Sharks destroy outmanned Coyotes, win 6-3

The San Jose Sharks have been saying all offseason that they wanted to get out of the blocks fast.

Setting a record for goals scored in a season opener is a pretty decent start.

The Sharks got goals from every line tonight, with Joe Pavelski and rookie Andrew Desjardins picking up two-a-piece. Newcomer Michael Handzus also had a goal, as did Ryane Clowe when he scored on a beautiful top-shelf backhander.

"Overall it was a great start," said Sharks captain Joe Thornton. "I thought everybody played well, had their legs, and fed off the energy from the building tonight. I think once we got the first couple goals early we kind of sensed that they were deflated. Everybody is still learning so we can still get better, but it was a good first game."

It was indeed a great first night for the Sharks, who appeared to be at the top of their game from the drop of the puck. Granted, they took the ice against a Phoenix team who looked like they would be on the losing end of more games than not this year. Still, the Sharks were efficient, precise and lethal with their opportunities.

San Jose's first line truly excelled, as it appeared they did whatever they pleased against the Coyotes. Thornton, Pavelski and Patrick Marleau cycled the puck in a fashion reminiscent of what we saw with Vancouver's top unit in last years Western Conference Finals; the line was completing crisp passes and beating the opposition to the puck all night.

"We've been working on it throughout training camp, just kind of finding where each other are going to be. Just jumping into open holes, we're all pretty smart players so we can read off each other really well," Thornton said.

Tonight, Pavelski was the beneficiary of his line's dominance, as he cashed in twice against Mike Smith. Both of his goals came on the power play, and as has been the case in years past, a strong power play looks like it will be one of San Jose's staples this season.

"We knew from past seasons that [the power play] can set the tone of the game. You either gain momentum off it or you lose it, and we are able to have some success. It fed right into our game tonight," Pavelski said. "As a forward you always like being down around the net, and those situations there. It was a great pass [from Patty on the first goal], I saw it right at the end there and it just hit my stick."

While Pavelski may not score every night, the first line is loaded with so much talent that one of the three forwards should be finding twine regularly.

Star-divide

The stars weren't the only ones who shined, as lines three and four combined for three goals of their own on the evening. Desjardins showed a good deal of the moxie we've been talking about, especially in the moments leading up to his second goal. After receiving a brutal cross check in the back, Desjardins went into the boards and down to the ice. With the puck still close, he collected himself and with a few strides to the net, he chucked a shot at Smith that found it's way through the five-hole. It was a good night for Desjardins, but even when beat writer David Pollak pointed out that the rookie was on pace for 164 goals, Desjardins laughed it off and tried his best to stay grounded.

"You just have to take one shift at a time. I'm just trying to do my job and when you work like that good things will happen," laughed Desjardins. "If you would have said that [I'd be on pace to score 164] at the beginning of the game I would have been probably been laughing at you [laughs], but I'm just ready to build on it this week again."

Michael Handzus also had a strong game, drawing two early penalties and scoring on a wraparound goal. His line, made up of Torrey Mitchell and Jamie McGinn, had long stretches of possession in the Phoenix zone and just missed on a few additional chances. Mitchell looked like he regained some of his speed in the offseason, while McGinn played an almost mistake free game with flashes of the talent he's kept hidden.

Coach Todd McLellan was happy with his squad's effort, and complimented his teams preparedness for their first tilt of the year.

"I thought all four lines contributed. They hit the scoreboard, obviously Desi and the rest of the group. They contributed along the boards, they had some speed and tenacity to their game," said the coach. "I felt comfortable putting them on the ice," McLellan said. Our three and a half weeks of training camp showed up during the game. The Marleau's and Thornton's understand the way we want to play. It was great to see the White's and the Burns' pick it up as well."

However, the night wasn't perfect, as the Sharks let the game get away from them a bit in the final frame. Leading 6-1, San Jose got into the habit of taking penalties and played much of the final frame shorthanded. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Shane Doan picked up tallies in the third with their team on the advantage in the third, and when you add in Doan's first period score as well, the Sharks end the night with a dismal 50% showing on the penalty kill.

Burns, in his first game as a Shark, picked up an assist and showcased his signature bomb from the point. However, he also displayed some of the defensive miscues he's been known to commit in the past, mistakes that will have more of an affect against better teams.

However, with almost a week off, Burns and the Sharks will have a chance to address the subtle tweaks needed to improve. In general, this game was one of huge positives and gives the team a good feeling and plenty of time to get rested and ready before they face off against Anaheim for fame two.

After a game like tonight, though, who wants to wait?

Yay! Sharks win.

Some people were saying the Clowe hit might get a look at by Shanahan. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I hope not

That would destroy the chemistry of the lines.

It looked kinda bad from where I was sitting…and totally unnecessary. Clowe just needs to be smarter there. Probably just be a fine, though.

On the replay

I didn’t see anything. It looked like Clowe might of accidently tripped him or he tripped himself. The look on Clowe’s face was that of “What the fuck are you talking about?” when the guy was on one knee. I like how Clowe didn’t hesitate to hit back right after that when he got hit with a stick. He don’t take no shit from nobody accident or not!

With the rate suspensions have been given out this year, if I was Clowe I wouldn’t mess with Shanahammer.

The Sharks

are gonna have to be even more careful with not allowing 3rd period pk breakdowns. While looking at the game, I can almost bet a team like Vancouver will be looking to expose that if the team doesn’t keep working to finish better.

They had a huge lead … do you really think the Sharks will relax like they did if they didn’t have that huge lead and were playing a team like the Wings or Canucks or such? I dont’ think so.

From my point

of view with how I’ve seen the Sharks over the years, yes. Not always and probably not yesterday since it was the opener but for the most part the Sharks are known for it. It’s like no matter who they bring in that (I don’t even know what to call it) take their foot off the pedal attitude? is still there. It wasn’t just last year in the playoffs. I think it’s one of the main things the team and org has always needed to figure out or push past for a while now to get to the cup. They shed a lot of that rep last year with the help of Thorton and others so I just hope they continue to do so.

A big thumbs down to the Taco promotion...

From what I understand, fans get “a chance to win” if we score in the last minute of the 2nd period…

First of all- I wouldn’t eat those tacos even if they were free

Second- “A chance to win???” What the hell does that mean? How often do we score in that single minute that they can’t just give everyone the 99 cent tacos?

Good stuff

I did like how we pushed the pace in the first 2 periods and how Burns jumped up in the play a little. The PK needs to improve, but that could be blamed on complacency with the lead. But the worst thing: we score 6, but there’s no more free pizza…

Those were

two of the biggest problems last year. I guess it might of been wishful thinking that they could just turn the pk around by the end of training camp. The kicking back in the 3rd period is what I didn’t like. It killed the team in the playoffs and I think it just might be a state of mind that the team has. I’d be careful if I was Tmac as to how he continues to go along with changing that. The PK should get better with time… Handzus just might not be enough. Is it me or do the east to west passes right across the middle kill the Sharks on the PK every time.

by raphelo on Oct 9, 2011 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

We’re not the fastest laterally on the PK, and it doesn’t help that Handzus is slower than everyone except for Douglas Murray.

Solid win...

Hate to see the complacency in the third, and the bad penalties, and the PK issues (which will happen when you take, what, 7-8 minors). However, when the Sharks were rolling in the 1st and 2nd periods, Phoenix looked completely overmatched…like they didn’t even belong on the ice. Will be interesting to see where the team goes from here.

Greiss

Greiss’ performance went under the radar in this post; he did allow three goals but two of them were a result of separate 5v3 situations, and the other one was on a power play. Being perfect at even strength is commendable even if he was facing a weaker Coyotes offense. He played admirably well in the backup role tonight, though I still can’t wait for Niemi to return.

What a great game

i can’t wait to see what we look like once Havlat is in the lineup.

I didn’t think McGinn looked very good though. To me it looked like he was playing nervous and without much confidence. I think Wingels will look great on that 3rd line when Havlat returns though.

Maybe it’s just because of the long offseason, but his speed really stood out. And I thought he mostly used it quite effectively. That’s such a huge factor for the effectiveness of our 3rd line this season, it really can’t be understated (particularly playing with Zeus, not exactly a burner).

Exactly. His speed last night was some of the best I’ve ever seen from him.

I thought the third line was great on the cycle as well. Handzus is an immovable object down low. The guy just bodies up and wrecks house.

Yeah I thought he was solid last night. He was really quick to pucks and he cycled the puck well, and that’s all he really needs to do; that playstyle is really the perfect compliment to Handzus’s playstyle. Once Wingels starts playing on that line i think it could be a damn effective line.

I like

that the “is the 3rd line gonna be able to sustain possesion in the offensive zone” question was answered. Even though I want to see a bigger scoring threat on the line, for now with how it stands I don’t think you can go wrong with either McGinn or Wingels.

Mitchell was good for what he is...

Some speed, some defense, etc. The 3rd line was decent on the cycle. He still can’t score to save his life, though. Not that it should matter much on the 3rd line. That’s not his role.

My review

I was there live tonight, and I have to say the Sharks looked awesome. Phoenix looked simply dismal, too, so that’s a factor here. Greiss stood tall, we seemed to be doing a pretty good job of handling each others’ miscues and not letting ourselves get deflated after goals (though granted PHX’s goals were coming only when it stopped mattering). I agree that the PK needs more tweaking, but I think part of that is them getting into real, it-matters-now game shape still (PK minutes are hard), and part of that was them getting too comfortable with that enormous lead. I have every confidence we will not continue to be that dismal on the PK; it was clear from the way the PK was playing (when they weren’t getting scored on) that the tools are there to be better, they just need to figure out how to use them all.

Re: the penalties: Did it look to anyone else like the refs were evening the calls out a bit there? We were shown no replays of the penalties, which is usually a bad sign, and a few seemed a little strange to me (seriously, Patrick Marleau for roughing)? Not saying anyone was diving, just seemed like they started setting a standard late and kind of took a little pity on the Yotes, which combined with us letting ourselves relax a little did some damage. Poor Greiss, too—he was having a great game and I wish he would’ve gotten the shutout to go with it.

by Salmon of Wisdom on Oct 9, 2011 1:09 AM PDT reply actions

It didn’t make the article, but McLellan mentioned after the game that the calls on both sides may have been a product of early season officiating.

The previous seasons’ x#-days-off records and the every-10-game records will remain. The charts have been changed from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4+ days off to 0, 1, 2, 3+ days off.

Am also trying to make them look better; be easier on the eyes. But not having much success. I think I need some website software.

The PK was really the only concern. Other than that, 5-on-5 was brilliant and the PP was solid as well. And Jumbo ended the night with no points? Amazing.

Greiss’s numbers look quite awful after this game (3.00 GAA, .897% SV%), but numbers are misleading. He was pretty solid out there, and made some tough stops. And I honestly can’t blame him on the PP goals-against… that’s all on poor coverage by the guys in front of him.

Clowe’s hit was disappointing. He’s done some stupid crap a few times now (like going after Ballard in the pre-season). I just wish he’d calm down; sure, defend your Cooch but be smart about it.

It was ranked 5th in 08/09 and 4th in 09/10.

I saw two problems with the PK last night.
1) Way, way, way too much Dan Boyle and NO Jason Demers – they have to change that.
2) Guys were over-committing and that’s a very easy fix. They’re still trying to get used to each other and I think the PK will be good sooner rather than later.

by milanahalek on Oct 9, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Definitely agree on the guys over-committing on the PK. They were better about it early on and on those kills they looked excellent. They’ve gotta do it the entire game every gameand we’ll all forget why we were worried about it.

How about some more Colin White? He only logged 1:44 short handed. I’d think he’s better defensively than Demers.

by bezzerkker on Oct 9, 2011 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I noticed that

I see no reason for Boyle to pay near 5 minutes on the PK and White under 2. We could use both of their TOI more effectively. Looking at the entire roster’s TOI from the game, it was all a little funky from top to bottom.

Maybe something to do with White still getting accustomed to the system, so as the season wears on he’ll be tasked with more responsibility.

Hopefully Burns gets the system down more, too. Can’t say he looked too effective on the PK.

Great game...

I think my only complaints are the 5 on 3’s we kept giving Phoenix, PK isn’t going to look that great when you give them 2 of them in a game. One with 1:20 left in the original penalty.

McGinn looked great! Hope he’s not the scratch when Havlat returns but I think he’s going to be.

Never been so happy with our 4th line! Fairly disciplined and great chemistry. Me likey!

Now we wait for 6 loooooong days for the next game. Hope to see you all on the bus on Friday!

It’s frankly stupid that this team keeps taking penalties while on the PK. They did it twice against the Canucks last year and almost lost the only game they won in that series, after dominating most of the game. It’s just pointless. 5 on 3s are pretty much sure goals against.

I don’t mind an aggressive PK, but they keep going over the line and getting burned.

for a long stretch where the team doesn’t see the bad end of a 5 on 3. Maybe slowing down on the Pk is what they need? With that I still think they did shitty with faceoffs in their own end. Phoenix had way too much time.

WOOOO!!! Great win!

Although I am worried about Phoenix, they really need a long playoff run to get more fans, and I want them to stay in Phoenix. But Mike Smith may be their achillies heel. I’m not even sure the trap may hide his deficiencies, but other than that, they have a good team.

Now with the Sharks, I didn’t get to watch them, but from the highlights it looked like the team dominated and Greiss was solid and reliable.

I liked Joe's play

Granted, I only watched the game from the middle of the 2nd period on, but from what I saw he did an outstanding job at keeping plays alive and he was great on the boards throughout the game too. Considering that the Sharks scored six goals yesterday without a single point from Joe, I wouldn’t say it’s a huge cause for concern yet. (after all it’s only the first game)
Against better teams though, the best players on the Sharks will have to be the best players, so here’s to hoping we’ll see Jumbo’s good stuff in the coming games.

I was there yesterday - a few quick points (apologies if they've already been beaten to death...)

1) Almost everyone looked great – McGinn, Wingels (at times), and maybe a few others were a bit quiet
2) The PK is still shit – fix it. I think we may still need to acquire a solid PKing forward for that bottom-6 instead of using Wingels/McGinn…some of our players don’t push the D aggressively enough (Marleau) but some do (Pavs, Handzus).
3) Greiss will be a decent back-up, but I still want Nemo back ASAP. Greiss is an alright goaltender but this was against a crappy PHX team and with a great D in front of him
4) I think Colin White was pretty solid and he should get some more minutes along with Demers over Boyler (especially on the PK)…no need to play Vandermeer over him unless there’s an injury or to give him a day off.

Thanks for the heads up Angy

And yes, trolling other team’s sites is not tolerated.

That being said, I took a look at what he posted over at Arctic Ice.

It was negative and bitter and very rude, but I don’t think it’s enough to constitute trolling. I think the members of Arctic Ice treated it accordingly, and I don’t think we need to do anything more, other than the usual plea for civility.

Angy, I understand that you like the Jets. And that’s fine. But there have been some Jets fans who have been absolutely classless when it comes to treating Atlanta and their fans. That’s all sharkzfan talked about, and it definitely struck a nerve with me as well.

I don’t blame Winnipeg for having a team. I blame the Atlanta Spirit Group. I could go on and on and on about how those guys are complete idiots. I’m not sure how they became rich, and I sure as hell hope that Bruce Levenson goes bankrupt. I’m glad the players go to a place where the ownership cares, and as a result the fans care. Good for them. But that doesn’t mean that Jets fans (and the announcers) have to keep rubbing it in.

Frankly, nothing seems to have changed once the team moved to Winnipeg. New city, same team. It’s just that the owners care more (obviously… a dog would care more than the ASG) and thatMAY make a difference in the long run.

Just as we shouldn’t judge the Thrashers fans that now have been rude to the Jets fans by the actions and words of a few.

Old-time hockey: No, but hitting should be prevalent… Shanahan’s retarded suspensions were overzealous, but it looks like he’s had a good talking-too and the officiating is better now.

European players: They fucking rock!

Canada is the best: Hell yeah! Though Scandinavia’s cool too.

Hockey in the south: Good, but only if the market is there to support it. Like in Nashville and Carolina.

Not to mention the LA Kings who outlived two football teams and compete against 2 basketball and 2 baseball teams. Ducks do fine as well.

Dallas did fine when their ownership wasn’t stupid, they have ample competition.

SJ is part of that group, we have 2 football teams and 2 baseball teams and a basketball team nearby.

Competent management is the key, the Atlanta fans gave them a long time to actually build a decent team.

Meanwhile cold weather teams suffer too, the Blackhawks had huge attendance issues when they sucked, not to mention all of the Canadian teams that got shipped out because they had poor attendance too.

Don’t discount the effect that the stronger Canadian dollar has had. When the Canadian teams had a 20-30% hit due to the exchange rate, the effect spiraled all the way through the system: ticket prices, operating budgets, player salaries, etc.

Winnipeg wouldn’t have gotten another shot if the exchange rate stayed the same.

Exactly which of the suspensions was questionable? These were all pretty blatant headshots that should be removed from the game if we want to see high quality players have anything resembling a career.

The notion that hitting is going to leave the game is just alarmism.

But no. See, there’s a big difference between targeting the head and hitting the head. Quite often, it’s not intentional. It just happens. Of the suspensions I’ve seen, I haven’t seen any that were clearly intentional.

Plus if you watched any of the games on that first Thursday, the hitting was at a minimum… Guy were intentionally missing checks to avoid fines and suspensions. I’m glad that got cleared up is all.

Hence the videos explaining the differences

No suspensions have been given in cases where the head changes position. In those instances, the onus has remained on the hittee.

However, if the position of the head remains consistent, then the onus is on the hitter.

These points have made in the suspension videos.

I’m arguing what I actually think in this case.

This and...

Overpriced + Undersized = WTF
Quizno’s can be good, but for that money, I might as well fork up a few more dollars and go to Ike’s Place or Mr. Pickle and get a sandwich that would actually fill me up.

But that Quizno’s horseradish sauce is pretty awesome. Gotta give it that.

I went to this one store that absolutely sucked. The sandwiches were sorta warm, and the bread ridiculously hard.

I think Elvis pretty much summed it up.

He has his moments. I mean, he definitely was a fan favorite in just one year in Atlanta (“That’s impossible… there are no fans in Atlanta”, he responds).

I guess it depends on what night you get him.

Chicago still has mixed feelings on him as well

I think the consensus I get over at SCH on him is his hot and cold nature is not missed, but the success they had during the Cup run would not have been the same without his contributions.

Always good to have a Sharks win.

Also, Heater and Seto did very well for their Wild opener. I hope I’m in the Bay to catch the game versus the two teams.

Yeah they looked good and they look like they have a lot of chemistry together. They both set up each others goals which is pretty awesome.

by Khaaz on Oct 10, 2011 12:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Honestly I think it has more to do with the chemistry of them together with Koivu. Koivu is a setup guy like Thornton, though unlike Jumbo he can skate faster than an iceburg so where Jumbo sets up through god like hands vision and brains, Koivu sets up with good hands and great skating. This combination fits well together with Heatley’s snail-like movement.

Though I suppose you can’t underestimate the motivation and bond building power of being traded away together.

Fleury wasn’t playing because of the back to back, and for whatever reason Malkin was a scratch.

I’m not sure why the Pens have already played 3 games though. I mean, pretty much everyone else got one game this weekend… and then has to wait till Thursday or so.

I’m not sure who’s done the league’s scheduling in the past few years, but the guy seems like an idiot.

Well, they were out in western Canada.

Makes more sense to get through a three-game road trip as soon as possible so they can get closer to home that much earlier. they play again on Tuesday though, against the undefeated Florida Panthers.

I think Nugent-Hopkins needs a smaller size jersey, he looked like he was drowning in that thing.

Can anyone place the song that played during the intro video for the opener? I’m trying to update my Sharks playlist on iTunes.

What a game

Remember that ’05 Buffalo game when we got Thornton and the Sharks displayed total control on ice and you had this giddy feeling that you were witnessing a new era in Sharks history. Thats what this game had.
I still cant get over that Huskins is replaced by Burns and Wallin is replaced by White, its like Wilson got away with breaking the law or something.

Breaking Goalies for Another Season !!!

I’m pretty sure Smith heard all my words of discouragement in the 2nd period !!! Sitting in the 4th row and having a LOUD booming voice has its perks ^^ He just hung his head in shame each time he skated near our section between plays andI told him how well he was playing…

Game 5 of the playoffs I got Lugo to look right at me… he went on to lose that game….

Get ready opposing goalies… you are gonna have an earfull this year in the 2nd period !!!

Methinks some of the code in the content of this article is breaking the front page

I did a little digging around in the HTML, and it seems that this article is formated in a fashion that all the paragraphs are wrapped in DIV with a style of TEXT-ALIGN: LEFT applied to each.

This seems to be a departure from the formatting of other articles where P tags are used instead of DIV tags. From my experience I would guess that a DIV tag is not being closed before the break and causing the sidebar to show up underneath the main content column on the front page of the site.

I could be wrong, probably if you took this article off the front page for a moment to see if the sidebar went back into place, that would tell you if there is a coding error within the article. In any case I hope it can get resolved soon, as its a super pain in the ass to have to scroll to the bottom of the front page to checks the FanPosts, etc.
