Dark days.
The Sharks, 2-5-1 in their last eight games, head into Colorado tonight for a dipsy doodle with the similarly struggling Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche have been in a tailspin since roaring out of the gate to start the season, and currently have dropped three divisional games in a row to the Canucks, Flames, and Oilers respectively. Coupled with the Sharks struggles as of late, you can be certain that the narrative will be as follows-- two teams, desperate for points, will put in a sixty minute effort that will make every sixty minute effort before it pale in comparison.
We've been looking for a moment that encapsulates the stoic resolve of the human spirit ever since The Shawshank Redemption was released in 1994. Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, that spirit will be born anew. As these two teams do battle on the hallowed ground that is the Pepsi Center, we will remember what it means to be alive, what it means to be vindicated, what it means to grab ahold of life, what it means escape from the steel bars of a cold and callous prison cell.
And at the end of the night, as one team triumphantly raises their arms in celebration while the dirty sewage cascades down past their eyelids, that team will be reborn. If you look closely you will be able to see tiny turds of a forsaken losing streak float on by, useless as the stoic arm of victory confidently brushes them aside. Rise my brothers! Rise! Rise! A new season awaits tonight!
Well, maybe not. Tonight is just about two points, and not much more. But it feels good to bring out the theatrics every once in awhile, especially when San Jose has been more Shakespeare tragedy than Shawshank Redemption as of late.
As we outlined on Thursday their current run hasn't been as bad as the record may indicate, but a heartbreaking weekend in the midwest has changed that tune a bit-- it isn't full fledged panic-at-the-sight-of-a-goal-against just yet, but it is getting into the territory of we-might-want-to-put-together-back-to-back-wins-at-some-point because San Jose is quickly slipping down the standings into a place they found themselves in last December-- outside of a playoff spot, in a rut, with inconsistency creeping around in their game.
Even with all their struggles the Sharks are still, almost miraculously, one of the top eight teams in the Western Conference when it comes to points percentage. They sit in sixth right now with a .593%, meaning that the games played cushion is still managing to work in their favor. That only helps if you manage to win games going forward of course, but it's quite remarkable how much help they gave themselves early in the season when they were essentially unbeatable from mid-October through late November.
What is mildly concerning however, is the type of road San Jose faces when December comes to a close. This might be too early to really talk about in a meaningful way, but I think it illustrates an important point-- tonight's game against the Avalanche, and their upcoming six game homestand that starts on Thursday, are going to be extremely important games strictly from a potential points standpoint.
Once the New Year bells ring in 2012, San Jose hits the road for what will be their toughest stretch of the season.
With nearly a 2:1 ratio on the road, including a massive swing through the East Coast and the midwest for the majority of February, San Jose's schedule takes a pretty rapid turn for the worse after this month. Now we all remember what they did in October, going 5-1-0 on a six game roadie after dropping three games in a row, so there's no telling what kind of performance they're capable of in this scenario. It could turn out to be a lot of hand-wringing over nothing.
But if I'm looking at where the Sharks are right now, still treading water and in position to stay near the top of the standings on account of games played, I'm looking at this next seven game stretch as one that could effectively determine what this Sharks roster looks like in the New Year.
Antero Niittymaki was activated off the IR yesterday and was assigned to Worcester for a conditioning assignment that will last a maximum of 14 days. Once that is complete, he will either a) be returned to San Jose and begin to count against their cap and roster limit or b) be placed on waivers in order to remain with Worcester.
As both Kevin Kurz, David Pollak, and us at Fear The Fin have mentioned, it's likely either Niittymaki or Greiss is moved in a deal to clear the roster. With teams across the League looking for goaltending help, and the Sharks currently struggling, you have to figure General Manager Doug Wilson is considering a package deal that could bring in another piece to help this club.
Again, looking ahead to January-February might be a little too bold (even by our notoriously dramatic standards). But that upcoming road heavy schedule, along with the Sharks current struggles, would probably be enough to cause Wilson to put together a deal involving a goaltender + to set his team up for 2012.
In our opinion, the Sharks have 14 days to try and change his mind.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. Every single goal is scored by Martin Havlat, who enters tonights game with one goal despite putting 60 shots on net. He must have done something horrible to the hockey gods this offseason, because shooting 1.7% from the field is just plain unfair.

I dunno… Can Havlat wait until Thursday to get the hat trick? I’ve never seen a Shark get a hat trick on home ice. OR, better yet, he gets hat tricks both nights. OR, he just gets hat tricks every game for the rest of the season and post season. I like that one best.

I think the only Sharks hat trick I’ve ever seen was Murray’s from the preseason a couple years ago.

I saw Patty's Hatty against Nashville
My first playoff game featured a hat trick. I was pretty stoked!
I also saw Pavelski’s NOT!Hattrick, which would have been his 100th career goal, but was retroactively changed.
This was also a midnight ice game, where the beer league got to play at the Tank immediately following the game, and I got to see my buddy score a hattrick, and one of us threw a hat on the ice. Good times!

Wrote Shawshank. Great comparison Mr. Plank. One of my favorite movies of all time! I think DW did everything he could to improve our team this past off-season: Got rid of Huskins, Wallin and brought in White, Vandy, and Burns. I think the D is fine (although the PK needs work) and our GAA isn’t bad at all.
As I mentioned about a month ago, I thought scoring was going to be the issue, although I could not have predicted that we’d lead the league is SOG, but produce average results in goals scored. Losing Heater and Seto is a big deal and it will continue to take some time for Havlat to gel with his new linemates. He’s bound to score eventually. Luckily we’re still in the hunt even though we’re not getting much scoring on a consistent basis from our top guys.
Lastly, I’m not too worried about this team on the road, as they seem to play well there. Also, I won’t be against a move before the deadline if it can improve our team speed and PK.
Go Sharks!!! A win tonight and then home for six straight. Havlat will score 5 goals during the next 7 games according to my Ouija Board. Pat Falloon, is that you?
The schedule doesn’t get much better after February either, as the Sharks play 17 games in March, including another 3 back-to-backs.
I hope they start to right the ship tonight, especially since I’m going on Saturday. Go Sharks!

Next 7 Games
I agree this 7 game stretch is huge! 6 of the 7 games are against teams outside of the playoff picture (right now) that are struggling. It’s a really good time for the Sharks to get their game back on track and gain some much needed confidence and points.
It’s been said about this team for quite a few years, but they will live and die with their best players…they looked fantastic through most of the game against Chicago, they now need to turn that great play into wins.
Yep
And re-establish some home ice dominance. Their record at home this year is less than stellar. Build confidence, gain momentum and rise in the standings. Sounds good to me!
And another thing
I don’t think Minny or Dallas are top flight teams in the West at the end of the season. There are at least 7 or 8 teams that are playing worse than the Sharks right now and I could see us ending up in the top 4 come playoff time.
At the very least we should win the Pacific I would hope.

I'll sort of be done with finals tonight
I’m finishing my second paper right, now then I have to proctor an exam, but I also have a 3rd paper, which I’m going to have to take an incomplete on and finish over break (hopefully) or else I’ll have it hanging over my head all of next semester. I totally mismanaged my time this semester. I’ve been out of school for a while and I didn’t remember papers taking this long before.
Oh, and on top of that I have a flight at 7 AM tomorrow and I haven’t packed or cleaned up my apartment or anything and I’m going to be gone for a month (welcome back San Jose!).
Fun stuff.

damn, both papers I wrote this semester took a helluva lot more time that I thought they would (hence taking the incomplete on the 3rd paper, which I think is going to be the most difficult, yay Christmas break!)
I dunno if I’ll be able to stream the game though. I should be back in time for the end of it (maybe). I can probably at least check the scores.

Dudes,
Hockey Gods can we get a win? I’m a Sharks fan that lives in Columbus, Oh that has season BJ tickets. You plague me with enough terrible hockey as it. The Sharks are all I have. A top line goal and a win. That’s all I’m asking for here. Help a brotha out??
Falloon be with you,
Amen.
I'm usually very pessemistic about the team in the winter
Because it’s been a while since the Sharks went on a tear in the winter to give themselves a cushion going into the SAP Open road trip.
And somehow, every year, the team seems to find a way to make the road trip define their season. I’m thinking of the year Thornton arrived, and the Sharks went from 12th to 5th, or the year Brian Campbell came, and we didn’t lose a game in regulation to end the season, or heck, last year.
It’s been fun to watch, and it’s made the Sharks one of the more consistent regular season finishers in recent memory, but the marathon that is the regular season is just a teaser for the real story, and that’s the meat grinder that is the playoffs.
So much goes into going four rounds deep in the spring. Skill, preparation, determination and a healthy dose of luck. It’s part of why I worry in the winter. This is a time to be laying a foundation, to be collecting points on homestands and practicing the things you need to be consistent, and to put in the practice time to make sure all your schemes and set plays are solid, so that you can call on these things when you need them later.
I’m damn proud of the type of finish to the season we had last year, but you think about the state of the team when they faced Vancouver: Thornton, Heatley, Clowe, Demers, all banged up. Boyle, gassed from having played heroic minutes. You wonder if picking up a win here and there earlier in the season might have allowed the team to ease up that frenetic pace just a bit and have something left to give in May.
I don’t know. It’s such a long and arduous process. These guys, who frustrate the hell out of us sometimes, put in day after day of work, and they build something each season that lasts for 100 games. It’s 95% of what they need. And in the end, so far, each year, it’s all been for naught, because anything less than the 100% just will not do.
So tonight, here’s to two points, and another brick laid in the foundation of something special waiting to be built.
GO SHARKS!

What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
Also, regarding the loss of Heatley and Setoguchi
Since our last game against Colorado on November 20th, 9 games ago:
Joe Thornton: 0G 3A -2 8PIM
Patrick Marleau: 1G 0A -2
Joe Pavelski: 1G 1A -3
Logan Couture: 3G 2A +2
Ryane Clowe: 2G 3A +3 8PIM
Martin Havlat: 0G 3A +3
Dan Boyle: 0G 2A -4 12PIM
Marty Havlat might not be getting goals, but his line is at least playing the way a second line should.
But Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski and Boyle…
There’s a reason we haven’t won very many games since we last played Colorado (which, in my opinion, was our last real good game of any merit, except maybe our beating on Andrew Raycroft).
Those four guys can not put up numbers like that for any extended period of time if the team hopes to have any success. As to whether Heatley or Setoguchi would be better fits on the roster, I think at the start of the season, any of us would be hard pressed to slot either of them ahead of any of our big 3. And yet, here we sit.
As it is most seasons with the Sharks, we go where our stars take us, and they’re not taking us anywhere worth a damn right now.
GO SHARKS!

Well, we need secondary scoring to get anywhere in the playoffs. If the top line is bottled up, the 2nd and 3rd lines need to step up. So good on McGinn for trying to do just that.
I guess the thing that concerns me about these bad streaks is, well, we can’t afford even a 2 game bad streak in a 7 game series against a tough opponent. We’ve pretty clearly shown that we will lose those series.
