Surging Sharks finally add defenseman, acquire Ian White from Carolina

Photo

Today, San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson finally solved an issue that has surrounded his team for the better part of the last two seasons. In two separate transactions with the Carolina Hurricanes, Doug Wilson acquired the oft-traded but talented Ian White for a second round pick in 2012 and sent Derek Joslin to Carolina for future considerations.

Pundits have long considered the Sharks top four defense below average, especially after the retirement of Rob Blake in the offseason. White addresses that need; he's a young, skilled two-way defenseman who will fit nicely into the top four spot that has been vacant for the better part of two years.

White may not have the star power or media allure of Tomas Kaberle, who was traded to Boston earlier this morning after what seemed like years on the trade block. However, White is a solid player with both offensive and defensive acumen, a player who will undoubtedly help the team compete for a playoff spot in the ultra-tight Western Conference race.

Ian White brings a myriad of offensive skill to the table. He has an excellent first pass, has a good and strong shot, and possesses a quick release with his wrist shot. He puts pucks on net, and for a Sharks team that has struggled at times on the back end due to the loss of Rob Blake's slap shot, White provides a good replacement offensively.

As we mentioned on our podcast two weeks ago, he's a player that is able to quarterback a power play, and will likely slide onto the second unit during the Sharks man advantage. White's inclusion onto the roster will allow the power play to not skip a beat without Dan Boyle, and reduces his minutes in this situation-- over the course of a game the effect will be minimal, but with Boyle's minutes so high, every little decrease will help his legs down the stretch. White can come in and play in excess of twenty minutes a night and hold his own, which instantly improves the Sharks depth and makes this acquisition an important one for San Jose.

Star-divide

Furthermore, White has a strong first pass and good skating ability. Doug Wilson has always touted those skills from a defenseman, stating that in the modern NHL a requirement is that players can skate. Although you won't see White going from the end line to opposing team's blueline as much as a player like Dan Boyle would, he instantly becomes the second best puck mover in San Jose and will help fuel the breakout.

Defensively, White is a mixed bag. He's known to commit turnovers in his own end when he attempts to stretch the play up the ice, and isn't a player who fulfills that defensive stopper role such as a Robyn Regehr or Chris Philips. His quality of competition numbers this season are down at the bottom of Carolina's depth chart, but historically, has been relied upon to see some top opposing players: in Toronto and Calgary White was handed the second hardest defensive tasks and performed well. He's definitely not the prototypical defensive defenseman that will play a rough physical game, but is more than capable in his own end and improves San Jose's defensive capabilities.

As far as pairings go, the logical fit for White would be with Marc-Edouard Vlasic on the second pairing. It allows White to showcase his offensive skills to a much greater degree, and gives Vlasic the opportunity to focus on the defensive side of the game that he has become extremely fluent in. It gives San Jose a nice 1-2 punch of adept puck movers in their top four (Boyle, White), pairs them with solid defensive counterparts (Murray, Vlasic), and puts all other defenseman on the third pairing in roles that they will be able to handle.

Because of all these qualifications, it's no surprise that Doug Wilson has been interested in acquiring White for a long time. As the trade deadline loomed, and other teams started making their moves, the Sharks General Manager decided this was the best time to strike. It wasn't a big surprise that the move remained quiet for so long, as Wilson is notorious for keeping his trade negotiations under wraps. Wilson's established working relationship with Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford likely made things easier; the two worked together on a trade for Niclas Wallin at the deadline last year. As was the case with the White deal, the Wallin transaction was also kept mostly off the radar.

The second round pick the team sacrifices in 2012 for White is no huge blow to the future of the franchise. And although you also have to consider Derek Joslin part of the package, losing the young defenseman isn't the end of the world, especially if White is eventually resigned. As a 26 year old, White still has plenty of productive seasons ahead of him. In addition, the emergence of Jason Demers and Justin Braun (and to a lesser extent Matt Irwin and Nick Petrecki) made stomaching a Joslin trade much easier.

White brings a cap hit of approximately $3.0MM with him to San Jose, which requires some roster adjustments. Jason Demers has been sent to the Sharks' ECHL affiliate in Stockton for the time being, but is likely to return to San Jose for the team's game against the slumping Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. This time of year can cause even the simplest roster move to ramp up speculation. However, we can say with confidence that the young defenseman remains a large part of San Jose's future plans. His youth, potential and affordable contract makes him too valuable to move for any type of short term solution.

Instead, these types of roster shifts (Benn Ferriero, Braun and Irwin up, Jason Demers, Nick Petrecki and Tommy Wingels down) are mostly complicated cap moves that shouldn't be parlayed into speculation of possible trades.Really, much of what the Sharks do in the near future hinges on the health of Antero Niittymaki; not only is he an important part of the roster, but his $2.0MM cap hit is substantial. A long term injury to the netminder would have some implications for the team, it's unlikely the Sharks make additional moves without considering this first. Something will happen eventually, as cap space remains tight. Still, don't read too much into any one move.

What's important right now, though, is that the Sharks are a better team on paper than they were this morning. As we mentioned above, if Marc-Edouard Vlasic is healthy enough to play Saturday (his upper body injury isn't expected to be all too serious per Working the Corners), we expect White to be his defensive partner. The combination of Boyle, Murray, Vlasic, White and Demers on the back end is a defense more fitting of a team who fancies themselves a Cup contender.

Although this acquisition is not the end-all be-all guarantee for sucess, the move better prepares the Sharks to compete for the championship which has eluded them in their twenty year history, without sacrificing their future.

Not what I was expecting from DW

but none the less very impressive. Hell has there been anything DW has done that hasn’t impressed all of us (excluded signing Huskins of course)

However it was given to a player that has not met expectations during his tenor with San Jo. So we can’t put the blame entirely on DW. Wilson can do a lot of things but predict the future is not one of them. (If so he would have never traded for Brian “Sell-out” Campbell) Hopefully White won’t follow his Carolina counter-part down the same road. Looking forward to seeing Ian in teal, definitely fits the San Jose mold.

Disagree

The expectations on Wallin were low and he has at some times exceeded them. But he’s not worth 2.5M any way you look at it.

Good move

Especially because we ended up giving them only one pick.

The goalie situation is interesting now. I guess by IR rules, Nitty could come back at anytime, and then Hutton could be sent down. Apparently Greiss can be signed after the start of March.

I wonder if there’ll be any more moves that happen. I sort of home something does, because trades are sort of interesting. I still expect it to be just reserved to a D-man or goalie, unless White was added for that precise reason.

Adding White is a fantastic move.

But I agree that Nitty is the sticking point. If placed on LTIR, he would save the Sharks $560,000 against the cap if my calculation is correct (highly unlikely). I’m not familiar with how much more room thatd leave in cap space if any. But that savings would obviously go along ways in how DW would manage the roster down the stretch.

I'm guessing we are done adding

Looks like DW has made his moves in terms of adding… White, Eager, Wellwood.

Overall, that’s a real nice haul for midseason and added some depth without losing more than a couple of picks and Joslin. Well done.

We are now out of cap space, and with White in the fold, there is no real reason to trade Setoguchi this year, especially with his game picking up as of late.

On top of the fact that Anaheim just got reamed today and as of this posting Chicago is 4 minutes away from losing again too.

Now, all we need is the next trade announcement of Mitchell and or Huskins for picks to clear the cap space for Demers to return to the lineup, and it’d be the perfect day.

A decent possibility we're done making moves yet

Puck moving defenseman: Check
Shutdown defenseman: uh-uh not yet.

I sort of thought DW added Eager and Wellwood to add offensive depth so he could move some of our forwards (Benn, Seto, etc.) for a trade. Now we are too deep at forward and could actually still make another move if we want to

ps. I love this move

Don’t we need backup goaltender?

It sounds like Nitty’s injury is pretty serious, and i really doubt the Sharks coaching staff plans on actually starting Carter Hutton. Niemi can’t continue playing every game all the way into the playoffs; he needs a break.

by Khaaz on Feb 18, 2011 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

Something has to give. We don’t have the cap space for Nitty and White, moving Joslin certainly doesn’t clear any room… and we have 8 dmen by my count (if we take DW at his word on the reason for moving Joslin)

Boyle-Murray
Vlassic-White
Demers-Braun
Huskins-Wallin
Irwin…

Now, if half of them were on IR like Montreal or Vancouver then fine… but technically, they’re all healthy, or only really a little banged up (sorry Pickles)

Maybe he wants to get a couple later picks back for Husky? Demers and Braun aren’t going anywhere, and don’t have the salary to make a difference. It has to be Huskins or Wallin…

It seems like Husky is going to be the odd man out by position and price.

Though I suppose Torrey is still an option (especially with Ferriero in town). I’m sure DW is shopping one or both as we speak to see who bites with what offers. Demers and Braun probably go on the Stockton Shuttle until DW finds the deal he wants, then we roll from there. McLellan didn’t seem to enthusiastic about Nitty’s chances of being back soon, either, so he may go LTIR in the near future.

On a side note, I bet Irwin switches with Braun tomorrow (or later tonight now that the Baby Sharks’ game is over). Worcester played tonight and if you had the option of Braun or Irwin playing while Petrecki is stuck on a plane, which would you pick?

Yep, pretty much there is still moves to make, however they aren’t moves to add pieces. The only moves left to make are dealing Wallin, Huskins, and/or Mitchell for picks to clear cap space for Demers and Braun to return. We only need to move one of the forementioned 3 because Demers’ hit isn’t much (til next year’s bump) so there should be room for both to be up at the same time.

If we can afford to keep the current roster together, I like our team going into the playoffs. Our defense is good after the White addition, and Wellwood and Eager have been genius acquisitions to add depth. We will need all those forwards come Spring

Absolutely. My concern was always in how we might fit White in, taking into account the cap, and the worry about overpayment. DW assuaged my worries in both regards. Now it’s just a matter of White fitting in well and not disturbing the chemistry our D has developed in recent weeks. (Despite that, we still need more offense from the back end, which is why I’m also glad Wilson went for more of an offensive defenseman.)

Was the overpay of Huskins/Wallin a deadline thing? Thought that was more of a we couldnt get a UFA so DW solidified them so that we weren’t left with bringing rookies up, in desperation anticipating a league that wanted vet Dmen (which didn’t happen).

I don’t think White will walk like Campbell. Remember that Campbell was a top 2 D-man with qualified success on each team he had been on. White on the otherhand has done well on some teams, underperformed on others, etc, and is billed in the middle tier. It is doubtful he’d receive a 5+ mil offer, and so with the removal of Wallin and Huskins’ salaries from the books next year,

There is plenty of room for even a 4 mil contract while having the room for Demers and whoever the 6th Dman brought up is (likely Braun). as well as the room to resign Niemi and Seto.

On top of all that, based on White’s comments of being glad to be with “one of the best teams in the league” it seems like he’d be more likely to resign with us than a team crappier than us simply due to his past history of playing for under performing teams like the Canes, Flames, Toronto, etc.

I just hope White doesn’t Brian Campbell us and go for the bigger paycheck in the off-season.

I still don’t fault Campbell for taking the money. He still went to a good team and got a Cup to boot. I wouldn’t blame White if he decided to go that route either.

That being said, maybe White is tired of moving around all the time and decide to set up shop in Norcal after season’s end for stability’s sake. =/

Beyond happy with this move.

Ian White was a guy I thought the Sharks should look at, but had no idea he would be available until recently. As stated in the articles, he’s not only going to help offensively but should be solid in his own end. I’m excited to see him play with Vlasic. Hopefully he likes it enough here and decides to re-sign.

As always

You all never fail to amaze me with your thorough analysis. Thank you. I have followed Ian White here and there and was thrilled to acquire him (he and Philips were my two hopefuls after Beauchemin went to Anaheim) but you opened up a whole new perspective on White. Well done!

Can’t wait to see what he brings tomorrow- I’ll be at his first Sharks game. Wooooo! Maybe he’ll make an appearance at the Sharks blood drive as well? Doubt it but would be cool.

Any help we can give to Boyle a little TOI rest is much needed and kudos to DW for AGAIN working magic.

I'm more than happy with White.

I was resigned to him being off the table after the Carolina trade, but here he is. For less than I expected. For potentially less than Carolina paid for him (depending on if you think Babchuk+Kostopoulos is equal to a 2nd+Sutter).

I wanted a hybrid defenseman, and White’s definitely more offensive than defensive, but he’s still mobile and pairing him with Vlasic takes the pressure off Brine Time and might allow White to push transition more than he was in Carolina. Definitely better as a partner for Vlasic than Wallin at any rate.

And it sets up nicely for Braun/Demers to take the third pairing at some point in the not too distant future, while Petrecki/Moore/Irwin build as the top pair in Worcester. Not sure what we do with Wallin/Huskins in the immediate sense, but something will come if DW puts his mind to it.

It’s funny—I remember trying to be optimistic (for once) at the time of the White deal to Carolina, thinking that in a way it might increase our chances for getting White, assuming that it might be hard to trade with Sutter, and that there was a chance Carolina would fall out of the playoff race.

It’s also quite odd to think about the Sharks having an excess, of all things, of right-handed shots on defense. If we’re able to re-sign White in the offseason, it would certainly be interesting to see how the defensive pairings might come together.

I’m also less worried about White leaving as a UFA considering the Sharks’ brass seems so high on Braun and he seems like he might be ready to slide in next year, maybe even in top-4 minutes.

It really is going to depend on how much White wants. I think he knows his value has taken a hit based on numbers this year and the fact he got traded twice. I don’t really know what the defensive UFA market is like this year.

At least this time we won’t have lost much more than a 2nd if he does walk (lets face it, Joslin no longer had a shot of a roster spot here).

There are a metric ton of defensemen this summer.

Just grabbing names off of Capgeek still listed as UFA: Lidstrom, Jovanovski, McCabe, Markov, Hamerlik, Hannan, Brewer, Kaberle, Pitkanen, Bieksa, Phillips, Salo, Wisniewski, Erhoff, Staios, Sopel, Gill, Hejda, O’Brien, Babchuk, Foote, Eminger, Salei, Bergeron, Greene, Mara, Strudwick, Hendry. And White, Wallin, and Huskins, of course. I’m sure a decent number of those guys will never hit the market, but it’s a lot. And I skipped smaller names and only went through about half the page.

Yea, I didn’t even like Joslin either. I call him Huskins Jr. He plays exactly like Huskins and is only minutely better than him simply because he’s younger so he can be faster. But he has the same lost look in his eye when he has the puck, the same poor pass making decision making abilities, etc.

We lost nothing, with the potential for everything.

Applause to D-Dubz

White is going to play a big role on our power play with his puck movement and slapper. Most likely, we will see a large increase shots to the net.

A righty with pace on his shot is going to do wonders for this team. Put him with a Lefty, you get more one-timers. Put him, with Boyle your gunna see some cheeky passing.

There is no doubt in my mind he will improve this team in all areas.

Is it too much to worry that Huskins will

a. get resigned after the season
b. make as much money as he did this season, if not more?

TMac has placed him 18+ minutes in six of the last seven games.

I guess I could ask the same questions about Wallin. He’s been out there for 16+ minutes in seven of the last eight games.

At this point, I’m ready to let both Huskins and Wallin walk away. I’d love to get a pick or two in return, but I just want their dead weight contracts untied from our necks. Those two would free up over $4M to resign White. If he’s even close to as good as everyone is saying now, the Sharks could be in a very different situation, depth-wise, next year.

Depends if they can resign white. If they can I don’t see there being room with how much they like Demers and Braun right now. Husky may have had 18+, but Demers had 28 when Vlassic went down. Murray is eating tons of minutes himself, and Vlassic is no slouch.

This offseason will be interesting

set’s contract is up and if he continurs to produce he will def earn at least 2.5. Niemi’s is up as well and he’s been so solid for us i really want him to stay. Add in white’s contract and you get another interesting cap situation

by FinAdic on Feb 18, 2011 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

He needs to really step up to earn a $2.5m or more contract

His inconsistencies over the past 2 years playing without Joe should keep him to around $2-2.25m for a 1 or 2 year deal.

by IsThisTheYear? on Feb 18, 2011 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

I'm more worried about the season after, personally.

If we give Seto 2-2.5, White another mil (so 4mil), half a mil for Neemo (2.5mil) and re-sign the other forwards (Wellwood, Eager, Mayers, Nichol) for the same price or small increases, we fit under next year’s cap before the rumored raise of 2mil. Without trading Mitchell.

The season after, we have Couture, Demers, Braun, and virtually any other AHL player we bring up to think about. Mitchell and Nitty will come off, but that might not be enough to spread between those three depending on their progression. Especially considering Clowe, Vlasic, and Murray come up the year after that. It’s too early to go really crazy about that now, but I’m more concerned about it than I am about next year, now that we’ve added White.

by Auth0r on Feb 18, 2011 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

I have a hard time believing that Eager or Wellwood will get a new contract with us. They’ve done their jobs admirably so far, but they aren’t part of the long-term plans. Mayers, maybe, but that McLaren and Mashinter are chomping at the bit for regular playing time for the same spot makes me think they’re all gone.

I hope we continue to bring back Nichol, but DW unceremoniously let go Ortmeyer, and he was considered valuable last year. We’ve got forward prospects that can fill out any of the bottom six spots. Mitchell is totally expendable and may not even get a contract offer unless he can find a niche.

Setoguchi is the weird one here. I think he’s earned another one or two year contract; he is so streaky that I don’t want to commit to him for the long haul. Niemi might be offered a contract, but I think that has more to do with Stalock’s situation. His contract could go one of a million different ways.

by stufflife on Feb 18, 2011 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

I think it’s the exact opposite. I think Wellwood could definitely stick around as we don’t have a lot of forwards really filling that role as well as he is. Eager should definitely be threatened by Mashinter on this team, but I don’t think there is any reason he couldn’t be a young depth guy going forward as well.

Mayers just isn’t cutting it on this team, that’s why Eager is here. I don’t think he’ll be here next year. No chance.

We all loved Jed, but he didn’t bring anything besides energy to the table. Nichol is still a faceoff king that racks up the hits. I don’t know if we’ll resign him, but he was vastly more valuable to this team than Jed.

Niemi should be resigned… now I’m going to go cut myself for saying that.

by Evilducks on Feb 18, 2011 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

I think Mayers is far less likely to stay than Eager or Wellwood. He’s been diminishing in effectiveness and Mashinter and Eager both play the same role as Mayers while adding scoring. I’m not entirely convinced Eager sticks either.

Wellwood is a possibility, I think. He’s got a stick handling ability not many of the players on the team or in the system have and he’s fit in well with Cloweture and Jumbo-Patty and is willing to take third or fourth line minutes.

Similarly, I think Nichol sticks for a little longer because of his faceoffs and willingness to play on any line and ability to fit with any set of guys. Mitchell is already under contract for next season, but it’s unlikely he sticks after that unless he really shines.

But overall, the point I was making was that the money for this off-season doesn’t concern me because they’re all cheap except Seto, White, and Niemi. The years past that are more concerning because we’ll have young players up for raises.

It’s definitely a huge trade – I’d say bigger than the Kaberle trade because of the sheer unexpectedness of it. Today is so weird.

The "problems" with our defensive corps

weren’t necessarily our ability to defend per se. Our two largest problems were 1) our inability to clear/carry the puck up and out of the zone, which resulted in us getting hemmed deep for long stretches and 2) The lack of someone who is a legitimate threat to unload from the blue line in the offensive zone. Ian White will greatly improve both of these areas for the Sharks.

In my best attempt to translate Coach-speak…

"Right now we’re happy with Carter," McLellan said. "He fits our needs as of today. And every day it will be re-evaluated."

Means: “We have no intention of starting the back-up in the near future. When we think Niemi’s tired, we’ll re-evaluate who the back-up is.” He added that Niemi is asking for more work right now. And logically the Sharks don’t have anyone immediately at hand to replace him, so they’re honoring the request. That’s not to say I don’t think that Hutton could beat the Avs tomorrow or next week, just that it’s not the plan as of now. Or maybe they agree with me and intend to start Carter against the Avs.

But that also might be a cover to not tip the hand of trying to bring back Sateri or Griess, who are both more NHL-ready than Hutton. The team may try to recall one (most likely Griess) or both at or just after the deadline when teams may not be watching waivers as closely. Given that Griess already cleared waivers once and the Isles already traded for an “almost-NHL-ready” goalie, there’s a decent chance Griess slips by. March 5th is the end of his season with Brynas, so that’s the date I’d watch for.

As they’re both returning from Europe, I believe they’d have to go through waivers for the same reason as Nabby. I remember that Griess was specifically noted as having to do that when he was shipped off, so I’m pretty certain there. Sateri I’m less certain of because of his contract being on slightly different statuses, but unless I read otherwise, I’m going to take the safe bet and assume the rule that applies to Nabby and Griess also applies to Sateri.

I’m also not sure when Sateri’s league ends play, though I vaguely recall it going longer than Griess’ league does.

I don’t think Sateri would have to. Something about never playing in the NHL, or just the type of contract he has vs. Greiss being on an NHL only contract.

More teams are in need of goalie help now though. Granted a lot of those teams are pretty much out of the playoff picture anyway (Cue Nabby: "What’s the point???)

Also, maybe a team in the West would do it just to c*ck block DW to dampen the Sharks goalie depth in the playoffs. Like how the Giants picked up Cody Ross to prevent the Padres from taking him. Because of that, I think Greiss is pretty off-limits this season…
