Sharks looking good in the big picture but still need polish on the small details

Twenty two games into the season and I can't quite seem to figure out how to approach this Sharks team.

On the one hand you have a roster that is so undeniably loaded with talent that it becomes easy to overlook the bad things they have a tendency to do. The slow first periods, the inability to complete a pass in the neutral zone, the mercurial play of the first and third pairings. These things happen often but the talent on the team allows you to look past those gripes and put it in context. Look at the big picture if you will, even if those tiny pixels composing the image are warped and fuzzy.

The Sharks are good, probably even great. There is no denying that. Because if you flip all of their inadequacies on their back, belly up for the whole world to see, they're still better than just about each team they come across-- every single team in the National Hockey League undergoes the same exact type of pains on a weekly basis. I used to think nobody was perfect besides Gustavo Fring, but then he went along and played right into Walter White's hands and ended up in the morgue. Why? Because he had to do things himself. He had to be the one to see things through. He had to be perfect.

Perfection has a price-- you become invested in success, and that investment causes you to miscalculate things you would pick up on if you weren't so invested in your own success. But without investing in your own success, you can never reach perfection. If you look at the big picture too much you miss the small details that could be of the utmost importance, but if you obsess over the small details you fall into the trap of missing the big picture. It's a delicate balancing act, not just as a player but as a person who follows a specific team.

Take Thursday's night game against Montreal.

San Jose gives up a goal when David Desharnais beats the best defensive forward on the team (Joe Thornton) and passes it through the crease where Erik Cole beats the best defensive defenseman on the team (Marc-Edouard Vlasic). You look at that and say, "Damn, Thornton's a -3 tonight, what a terrible game for him" when in fact Thornton didn't really have a particularly poor game at all. He forces the puck to the outside on the first goal and watches as an out of position Antti Niemi doesn't get any help from Dan Boyle before Michael Cammalleri tips it in, and gets caught out on the ice when Joe Pavelski makes a brutal turnover high in the zone on the second goal. He was fine in the offensive zone, generated chances for his teammates, and kept plugging away like he's done all season.

And then there is how San Jose responded to Montreal's third goal that put the Sharks down 3-2 with 11:14 left in the game. Sure the game tying goal by Ryane Clowe with under two minutes left was spectacular theatre, and well-deserved considering his struggles (and that of the second line) as of late, but all in all I thought the Sharks performed horrendously in response to the goal. Montreal was clogging the neutral zone like nobody's business, the Sharks were chipping the puck in and watching it get chipped right back out, passes weren't connecting, scoring opportunities weren't there in the least-- to put it mildly, the Canadiens had that game all but wrapped up before Clowe came up big. San Jose was lucky or blessed or in the right place at the right time or whatever, and they came away with a win.

Those two examples say two important things. The big picture will say Thornton had a poor game when the small details say he actually played pretty well; concurrently, the big picture will say the Sharks gutted out a win in the dying minutes of the third when the small details show that they performed poorly in response to Montreal's third goal. Which one is more important-- the big picture, or the small details?

Star-divide

The big picture says the Sharks are a great team, top five in the League, but the small details state that they have issues that will be exposed in a seven game series against the toughest competition in the Western Conference. This isn't novel or new or groundbreaking, nor is it an issue exclusive to San Jose (watch any team and that will be made abundantly clear), but it is important in that you begin to realize just how prolonged this regular season is and how that length of time tells you some important things about how good the Sharks are but tells you very little about their eventual success in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

At its core the regular season is the big picture. It's the true indicator of how good a team actually is because it gives you so much more data to work with and irons out all of the statistical anomalies that take place on a weekly basis. The playoffs are like the week before the quarter ends at the office. The playoffs are the small details-- they show you who can elevate their game and ride that adrenaline to the promised land, but they usually can't tell you who has the most overall game in the first place. The playoffs are all about those small details.

What I'm looking for tonight is the small details. It starts with the first goal of the game, of which San Jose has only had seven this season, and ends with the Sharks sucking the life out of the Panthers by playing physical, boring, defensively-sound hockey. It's been awhile since the Sharks have had one of those truly dominating games where everything is firing on all cylinders; in a game like tonight where the stakes are low and the bad blood is minimal, there's always the threat of the energy not being there. Hey, it happens.

But when the small details have been somewhere around room temperature for the last four games, putting in a complete effort for 60 minutes is the best way to get things up to boiling again.

Prediction: Sharks win 5-2. Goals by Pavelski, Boyle, Havlat, Couture, and McGinn. Brian Campbell gets booed while everyone kind of looks around and wonders why.

On the contrary, I think the playoffs are a better measure of who has the best overall “game”, because the playoffs are all about how your team plays and how each team can adapt to counter the other team’s strategy, strengths, and weaknesses, etc.

I can’t remember the quote but I remember some coach quoting about how they would love to be able to tailor their specific play to each team they play that night, but cannot because the length and variety of the season is so broad that altering the plans (even small things that are simply consistently different) actually ends up confusing the players and making them play worse because of conflicting coordination.

That confusion isn’t in the playoffs because of the extended series, and thus while it is considered a coaching battle, it is really about how the players themselves can adapt and exploit the learned intricacies of the opposing team.

Tonight’s game is going to definitely be an interesting one, because if asked before the season about facing Florida, it would easily have been written off with a shrug and a quick quip of “They’re gonna roll those scrubs.” However Florida has put on a new face this year and is performing surprisingly well, and so this game becomes a big more serious, for the fans at least, don’t think the players write off any team except Columbus.

Why no talk about the Panthers? O:

They’re the biggest surprise of the year.

I hope this game goes to OT. I like both teams, almost equally at this point. San Jose keeps breaking my heart, and Florida’s always there to comfort me.

All I’ve ever said is that Canada should have at least one more team. They could move from Jersey or St. Louis, I wouldn’t care.

Would Phoenix moving screw with realignment?

There are already two teams in the Eastern time zone that play in the Western Conference. Unless there is another large western Canadian city wanting a team I don’t see how that would make sense.

by Briceratops on Dec 3, 2011 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

Well Winnipeg is a western-ish city...

If Phoenix moved to, say, Quebec City, or Markham, it’d only restore last year’s status quo.

But then there would still be two teams in the Eatern time zone in the Western Conference even after Detroit gets their way and moves.

Also, if you hadn't heard of Markham...

They’re building an NHL-sized arena out there. Lots of rumours floating around that the NHL has decided Toronto can’t monopolize that market anymore. So. It’s an interesting prospect.

Which one is more important-- the big picture, or the small details?

As a fan, they’re equally important in my opinion – can’t really get too caught up in one or the other.

If you pay too much attention to the small details you’ll drive yourself crazy because there will ALWAYS be something that the team isn’t doing right.

Pay too much attention to the big picture and you can overlook the teams issues and the fact that they can always be better.

NHL coaches are very good at finding the balance between the two (for themselves) and making sure the team continues to ‘progress’ in the right direction.

As for tonights game, Florida has been playing a very good team game. They have a mobile defense that’s putting up points and balanced scoring up front., add in Theodore playing really well…the Sharks will have thier hands full. It should be a fun game.

Go Sharks!

Balanced to me doesn’t mean equal…guess I should start being really specific There’s definitely a drop off from those top 3/4 but they are getting some goals from their 2nd and 3rd lines and they can still beat teams if that top line is shut down.

by milanahalek on Dec 3, 2011 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

And I just looked at their point totals…balanced wasn’t the right word. From watching them play it seemed that their 2nd & 3rd lines were contributing, which they are, but the top line has put up a lot of points.

Is that this is a damned good, damned talented, damned fine team that’s still pretty much just getting by on that. There is absolutely a next level for this team. They aren’t there yet, but it’s a long season, and come spring, they either find it, or it’s all for naught anyway.

Later this month or in early January when we get closer to the trading deadline I might write a fanpost about pending UFA forwards on struggling teams that I think would make sense to target in a trade. Or maybe I won’t. Deal with it.

Without Seto

The top 6 look a lot slower. Fortunately, Marleau at Center seems to have brought his skating back, and Havlat is staying healthy. The top 6 as a whole though, could stand to play a bit better physically. It feels as though they’re having a tough time winning one on one battles along the boards lately.

If you get Fearnet, watch Todd and the Book of Pure Evil.

It’s, in my opinion, the best show on TV right now. It’s a comedy with fantasy-like character arcs, and that alone makes it intriguing. I “get” its comedy too, unlike dry, bland shows like BBT and Arrested Development. Though Canadian comedy tends to be quite different from American comedy.

PS, I think I forgot my original argument and have been BSing for a few posts now.

But generally, I find certain shows – usually on HBO – get tons of praise for no reason. The Sopranos, Mad Men, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, shows like those. I really don’t see why they’re so highly regarded.

But now that I think about it, a lot of my favourite shows are Canadian, so. Could just be a cultural thing? Who knows.

What are your favorite shows? (other than Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, which you mentioned above)

I need more shows to watch.

The Outer Limits (the one from the 90s) is a FANTASTIC show if you like sci-fi anthology.

I like Community too, though that’s American, and it saddens me that it’s cancelled. ;-;
Picnicface is a good sketch comedy series out of Nova Scotia.
On YouTube (does it count?), a series called Newfoundlander Vs. never ceases to entertain.

I know there’s a few others, but I haven’t watched TV regularly in a couple of years now. I used to have a show I’d watch every night. Some of the better Canadian programming is coming from The Comedy Network and Space… There’ve been lots of original shows I’ve watched here and there, like Corner Gas and Comedy Inc. that were quite good, but I never really stuck with them. If you’re hunting for new shows, check out those websites. :D If you get behind a proxy (download HotSpot Shield if you don’t have one), you can even watch full episodes on those sites.

But Todd and The Outer Limits are far and away my favourite shows.

When an unfunny show is mislabeled as a comedy...

by Evil Stanchion on Dec 3, 2011 5:55 PM PST up reply actions

What that means is a show is labeled as a comedy and so people have expectations when watching it. When those expectations aren’t met, they start reacting things that they essentially imagine themselves.

Add into that laughter cues, either subtle through unnatural dialogue pauses or the decidedly unsubtle with laugh tracks, and you have the model of most american comedy television.

Imagine most of the popular comedy shows without laugh tracks extracting mob mentality laughs, and it would probably be surprisingly dull.

but tbh, I think Mad Men might possibly be the greatest TV show I’ve ever watched, at least the greatest drama.

I didn’t watch the first season until right before the second season came back and the entire thing was available onDemand. I watched the whole first season in like 2 or 3 days.
