Raw ChargeThe Bolts Report |
Down a top six forward in Martin Havlat, the San Jose Sharks will attempt to do what they haven't been able to in quite awhile-- string together their third win a row. It's been nearly a month (November 23rd) since San Jose last accomplished that feat, meaning that tonight provides an opportunity for the Sharks to build on their last two victories and continue what has been a strong beginning to their six game homestand.
Initially I was going to take some time today to talk about the penalty kill, tying together Tampa Bay's 1-3 offense with San Jose's experiment with the 1-3 on the PK, but I think ElvisVF101 did an excellent job of analyzing the unit's weaknesses here. While I disagree with his assertion that San Jose is in danger of missing the playoffs if they don't get their shorthanded act together, his goal by goal breakdown of their efforts thus far is frighteningly dead-on.
By and large the team has been dreadful in this category for the entire year, and it's either going to take some extremely hard work and/or an upgrade via trade to make things workable going forward. At this point I'm leaning towards a trade being the only legitimate way to improve the PK, but as has been the case this season, that move doesn't need to come until all the chips are in place. It has been exactly ten days since Antero Niittymaki was sent down to Worcester on a conditioning assignment, and while there's no telling when Doug Wilson will make his eventual move, I'm thinking a move closely following the roster freeze (which ends at midnight on December 27th) is a significant possibility.
We've been wrong (oh lord have we been wrong) before of course, so don't take that as gospel. But the likelihood of San Jose carrying three goaltenders on their NHL roster for a significant amount of time seems unlikely.
Tampa Bay enters tonight in a very similar situation as San Jose. Both were teams that entered the season with high expectations, and both have struggled immensely during the month of December. The Lightning have gone 3-5-0 this month, with a two-game winning streak heading into tonight slightly dulling the pain.
What has been different is that Tampa Bay has been absolutely brutalized when it comes to the performance from their goaltenders. The Lightning have received sub-standard goaltender from both current starter Mathieu Garon (.905 SV%) and former starter Dwayne Roloson (.882 SV%) this season, which has led to a lot of their issues.
Having said that (and fully acknowledging that Roloson is unlikely to start tonight), a part of me still thinks back to all of the times Roloson has come into HP Pavilion and thrown the Sharks for a loop. Ever since his magnificent series with Edmonton in 2006 he's seemed to have the Sharks number every time he starts between the pipes for the opposing team. If I'm Guy Boucher I'd give Roloson the keys to the car no question, but that decision probably proves more than any other why I'm sitting at home in my underwear and he's coming off an Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
At any rate, another big one for the Sharks tonight. I liked their effort against Edmonton as a whole on Saturday night-- it's just a matter of cleaning up the small mistakes (which have seemed to consistently end up in the back of the net all season) as the Sharks try to climb the standings and get back to being the team they believe they can be.
Prediction: Sharks win 5-1 if Garon starts, lose 2-1 if Roloson starts. No matter which goaltender is in net they put up 47 shots and McGinn scores all the goals.

So does McGinn read FTF or something?
You guys sorta called him out in the season previews and he’s really responded.

All this trade talk has me wondering
Just when was the last time DW made a move involving players that we thought would be involved? Pretty much every trade I can think of right now involved players we didn’t think would be going, for players we didn’t know were on the market. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Sharks’ trades it’s that DW is an enigma, wrapped inside a mystery, covered in secret sauce. I’d be surprised if he made a move that any of us saw coming.

Essentially, what you’re saying is: “Let’s stop predicting trades… because if we do, he wont do them.”?
Sounds good.

The speculation, the rosterbation… I’m just saying we shouldn’t take ourselves so seriously. Some folks have a tendency to get so worked up about the “perfect” trade and convince themselves that it’ll happen, then Doug comes out of nowhere with something else. I’m just saying be open minded and let the bronze genius work in his mysterious ways.

Trades
I don’t think Wilson is going to make a move before a) they see how Ferriero does with this recall, b) figure out how long Havalt is actually out.. It wouldn’t surpries me at all to see them carry 3 goalies for a couple of weeks and get Niitty into some games – DW / McLellan may even want to keep Niitty instead of Greiss (I think that would be a mistake)…who knows!
Wilson rarely does what anyone thinks he’s going to do and he actually has several pieces he can move depending on who it is he’s targeting. If Havlat is going to be out long term he may want to target a real 2nd liner instead of a t2nd / 3rd line weener.

Roloson
He’s finally showing his age…I still have nightmares about the save he made on Cheechoo!
I still don’t think a trade will fix the PK, that’s going to take the entire team committing to the system and actually outworking the other team.
Looking forward to seeing how Ferriero does, he’s usually really good in his first game after being called up.
Ferriero AND Braun...in the SAME GAME?!?!?!
Oh man, I might lose it! The Sharks giving their talented kids an NHL look…so odd. Braun has proven he belongs here…Ferriero has too in the past…hopefully he continues to do so this time around.
Man, if Greiss was starting tonight, I’d die from excitement. Alas, I’m not nearly that lucky.
Go Sharks!

Roloson...
Guy has been the biggest dissapointment on my fantasy team so far this season. And there are NO goaltenders that are better available and that’s saying something. LOL!
I’ll be at the game tonight… no St. Louis tonight (a guy also on my fantasy team) since he hasn’t been activated from IR yet and TB is struggling big time. I say SHARKS win 4-2. Goals by Pavelski, McGinn, Mitchell (in the last minute of the 2nd period), and Vlasic.

St. Louis
He’s also on mine, but I’d be worried about Stamkos. Even without Marty, Stamkos has been producing at (maybe even a little better) the same pace. Stammer’s also on my team too…don’t know how that happened.

Roloson, Turko, Brodeur (and I'd argue Nitty) are proving that goalies have a definite "best before" date.
Once a goalie gets beyond 36 or so it’s tough to stay flexible enough to avoid injury and not have slowed reactions.

I don’t know if I agree with your hypothesis. Thomas won the Vezina and Conn Smythe on the wrong side of 36. Nitty is only 31. Roloson was over 40 and was amazing last year.

The problem with Nitty...
… is finding someone that wants him. To put it brutally, he’s near the end of his career, injury prone, and didn’t have a great reputation coming here. Most of his rep is based on a few streaks of brilliance, which frankly any goalie can have.
I doubt very much that a trade with him as the bargaining chip will lead to any guy coming in here that can help on the PK.
The big problem we have is that the guys that were supposed to improve our PK (I’m looking at you Handzus…) have been no-shows, and the team has had to go back to what they were doing last year; putting the first liners out on the PK, and wearing them out, thus killing the offense.
First rule of trades: Ya gotta give to get. The question is who will we give up.
Considering Nitty is only 31, I’d hardly say he’s near the end of his career unless this groin injury just can’t get better.
That said, I don’t disagree that it’ll be hard to find a trade partner for either of our backup goaltenders. Unless it’s a more complicated move—with more parts going—I don’t know how much we could expect in return for these guys.

Since Greiss doesn't get much burn,
Do you think he will be traded when Nitty comes back? Do we trade Nitty or just keep 3 goaltenders?
by SharkKings49 on Dec 21, 2011 1:48 PM PST up reply actions
Niitty’s most recent problem (and surgery) were hip related, not groin.
But I agree, I don’t think the Sharks would get more than a late draft pick for Niitty, probably the same for Greiss. One of them will have to be moved in a package with a pick and / or prospect to get an actual player in return.
That’s right. There were some reports calling it a groin. This is all the Sharks’ fault for being so vague about injuries!
Maybe it’ll be like what happened to Tim Thomas, how he came back with a robo-hip or something after his surgery two years back. I guess some have said his surgery is a considerable factor in how great he’s been these past two years.
Maybe it’s time to start the Keep Niitty bandwagon.
Winter. Time to eat fat and watch hockey. -- Margaret Atwood
He was fantastic in his two starts in Worcester and I would think he’ll get at least 1, probably 2 more games this week.
He (the Sharks) said that the surgery should completely get rid of the pain he’s had for the last 2 years or so, so I’m with you on hoping for a Thomas-like return!
I still think Niitty is the better goalie between he and Greiss, but since Greiss is 25 and cheap and signed for another year I’d lean towards hanging on to him, but, this team is in win now mode so if they think Niitty gives them a better chance they’ll keep him.
The real problem isn’t finding someone that wants him. I have no doubt that teams with goaltending trouble like Columbus, New Jersey, Toronto, etc would be interested. The problem is finding pieces that would help us from those other teams.
The OP highlights a seemingly large misconception that one guy is going to change an entire unit. A strong scorer can change the dynamic of an offensive line and jump start production etc, but the PK is done by the unit as a whole. By the system. Getting Handzus was helpful to the PK unit, but the one guy out of 4 cannot prevent everything if the goals are a result of other people out of position, making poor decisions, etc.
A goalie trade is likely going to happen simply because of the wealth of goalies in the SJ system, there is little sense in dropping the cap space and/or money itself on people just sitting.
If a trade happens that helps, it will likely more be because of a mental shakeup than the single person coming in to “revolutionize” the PK. Very few PKers are out the whole 2 minutes, if they were then I could buy the argument that one guy could change everything, but if you get that one guy and then they score when his shift is over, did it change anything?
I'm lovin' the McGinn love.
I told you so.
