Sharks cap off mammoth comeback with 4-3 shootout win over the Penguins

It wasn't the start they wanted. It was probably the result they deserved. But after the dust settled following a first period where the Sharks were outshot 15-4 and gave up a pair of goals in the first 2:04 of the game, San Jose got to work and began to claw their way back against one of the NHL's premier teams, scoring three goals en route to a shootout victory.

"I think after the first everybody touched the tusk and it brought us some luck," Captain Joe Thornton said following the game

It was a spectacular effort from a team that wanted to avoid a lull after going 5-1-0 on a six game road trip, and a gritty performance that showcased just how resilient this team can be when pushed to the brink.

Patrick Marleau potted a goal in the second while Ryane Clowe and Jamie McGinn scored in the third to erase the Penguins lead with 4:54 left in regulation. After a 4v4 overtime period fraught with dangerous scoring chances on both ends came to a close, the game headed to the shootout where Thomas Greiss continued to put on a show of athletic dominance. He stopped all three Pittsburgh opportunities, while Ryane Clowe deviated from his normal backhand roof shot to go forehand on Marc-Andre Fleury, and the Sharks locked down two points in a game that seemed out of reach.

The night started poorly for San Jose, as starting netminder Antti Niemi was pulled from the game following two goals on six shots. His 2:04 of ice time was the second shortest start in Sharks history, eclipsed only by Evgeni Nabokov's 1:57 appearance on January 29, 2000 where the former Sharks netminder gave up two goals on four shots against. Deryk Engelland scored 24 seconds into the tilt after Joe Pavelski committed a turnover in his own end, and Evgeni Malkin found the twine after sending an innocent looking puck to the net that seemed to careen off Brent Burns skate in front.

San Jose would continue to struggle in the first period following the wake up call however-- despite giving up two goals in two minutes and watching the starter get pulled, the Sharks would go on to get outshot 15-4 in the opening frame. The Penguins were hunting down puck carriers in the nuetral zone and jumping on the puck carrier in the cycle with ferocity, nullifying everything the Sharks attempted to do.

But in the second period, things began to change.

"We turned our heads on. We started to skate. We made plays and looked like we were actually interested in playing," Todd McLellan said. "Then in the second period we found an emotional attachment to the game. We began to come close to their work ethic, and then we worked our way into the game. That doesn’t happen too often where you give away a period like that and then come back."

Star-divide

The second period began with a bang, as Ryane Clowe dropped the gloves to start the frame and looked over to the bench in a way that suggested he wanted his teammates to follow suit. And follow suit they did-- San Jose completely reversed the momentum from the first, racking up 17 shots in the second period and holding the Penguins to a mere 6.

Patrick Marleau would cut the lead to one at the 2:37 mark, flashing the speed that has made him one of the premier goal-scorers in the NHL. After exiting the zone with the puck, Marleau sent a nice pass off the boards to Martin Havlat, who played give and go with Marleau and sprung him into the zone with speed. Marleau drove hard down the middle of the ice and wristed a shot that snuck through the left arm of Marc-Andre Fleury. San Jose would continue to pour on the opportunities in the frame, but a loose puck that careened off the skate of Evgeni Malkin into the net midway through the second put San Jose down by a pair heading into the third.

The Sharks started out slow in the third period, relying on Thomas Greiss to continue his stellar play to keep them in the game. With Marc-Andre Fleury doing his job at the other end of the ice as well, it seemed like only a matter of time before the clock would become the enemy-- things began to turn around seven minutes into the period however, as Marleau and Burns barely missed on back to back scoring chances.

And the Ryane Clowe and Jamie McGinn struck.

After Martin Havlat entered the zone with speed and, dangling like Ron Jeremy on a Saturday night, sent a silky smooth pass to open space where only Ryane Clowe could grab it, the Sharks got their mojo back. Clowe lifted a scorching backhander up top past Fleury to cut the lead to one, getting HP Pavilion back into the game.

It would take six minutes of game time, but San Jose got the equalizer after relentlessly pressuring the Pens. Following a nice play by Michal Handzus to control the puck along the boards and find a passing lane, Jamie McGinn hammered a one-timer in tight through the five hole of Fleury for his first goal of the season and knot the game up at three.

The Sharks and Penguins would continue to trade chances for the rest of the game, including a stellar 4v4 overtime period, before heading to the shootout where Thomas Greiss and Ryane Clowe would seal the deal with three saves and a shootout goal respectively.

"I thought we did a great job responding.  Greiss was great. They got that weird goal off the shin pad," Ryane Clowe said. "We got better as it went on.  They are an Eastern Conference team and it's great to get two points from it."

Some assorted thoughts from tonight:

  • It goes without saying, but that mammoth tusk the team bought for Thornton to recognize 1,000 games in the NHL is absolutely historic. A wooly mammoth guy indeed.
  • What else can you say about Thomas Greiss. Utterly superb tonight from start to finish. At one point he ended up between the circles after sliding to a stop following a save. That kind of aggressiveness has paid off for him thus far this season.
  • Martin Havlat, Ryane Clowe, and Patrick Marleau had very good games, and Justin Braun had his best game of the year tonight. With Jason Demers continuing to struggle to start the year, Braun is a nice option to have on the backend. We initially thought he would be sent to Worcester following the road trip, but if he can build on his game tonight, he will stay in the lineup.
  • McLellan mixed up his lines throughout the game tonight, playing Couture with Pavelski-Thornton and dropping Marleau down to play with Havlat-Clowe. It remains to be seen whether or not these will stick as time goes along, but Couture and Thornton have always played well together.
  • Rest assured, there will be a Jamie McGinn article tomorrow. He's been great this season in a checking role and it was a matter of time before he potted a goal.

I love me some Thomas Greiss

He has been stellar this season. I really hope he’s not chained to the bench anymore after this. I stand by my statement before the year started that he’s our most talented goaltender. Now that he has confidence, he could really turn the tide for us…if he’s allowed to.

I still Think Nemo is our best shot

He is a pretty solid consistent guy he does make some awful mistakes… but he thrives mainly of good team Defense which he didn’t get much in the beginning of last year if you remember, or last night I would like to see him handle some reads and scramble situations a bit better… But I still think he is the guy

by Rohans on Nov 4, 2011 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

He HAS been no less than stellar

And wow, you called it, that he’s our most talented goalie – which I did not see coming but agree with now – two years ago, I didn’t foresee Greiss developing to what he is today. Honestly I thought he wasn’t very good at all, but he must’ve had a great goaltending coach in Sweden, because he has really improved leaps and bounds.

by JenLovesHockey on Nov 4, 2011 9:29 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Actually, it’s the Sharks goalie coaches. Greiss wasn’t very good in Sweden, but he worked his ass off over the summer…I think I remember reading he spent a lot of time in SJ with Corey Schwab.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Corey Schwab is an absolute beast.

I got to see him play regularly when he was with the Albany River Rats. He was my favorite player, and was a huge part of the calder cup championship in ‘94-’95. He was a phenomenal goal tender, such a quick reaction on everything, made some unreal saves. When he got moved up and traded the Rats pretty much slowly deflated after that. I followed him for a little while and he never really got the chance to fill in as a #1 netminder mostly because of injuries.

I’m sure Schwab has had a lot to do with keeping Sharks net minders in top condition.

Griess was insane last night. Love the last poke check in the shoot out.

Mitchell played very well last night. I thought he was one of the best sharks in the first period and then further into the game. He was forechecking well, holding pucks deep in the zone and really complemented McGinn and Handzus.

Nice to see the comeback

But the Sharks need to look at this game as a learning experience.

There’s just NO excuse for coming out as flat as they did this game. The Pens were without Crosby and Staal, and halfway through this game, they lost a defenseman, and we STILL spent most of the game chasing.

This is a character win for sure, but I stand by my statement in the GDT. Through 11 games, this is not an elite team. Yet.

They have all the players and the tools to be that kind of team, but they’re not there yet. This game should show them that they CAN be, but they need to be that team for 60 minutes a night. They’re not always going to have the benefit of teams missing key players, and being able to come back.

Greiss always had the talent and quick reflexes to be a great goaltender, his only real problem was his over-aggressiveness which is an easily correctable problem that he looks to have fixed now.

Keyword being SAVE lol

Being aggressive and challenging shooters is a good thing when the shooter has no other pass options.

Over-aggressiveness is when you slide way out to challenge a shooter and then the shooter just passes the puck to an open teammate for a wide open net goal. Greiss hasn’t done anything like that yet; he seems to now recognize when to be aggressive and when to stay in his net. I’m sure he’s bound to make a mistake like that sooner or later but so far he looks great so why not play him and test him to get a good understanding of where he’s at and how much he’s improved?

I’m sure we’ll be praying that Greiss gets some starts later in the season when Niemi’s racked up 60+ starts thanks to Mclellan, so why not get started now when Greiss is playing his best hockey yet.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Havlat can roll on

any line and was affective next to Thorton and Handzus. Makes Thorton shot more and got him to go to the front of the net. Hopefully Tmac sticks with Van/Braun, plays and keeps Ferriero and moves Mitchell down for the next game. I don’t think Mclellan really has a choice but to keep Benn since there really hasn’t been any other competion to bring some scoring to the 3rd line.

by raphelo on Nov 4, 2011 12:39 AM PDT reply actions

The top two lines can really be made up of anyone.

The third line looked the best so far this season with Ferriero, Zeus, and McGinn on it while they were on the road trip.

Mitchell brings the best element of speed & defensive zone control, but Ferriero brings a little more puck control instead. The latter seemed to mesh better with the other two’s playstyles. Putting Mitchell on the 4th would add some speed there to help out Desjardins and Murray/Winchester/Whoever.

Please don't eat the unicorn.

Mitchell

What’s everyone’s problem with Mitchell? He may not be putting up many points right now but try watching him off the puck. His speed is an absolute necessity next to Handzus and the two of them seem to have a bit of chemistry.

McGinn is getting better with each game and if McLellan leaves that line together for a while, they’ll start producing. They were the only line that played well last night from start to finish.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Aside from that being a tad bit of an overstatement…Ferriero has his moments, but isn’t any better at board battles or hanging onto the puck.

If the Sharks can put someone better than Mitchell on that 3rd line great – but that someone isn’t Ferriero.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know, it’s different skill sets, and I really liked that 3rd line when it as Ferriero. I’d agree it’s a bit of a lateral move, but it could shake things up.

I don’t hate on Mitchell as much as some others, but he could stay on his feet a bit more.

It would be nice if he could stay on his feet more, can’t argue there. But, after last night’s game, the 3rd line deserves to stay together, see if they can build off of a very good game.

Ferriero is kind of caught in an awkward situation, he’s really not a good checking line forward, but he’s also not good enough to crack the top 6 here, which is really where he probably belongs.

I think Mitchell just needs to calm down a bit.

He’s playing a little frantic right now. He’s skating/working hard, which is great, but it’s causing him to overskate the puck a bit which leads to him falling down and sliding all over the ice.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Thing with Mitchell is...

He’s not a goal scorer. He’s AMAZING at pressuring the puck with that speed of his, but that’s precisely why I prefer him in a checking role. Let him centre the fourth. He’ll chip in a goal here and there and generally make life miserable for opposing forwards who fall asleep. He’ll find his zen there.

Yeah he could be a really good 4th line center.

This is why i didn’t want us to sign Brad Winchester. He’s wasting a roster spot that could go to someone like Ferriero. We could drop Mitchell to 4th line center and bring Ferriero in to play LW on the 3rd line.

Winchester’s not bad, he just doesn’t offer much on our team. We might as well have kept Jamal Mayers, at least he can PK.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't like Winnie playing as much as he is.

He’s one of those spare guys you have on your roster if you want shit disturbed. A. Murray – Mitchell – Desjardins would kick all kinds of ass.

Third should probably be Ferriero – Handzus – McGinn. That line’s been some kind of special for us.

And while we’re at it…
1. Pavelski – Thornton – Havlat
2. Marleau – Couture – Clowe

Because why not. Great thing about our top 6 is that, aside from Thornton centreing the first (and, arguably, keeping Cloweture together), you can mix and match it however you like.

Where Mitchell plays and whether or not Ferriero is in the line up has absolutely nothing to do w/ Winchester getting a contract.

McLellan doesn’t see Mitchell as a 4th line center, he sees him as a 3rd line winger – has for the past 2 years.

The 3rd line is being used as a checking line right now – yes, McLellan wants more from them but as it’s contructed right now, it won’t be a ‘scoring’ line and putting Ferriero in there instead of Mitchell won’t make it a scoring line either, it will, however, make it less of a checking line as Mitchell’s defensive game is a whole lot better than Ferriero’s.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ve seen Mitchell has a 3rd line playmaking winger for the last 2 years too, but he doesn’t seem to be able to put things together for more than a few games at a time.

Plus, if you look at qual comp, our 4th line is seeing the highest quality of competition, so if we’re going to use our 4th line as a checking line then why not drop Mitchell down onto it to help them out?

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

if you look at qual comp, our 4th line is seeing the highest quality of competition

And this is why taking advanced stats as the end all be all is not a good idea.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not, but qual comp is pretty straight forward. Why’s our 4th line seeing the highest quality of competition tmac?

Mitchell actually has the lowest qual comp and his corsi still isn’t very good.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

This is because the other teams seem to be changing when our 4th line gets out there to exploit the matchup. Our 4th line is really not that good, so matching up against them is huge in games.

by Sharks_Own on Nov 4, 2011 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Well obviously teams try to do that, but it shouldn’t be happening so often that they have the highest qual comp. Tmac either needs to step his line change game up, or he needs to stop playing our 4th line against the other teams’ best players so much.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I somewhat take it as a compliment that teams send their best after our 4th line.

Someone

somewhere on FTF said that with all the players DW got rid of last year, everyone’s gonna look to blame someone for everything over everyone else now (Demers or Mitchell right now). I had the same thought before the start of the season except I had maybe Vandameer and definitely McGinn added to that list (glad I was wrong… so far… J/k). I don’t know about everyone else but I’d just rather see a more well rounded player out on the 3rd line.

As for Ferriero, the main reason why I was against the team signing anyone else before the start of the season was to give players like Ferriero more of a chance to break into the team. Even if he’s not a 3rd line player he’s shown that he can be affective. And for all the competition talk McL has talked about Benn definitely deserves to be on the team right now.

by raphelo on Nov 4, 2011 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, if you feel it’s necessary to blame whatever on one or two players feel free…but there’s only a handfull of guys on the Sharks who’s effort you can’t question game in and game out, Mitchell is one of them.

Ferriero is not an upgrade to Mitchell and he’s only proven to be effective in very small spurts – this recent call up, he was great in 1 game OK in 2 games and invisible in the 4th. If he wants a spot on the team he needs to show consisteny when he gets the opportunity and he hasn’t done that.

I like Ferriero and would like to see him play, but not at the expense of Mitchell or McGinn.

by milanahalek on Nov 4, 2011 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Naw

just whoever isn’t playing well at a given time or as well as people think they should. Fans zero in the players all the time who seem to fugde up more then the rest over the course of a year, every year. So someone is always gonna get picked on for bad games unless it’s like the first Anaheim game. They need time to get back into the roll of things and gel and what not but just like when Demers wasn’t playing well, Braun came in. The same should be done to Mitchell or McGinn, not just the bottom 3. Not to keep them out of the team cause like with Demers Tmac seems to be giving him a chance to get back into the team every other few games. I just think Benn should be treated the same. I don’t mind Ferriero being the healthy scratch for the rest of year but he should get his shot in whenever any of the bottom 5 need to step it up. But as always your probably right and McL will probably only continue to play Benn in case of injury. It’s not right though I tell ya, it’s not right.

Think of it from management's perspective.

They’re at something of a crossroads. They know he’s good, but he also doesn’t show up every night. So what do they do? Do they give him a job at the NHL level and hope he finds consistency, or plug him back into the AHL where he’s in a position that his next call-up will effectively be his last?

Personally, I love Ferreiro, and I hope to see him stick, but if I were in charge of a very good Sharks team, I’d certainly be on the fence.

Greiss was very impressive & game 11

Greiss was catching shots and holding on to the puck, where Nemo gives up the juicy rebounds. Greiss, Niitty, and Stalock style is what the Sharks tend to play their best, as they don’t have to worry as much about clearing rebounds as they do with Nemo. Next game, ride the hot hand and let Greiss start, IMHO. Nemo will get warmed up, in time, after playing the last 2 games as though he was ill (it’s possible).

Sharks game 11 is a shootout win 4-3 over Pit.
Game 11 last season Sharks lost 0-2 in StL
at 11 games this season: 7-4-0 / 14 pts., 34 GF – 29 GA
at 11 games last season: 5-5-1 / 11 pts., 29 GF – 28 GA

Mclellan's obviously reading my FTF posts
Hypothetically Couture/Thornton/Pavelski could make for an amazing line, and Clowe/Marleau/Havlat looks pretty good on paper as well with 2 super fast skaters and then Clowe who’s great along the boards.

Those could be really great lines, but like i said in the post – Marleau and Clowe don’t seem to have much chemistry really, and Havlat seems like he could be a little too tricky to really gel with Marleau but i’d like to see more of those lines to see how they go.

by Khaaz on Nov 4, 2011 4:01 AM PDT reply actions

Really?

I thought Marleau worked really well on the second line yesterday. He just seemed to assert himself because he didn’t have the luxury of waiting for Joe to set him up. And Clowe-Marleau-Havlat seemed to find each other for some juicy scoring chances.

  • Goal 1: Patty morphs into Patrick Fucking Marleau on this shift – pass off the boards to Havlat, Havlat soft pass back as PFM flies in with speed and beats Fleury glove side. Also loved how McGinn drove hard to the net to create a 2-on-2/going for the rebound.
  • OT: Marleau and Clowe set each other up for possible game-winners in 2 sequences, same shift.

And a quick glance at the shot chart: Clowe – 6, Havlat – 6, Marleau – 5. Obviously some of those came with playing with different linemates, but they worked well together to make a solid Plan B lineup.

Rated M for McGinn.

Yeah, I thought the second line of Clowe-Marleau-Havlat worked really well. Making Patty play center last night seemed to really wake him up and get him more engaged in the game. I wouldn’t mind seeing that change continue for a few games…maybe it will stick.

Rest assured, there will be a Jamie McGinn article tomorrow. He’s been great this season in a checking role and it was a matter of time before he potted a goal.

Thank goodness for that!

And I saw a picture of the tusk over at HFBoards. It’s great seeing just how confused they are over why he got one. There’s the quote, of course. And also the fact that Jumbo is sort of like a mammoth: Jumbo and hairy.

A tale of two teams

It was the worst of games, it was the best of games…

  1. Star: Ryane Clowe: What a leader!
  2. Star: Thomas Greiss: Amazing play keeping the Sharks in the game!
  3. Star: Jamie McGinn: Much deserved tying goal and he was huge all game long!

That look Clowe shot over to the bench after his tussle was priceless.

As goalie trade-bait goes

Nabby is clearly going to be the most sought-after commodity (if there is a market—last year there never really was one during the season) because he’s shown he’s still got it, plus he’s on a minuscule contract on a team with three goalies. Then you’ll have the same situation in Florida, to some extent, when Clemmensen comes back, with Theodore and Markstrum already ensconced.

So yeah, Nitty…off the injury, with that contract…

It's early

A lot can happen between now and when (if) Niitty is healthy enough to play. Greiss has been very good, but who knows if he’s going to keep up this level of play (I’m NOT saying he won’t), or if Niemi gets hurt, or if Greiss gets hurt.

It’s way too early to have any idea what may happen if/when Niitty is ready.

Mammoth Win!

I def got my money’s worth at that game last night. Wow! Niemi seems to not be an early season goaltender, I am guessing my January (like last season) he will be back to form. Greiss looked amazing. I’m so proud to see how he has developed. I feel very confident with him in net, which is more than I can say about Nemo at this time.

Very glad I was there to see Jumbo be honored. He’s my favorite Shark and he deserves all the praise in the world for his hall of fame worthy career (winning the Cup will lock him in for sure) and leading this team by example. His daughter was adorable and seeing him with her, that mammoth sure went “soft” (yeah I know, great play on words).

Starts are an issue but I’m sure that will be addressed. For now, I’m enjoying the fact we are resilient and I’m ready for the $7M goaltender to come to the Tank this weekend. Going to try to make my 2 1/2 year old godson watch the game in the Thornton jersey I bought him… wish me luck!

Great game after wading through the intial dross of the first period

One thought, or really question i should say is, why couldn’t we keep Wellwood. He will not keep his insane shooting percentage but could you imagine his 5 goals on the third line with hadzus and ginner? Thats really my only headhshaker from this offseason so far, I like Wellwood.

and people are ready to throw Niemi to the curb. Too funny. Griess has some severe fundamental positioning flaws and is terrible at handling the puck, but hey, lets not let facts interrupt our love fest for the guy. I’m glad he did his job when he came in, but he’s certainly not better than Niemi.

by BillytheSid on Nov 4, 2011 12:06 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not quite at the point where I'd want to throw Niemi under the bus...

But I can’t imagine what kind of a pain in the ass it is for the coaching staff to know they’re going to need to give this guy a stern talking-to several times a year. Yes, all goalies have off nights, but Niemi’s off nights are nothing short of catastrophic.

He hasn’t displayed “severe fundamental positioning flaws” yet this season, and he hasn’ t been terrible at handling the puck either, what are you talking about?

I don’t think anyone’s trying to throw Niemi under the bus (cept maybe Zero lol). Niemi’s a great goaltender but he’s struggling right now and Greiss is playing his best hockey, so why not give him a few more starts and ride the hot hand? I know I don’t want Niemi playing 70+ games this year.

Niemi is struggling?

Granted he didn’t get a preseason to “tune up”, but he’s still 4-2 this year…and the 2 goals against Pitt weren’t even really soft goals, one goes in after an inexplicable turnover and his defense failing to clear the zone after he loses his stick (his own fault, granted). The second goes in off his own player. He only got pulled because, as TMac said, he can’t pull the whole team.

The Sharks played an AWFUL 1st period against Pitt, but I think Niemi is clearly being held out as the scapegoat.

The pre-game ceremony for Thornton’s 1000 games/700 assists probably nullified the energy they got from warm-ups. The players came out to the ice, then spent about 5-10 sitting around doing nothing while the captain was lavished with gifts and Doug Wilson gave a speech. That’s got to affect the other players’ readiness for the game in some way.

Difference between 3rd line this year and last and how to remedy it

Reality is in trading Setoguchi and moving Pavelski up to the top line the Sharks significantly weakened its 3rd line. No one on the 3rd line this season is a Pavelski – not even close.

The remedy was supposed to be more offensive contributions from the defense. Boyle is scoreless season to date and that’s got to change. Season to date I see the same feisty play from him that we have come to expect but on the scores sheet his lack of goal scoring is glaring.

Burns has 3 goals which is okay but nothing spectacular…

by hit 'em on Nov 4, 2011 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

3rd line is tradtionally a checking line

They aren’t supposed to score goals… that’s just a bonus. We got spoiled last year with the Hellacopter line. This year the 3rd line seems to be more of a traditional line, with a focus on defense.

All and all, I think Handzus has been the brights spot on that line. McGinn seems to be getting better each game, too. Lots of hustle out of that guy. I love that he scored the tie last night.

Burns is 2nd in the NHL for goals among defensemen.

That’s pretty good given he has a new team, new linemates, and has to re-learn TMC’s system. I agree that the defense needs to step up (Boyle has yet to register a goal, Demers and White are struggling) but I disagree that we need to compensate for the lack of a Pavelski on the third line. Handzus, Mitchell and Mcginn job (at even strength) is to get pucks deep, finish checks, and crash the net, in other words, regain or maintain momentum. The hellacopter line last year had the same job. But they werent at all a typical third line. I don’t see another team going for a 3rd line like that of the hellacopter line of last year. The front office chose not to sign Wellwood, and instead sign Handzus because overall they wanted better defensive responsibility throughout the lineup. We need better contributions defensively so we stop leaving our goalie out to dry, not to compensate for the lack of a Pavelski on the third line.

Dan Boyle might have 0 goals

but he DOES have 7 assists, 4 of them on the Powerplay. Murray has 3 A also, putting him on pace for a record point scoring year. Burns has 3 goals (Tied for 3rd in NHL), Vlasic is always covering for Burns, and the 3rd pairing sees half the minutes of those guys, so they aren’t going to produce as much.

The defenseman doesn’t necessarily have to be the guy actually putting the puck in the net as long as they’re part of the scoring play, which they have been a great deal so far this season.

Douglas Murray actually grows them as a part of his beard…takes him a week.

"In football, I root for the Oakland Raiders because they hire castoffs, outlaws, malcontents, and f*ck -ups, they have lots of penalties, fights, and paybacks, and because Al Davis told the rest of the pig NFL owners to go get f*cked... Someday, the Raiders will be strong again, and they will dip the ball in **** and shove it down the throats of the wholesome, white, heartland teams that pray together and don't deliver late hits"

"I'll do anything to score a touchdown. And I'm not afraid like some people, their afraid to call those plays. I'm not. That's the way I like to live my life, I like to live on the edge. And that's the way it is, and that's the way it's gon' be."
