According to Mark Emmons Twitter account, the San Jose Sharks will be without Martin Havlat for Wednesday night's game against Tampa Bay.

Todd McLellan told the assembled reporters today that Havlat would miss at least two games, while GM Doug Wilson said he expected it to be "an extended period of time."

Havlat injured his left leg while coming over the boards during Saturday's 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. He was seen leaving the building with a walking stick.

There is no official medical update that details the exact injury he experienced.

In his stead will be Benn Ferriero, who has been recalled from the Worcester Sharks. Fans in San Jose should be no stranger to Ferriero's game, as he has played 69 regular seasona and playoff games with the big club over the course of the his career.

According to our calculations via CapGeek, Benn Ferriero has only one game remaining before he has to pass through waivers to go to and from Worcester. In other words, if he plays one more game, he would either remain in San Jose or have to pass through waivers to be demoted.

Ferriero skated on the top line with Thornton and Pavelski at today's practice.

Think Ferriero is getting an extended stay to highlight him in possible trades in January?

Not really

I think Ferriero was brought up because he is the best fit for a top 6 role and I think he’s going to have a really good opportunity to prove he belongs in the NHL.

If he can find some consistency in his game and contribute some on the score sheet it’ll give the Sharks some options when Havlat comes back.

I envision our future third line with Ferriero and McGinn each accumulating ~40 points a season.

Benn Ferriero

He’s our leading scorer in the AHL despite missing 6 games, and he’s come through in a couple of clutch situations before when playing with the big club. His overtime goal against Detroit in Game 1 last year, on his birthday no less, definitely should prove a bit of his worth. Defensively, he’s not too shabby, either. The biggest problem is his size. He’s not a roster player regularly because we like to have bigger guys in our 3rd and 4th lines, Torrey Mitchell being the exception, and because we wanted him to develop better offensively. Ferriero also isn’t a stranger to dropping the gloves, which is good because he doesn’t let other players knock him around because he’s smaller.

In the past, he’s played well with Clowe and Couture, so it’s interesting that he’s up on the first line with Jumbo and Pavs. It gives Jumbo another right-handed shot to play with, and that could work out well. As much as I dislike the thought of Marty being out long-term, Ferriero isn’t anything to panic over.

And since I wrote this, I jinxed it and he’ll be -347 for the night.

Which makes him cool.

Hopefully he can help put together a streak. It would be nice to end 2011 on a 6 game win streak.

Well, I hate to say it...

… But I already predicted all of this before the season began. Anyone that has followed Havlat or heard of him knows that he is injury prone. Whether he’s made of glass or just has bad luck, he will not give you a full season.

Also, like I figured, I knew this speed and great defensive-forward crap some people were feeding Sharks fans was just that- crap. Havlat is a good player, I won’t take that away from him, so please don’t go all Havlat crazy on me now. There’s a reason no one in Minnesota was sad to see him leave though.

Yeah I’m being a downer/hater. I usually am not but hey, there’s a beginning for everything. LOL!

He averaged like 77 games the last three years.

This is the first year since 07-08 that he will miss an extensive amount of the season.

Yeah and it was a freak injury that had nothing to do with his previous injuries.

by Khaaz on Dec 20, 2011 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

I genuinely do like Havlat. That being said, he hasn’t done much so far this season. There’s time yet to prove everyone wrong though.

And I don’t take too much stock in Minnesota fans being happy to see Havlat and Burns go. They needed a change there, and losing those two guys were part of that change. Many here on FTF were happy to see Heater to go; doesn’t exactly mean that the player is no good. It just means that he didn’t work out for the team…

NO ONE

Was “Happy” Burns left. Burns is one of the most beloved players in Minnesota’s short history.

That said, most of the serious fans realized the Wild needed talent and weren’t going to extend him so they got what they could in Seto, Coyle and the pick that turned into Zach Phillips.

I think the defensive part of his game has been his only bright spot this season, no clue why you are stating otherwise.

He is a very smart player, always in the right position. I think his offensive game will show through eventually.

Since this means the end of Ferriero's

ability to be sent to the AHL without going through waivers, my guess is he is traded/waived when Havlat returns for a pick/prospect in return that better fits the Sharks system. I like Ferriero, but he doesn’t have the top 6 skill, and is too undersized for a bottom 6 role on the Sharks. Time for the Sharks to send him someplace where he’ll have a shot a playing full time.

by BillytheSid on Dec 20, 2011 3:50 PM PST reply actions

The better Ferriero plays now the better the return we’ll get from him.

Ferriero and Mike Moore for soon-to-be UFA Shane Doan? Yes plz.

Or maybe Minnesota wants another Sharks forward. I wouldn’t mind me some Cal Clutterbuck.

Not happening (Clutterbuck).

They said during the last Sharks/Wild game that Clutterbuck is the highest selling jersey over there. They absolutely love him.

by SanFranciscoKnights on Dec 20, 2011 7:19 PM PST up reply actions

I really must disagree. I believe he has the top 6 capabilities, and his problem was one of consistency. He was sent back to the AHL before because he is a scorer, not a grinder, so there was no real fit for him in the bottom 6 where that role is highlighted. His game is not a physical one like what you see out of the 4th line nor a protection line like from the 3rd. There is a reason he’s played so many games at the NHL level, and he was pushed out simply because there were better options for the role that he fills.

With Tmac for whatever reason reluctant to put Havlat on the Thornton/Pavelski line, and Mitchell not working out there, I can see Ferriero doing reasonably well, as well as possibly well on the 3rd line with a recently reinvigorated McGinn/Zues combo providing the board coverage.

Honestly I think Mitchell is the odd man out because he just seems to be scrambly all over, and is being bounced throughout the lines and not really impacting any of them.

by VVhirlwind on Dec 20, 2011 4:29 PM PST up reply actions

I think the issue with Havlat not playing with Thornton was one of redundancy. Both pass-first players, sometimes so much so that it could cause real problems for the “scoring” member of that line. (But I like the idea of maybe forcing both Havlat and Thornton to think shot first.)

I don’t really see a problem with how Ferriero was playing as a 3rd-liner earlier this year for the Sharks. If it’s between him and Mitchell, all you’re losing is a little bit of speed, certainly not size, and Mitchell could work just fine on the 4th line. I thought Ferriero was pretty strong defensively in his first run this season—he seemed (to the detriment of his offense, possibly) to be really aware defensively.

Yes, that's what I really liked about Benn as well.

Just an all-around solid player. Real intelligent defensively and he has upside. And he always plays his heart out.

Which of our top 6 is Ferriero better than?

Jumbo, Pavs, Marleau, Couture, Clowe, Havlat…Ferriero? Just doesnt fit. I didn’t mean to say Ferriero isn’t possibly a top 6 SOMEWHERE. Just that he isn’t one in San Jose.

by BillytheSid on Dec 20, 2011 6:59 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

With Havlat on the shelf?

Ferriero is better as a top 6 guy than Torrey Mitchell. Not a terribly high bar to get over.

And since we have no idea how long Havlat is gone, he’s got a shot at proving he can be better than someone currently in the top 6. Hopefully, he chooses to raise his game accordingly.

Doesn't need to be a top six guy.

We could use some scoring pop on the third line.

I hope McGinn stays on the first or second lines...

Really think he’d be a 25 goal scorer, 40-50 point dude at best if he reaches is potential.
But anyways, for the tampa game, we won’t see Lecavalier or Roloson. You see, there was a blackout recently at the mall in tampa, and Lecavalier and Roloson were stuck on the escalators for 48 hours…
okay, that was a fail of a joke.
But McGinn>Ferriero IMO

You're 1/2 right...

The Sharks won’t likely be facing Roloson tomorrow…

It would be a mistake to separate McGinn & Handzus right now, they’ve developed very good chemistry and are playing really well.

I guess I'm gladd Ferriero will get some extended time with the big club

And hopefully, he rediscovers his chemistry with Cloweture, but Ferriero doesn’t kill penalties if memory serves. I’m glad to have his skill in the top 6, but our atrocious shorthanded unit is short another player…

If he can finally transition that to the NHL, then he’ll definitely be making a very good case to stay.

I was really upset when they let him go – thought it was a bs move. However a few weeks later we picked up Hossa. Sometimes i guess managemnet knows what they are doing.
