Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi make their return to HP Pavilion tonight to face their former team in a game that is so chock full of storylines it's getting hard to keep track of them all.

First up is Brent Burns, who made it clear that while he still has a lot of friends in Minnesota that he wants to see succeed individually, his competitive nature doesn't allow him to hope for success when it comes to his former team.

"I’ve been watching how they’ve been doing, hoping that they would lose every game," Burns told Mark Emmons at Working The Corners. "You have to be competitive to reach this level and I’m a pretty intense guy. And when a team doesn’t want you, you sure don’t want them to go 82-0. I have a lot of friends there and you want them to score six goals and lose."

"Now it’s like an ex-girlfriend," Burns continued with a particularly apt description of the circumstances. "You really don’t want her to get the white-picket fence and the great job. It’s like a good country song."

Working The Corners also caught up with Devin Setoguchi and Dany Heatley yesterday in a post that can be found here. Both former Sharks spoke about tonight's upcoming game and reflected upon what it means to them-- essentially they want the two points and remain focused on their current team, but admitted that it may be bigger than just another game on the schedule.

It's hard to say definitively what the reaction from HP Pavilion tonight will be for both Heatley and Setoguchi as they make their first appearance in HP Pavilion since being traded this offseason, but one has to figure it should be a positive. Both players were big reasons as to why the Sharks made it into the Western Conference Finals for two straight seasons, scored some big goals at opportune times (Setoguchi especially), and helped the Sharks land the services of Brent Burns and Martin Havlat by virtue of their talents.

They were the ultimate professionals both during and following the trade, and have had nothing but good things to say about the organization since. Furthermore, Setoguchi's pedigree as a Sharks draft pick (along with his love for the team at a very early age) should earn him some bonus points from the wino in section 221 that has had a few too many before the drop of the puck.

"Should" being the operative word here.

Star-divide

Minnesota comes into tonight with a five game win streak in hand, as victories over Vancouver, Calgary, St. Louis, and Detroit (twice) have vaulted them into fourth place in the Western Conference. Their underlying shot numbers haven't been that great throughout the run however-- Minnesota has been outshot four out of five times during their win streak, with their total deficit ringing up at 144-170. And yet they've managed to outscore their opponents 13-3. So what gives?

What hasn't gived* is more like it. Yes, "gived" clearly is not a word, but sometimes style (if you can call it that) trumps grammar. Transitions aren't easy, people.

The Wild have benefited from some absolutely mind-boggling goaltending over the last two weeks, as Josh Harding and Niklas Backstrom have combined to post a ridiculous .982 SV% during Minnesota's last five games.

It has been the type of goaltending controversy head coaches salivate over-- the backup (Harding) gets back to back starts against a team he's historically had success against (Detroit), and plays so well he gets the start twice more. Then, with nearly two weeks since his last game, the usual starter (Backstrom) gets the call because Head Coach Mike Yeo doesn't want to leave him on the bench for that long. Backstrom then proceeds to carry his team to a 41 save shutout win on the road against Calgary, and a goaltending controversy (oh what a glorious goaltending controversy) is born.

Mike Russo of the Star Tribune is guessing that Backstrom will get the start tonight against San Jose. He has a lifetime .906 SV% against the Sharks while Harding has only faced San Jose once, posting an .861 SV% and giving up five goals in the start. No official word on who gets the call for the Sharks, but you don't need to be Nostradamus to figure out it will be Niemi.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-3. Goals by Burns (x2), Havlat, and McGinn. Heatley and Setoguchi combine for the Wild's three goals, and McGinn's marker proves to be the difference. I have yet another opportunity to write a post dedicated to his earth-shattering achievements, but end up eating too many chimichangas on Friday and take a nice long nap.

Lately I’ve been falling in love with the condensed games you can watch through the Vault. 10-11 minutes of just pure highlights—saves, goals, fights, etc. And you can watch without knowing the final score, so there’s actually some of that real tension involved in not knowing what happens.

My prediction...

Heatley lazily skates through the first ten minutes, but then dangles like he did last year in Ottawa only to be stopped by Niemi. Later, he pulls out a one-timer from the slot that makes people think its 2005.

by Jumbro Joe on Nov 10, 2011 5:07 AM PST reply actions

I think Heatley is going to be stopped cold by the defense because they know exactly how to play against his sluggish butt from practices, Seto will tear it up though causing White to trip over himself at least once.

Go Sharks!

I’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time!!

I sorta feel the same way as Burns but for my own reasons, I hope Heatley and Seto do well this year, but the worse the Wild finish, the higher that 2nd round pick gets.

I expect both Heatley & Seto to play a very, very good game – same for Havlat and hopefully Burns. Should be a fun game.

by milanahalek on Nov 10, 2011 7:30 AM PST reply actions

That's right

I think next year’s draft needs to turn out extremely well for the Sharks so I agree. I wanted Minny to make it to the playoffs but now especially if whatever reason they don’t, it works out better for the Sharks.

by raphelo on Nov 10, 2011 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

Wild Fan here

I promise i’m not trolling, just curious if Burns has cured himself of his mental mistakes in the defensive zone that he was having the 2nd half of last year? His offensive game, makes up for it for the most part, but if he could cure that he has all the skills to be a Norris contender for you guys over the next 5 years. Don’t get to many Sharks games in MN so all I have to go by is the stat line.

by ThatGuy22 on Nov 10, 2011 8:01 AM PST reply actions

Not a troll, good question

Burns has struggled a bit in the defensive end this season, especially at the start of the year. He’s been partnered with Marc-Edouard Vlasic for the most part, which has been beneficial for him. Vlasic is the Sharks best defensive defenseman and has helped hide some of those mistakes.

Burns has only gotten better defensively as the season has gone along however. We covered it in two posts— the first one about two weeks ago, and the second one yesterday. I expected him to make more mistakes than he has lately, as he has seemed to find a bit of a groove. We’ll see how it plays out but we’ve been happy with his play.

Ya, its imperative that Burns is with a defensive defensemen, because he sure does like to play in the offensive zone. Thats why he was partnered with Schultz for his entire career. Well should be a good game tonight, Sharks are who they are and the Wild are playing good hockey at the moment.

Looking forward to this one...

Had it circled on my calendar since the trade. I know I will cheer Seto and Heatley…once. After that, they are the enemy. The Sharks do desperately need points, you know. No time to get all sentimental. When we have a 20 point lead on the rest of the conference, then we can be all soft and warm and cuddly. Wonder if Heatley will get crank-shafted. Have to think if either of them are coming into the zone and see Dougie there, they’ll just turn around and go back to the bench…have to be smart after watching him destroy people for the last few years.

I wonder if Harding would be willing to stay behind wearing a Niemi jersey when the team takes off after tonight’s game. Hey, I can dream…

I’ll be wearing my Heatley teal jersey tonight. A little nostalgia for a big game. It would be nice to see both players get recognition tonight for their services with the Sharks. If anyone has a chance to hear some boos, it would be Heatley- but I hope he doesn’t. I expect a lot of cheers for both players, and a lot of boos if one of them happens to score. Which reminds me, was there EVER a better home debut for a Shark than Heatley’s hat trick? I think not.

by Ronnibily on Nov 10, 2011 8:53 AM PST reply actions

I know you said HOME debut but...

The ‘First game as a San Jose Shark’ that stands out most to me was Nabby’s debut against Colorado, which was at Colorado.

A 0-0 goaltending clinic that was Nabby (and his 39 saves) against the Hall of Famer Patrick Roy. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a better debut by a Sharks player. Sorry to get off topic and a bit nostalgic.

But yeah, Heatley’s home debut was awesome!

by milanahalek on Nov 10, 2011 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

Although, to be technical, Nabby’s first game was actually in relief of Steve Shields against Nashville—in which the Sharks came back and gave Nabby the win.

Only worth mentioning because it’s one of only a handful of Sharks games I’ve been able to attend over the years. And yeah, it only helped me be a bigger Nabby fan over the years having been there.

BUT I do hope they are on the losing side of the scoreboard tonight. Sorry guys, love and miss you both but if you’re not wearing teal inside HP, you must lose.

Sharks win 3-2… Wild goals by Seto and Heatley. Sharks goals by Havlat and Burns (x2).

Since last year though Braun’s been my favorite young Shark and always thought he’d pass Demers. Just not this early in the season if at all this year. I had my doubts if Braun would be playoff ready but seems to be doing really well so far. So hopefully McL can find an affective way to work something out between the two.

Vlasic / Braun

They moved Braun up with Vlasic about half way through the LA game and they were being used as the shutdown pair…they looked very good together.

Not sure how long the pairing will last, I think maybe McLellan is trying to find a ‘comfortable’ partner for White.

Burns has been better defensively as of late. Might be best to use Vlasic to help Braun, as Burns shouldn’t need supervision.

I wouldn't mind him.

I always liked Hagman with the Leafs. He didn’t do too well in Calgary, but they are terrible. He’s solid at both ends of the ice, can play either wing, and has a few 20 G seasons to his name (back with the Leafs). The 3rd line really does need a guy who can score some goals. Hagman might be that guy. He’s also pretty quick, or at least he has been in the past…and is not afraid to go get pucks and carry them out of the zone. To be honest, I haven’t watched him this year, though…

He’s also in the last year of his deal. Not sure if we can fit the rest of his 3M cap hit…but I thought we had some room, so its possible.

Which would be close. We’re also carrying 8 D men, so there’s some wiggle room.

He is amazingly mercurial

Even more so than Seto was. But when he’s on he’s one of the best. I don’t think he fits into our plans right now, though.

I was looking forward to this game but I’m going to see the Kings/Nucks tonight. Damn, I need to remember to check the Sharks schedule when purchasing other tickets.

My friend had almost on glass tickets. I gave em up. One because I probably couldn’t sit through a game at Staples without the Sharks playing, and two because of tonight’s Sharks game.

Sheep

That’s my nickname for him now. Any word on Sheppard? I haven’t heard an update on him for some time. We gave up a third round pick- that has some decent value. We didn’t trade for him to play Worcester. How is he healing up?

by Ronnibily on Nov 10, 2011 1:33 PM PST reply actions

During one of the last broadcasts they said he’s still quite a ways away – at least another month, I’m thinking closer to 6 weeks…he said today that there’s no time table for his return.

should earn him some bonus points from the wino in section 221 that has had a few too many before the drop of the puck.

Please, as a season ticket holder in 208, after sitting in 221 for a season, I find that there are far more rowdies in the 207-209 end of the ice.

Seriously, we had season tickets in 209 last year, and moved over to 208 this year, and they are both the rowdiest sections in the arena.

Tonight works perfectly for me. Watching the game will distract me from the wait for Skyrim.
As soon as the game’s over, I’m driving to Gamestop for the midnight launch, driving back home and playing nonstop until Monday morning.
