Tonight's game means a little more than just two points.
Throughout the greater part of 2011 there's been a huge focus on obtaining as many points as possible. Games like Columbus, where the Sharks were outplayed for the vast majority of the night and yet managed to somehow get enough goals to win, didn't matter as much on a broad level. The inconsistencies in the Sharks game were allowable considering the circumstances. Two points reigned over all. A limp forecheck or extended stays in the defensive zone brushed aside in favor of those ever precious standings points.
Blown third period leads in Florida and New Jersey? Painful yes, a representation of the troubles seen throughout the year. High shot totals, lack of payoff, lose a game in the final frame. But in the midst of a Sharks winning streak that saw them taking points at a furious pace, these games were quickly forgotten. A vestige of the team's previous inadequacies, a brief glimpse back at those trying times that plagued San Jose for much of their 2010-2011 season. It was a harsh reminder of a frustrated past. It was a mere pebble in the road of a 13-2-1 run.
Since the Sharks emerged from their six game losing streak they have been tested. Western Conference rivals beaten, points obtained, a rise from 12th to 4th in a matter of a month. Teams like Boston, Anaheim, Phoenix, Nashville, Washington, Los Angeles, all worthwhile opponents, all measures of skill. A good crop of teams, decidedly above average, important players, justifiable concern heading into the tilt.
However, since January 20th when San Jose headed into Vancouver and came away with a riveting 2-1 victory, no team has approached the level we will see tonight.
The Detroit Red Wings. The name itself says it all, demands attention. And as San Jose plows headfirst into Tinfoiltown to kick off a tough little three game road trip, everything seems to be coming to a head.
The Wings, winners of their last five, are poised for yet another deep playoff run. The names on the roster go without mentioning, the man behind the bench needs no introduction. It's a group that matches up superbly with the Sharks at nearly every position, one that has, is, and will likely always be the ultimate litmus test. Toss a little Joe Louis Arena into the mix and you've got yourself a bonafide party that's set to kick a few teeth in on its way through the front door. These are the types of games you circle on the calendar three minutes after its released.
And with both teams playing excellent hockey right now, there's no doubt both organizations feel the same way.
Tonight is a test to see just how far the Sharks have come since January 13th. It's a celebration of hockey at its finest level, a preview of the type of games we will see in April.
Buckle up. The NHL doesn't get any better than this.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-3. Goals by White, Marleau, Clowe, and Boyle. In San Jose, a variation of a hat trick is when umbrellas are thrown onto the ice on a rainy night after a three goal performance. In Detroit, a variation of a hat trick is when tinfoil headwear is thrown onto the ice after a Tomas Holmstrom goal is waived off.

It'll be a tough game
With two days off, I hope the Sharks are up to the challenge. They’ve struggled with anything more than 1 day off, but are still 6-4-1 with 2 days off, and 9-6-2 with 2+ days off. Everyone has to play hard for the whole game without slacking. Would be great to see Nemo doing the Nabby jump upon a Sharks victory. Would also be great to see a Shark get an Umbrella Trick at the Joe. :-D
I like the tinfoil trick idea. That would be for every 3 Det. penalties.
If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

Hate the Red Wings...
… But always love watching the match ups between these two. It’s always entertaining and I always have butterflies in my stomach the entire game because plain and simple, Detroit makes me nervous. Especially playing in Joe Louis.
I’m glad we had the two day break before these brutal back to backs (Pittsburgh tomorrow yikes!). I love how the Sharks are playing right now- my only concern is that I still haven’t seen a complete 60 minute game consistantly. I was at the Sharks/Avs game and even that 4-0 win, I thought we were a little complacent (sp?) in the 2nd period. That would be my only complaint.
GO SHARKS!!!!!! This road trip may be more difficult than the 7 gamer a couple weeks ago with Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Calgary. We need all the points we can get.
Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...
GO SHARKS!
4-3 Sharks – an astounding Datsyukian goal is waved off due to the overwhelming douchebaggery of the Wings fanbase doing strange things to the goal light.

I hate the Red Wings
But there’s probably no other non-SJ organization that I respect more. It’s hard to explain, but I think everyone agrees that their fans are not held to that same respect.
Should be a good game. Thank goodness for decent start times (on the East Coast). Go Sharks!

Always a great match-up against the Wings. And now with these expectations, the game will probably end up with a final score of 1-0 on an own goal.

Statistics are like a girl in a bikini. They show a lot, but not everything.
It's Detroit at the Joe. We all know what that means.
But here’s to the Sharks coming out with a passion and making the Wings fans remember last year’s playoffs and this year’s previous visit to the Joe.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
Very stoked about the game and I agree – a huge one on every level.
Another reasons why I always loved Detroit – San Jose games is because we know there will be no trapping we saw New Jersey, Florida, Vancouver and so many others try on the Sharks. Red Wings will play their own game, and so will the Sharks. Datsyuk and Zetteberg pushing the pace, while Murray is blocking tons of shots and throwing hits, while Couture continues to play his best at the Joe.
At this point of time, in my mind, Detroit is San Jose’s biggest rival.
Also, thank God we’re not facing Nabokov tonight.
Fear the Fin - where Russians are underappreciated.
I think this game is huge for both teams. With SJ and Det both playing lights out hockey as of lately I think this game could go far in determining the top team in the west. Let’s be honest Vancover is a great team but i truly believe they don’t have all the necessary pieces to make a long playoff run. Therefore it comes down to the Sharks and Wings.
We all know how good Detroit is during the season but in the Playoffs they are a totally different beast. This game will be Huge for SJ if they get the 2 pts. Not only will they have swept Detroit at home this year, they will lead the season series 2 – 1 with one home game left. If we can pull out the W in the Joe it will prove to everyone that even though Detroit had a down year last year, we still are the better team and that will be huge mentally going into the playoffs.
San Jose has always had a competitive team but I always felt they didn’t believe they were on the same level as the wings. Since McLellan has taken over, he has changed this team in numerous ways but none more evident than when they play the Wings. Last year’s playoff series against Detroit was a testament to that. We had Detroit’s number last year, and if we can go into the Joe tonight and steal a W it will another reminder to Hockey-town that their reign over the WC is over. This game will tell us if the sharks have truly turned things around.
I don’t get too excited for regular season games that too since they don’t really mean that much in the overall picture of an entire season (especially since being a sharks) but this is different. I hate to place a whole season on one game but I truly believe this is the defining moment of this season for the Sharks. Here it is, with only a handful of games left in the season, can the Sharks go on the road and beat a hot Detroit team? Can they prove to all the doubters that last year wasn’t a fluke? Is this the team that is finally going to bring a cup to SJ? Tonight’s game is going to be a 60 min war and the team with the most heart, not talent, is going to be the victor. Question is will it be San Jo?

Mind if I ask
where in Kansas you stayed?
I’m guessing one of the college towns. We’re a very diverse state, you know. We have some parts that have a shitload of wheat and tornadoes; then, we have other parts that have less wheat, but the same amount of tornadoes.
by J.J. from Kansas on Feb 22, 2011 1:18 PM PST up reply actions
It would be wrong to call it a college town, even though I worked at one (a community college, first gig out of grad school)—in Iola. Which is like 75 miles south of Lawrence. Kind of remote. Never really got used to it, in that year.
How about you? I never made it across the western part of the state, which I kind of regret, but I wouldn’t have wanted to make that drive in the car I drove then.

Northeast corner here, about 40 miles in the opposite direction from Lawrence. The place where Michael Vick used to summer (except on the outside).
It’s pretty common suburbia up here. 30 minutes from the big city. Hate to say it, but even we look down on the more rural areas of the state.

Oh yes. My girlfriend lived in Springfield, MO that year, so usually I’d head out there on weekends, but found Kansas City and its suburbs, like Overland Park, to be pretty fun. Such a different world than the farm towns. But it certainly was a unique experience!

Richards is for real. They’ve got youth. They’ve found some stability in goal maybe, and if they do find new ownership, they have scads and scads of cap space. The big loss they have is that Dave Tippet is coaching in Phoenix.

I'll go ahead and be the voice of dissent
Neal will probably be good in Pittsburgh, but he needs the change of scenery to be good. He wasn’t going to give Dallas anything more in my opinion.
Goligoski is probably similar in terms of needing the change of scenery to be effective, but to be honest, puck-moving defenseman are harder to come by than power forwards.

that is true but i think that giving up 2 young up and comers is too much for Goligoski. i mean it’s not like they are getting an Ian White in return, if that was the case then it would have been a hell of a trade ha

Niskanen is 25 I think
And I think the consensus is that he had reached his ceiling, so it’s hard to think of him as an up and comer in my eyes. He’s basically a stopgap replacement for Goligoski in Pittsburgh until they decide who should take over his role.
Dallas probably overpaid, but, meh, for what Goligoski COULD BE, you have to overpay. Again, puck-moving defensemen, hard to come by.

I cannot believe that we’ve gotten both Jason Demers and Justin Braun in two consecutive years. Hopefully they’ll continue improving as well.
And now White. And apparently Huskins too. Maybe Pickles will find some of his early offensive success. And Wallin will do something.

These are the kinds of players Doug Wilson looks for
I may or may not have heard this from him in a conversation that may or may not have taken place.
But effectively, he believes the NHL is a young man’s game, and he looks for mobile defensemen because he wants them shutting down agile fowards. In essence, he’s more worried about matching up against Datsyuk and Zetterberg than he is about matching up against Holmstrom. He obviously WANTS someone who can neutralize Holmstrom, but it’s easier to find a big body than it is to find someone with the skating skill to keep up with the Datsyuks and the Zetterbergs of the league.

If White stays and Braun and Demers progress, there won’t be any big need for Vlasic to produce offensively. Which is probably when that’ll pick up.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
All we need then is our big body to clear the crease
And life is gravy. I wouldn’t mind Brent Seabrook in that role for the right price.

Apparently Niskanen wasn’t really hot stuff. So they’re actually kind of pleased with this. Of course, if Gogo doesn’t score and doesn’t do real well on D, it’s an issue.
But apparently Neal is only what Richards made him. So I guess they’re happy. They also get cap space. Maybe it isn’t as bad a move as it looks. But seeing as they lost a guy like Neal, it’s not exactly the right direction.

Dallas wasn’t getting anything out of Neal or Niskanen, so, does it really matter if you trade 2 players you’re getting nothing out of versus just one?

No, except in the sense that I could absolutely see Neal and Niskanen both having quite a resurgence with Pittsburgh—especially Neal next season, when he’s ideally on a line with either Crosby or Malkin.
I mean, in a way it’s impossible to judge trades. If Neal were traded instead to Florida, odds are much lower that he plays well compared to the next several years in Pittsburgh. So many variables at play. Well, so goes life, right? We can only judge what happens, not the hypothetical. And so in this case, I think Pittsburgh might come out really nicely in the trade, long-term.

I agree that both players could rebound in PIT
But that’s kinda the point to me. They probably WEREN’T going to do anything more in Dallas. So what’s the value of two guys who are maybe going to help someone else, but are probably NOT going to help you?
I think you sell those kind of guys, and know that you aren’t going to get what they’re worth in return, but you won’t get nothing. Holding on to players like that just means you WILL get nothing in my opinion.

Yes, I think we’re on the same page in our thinking. The only question is whether or not they could have held out and gotten better value—someone more complete that Goligoski. But if he fits what they wanted (and he certainly does in terms of age and dollars), then why not go for it? Especially when trading out of conference.
I do wonder a bit about teams giving up early, to some extent, on their own young talent recently. The Colorado trade really struck me as jumping the gun. Johnson could really turn things around, but to give up on two really talented young assets in Stewart and Shattenkirk? Ugh. That one still doesn’t sit right.

That Colorado trade was just… Argh, makes me feel bad even if I’m not at all an Avs fan.
“More complete than Goligoski” is the issue. It seems like he was one of the best available relatively young D-men out there. We got White ;)
"Logan Couture is a dirty, filthy man. Tell all your friends" - Mr. Plank
The financials have a lot to do with us getting White
We’re taking on salary, and ‘Canes management saves some money. I don’t think Dallas is in the same boat in that regard. So I don’t know that they could go out and pick up White’s salary, which then makes Goligoski a better option for them organizationally.
As for St. Louis and Colorado, man, I dunno. I just don’t know. We knew after Wellwood we weren’t going to be doing business with the Blues again this season, so, there you are.

If Neal were traded to Florida, the Stars wouldn’t be getting as much in return. It would’ve made the trade look worse at face value.
Frankly, both teams are poised to come off rather nicely from this trade. If Richards doesn’t resign, though, the Stars however…

Important for us
Easy to think you’re all that when you whoop the basement dwellers 4-0.
The Sharks are much improved since the start of the season, have some new blood to try out, and might be playing something resembling consistent NHL level hockey, but you never know until you play a team who has been doing that consistently.
I’m still not sold on Vancouver, even though they’ve owned us this season, so that pretty much leaves you guys as the measuring stick in the West.

Our five-game win streak is four against the East and the Minnesota Wild, so I can tell you the Wings’ side would like to see their team manage their intensity well enough against a team that should represent a good test of their own.

From watching Alain Vigneault take an insanely offensive talented team and put all the weight of a playoff series on Luongo’s shoulders to watching him lose control of his guys and get outcoached, there’s more than just a goalie at play as to why I’ll only believe it when I see it as far as their playoff chances are.
If the ‘Nucks are going to win the cup, it’s going to be for the same reason the Hawks did it last year, they wre too talented for their coach to screw it up.

I don’t know why. It probably just looks dramatic on TV, but it’s nowhere near as bad as some of the other gate struggles throughout the league.
But, to be honest, it really only looks worse because, if memory serves, the Lions have sold out every game for years, and season tickets sell out in a matter of hours.

Yeah, it's the lower bowl issue
They sell out most games, but the aging concourse at the Joe makes getting to those seats take a little longer and, let’s face it, most of the lower bowl seats are still corporate-owned and a lot of the people who get those seats are more interested in schmoozing than watching hockey. It’s definitely annoying at times, as I’d stab any number of people to have season tickets in the lower bowl at the Joe.

I have to admit, most of the time when I go I sit in the lower bowl (either I get free tickets from season ticket holder friends or my dad wants to splurge because he loves the food in club). While it definitely isn’t as raucous as the upper bowl, I assure you, a majority of the people care about the game just as much as the upper bowl, they just show it in a different way. There are a lot of suits in the lower bowl, but I’m sure a lot of them came directly from work.

But would it kill you to keep a Jersey in your car? But to me, worse than that, is the guys who bring the girlfriend who has no interest in hockey but are trying to show off what a baller they are by buying lower bowl seats. The arm candy can’t be bothered to wear teal because it’d clash with her outfit, to say nothing of cheering.
These offenders just seem much more prevalent in the lower bowl, and you so often hear from folks who’d love to go to a game, but just can’t get a hold of tickets.

Other than the point differential these teams seem fairly even except for the goals per game.
Detroit is averaging over a half goal more per game without generating more shots than SJ. They’re giving up 0.3 more goals per game however. SJ has a slightly better PP @ 22.8% compared to Detroit’s 20.8%. SJ has 4 more goals on the PP. The PK is identical @ 81.7% and SJ has one more shorty and has given up one less. Since SJ is averaging almost 3 more penalty minutes per game, this one should come down to who stays out of the box and who scored on the PP.
If SJ scores first, they’ve got a fighting chance or better
