Mike Smith blanks Sharks as Phoenix defeats San Jose 3-0

A committed Coyotes team who was looking to make a statement after being trounced 6-3 in their season opener got their revenge tonight, shutting out the Sharks 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd at HP Pavilion.

Radim Vrbata, Boyd Gordon, and Patrick O'Sullivan scored for Phoenix, while Mike Smith made 31 saves in the victory.

"We remembered the first game of the season. We definitely talked about it," Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata said. "We wanted to make a better effort and hopefully get a better result."

The first period started off with Phoenix and San Jose trading scoring chances but quickly settled into a low-key affair as both teams kept the opposition to the outside and limited shots in the center of the ice. Phoenix would strike first courtesy of HP Pavilion's new endboards after a shot off the stick of Ray Whitney went wide of the net. It careened out to Coyotes forward Radim Vrbata, who would pounce on the loose puck and bang home a shot past a sprawling Thomas Greiss.

The Coyotes would score again in the opening frame, this time with under a minute remaining in the period. Following a turnover by Dan Boyle in the neutral zone, Phoenix would come down the ice on a 3v3 rush which the Sharks managed to handle well. A seemingly harmless backhand shot from Boyd Gordon managed to squeek by Thomas Greiss after he got a piece of it however, putting the Sharks down a pair heading into intermission.

It wasn't the start Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan wanted to see from his team.

"I thought we were lethargic between the ears. Some of the things that we talked about even in the first five minutes of the game," McLellan said. "We were in the wrong spots which tells me that we weren’t mentally ready to play tonight, and when you are not there mentally the physical part of the game doesn’t follow."

San Jose would come out firing in the second, as McLellan swapped his top six centerman. Joe Thornton got paired with Martin Havlat and Ryane Clowe, while Patrick Marleau saw time with Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski. It worked for the most part as San Jose showed a lot of jump in the neutral zone and outshot Phoenix 11-5 in the frame, but strong team defense by Phoenix and some big saves by Smith held San Jose off the board.

"Our (defense) was fantastic tonight. They did a good job clearing and letting me see the pucks," Coyotes netminder Mike Smith said. "You know, we deserved to win that game. When we play like that, we are going to win lots of games."

Star-divide

The third period started off slow for San Jose before they received a power play at the 6:17 mark. A frenzy in front of the net that Smith somehow managed to keep out after Joe Pavelski took a wack seemed to re-energize the Sharks, as they picked up where they left off in the second period and began to pour on the pressure in the Coyotes zone.

With the team pressing for a goal however, San Jose shot themselves in the foot with a breakdown in their own end. A loose puck along the sideboards drew four Sharks up the ice like moths to a flame, with defensemen Brent Burns and Dan Boyle eventually finding themselves near the top of the circle and away from the net. The Coyotes worked the puck down low for a 2 on 0 opportunity in front of the helpless Greiss; Patrick O'Sullivan tipped home a feed from Kyle Chipchura to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead and put the game out of reach.

Mike Smith turned in a spectacular performance for Phoenix, making 31 stops including a beauty on Brent Burns in the second period and countless others throughout the tilt. He's been the difference maker this year for Phoenix, making a strong case that it may be Dave Tippet's defensive system and exemplary coaching abilities which allow the organization to consistently churn out above average goaltending numbers. Credit should also go to Phoenix's defenseman and forward group for restricting second chance opportunities-- they tied up bodies and sticks in front of the net well tonight, locking down the Sharks on the rare rebound left in the crease.

The Sharks penalty kill has performed quite well during the last three games, turning around what was once the 29th ranked PK in the NHL. They are much more aggressive on the puck, hunting down opposing players in the defensive zone and forcing them to make quick decisions instead of setting up. Phoenix managed to find a soft spot in the Sharks coverage between the circles twice tonight, something the Sharks will need to tweak going forward, but overall it was a positive performance for a unit that needs more efforts like these to stay competitive.

The third line of Michal Handzus, Torrey Mitchell, and Jamie McGinn managed to generate some good scoring opportunities in the Phoenix zone, combining for seven shots on the night and avoiding being out there for a goal against. San Jose has managed to win games without much scoring depth this season, but seeing that line begin to come together can only help as the season moves forward.

San Jose's 8-2-1 record since dropping three games in a row in early October lessens the urgency of a shutout loss like this. Yes the offensive side of the puck was inconsistent, 19 giveaways are a concern (even if half of them were in the more acceptable offensive zone), and a woeful faceoff percentage (43%, including just 31% on the power play) are all issues that need addressing. With that being said, I felt that the Sharks did a good job of limiting Phoenix's scoring chances throughout the night. They were fairly tight defensively, didn't give a whole lot up, and managed to control the amount of rubber Greiss saw from in tight. Nothing to put a feather in your cap over, but something to consider in lieu of a good performance by Phoenix.

San Jose will have a four day break in action before facing the Detroit Red Wings at HP Pavilion on Thursday.

So, what magical factor determines which Sharks team we get?

Because we either get the on-paper, ridiculously stacked Sharks that go 5-0 on the road, or the slacker Sharks that have everyone asking, “Why aren’t you as good as on paper?” I think it’s totally rad that the Sharks have been winning recently, but these extremes are hard to understand. There’s no grey area with the Sharks: They’re either amazing, or Columbus.

Weird. Srs.

This break

should do the team good. Sometimes the puck just won’t go in and when your playing a team that wanted the win as bad as PHX, the Sharks just got their ass kicked. Demer’s should get the call if Braun has another not so good game imo (McL usually seems to give players an extra game to bounce back). Maybe they underestimated PHX? I hate to say it but it looked like they took a few pages out of Anaheim’s playbook here and there. Smith was awesome and I think the game could’ve been different if Greiss wouldn’t have let that second goal walk right past him. Feel bad for him at the same time since he got the call on yet another night where the Sharks let themselves get pushed out of the game. Long break which usually insn’t good but they get a few days to think about the mistakes and always bring it against the Wings so here’s hoping they get their game back after this bump in the road.

just my opinion

but I think the “bounces” start to go your way more when you’re mentally in the game.

What? Occasionally, a team is going to lose. There may not be some explanation for it. Nor does there have to be an explanation. It just… happens.

This wasn't one

of those games. I’d agree more with that in a one goal lose, not getting any calls or if there was injuries and the flu going around, not a 3-0 shut out. Where even Brent Hedican and the post game crew had a lot to say to why the team lost. Everyone could see that the puck just wasn’t going in but then how do you account for the 3 goals against. It’s not bad to talk about how or why the team didn’t show up.

First off, I agree with you

This game, I thought, was more of a mental issue. Clowe and TMac said as much.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing to talk about how/why the team didn’t show, either. But sometimes, there just isn’t any reason for it. I guess that’s the point I was trying to make.

Yep, a 60 win season is a rare thing. I’m glad to see that our loss was because of simply poor mental preparation for the game and thus poor mental coordination in the game. Our defense was decent in limiting shots, but that is because that didn’t require pass and movement coordination, only coverage assignments and decision trusting.

I'd rather

see the Sharks get handed a defeat where they played their hearts out than this garbage. They looked uninterested throughout the majority of the game. Games like this have no place on a team that wants to win the big one in the Spring.

they've got

the rest of the season to work and build on their mistakes. In that sense I’d say who cares it’s just a loss.

have to agree with raphelo. this was NOT one of those games. They were not in this game mentally at all and just were not competing. I can’t remember the last time they were THAT awful on faceoffs. especially considering the fact that Phoenix isn’t exactly an elite faceoff team by any stretch either. That just shows how lazy and detached from the game the Sharks were. The only saving grace was the PK. They looked really strong on the PK, other than that..this was closed door meeting bad.

Every team has games like this.

There are > 80 games and a couple of them are going to be sucky no matter how good a team is.

by Briceratops on Nov 13, 2011 1:14 AM PST up reply actions

I wouldn’t say “amazing or Columbus”. Because Columbus is just plain awful.

I know it’s ironic, but the Sharks play more like Winnipeg. They seem to be playing well, but it’s some illusion. There are some bad defensive breakdowns, and the offense just takes shots and doesn’t finish.

Such a strange game

Our team was doing a lot of good things in the offensive zone. We created a lot of havoc in front of the net but nothing was going in for some reason. The Sharks will score a lot of goals on most nights if they keep playing like that.

We were very bad in the defensive zone tonight. A lot of miscommunications between defensemen and mishandling of the puck. I don’t think you will see a goal like Phoenix’s third goal again. I still have no idea how two people get left THAT alone in front of the net .

Braun looks BAD tonight. Very bad IMO. I think it might be time to let Demers get another shot

Did they make some big mental mistakes that cost them? Definitely. The second goal came off a turnover in the neutral zone and the third goal was a huge breakdown (as you mentioned).

However, I disagree with the assertion that the team was “very bad” in the defensive zone tonight. Phoenix barely had anything going all night, didn’t notch many scoring chances, and weren’t able to sustain pressure in the Sharks zone. Greiss had maybe two or three really good saves— everything else was fairly elementary.

I think Demers gets a shot on Thursday as well.

Yeah

that last goal was crazy. They were so busy trying to score, they forgot to defend. Tmac was pissed and embarrassed. He’s probably gonna crack the whip next practice. I know there’s no excuses but all the players I saw interviewed after the game just seemed frustrated yeah but also just tired and kind of out of it. I really do think they need this break.

Faceoffs

Tonight, Jumbo had 35% tonight, Marleau had 40% and Andrew Desjardins had 40%. Thank goodness that Zeus gave us a solid 55%.

Last game against the Wild, Jumbo had 42%, Patty had 56%. In the game against the Kings before that, Captain Tusk had 48% and Captain Awkward (it’s what the A on his sweater is for, right?) had a miserable 29%. I

What’s happened to our usual face-off wizardry? We haven’t had a game where all of our lines win the majority of the faceoffs since the Devils.

by bezzerkker on Nov 13, 2011 12:20 AM PST reply actions

I'm a bit concerned about the faceoffs, too.

Not so much the Kings game (because lately they ALWAYS own us on faceoffs and we need to solve that, but it’s the norm for now), but the ones since are an issue. Some of that might be that Couture and Pavelski aren’t taking draws (though the other low averages aren’t good). Logan regularly outdraws Marleau and Pavs generally is second behind Jumbo for percentage for the high-minutes guys. Without them drawing, there’s more pressure on the other guys, especially with them both on a line with Jumbo, where essentially the three best faceoff guys are fighting to have faceoffs at all.

Some of it might be not having the shield of a Nichol/Malhotra type guy to take the faceoffs against other teams’ specialists. But I think it also factors in as some of the mental unpreparedness that is floating around the team at the moment.

I was at the game tonight

with two friends that were watching their first live hockey game. Needless to say, not a good game to get introduced to Sharks hockey. Not even a single home goal to celebrate. 0-4 on the PP. An 2 hour, 30 minute exercise in futility. Simply pathetic.

I, for one

wouldn’t be surprised to see phx in the playoffs again. Also, I don’t think this Sharks team has hit their stride yet (gotten “over the hump,” “turned the corner,” “gelled,” or whatever). It’s somewhat impressive that they’re doing as well as they are, considering.

Very disappointing, many of the same ol’ problems of the past several seasons.
I wonder what a coach like Tippett could do with all of the talent that the Sharks are stacked with. Am I questioning TMC? Possibly, but remember this is a vent. IMHO he is letting the team talent coach themselves. When is he going to coach them into getting every bit of talent out of them as they’re capable of, in every game? Seems it’s the talent that keeps our team in the running every season and not the coaching. It’s been looking that way to me for awhile now.

Faceoffs are bothering me this season. Sure, there are only two outcomes for a faceoff… but this is an area that the Sharks are usually so strong in. I’m not sure what’s changed recently… maybe it’s time to put Pavs back into that spot.

And from the sound of it, TMac was more pissed at the team in front of Greiss. I think he said that Greiss could’ve had a shutout, and the team still wouldn’t have gotten a point… so there’s no point going there [talking about the goalie].

Sure

But the team was doing quite well in faceoffs early on in the season. So much so, that Puck Daddy mentioned that the Sharks were doing well even while not having Pavs take draws.

Suddenly, FO’s are an issue. That’s not a good thing, by any means. If anything, it’s worst for the PK.

That wasn't the most exciting Sharks game I've been to...

A couple of positives – Vlasic was once again awesome!!!
I thought the 3rd line generated quite a few good opportunities and looked good for most of the night – same for the 4th line.

Phoenix is a good team, they earned (and deserved) the win.

I thought the Sharks as a whole looked a lot better in the latter half of the game, but credit Phoenix and Mike Smith (which I hate to admit since he’s burned me in fantasy hockey many a time) – they really limited SJ’s second and third chances.

Agreed on the 3rd line. Man if Mitchell makes contact on that baseball swing, it’s a 2-1 game and who knows what happens from there?

I'm not too down on the Sharks' play tonight

Phoenix wanted to win, and it showed in every aspect of their game tonight. When a team is rolling like that, it’s very hard to counter. The Sharks have the tools to be able to counter against a team playing well like that, but they just didn’t put it together last night.

I give more credit to the Coyotes for winning this game than to the Sharks for losing it. Hope the Sharks get their mental stuff figured out before Detroit.

I'm kinda meh on it.

I missed big chunks so maybe that was it, but it felt to me like Greiss biffed a goal, the Coyotes got a lucky one, and then the Coyotes got to play a slow-paced game, focus on keeping the puck away, and let Smith see anything and everything from distance.

For missing big chunks

That’s not a bad summation. The second goal was pretty weak, but Greiss didn’t really stand a chance on the first and the third one.

The Sharks had some juicy scoring chances (Pavs’s point blank shot over the net and Mitchell’s mid-air swat come to mind), but it just didn’t work out yesterday.

Rated M for McGinn.

And, as best I can tell, we couldn't buy a drop of puck either.

I missed the majority of the game, as I was at Quinceañera on my wife’s side (which always wins…had fun), but I did catch the highlights thanks to @FearTheFinInGame and NHL Gamecenter on my phone.

So, if I heard this correctly, 1st period looked poor, so opening the second Tmac swapped the 1st and second line centers?

Probably a strong move, and a safe one to try, given how we normally dominate PHX.

I’m not going to worry too much about the loss, but I will moan quietly over allowing PHX a shutout in our house for the first time since, what was it, 1997?

Ugh.

I do find it concerning that, as a team, SJ seems to have difficulty covering all the details for more than a game straight, and before people leap all over me on this, what I mean is, it sure would be nice to see the PP, PK, faceoffs, and 60 minutes all come together for more than one in a row.

IMO.

Same here

Being at the game and not able to listen to the TV analysis or radio analysis or follow along here, Im always interested to see how my impression of the game matches up with others.

And my first thought was, “well, they certainly put in a good effort out there…” Except for the 1st period, I thought they controlled play, and carried momentum except when the 4th line was out on the ice (I am still failing to see what purpose Andrew Murray and Brad Winchester serve). Smith played well, the Sharks were burned by 1, ONE, awful breakout and an unfortunate play by Greiss.

Faceoffs have been a problem, but that happens when you lose a Nichol and Malhotra in back to back seasons.

I was

fine with it all until the last goal. Still don’t understand how that happened? Even though the puck wasn’t going in, all it really took before that was a messed up, crash the net hail mary to get back into the game. Win or lose the team was pressing, and then it all went away.
