Offense rises - Sharks score seven against Lightning
With the recent improvement in the play of special teams and its offense, San Jose Sharks wanted to continue to build its confidence and success. This they did just fine tonight, as strong play by the offense and nearly perfect performance by the special teams propelled the Sharks past Tampa Bay Lightning in 7-2 win.
The game was pretty much over just 15 minutes into it.
Fresh off the plane from East Coast, Worcester Sharks callup Benn Ferriero found himself on the top line next to Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski. It took Ferriero just 3:26 to open the scoring in the game, on a pass from Joe Thornton. Much like Wayne Gretzky would, Thornton was with the puck behind the net, waiting for that perfect moment when his line-mate was going to open. When Ferriero did, Thornton sent him the puck, and it was in the net just a moment later.
Less than a minute after, the Sharks went on a power play. Brent Burns shot the puck on goal, Garon came up with a save, but the rebound fell right to the stick of Joe Pavelski. Sharks' forward shot it into the net with his backhand. to score 14th goal of the season.
Shark attack didn't stop there. Andrew Desjardins got on the scoreboard next. Sharks forward was rewarded for a strong fore-check by him and Andrew Murray. Murray took over the puck in the Lightning zone, and passed it to Desjardins. Garon protected the corner of the goal, but left his 5-hole wide open, with Desjardins seeing the opening and firing the puck there. Garon's night of work was over just 6:21 into the game, as Lightning replaced him with the Sharks old pal Dwayne Roloson.
Roloson terrorized the Sharks for many years, but he did not have the best start to his game either. Sharks' Logan Couture scored two more goals in the first period to welcome Roloson into the game. After just 14:41 , the scoreboard showed 5-0 to the Sharks.
With the big lead, the Sharks could have relaxed and took the rest of the night off. But they chose not too, and it was only an improved play by Dwayne Roloson that have kept the Sharks in bay.
No goals were scored in the second period, but the Sharks continued to put the pressure on the Lightning and they out-shot them 19-15.
In the third period, the one-sided game continued. Sharks recorded 11 more shots against just 4 by the Lightning. Two more Sharks scored goals in the game. First it was Brent Burns with a cannon of a shot from the blue line, after Michael Hanzus won the faceoff. It was then Patrick Marleau with his 13th goal of the season. He was the last Shark to touch the puck before it went off into the net after some confusion by the Lightning players in front of Roloson.
Besides the offense, it was Sharks' special teams who had one of the best nights of the season so far. Sharks' PK went 5-for-5 in killing penalties, while power play scored twice on four attempts.
Final score showed 7-2 in favor of the Sharks, with 43-24 shot advantage. Six different Sharks scored goals, with total of 11 players recording at least a point in the game.
After struggling to score goals in the first half of December, the Sharks scored 18 goals in the last four games. The fact that San Jose Sharks never gave up playing hard after taking a quick 5-0 lead into the game is a sign of a hungry team. It's fair to say, the team battled for all 60 minutes.
With tough road schedule in January and February, this six game home stand is turning out to be a good time to build points for the Sharks. The team has three more games remaining at home before the next road trip, with LA Kings in town on Friday.

Sharks Had scored 3 goals
By the time I finished my hot dog.
What a game today but on the whole sad news today as Havlet will miss 8 weeks. IMO if you sustain an injury that will last 2 months while making a LINE CHANGE (yes, as in he hurt himself getting out of the game), you should probably retire

Actually he was just coming onto the ice. Still crazy unlucky.
But hell, didn’t Dan Boyle tear a tendon in his wrist a few years back (while on TB) when a skate fell from his locker?
Well, Havlat will be back and hopefully clicking at 100% by April. Maybe in a weird way this will be a blessing in disguise. If Ferriero can prove he can play on the top two lines, the Sharks could have that third line of Havlat-Handzus-McGinn, which ain’t too shabby.

I do like the opportunity this brings to the younger players on the team. I don’t think his absence really hurts us that much. In fact having him out there kind of felt like a burden at times since we were having such a tough time figuring out where to put him. I’m more just upset that we gave up Heatley for him. I was a fan of the trade but admitted that the one con of Havlet was his injury-proneness; and sure enough…

Whenever I get upset about the Heatlat trade I think about the Burns and Couture extensions.
Also it’s guaranteed that Havlat performs better in the playoffs; it’s not like he would have to do much to match Dany’s postseason ‘performance’.

Vlasic
He’s signed through the 2012-13 season but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them sign him to an extension this summer.
Depends on how well he plays this year but my guess would be around the 4 - 4.5 million range

His injury wasn't related to any he sustained in the past—it was a freak accident.
It doesn’t have anything to do with “proneness” to injury.

I didn't used to believe in being injury prone
But over the past few years its just become impossible for me to deny it exists. Most injuries leave you more vulnerable to future injuries, people have different bone strength (drink your milk, kids), flexibility (makes it more difficult to pull muscles and tear ligaments), and coordination (makes you less clumsy).
It was a freak accident I know. But I still consider him injury prone nonetheless

Totally in love with this kid. He’s going to dominate while he’s up, I just know it…
I also love our 4th line…especially Desjardins. They bring so much energy!

I loved the little moment between old Worcester buddies Braun and Ferriero during/after the salute to the crowd—Braun coming over and the two smacking sideways into one another and having some good laughs.
It is so nice seeing these young guys really get a chance—and, best of all, take advantage. Braun’s really been given a lot of minutes lately, especially on the PK.
Yeah, young guys will make some mistakes, but like you said, Zero: ENERGY! The Sharks certainly need an infusion of that some nights.

Ferriero consistently goes to the net after making a pass
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both he, and Couture, do this so well. It’s clear why they had so much success in the AHL together. Roy Sommer is a good coach.

Here’s to that sentiment. The Sharks may not have the most stocked cupboard of prospects, but thanks to Sommer’s coaching and some thoughtful scouting and organizational patience, I think they’re getting more out of those prospects than a lot of other teams might.

Looks like you'll be getting
6-8 more weeks of your man crush. Not like that would be a bad thing, considering the dude did more in one game last night than Havlat has in his last 10. I’m excited to see what he can do with an extended period on the big boy squad.

More goals than Havlat fun
Desjardins has more goals than Havlat
Ferriero has as many goals as Havlat.
I’m also convinced if this trade hadn’t been made, Heatley would be playing on one leg, four broken fingers and a separated shoulder.
If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.
Good point
We traded one oft-injured forward on the decline for a cheaper oft-injured forward on the decline. Aside from the fact that the salary savings allows us to re-sign talented youngsters, this extended absence from Havlat will let us see how Ferrierorroeos (not sure on the spelling) will do with more time to jell with the lineup.

Ferriero
He’s been given multiple chances to gel with the line up – his problem is that he’s good for 3 or 4 games and then just hits a wall.
Maybe knowing that he’s going to be playing every game and likely getting a spot in the top 6 will allow hime to not worry about making a mistake (and being sent to Worcester) and he’ll be able to just play his game.
He’s a good player, he just needs to find some consistency.
That's the thing
He comes up and kills for a few games, then slows down, then gets sent down before he gets a chance to work out his issues. That was fine when we could afford to send him down after a week with the big boys, but now the staff and his teammates will get a chance to see how well he can play knowing he’ll be in the lineup on a consistent basis. That’s what I’m jazzed to see.
Kind of like with Braun. We would see flashes of brilliance last season and early this season, but he would get shipped down when he slowed down. Now that he’s more consistently around and in the lineup, he’s starting to show more of his worth.

I love this site.
Not saying it’s just you, and not saying it’s a bad thing. But it’s amazing how stars like Niemi, Marleau and Thornton are often villified and guys like Braun, Ferriero and Greiss are worshiped like golden gods.

Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrks Game 31
I really really really really wish I could’ve seen this game! But I’ll have to settle for the highlights.
I understand from reading the game comments that it pretty much was a full 60 minute effort by the Sharks.
Game 31 this season: Win 7-2 vs TB (3-day-off-game)
Game 31 last season: loss 2-3 at Nash
at 31 games this season: 18-10-3 / 39 pts, 93 GF – 76 GA
at 31 games last season: 15-11-5 / 35 pts, 92 GF – 90 GA
Next 10 games, games 32-41 last season: 6-4-0
Going: OTW, W, W, W, L, L, W, W, L, L
Sharks are 4-1-0 in 3+ day-off-games, with 22 GF – 11 GA
Sharks lead the Pacific, and are 2nd in the West, in the Potential Points Standings.
These and the rest of the December Sharkstistics have been updated.

Best game to be at...
Except a playoff win of course. I love blow out wins. And applaude the Sharks on a COMPLETE 60 minute effort. Couldn’t find anyone to bag on. And… the Sharks are no longer 30th on the PK. We are now 29th. It’s the little things… ;)
Glad to see Ferriero get rewarded with the first goal. He’s a solid guy- it’s too bad he never ends up sticking. I’d love to see him play top 6 minutes somewhere OTHER than with the Baby Sharks. Even if that means he plays for another team. He deserves it.

ALL HAIL THE ’LOCK. Contrary to popular belief the Almighty One was not injured, he was ordered by Gary Bettman to fake the injury in order to fool people into believing he is a mere man like the rest of us. Nice try Betts, but we know the truth.

I’m pretty hesitant about the guy now (not Stalock has wowed me much in the past). A nerve injury is pretty serious…

Welcome to the NHL, Atlanta Thrashers of Winnipeg.
Great change...
Nice to see some life in the Sharks lately; I wrote them off a few games ago as contenders, and there is still a long way to go to see if this is really something that will indicate a long-term success that will carry into the potentiality of postseason accomplishment, but it is definitely a much needed resuscitation of hopefulness.
I do not even know if I am that concerned about Havlat’s departure, seriously – what the hell did he do to even contribute to most of the victories San Jose achieved, other than a couple games where he played above average (he is getting paid to do more than play ‘above average’ every once in a while). I predicted it right from the start that he cannot and never has remained a healthy consistency for any NHL season, and this was inevitable to say the least. The way he injured himself just adds a sour comical humor around the joke that he already and aptly became.
We have been swimming these wintry depths for years, succeeding at survival by feeding only upon perennial minnows of sustenance... will we ever get to sink our great white teeth into this so-called Stanely's feast, so that we may finally slay our insatiable hunger in frenzied celebration?

Anyone going to the game tomorrow?
and ferrerio really looks like he belongs. there has to be some trade. There’s no way we can keep 3 NHL-caliber goalies and have Mitchell, Murray, and Winchester rotating constantly for the healthy scratch, if Ferrerio sticks, IMO. I imagine something will happen at the deadline.
Also, does anyone think its a good idea to try getting a second first rounder or a higher first rounder in the draft? This class is stacked, and if the Sharks can acquire one of the picks in the top 10 or 15, that would be really cool. Next Couture? :)

They won't get a 1st round pick in return
unless they give up a major piece. Trading away a bunch of role players won’t make it happen.
Never said they wouldn't.
I was thinking, however, that a role player/prospect+this year’s first to move up in the draft.
Hey, you can try something like Mitchell/Petreck/a second+a first for a higher pick. Not high as in top 5, but maybe top 10-15?
Or they could just try trading Clowe, which I’m sure not many here would be happy about
