important for me to reiterate context: when I talk about a game and team performance, I’m looking at that night’s game compared to others, not at the season and team as a whole. The Sharks have been a top 4 team two years in a row, and are a fixture in the post-season since the lockout, that is indisputable. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t areas that can be worked on. Those are usually the things highlighted by games like this one.
