Time to bring Jonathan Cheechoo Back!

Has anyone noticed that Jonathan Cheechoo is the leading scorer for the Worcester club with 40 points this year. Many feel his playing days in the NHL are over but this is not the case. The San Jose Sharks are on a roll now and going for their 6Th straight win Friday night against New Jersey but what are the chances of seeing old number 14 back playing at 3rd or 4Th line right wing for this team this year.  Currently, 36 year old Jamal Mayers is having a very quiet season with only 2 goals in 49 games. Wouldn't you think Cheechoo could be an upgrade to that situation. I think Cheech could provide better scoring productivity for the 3rd line.

Do the Sharks experiment with this before the playoffs? Just wanted to ask the San Jose Shark faithful to see how you  feel about this. Time to bring Cheech back!

I think there’s an unwritten rule that this topic has to be dragged up every few weeks.

Unwritten? It seems as if this rule has been carved in stone.

4 games left..

Then his 2nd PTO is up, wonder if Worcester will give him PTOs next season so 2011-12 will be chalk-full of ‘call up Cheechoo’. I can barely contain my excitment.
A question for you Cheechoo folk..
If he is so ready the NHL, why hasnt he been offered a contract from any team?
He is not signed with the Sharks

good point

as we’ve seen, there is a huge difference between the AHL and NHL. what happens if he comes up and bombs and say the guy you proposed, Jamal Mayers, is claimed off waivers? then we’re probably stuck with cheechoo. plus, we dont NEED to have big scorers on every line (although it never hurts)

by StevieV17 on Feb 10, 2011 12:39 PM PST up reply actions

plus, we don’t NEED to have big scorers on every line (although it never hurts)

Chicago and all those Detroit teams would like to have a word with you, and allow you a single sip form their Stanley Cup. Remember, it is the lower guys on the depth chart that pot the crucial goals in the playoffs more often than not.

I doubt the Sharks sign Cheechoo unless they're suddenly desperate.

With McGinn, Mitchell, Mayers, and Ferriero all theoretically fighting for a the team’s last two roster spots, we don’t really need to add a name that isn’t under contract to the mix.

And Mayers and Cheechoo serve really different roles, with Cheech being a scorer and Mayers meant to be an enforcer. If we’re going to dump Mayers, I’d rather see McGinn, Mashinter, or McLaren considered for the roster slot, given that they fit the rough and tumble, throw some punches, lay some hits mold.

Totally true. If I was gonna replace Mayers with an ex-Shark who couldnt skate it would be Scott Parker.

I actually got a good first hand look at Cheechoo last weekend.

I was out at Worcester for the game, and here is what I saw…

First, at least in my view, Cheechoo looked to be better than everyone else on the ice. He always stood out to me on the ice because the puck seemed to be following him around. He was positionally sound, he would crash the net with abandon. He had many quality chances, although none of them went in (the Bruins’ goalie was playing really well). He clearly had a better feel for the game, and a better understanding of the game, than everyone else playing that night.

But you would expect that. He had the most NHL experience, and the most high level NHL experience, of anyone on the ice that night. One thing he did not to well, though, was skate. He was not faster than anyone. He wasn’t noticably slow…but the AHL is a slower game than the NHL. If he really belongs here, then he should look like a fly buzzing around shit out there…flying so much faster than everyone else, buzzing around the ice. He was not…not even close. So while he looked better than everyone else, he could not impose his will on the other team like a true NHL-ready player would be able to do in the AHL. His body and skating just would not let him.

Cheechoo was a great part of our organization for many years…years that put us on the map as Stanley Cup contenders. And his Rocket Richard year was magical. But he was never the swiftest of foot to begin with, and now he’s lost too many steps. He’s a tweener now. He can play very well in the AHL on his game instincts alone…but he’s too slow to use those instincts at the NHL level. He’d just get left in the dust.

Damn, I’m in a library right now, but I almost LOL’d for real after reading that. I’m not in the camp that thinks he absolutely can’t make it back to the NHL, but there’s really just no spot up here with this team. Cheech’s best assets come as a top-six type scorer, which he has shown to be capable of on the AHL level. I think he could possibly crack an NHL teams roster, but why would a GM risk that in favor of giving younger players a shot instead?

Also, see my signature. I’m really only serious about Nolan though, now that Sturm was already traded and injured (again).

Bring Cheechoo up? I'm still waiting for Sturm, Friesen, Nolan, hell even Korolyuk to come back in teal. =J

Not going to happen

Bringing him back would require signing him to an NHL contract and I don’t see him as much of an upgrade from anyone on our active roster

NHL contract, plus wouldn’t he also have to go through waivers for re-entry?

Probably. But I doubt waivers would be an issue since literally anyone can sign him right now…and no one seems to want to.

Yeah waivers won’t be an issue. If we signed him he would make his way to us but we don’t have the roster space or cap space to sign him. We would need to be very depleted and have a lot of cash sitting around. Neither of which we have

cash wouldn’t be the issue. He’d sign for the minimum. Roster space is. We have too many forwards right now as it is.

I don’t know what minimum is (I’m assuming like $250K). But i’m thinking that it could make space to bump an offer sheet to a defenseman from say 1.2 mil to 1.4 mil which could help us out. Every little bit counts at this point

Except an offer sheet to a d man would come in the offseasn, when any contract Cheechoo signs would be over. It really is a non-issue. The issue is that we have enough forwards and that Cheechoo is too slow for the NHL.

No =\

Especially after reading this on WTC a few days ago:

One note on the Jonathan Cheechoo discussion going on out there. Talked with someone who has been watching Worcester play all season. Word is that Cheechoo started out well enough, but seems to have lost a step since coming back from the hit to the lower back that bruised his kidney.

by Khaaz on Feb 10, 2011 5:20 PM PST reply actions

YES

I’d definity bring back the cheech.

by Jayr DePistola on Feb 11, 2011 12:31 PM PST reply actions

I’m not sure why so many people are so concerned with Cheechoo’s skating ability. He’s always had a problem with skating. He still scored 56 goals in one season. Heatley is not much better. We don’t need everyone on the team to skate like Mitchell, who can’t score by the way, scorers who can skate or not will do just fine.

by Alaskan_ice on Feb 12, 2011 3:07 AM PST reply actions

The problem is his injuries. At the peak of his health, he was just able to sneak those shots in the first year of NHL 2.0 against competition not suited for the style of play post lockout hockey brung.

Pretty much this.

But to add a little more… He was slow when he scored 56 and that was pre-hernias. He’s lost about four steps since then. He was too slow for the Senators last year or Dallas at the start of this season, and now he’s got a bruised kidney and is a step slower than that.

I think Cheechoo would probably be fine on the PP or as the extra attacker, but at evens he’d be a liability for not being able to make it back defensively or break with the transition. Since the Sharks are struggling at even strength, Cheechoo isn’t the best fit. I love the guy, and hate that his career has come to this, but it is what it is.

Joe and Author,
Points well made. I would assume that Sommer is giving Wilson updates. It sounds like WOrcester signed him to another PTO. Good for Jonathan.
