Sharks win second straight with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers
The Sharks have made a habit of doing things the hard way this season, but a strong overall effort tonight was able to overcome a shorthanded goal against and another closely fought third period.
Patrick Marleau scored the power play game winner, Martin Havlat busted out of his scoring slump, and Joe Thornton potted his sixth of the year in the Sharks 3-2 win. Team defense as a whole was quite sound outside of their matchup with Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, as Antti Niemi was only forced to make 23 saves during the night.
"We need some wins. We need to get a string here going, and we realize we need to take care of our home games," Sharks Captain Joe Thornton said. "It was a good two points."
San Jose would strike first, taking advantage of a poor Edmonton Oilers line change. After gaining possession of the puck in the neutral zone the previously snake-bitten Martin Havlat would break into the zone with team slump buster Michal Handzus. Handzus played give and go with Havlat as the desperate Khabibulin tried to keep his body in front of the puck. A quick touch pass from Handzus would make those efforts moot, as Havlat cleanly received the puck and lifted it into the gaping net.
Havlat, who came into tonight with 61 shots on net but merely one goal, is the midst of one of the worst goal production runs in his career. In the past we haved called that "unsustainable", as shooting 1.6% from the field is a percentage usually reserved for defenseman. Playing with Handzus definitely hasn't hurt either; Handzus has helped Jamie McGinn reignite his scoring touch as of late, and he spoke about how the third line's chemistry has begun to turn into tangible results.
"We've been pretty good the last couple of games. I know we have another gear," Handzus said. "It's all about the chemistry. We've been talking a lot on the bench and nnow we know where everybody is going."
The Oilers would strike back late in the period however, as 21 year old Jordan Eberle gave San Jose a taste of what they will be dealing with on a regular basis next year when realignment puts Edmonton into Conference A with San Jose.
Eberle would dance around Colin White, making about three moves on his way from the right circle to the left post, and eventually slip the puck past the outstretched pad of Antti Niemi. The line of Eberle, Hall, and Nugent-Hopkins was the most consistent lines offensively for the Oilers, giving the Sharks a fair deal of trouble throughout the night.
"If you're fan of hockey [you like watching those guys play]. They're a great threesome to watch," Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan said. "They're young. They're excited to play and very gifted. If you look at that goal Eberle scored, it was just a flat-out skilled goal."
The Sharks would get an early power play in the second period, but as has been the case with their special teams as of late, the results were less than spectacular. After Havlat was unable to handle a Jason Demers drop pass at the blueline, Ryan Jones came down on a breakaway and put one short-side over Niemi's glove.
San Jose would tie the game at two later in the period after coincidental minors put the game into 4v4 play. A beautiful high cycle in the zone got the Oilers defense all sorts of discombobulated in their own end, leaving a slew of open ice in front of Khabibulin. Marc-Edouard Vlasic would connect with Joe Thornton, who slide the puck across the line for the score.
San Jose would get a power play at the end of the second period that seemed to shift the momentum of their special teams unit. Although they couldn't capitalize, they generated numerous chances and gained some valuable momentum heading into the final frame. When Theo Peckham went off for interference at the 5:59 mark, San Jose would cash in on just their third power play of December.
This time it was Patrick Marleau who did the damage, receiving a cross crease pass from Joe Pavelski that he banged in short-side. Jamie McGinn, who has begun to see more power play time, also recorded an assist on the play.
"We're trying to simplify things and get shots through and get [bodies] to the net," Marleau said. "It's nice to finally get one on the power play."
All in all it was a solid effort from San Jose, who have now won two straight games where they had to mount a comeback. This month has been a difficult one for the Sharks, but six points in their last four games is a sign that things may be turning around. Before this current homestand we stated the importance of picking up points before a road heavy schedule in January and February, and the Sharks have handled their business by going 2-0 thus far.
The injury to Havlat, who left the game in the third period with a left leg ailment, is a concern heading forward. Furthermore, the penalty kill's ability to use tonight as a stepping stone to success is something that will be born out in time-- the Sharks received a slight boost when they went to the 1-3 earlier this year, but the results slowly waned as the freshness of that implementation faded with time. Continuing to take away the pass through the box will be key, as both Colorado and Edmonton were clearly looking for that play when on the man advantage.
San Jose will have three days off before playing the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, but Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan still sees issues that his team will need to correct before feeling completely comfortable with the way things are headed.
"Again, it's a win, a lot of positive things. We overcame a sloppy power play, a shorthanded goal. We won the third period, so we'll take some real good things out of the game tonight."
"But we'll continue to work on others."

I honestly thought that PP at the end of the second period was great even if they didn’t score. Khabibulin came up huge on a couple of saves.

… the rather vocal disapproval from the crowd seemed to get the point across earlier in the second. They definitely came out better after the jeering on the short -handed goal.

So is it true that Boyle has a broken foot?
That’s not something that you can just play through is it?
I saw him limp on the ice a couple of times.

Depends on how and where it's broken.
But it would explain his inability to do things like turn quickly or hold the blueline.
I still think he shouldn’t have played on it (and I’m only using the past tense because he supposedly did, I’m not convinced he’s 100%). And if he wasn’t going to sit himself the coaches should have forced him to. If he turns a big but manageable injury into a season-ender that could be devastating.

broken foot
I wouldn’t have sat him. There are lots of small bones in the foot that could have been broken. He couldn’t have made the injury any worse. It just hurts like a son of a bitch

It dramatically negatively impacted his game, to the point that he was unable to hold the blueline or produce offensively. If an injury is so bad that it drastically reduces a player’s production or simple ability to play their role, they should be sitting until it’s healed.
And sure, normal movement isn’t going to make it worse. But what about when a guy like Theo Peckham falls on it? Or when it gets hit by a 95+ MPH Chara slapshot?

I hope not

WAS broken. Now better.
Was his explanation for his first 20 games.
Fantastic news if true
There was a stretch of games where his play was un-Boyle-like. If this means that he is going to start playing like the last three years (and he has been really good the last three games) it would be the best possible thing to happen to the Sharks.
Here's the article
He said it was broken but it’s since healed. It really does explain a lot – especially his skating issues.

I was at the game
Really impressed with the PK tonight. Shots were limited, passing lanes were jammed up and pucks were cleared. Our PP had some chances and finally cashed in during the 3rd period. Overall, I was pleased with the team’s performance tonight and expect them to build off of these last two wins! Hope Marty is ok, wouldn’t want to see him out for an extended period of time.

For the first few minutes of the second period, and then the majority of the third period, some Christmas jingle kept playing over…and over…and over again over the game audio. It was kind of maddening.

Per Brodie Brazil…. Havlat walked out of locker room with a walking stick and a pronounced LIMP.

I hope Ferriero gets the call-up
If Havlat has to miss any time at all, which seems likely with the news.
Yes, he’s only got a handful of games left before he has to pass through re-entry waivers to get back to Worcester, but he deserves to get more of a chance (9G, 11A in 20 games). And although Mitchell is working hard, someone with more offensive ability, like Ferriero, would help a lot in terms of the Sharks being able to put out three full, balanced offensive lines when everyone is healthy.

Wingels
If Havlat is out and only going to miss 1 game, Ferriero should be brought up – but if it’s going to be more than one game I’m guessing t’ll be Wingels.
But if Ferreiro plays even one game, he's stuck here.

Havlat
If he walked out of there then it’s probably nothing more than a sprained ankle. I wouldn’t expect him out more than a week. I’ve never seen that before where a player hurts himself coming off the bench

Even though they will be in our division,
That Edmonton team will be really fun to watch in the upcoming years.
Havlat and White
It was at the game (nice to see a win, hope it is the beginning of more consistency…). Havlat deserved a better fate than he got out of the game, I thought it was his best game of the season up until the freak accident that caused him to leave injured. His goal was a thing of beauty, and his loss of the puck on the power play that lead to the Oilers’ short-handed goal was the result of a questionable drop pass by Demers. He came out of the penalty box looking to atone and played hard and when he had to crawl off the ice one got a sinking feeling that he won’t be playing for a while. Hopefully it is not as serious as it looked.
Then there is White. He got schooled by Eberle on Edmonton’s first goal (I get the feeling Eberle goals are going to be on highlight reels for a long time …), and took a hit to the back of his head/neck in the second that clearly stung. By the look of things I think he too may be out for a while after injuring his wrist/hand in the 3rd. It was a rough night for him all the way around.
With Murray and Vandermeer out and a lack of speed up front already it isn’t a good time for the Sharks to be losing two more players to injury. Looks like Wingels, Ferriero and Irwin might get some playing time sooner rather than later…
Irwin
He was already sent to Worcester so I don’t think White has any kind of injury that’ll keep him out, and if he does it sounds like Vandermeer is ready to come off of IR.
Regarding that Eberle goal, he’s made many, many, many d-men look bad. I think White has been playing much better lately.
Agreed re: Eberle
Yes the kid has game… I remember his first NHL goal, it was a sign of things to come.
Re: White, it may not be as bad as it looked but he was in obvious distress leaving the ice and on the bench before leaving for the locker room. I would be surprised if he was back in the line-up for the next game.
Agreed on White, I thought it was his best game in a while.

Based on what Remenda said...
Havlat may have hyperextended his knee.
Hopefully its a mild case, as it means he’ll only be out 2-4 weeks.
A bad case would require surgery and he’ll be gone for 6-9 months.

It's more of a "What have you done for me lately?" type of issue
Of course all players, even the best of them, hit slumps. It just becomes incredibly frustrating when all your best players are slumping at the same time.
Now, that also means it’s hard to single out specific guys for abuse…which is probably part of the reason for more fans calling for the heads of the coaching staff than usual.

I can't remember
who the guest announcer was during the last Chi game (after or before D. Murray), but I liked what he had to say about the team. If they just concentrate on a north/south game and not get caught up in trying to play a east/west game (I think just stay away from it in the neutral zone or just after the blue line), the Sharks are one of the toughest teams to beat. When they use their size and play a physical game to speed up or slow down the game.
And I don’t remember what Suter it was that Drew talked to that game but he jokingly or not (I don’t care) said that he thought DW should sign R. Suter. I’ve said it before, happy in NSH or not DW needs to try to make this happen. Not that I want to see Boyle go, but he could trade him next year for the space.

I believe that was former Blue Kelly Chase in the 3rd period of the Hawks game. I’ve been thinking the same thing lately—the Sharks really need to work on getting more speed through the neutral zone, finding a way to get some more odd-man rushes.
On Saturday, during the Preds-Blues game, Terry Crisp was talking about how it was imperative that the Predators get their north/south game working to beat the trap of the Blues. We’ve seen how the Sharks struggled mightily against the Blues, and I think this actually has a lot to do with it. (Admittedly the Predators scored one goal in 65 minutes, so they didn’t have much success themselves, but the point is still relevant.)
They may not always work out, but I like how Justin Braun has lately been attempting a lot of stretch passes from his own blue line, trying to create some kind of break-out for the Sharks. The team needs to do something to generate more of a transition game consistently.

Suter
That was Gary Suter they were talking to, he loves the Sharks org. But, you should probably come to terms with the fact that Suter won’t likely be a Shark. As much as everyone (including me) would LOVE to have him, the Sharks won’t offer him a big money long term contract – if he even gets to UFA.
I’m sure there’s at least a few teams that’ll throw $7mil or more at him on a long term deal and the Sharks just don’t offer contracts like that. Before Burns’ 5 year deal I think the Michalek was the last player to sign a deal longer than 4 years. So, unless Suter wants to sign with the Sharks, Wilson won’t win a bidding war for him.
Yeah
I can’t see Wilson offering more then 6. But for a short term deal to maybe have a chance at winning a cup and live in Cali, I still hope.
