Don't get me wrong. The Kings still have a very good team and could definitely catch fire with three quarters of the NHL season left to play.
Still, their early season struggles have made them a team that's more middling than dominant, as most suggested they would be. The addition of Mike Richards has paid off on the offensive end; the dynamic center has 19 points in 23 games played this year. Despite that, they're eleventh in the West (25th in the league) in goals scored, and they're giving up an equal amount of goals to their competition. Not a good way to be successful.
They may have just one less point than San Jose, but they've done that in three games more than the Sharks team they face tonight. As I said before, there's plenty of time for Los Angeles to right the ship, but time may be running out for their head coach Terry Murray. As unfair as it might be, Murray has been given a skilled team... something that comes with high expectations and a low margin for error.
Much of this may sound familiar, and that's another reason why it's far too soon to write Los Angeles out of the Western Conference picture, or even the race for the Pacific Division title. Just one year ago, the Sharks got off to an equally disappointing start (as I'm sure you all remember), but got hot in the second half on their way to defending their Pacific Division title. I wouldn't like for my team to be in that position and have to work their way out of it, but it can be done.
Nothing would be sweeter for LA than to start a new winning streak against the team that took them out in the playoffs last year. As such, San Jose shouldn't expect an easy match tonight. As most rivalries go, teams usually get riled up to play one another regardless of any recent misfortune.
Coming off a loss to another rival in Vancouver, though, the Sharks won't be an easy opponent either. I'd agree with Todd McLellan that San Jose played one of their best games of the season in the loss to the Canucks, and should come out ready to go for an important divisional game.
The Sharks will look to put up a heavy shot total against the Kings, who have been out shot in seven of their twelve November games. While Jonathan Quick is still putting up strong numbers, he's not playing out of his head like he was in October.
What San Jose will need, both tonight an going forward, is improvement from defenseman Dan Boyle. The all-star caliber blue liner is definitely slumping, and while it's not uncommon for a player of his age to start to plateau from a skill perspective, the plummet that Boyle has experienced can't be explained by normal progression. We don't see this continuing, but it makes you wonder if there's some kind of injury or other unknown circumstance slowing him down.
Prediction: Sharks win 5-1. Goals by Boyle (x4) and McGinn.

Go Sharks!
It’ll be interesting to see what McLellan does with the lines if Handzus is unable to play tonight.
David Pollak wrote a very good article on Boyle last night…it’s worth a read. Boyle’s so hard on himself but he made a very good point about the game changing and that he’s having issues adjusting his game. Hopefully, if that’s all it is, it’s just taking some time for him to find what works.
Lastly, with 2 coaches being fired today – all I wanna say is LA, please DON’T fire Murray!!!
That was a good read
He’s right too, everyone (Sharks included) is playing the trap these days and eliminating Boyle’s ability to swiftly move the puck through the neutral zone.
It’s looking more like a C-League game this year with all the hacking.
It’s kind of depressing when you think of it.
i didnt
get to see the sharks-nucks game on saturday, though i did listen to the second half. Interested to see what kind of rebound game they play against the kings tonight.

Oh.
So making bad passes, shooting at the feet of Canucks players, and almost zero battle to the puck due to poor skating is good Sharks hockey? What exactly is BAD Sharks hockey then?

Surprisingly, I agree w/ Evil
I was at that game…most of the game, they sucked. Shot selection was bad, passing was just as bad as Wednesday when I went, and Nemo let in a few iffy ones. I don’t see how this was that good of a game at all…
Go Sharks!
High SOG count, rushing the net, and lots of traffic in the o-zone.
They SHOULD have scored more. they just didn’t. It’s like the Hockey God paid back the game we shouldn’t have Won last Wednesday by the same metrics.
Biggest fault, I see, is what I bitch about incessantly: Weak side, all zones.
They were all down on that in practice on Sunday, though, so we;ll see how they look tonight.

The Sharks almost always have a high SOG count...
often it ends up being useless due to horrible shot selection, so a lot of those are crappy shots.
They rushed the net somewhat well, but once again, not enough, and the traffic in the zone came from 2 out of the 4 lines, so that needs to be addressed as well…
Go Sharks!
I agree that the Sharks usually have a high shot count, however, they had many high quality scoring chances and they were the better team against Vancouver. I also think they played pretty well.
As Noctro mentioned, sometimes, the other teams goalie steals a game.
As Plank posted the other day, the Sharks blog The Neutral has been tracking scoring chances.
Leslie Knope: "...but it has a lot of heart."
April Ludgate: "That's what people always say when something sucks."
Fear The Fin's Fifth-String Moderator !!
Schneider played very, very well - no doubt about that!
However, if the Sharks played to their max. potential, they could have cracked him…and I don’t think they did. When key players like Boyle, Clowe, Handzus, and Havlat weren’t playing to their max potentials, that’s not going to happen.
Go Sharks!
As most rivalries go, teams usually get riled up to play one another regardless of any recent misfortune
Why are we rivals with them again? I actually kind of like the Kings. And we hate the Ducks, and they hate the Ducks, so we should be friends. And if they also hate the Stars, we can be extra double friends.
The Ducks don't hate themselves though. (well maybe this year they do)
Which is why we can’t be friends with them. But since LA hates both Anaheim and possibly Dallas that sets us up for potential friendship.
Hey remember that time Anaheim beat us in the first round?

I disagree
They may have had our number the last two years but other than that I don’t think there is enough history. There is a lot of history with Anaheim and Dallas, they are in our division, and we always play physical and chippy games with them. With Detroit we have a good amount of history and after the last three years the rivalry has really taken off. First in 08-09 when we were competing with them for the top spot in the Western Conference and played some of the best regular season games I have ever seen against them that year (the 6-5 game at HP Pavilion with the Marleau GWG really stands out), and then the last two years in the playoffs. While I have immense dislike for both Chicago and Vancouver, I wouldn’t necessarily call them rivals yet.
meh
I’m not calling them rivals like AHA, DAL, and DET. I agree the history isn’t there yet but I wasn’t saying it was.
I just can’t think of a more annoying team and fan base than Van so I put them at the top of my list. The cheap play and arrogance from the fans is second to none.
I agree about the rivalries, but...
I hate Vancouver more than Detroit because Detroit is mostly a classy team and organization. Their fans may be annoying, but the Canucks are a shitty org. from top to bottom imo including the fans.
Fuck the Canucks. Go Sharks.
Go Sharks!
I hate Vancouver more than I hate Anaheim.
Pack of cheaters, they are.

Not cheater. Actors.
Didn’t hear a damn thing about Burrow’s finger after the game. I loved Joe’s comment from the bench, though, when the ref came over:
“You gotta be fucking kidding me.” And laughing it off.
And was there any supplemental on LaPierre’s Axe-Chop on Zeus after he was flat on his back on the ice? Hell no.
They are the Montreal of the WC.

Vancouver is worse
Habs aren’t as bad as Lappiere, Burrows, Kesler, Sedins, Bieksa, Edler, Luongo, etc.
Go Sharks!
If Dan Boyle scores four he should make the NHL’s number one star for the week along with a star placed at the entrance of HP Pavillion in his honor.
