Heading into this year many expected the Kings and Sharks to be front-runners for the Pacific Division title. Looking at their rosters it was easy to see why-- Los Angeles added needed scoring pop up front when they acquired two-way centerman Mike Richards from the Flyers and smooth-shooting Simon Gagne from free agency, while San Jose added a number two defenseman in Brent Burns and speedy winger Martin Havlat to go along with their depth acquisitions of Colin White, Jim Vandermeer, and former King Michal Handzus.

Twelve games into the season however, and both teams have already dealt with some minor bumps in the road.

San Jose got off to a rocky start, dropping three out of their first four games before embarking on a wildly successful six game road trip. By and large they've managed to right the ship, but needing a comeback win to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday and a blown third period lead against the Nashville Predators on Saturday have raised questions on whether or not the team is looking to sign a sponsorship deal with CBS' 60 Minutes.

The Kings on the other hand have followed a different approach-- a wildly successful start to the season, which included a three game shutout streak by goaltender Jonathan Quick, has since turned sour. Los Angeles is 1-3-2 in their last six games and has only scored more than two goals only once in that span. It's not exactly foreign territory for the Kings, who were 25th in the goals for category during 2010-2011, but for a team this deep it is something that has provided a bit of early season hand-wringing.

It all comes to a head tonight in their first meeting of the season, a rematch from last year's tightly contested six game playoff series that ended with a Joe Thornton overtime goal. With both teams looking to find a moment where everything comes together, tonight should give both the Sharks and the Kings an opportunity to make a statement in a big way.

Star-divide

For San Jose, getting better goaltending from Antti Niemi will be the key tonight. Although he has been a bit better than his .892 SV% would indicate, there is no doubt this is not what San Jose expected when they locked him up to a four-year deal last season. Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan is a firm believer in the idea that Niemi gets better the more games he plays, meaning that Thomas Greiss won't be given too many opportunities outside of back to back situations in the coming weeks despite turning in a .928 SV% on the year. Ipso facto, Niemi needs to be better lest the Sharks let points slip away. It's either that or transition into giving Greiss more starts, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards at this stage.

As for line combinations, David Pollak of Working The Corners is reporting that Couture-Thornton-Pavelski remained together while Martin Havlat got bumped up the second line to play alongside Clowe and Marleau during yesterday's practice-- Mitchell joined McGinn and Handzus on San Jose's third line. I would have liked to see more out of Havlat-McGinn-Handzus against Los Angeles, as it's a line that gives San Jose their most realistic shot at making the third line a legitimate scoring threat night in night out, but it's understandably tough to take away your second best playmaker (Havlat) out of your top-six.

Los Angeles has a lot of depth down the center with Kopitar, Richards, and Stoll all logging big minutes in every game situation. Coupled with their defensive depth, tonight should be one of the more exciting games of November-- these two teams match up extremely well at every single position on the ice.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by McGinn, Couture, Boyle, and Pavelski. Michal Handzus backchecks like a bat out of hell during his first shift before realizing he's leading the Kings rush towards Niemi. It's awkward.

I promise to stay the hell away from the Tank tonight.

I have seen three losses by the Sharks live. Two of them were to the Kings and both were fugly. Hopefully, me staying far away will reverse the mojo on that one.

saw the pens v kings game sat night

kings offense looked pretty sharp and Fleury was a big part of that game staying so tight. Quick was equally strong at the other end of the ice. Kings may not be winning as of late, but they showed they’re not an easy win. Should be a good game

Quick's SV%/GAA is pretty sick right now.

Quick: .941 / 1.68 (GP:11)

Compared to Niemi: .892 / 3.09 (GP: 8) *

Or Greiss: .928 / 1.99 (GP: 5)

*Keep in mind Niemi’s GAA is skewed somewhat by the pull from the Penguins game.

Also, the GAA

is calculated per 60 minutes of play, not by games played in. So it isn’t skewed.

(Goals against) / TOI * 60

definitely skews the numbers.

Unless you really think Nemo would have allowed another 58 goals that game. ;-)

Knew it was something like that.

I still don’t think they’re skewed, as they are actual numbers. Nemo’s GAA on the stats are now under 3.
The avg goals per game played stat (regardless of time) was requested, and now inserted, into the Sharkstistics, as an alternative view to the NHL’s GAA.

It skews based on the pull because the denominator is a lot smaller than it would be had he been allowed to finnish (sic.) the game.

If he lost, say, 3 more shots vs. Pitt, the GAA would still decrease compared to being pulled in the first 2 minutes with 2 goals allowed.

Think of it instead as:

(((GAgame1/TOIgame1)(GAgame2/TOIgame2)…+(TOIgamen/TOIgamen)) / n) * 60

As this let’s you see the individual contribution of a particular game to the GAA, or, better yet, look at GAA prior to that game vs. GAA after that game. That’s probably the easiest ;-)

BEAT LA!

Well, TMac seems like a smart guy so I won’t give him that bad of a time if he starts Niemi again. But I will say, if it were me, I’d be going 50/50 until Nemo gets his act together. Niemi is just not an early season goaltender. But that’s just my opinion.

Hoping tonight’s a blow out… we need it. Most of our games except for Phoenix have been very close and it’s time we show our dominance.

Sharks win 3-1… goals by Boyle, Pavelski, and Mitchell.

Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...

Niemi needs to get some goal support tonight. It’s obvious he isn’t in “the zone” just yet, but it’s clear that he’s capable of being a very good goalie. Until he find his game, though, it’s up to the team in front of him to be disciplined.

In that sense, it’s almost good that Nemo’s struggling. Clearly, the guys in front of him have not been doing a good enough job of bailing him out. It just seems like the entire team has to get their shit together. Tonight’s a good time to start.

Hoping to see a few more players poking on the offensive weak side of play tonight.

When we played the Preds it seemed pretty obvious that both teams were crowding strong side at the expense of weak side opportunities. A lot of that probably had to do with Rinne dictating our offensive play, but there were some good looks had we had a man over there.

That, and I hope the ice condition ar better. Like I said in the other thread, blades were cutting more snow at the Tank than at an Amy Weinhouse concert Saturday. Ice looked like it was really soft, based on all the broken edges.

I really wish Greiss was playing tonight.

LA is a super important game for divisional purposes…and getting off to the right start against them could help set the tone for the season. Or not. Either way, I’d think you’d want the hot hand in there. But I’ve been ranting about this all season. If a .896 vs. .928 SV% and a 3.02 vs. 1.99 GAA disparity won’t prove to McLellan that Greiss is our most talented goaltender and should be starting, nothing will. So, we’re stuck with Niemi. Hopefully the Sharks can overcome this tonight and get a win.

Luckily for the Sharks, and for Niemi, LA is bad at scoring goals…per usual. So maybe the Sharks will only need 4 or so to win tonight. Doable. We seem to do well against Quick most of the time.

Let’s call a Pavelski hat trick tonight…and one from Desjardins (in the 1st, when he’s actually allowed to be on the ice)…and a Sharks 4-3 victory.

Sharks have an habit

of playing the money instead of playing the hotter hand. This seems contrary to “doing what you need to win”. Other teams keep starting their backup goalie if he’s on an hot streak. But, well, you know…

Couldn’t have said it any better!

One thing people should really keep in mind is that Niemi missed ALL of training camp plus the first part of the regular season…training camp is very important to a goaltender, especially one that, once again, has to get used to a new defense.

He's really not

I mean, even if you buy that Greiss is the more talented goaltender, those numbers still don’t mean anything without any context.

And given that historical percentages are the only thing we can go by, it’d be surprising if these numbers hold up.

No one thought Sean Bergenheim was going to light it up this year. Why are people so confident Greiss will stay good?

That said, a reasonable argument can be made for riding the hot hand.

I was trying to figure out why people think Greiss is more talented than Nemo.
I wanted to blame it on stat myopia and judgment in a vacuum.
Then I wanted to blame it on people being anxious to think they are smarter than the coach.
But then I realized, it was a simple matter of mispronouncing words.
When people were saying “Greiss is better than Nemo, Nemo is a bust,” they were trying to say “Trade Clowe and call up Cheechoo.”
It all makes so much sense now.

Weird part is, one of them is Welwood, and he's actually doing remarkably well this season.

Yeah, Quick is a great goaltender why wouldn’t you play him? We’ll probably put 50 shots on Quick tonight and make his SV% look amazing whether we win or lose.

Excellent episode of Always Sunny, and hopefully an excellent game tonight.

Doesn’t Always Sunny air on Thursdays?

Are you talking about that old flip cup episode?

Should be a beauty of a game

I think Niemi will be fine tonight, Pavelski will be his American Hero self and Joe Thornton will blow kisses to everyone in attendance. Prediction: Sharks win 4-2.
