Every postseason it seems as if a goaltender manages to carry his team through a series, elevating his game to Dominek Hasek esque levels of brilliance. From Craig Anderson and Jaroslav Halak in 2010 to Jonas Hiller in 2009 to Dwayne Roloson in 2006 and San Jose's own Evgeni Nabokov in 2004, the list gets longer with each passing year.

Some state that goaltending is the toughest position in all of sports, due to the inherent nature of the position. It's a fickle game of inches and milliseconds, where one tiny mistake that puts a goaltender off their angle by the slightest degree can determine a period, a game, a series, a season, and a career. Goaltenders are relentlessly worshipped like deities when they play well, gifts of frankincense and myrrh humbly bestowed at their feet...and yet, on the very next day, become publicly castrated when things go wrong.

There is no doubt that it is the most unfairly maligned, and overly praised, position in all of sports.

The reason I touch upon goaltending today is for a pair of reasons-- for starters, Antti Niemi's run over the 2011 calendar year (and even before then) has been a magnificent one, putting him on pace to be a huge contributor for the Sharks down the stretch as well as the postseason. Niemi has been just about the sole reason for the Sharks turnaround since their six game losing streak, an assertion that is supported heavily by the numbers behind it all. In 2010 he was a huge part of Chicago's Western Conference Finals win over San Jose-- this year, he'll attempt to do the same thing on the other side of the aisle.

The second reason goaltending serves some importance today is the fact that Nashville's Pekka Rinne has stymied the Sharks all season long, and without Patrick Marleau's goal in overtime last night, might as well done it again. Coupled with the fact that Vancouver, who boasts a tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider that, is on the docket tonight, it only makes sense to highlight some netminders in the Western Conference that have the potential to do what so many others have done in seasons past.

Carry their team to a playoff win without getting much help.

Star-divide

Even save strength percentage is a statistic that can tell us a lot about a goaltender's ability for a variety of reasons. For starters, shorthanded save percentage is something that varies widely year by year-- there's very few (if any) goaltenders who are able to consistently put up staggering numbers in this situation. Secondly, at 5 on 5, the amount of scoring chances relatives to shots against tend to balance out. Some teams are obviously more dangerous than others when pushing the play in the offensive zone, but for the most part, you have a much more consistent body of data to analyze.

Coupled with the fact that a team who goes shorthanded more than another puts his goalie at a disadvantage long-term. A shot against when killing a penalty is more dangerous than a shot against at even strength, which regular SV% does not take into account-- for example, if a goalie faced 100 shots at even strength and another faced 100 shots on the penalty kill we would expect the even strength goaltender to have better numbers.

All that being said, here are the goaltenders in the Western Conference who have produced EV SV%'s over .930 this season:

This is by no means an exclusive list of goaltenders worth their weight in oversized pads-- Antti Niemi falls just short of the mark with a .929 SV%, and considering his immense struggles in the first two months of the season, the fact that he has reached this mark is a huge testament to his progress to date. Furthermore, Ilya Bryzgalov (.926) and Jonathan Quick (.925) don't crack the top of this list, but are worthy goaltenders in their own right and have the potential to steal a series.

The point isn't so much which goaltender is able to steal a series-- that exists in every single playoff series ever played. In a time frame of six games anyone can catch a hot streak and see the play develop seconds ahead of time. It's what makes the postseason so riveting. But if you're looking for sustained success over the course of a season in order to highlight your "better bets" as to who is more likely to steal a series, this top five list has some notable names.

I've said it once

Kari Lehtonen has always struggled with injuries but is a formidable talent when he's healthy-- his even strength save percentage this season speaks volumes, and his play in the beginning of the season showcased just what he is capable of. Lehtonen may fly under the radar (and a lot of that is due to his injury history), but make no mistake about it, he's a top-flight goaltender who can steal some playoff games.

>> "Pacific Profiles: A Look at the Dallas Stars"

so I'll say it again-- Lehtonen is an extremely dangerous goaltender, and with a Stars team that has given San Jose a lot of trouble this season, that's a playoff matchup that could pose some issues for San Jose.

Jonas Hiller goes without saying, and it will be interesting to see if he can come back from his vertigo symptoms with enough time this season to propel the Ducks into the postseason. The Sharks match up well against the Ducks however, and the roster is vastly different than the one from 2009. The same can be said for Niklas Backstrom to some degree-- he's an excellent goaltender that can win some games on his own, but considering the roster in front of him, the ability to steal a series outright is made a lot more difficult. The Wild are a fringe playoff team right now, and although they have some game changers in Backstrom, Burns, and the perpetually underrated Koivu, the roster will struggle with their lack of depth in the postseason. Nashville is a tough team to play against even if they lack scoring-- Rinne's ability has been seen firsthand by the Sharks this season, and coupled with the blueline in front of him as well as a Head Coach that always manages to extract every last drop of talent from his roster, they're a team that could play the upset card this season.

Which brings us to Roberto Luongo. A lot has been made about his playoff inadequacies (specifically against Chicago), and that has tainted his legacy in the public eye. The postseason is where careers and reputations are made, a fact that continues to keep the superb Tomas Vokoun under the radar.. And while Luongo hasn't achieved that level of social status quite yet, there's a lot here that indicates to me this postseason is going to be a hell of a ride for Big Lu.

For starters, there's no doubt Vancouver is the deepest team from front to back in the Western Conference, if not the entire NHL. Their forward group is stellar and strong down the middle, their blueline has an impact player on every pairing (when healthy, and they're expected to be nearly 100% by the time the postseason comes around). Furthermore, the Canucks finally have a backup goaltender they are comfortable with. Cory Schneider has had a very good season thus far with Vancouver, posting a .927 EV SV%, which removes some of the pressure off of Roberto Luongo. He's still the man, but he doesn't necessarily have to be THE MAN if Vancouver is to win the Stanley Cup. Along with the fact that Henrik Sedin is now serving as team Captain (Luongo held the job for the past two seasons), there's a little less pressure on Luongo to perform.

Cory Schneider gets the start tonight for the Nucks'. Niemi likely gets tapped for the Sharks. Although it may not be the showdown between the pipes both fanbases are hoping to see this season, tonight's game against Vancouver is a huge one for both organizations. The last two games between these clubs have been electric affairs. Tonight has shown no signs of being any different.

Kick the tires and light the fires big daddy. Let's get this one underway.

Prediction: Hockey happens. <3's and shit.

Will be an interesting and intense game.

Sharks take it 2-0. Nemo gets his “Nee-mo” chant for making fantastic saves all game long, and the fans taunt “Luuuuu” when he lets in one late softy goal. The second Sharks goal comes as an empty netter.

There is no reasoning behind the prediction, it just popped into my mind.

I’m nervous – but I’m hoping for a great game! People won’t be able to say this could be an image of a “Western Conf. Championship” only b/c Lou isn’t starting, but it’ll be a great chance to see how our forwards and D do against a hot Cunucks team.

11 out of the last 13 games...

Have been decided by one goal difference. Can we get a little cushion tonight?

In regards to Hiller (who I hate when the Sharks play the Ducks but love him every other game), I strongly doubt he will be back before the end of the season. I have been watching the post practice videos of Jonas and it seems like he still struggles. He stated last week that every time he turns his head quickly, the dizziness and vertigo come in full force. It’s going to take a while before he starts in goal for the Ducks again, which is okay by me if it means the Ducks don’t make the postseason.

Ready for a great game tonight. I’d like to say 4-1 Sharks but based on the one goal win trend we have, I’ll say 4-3 Sharks.

GO SHARKS!!!!!

Vancouver

So I look at Vancouver this year as the Sharks of the past. Best record in the NHL, good goaltending and strong play from all 4 lines. In fairness, perhaps they are a bit more talented than SJ teams of the past, but still it’s a team blowing through the regular season and then having a ton of pressure facing them come playoff time.

I do not expect the Nucks to win it this year, rather I’m betting on SJ for two reasons: 1) The S.F. Giants, 2) No pressure and a relentless will to win. The talent is here, as is the goaltending. It will come down to health, desire, and execution. I see this team posessing a never say die attitude and an unrelenting desire to win. I guess that’s what years of underachievment do to you?

Without Boyle tonight, it will be tough to completely judge this potential Western Conf match up, but I see SJ winning if the effort and execution are there. If not, I’m still not overly worried, as Vancouver is an excellent team and the playoffs are still a month away.

Go Sharks!!!!

I agree they got the taste last year and were on a roll until we met the Hawks. You can tell that they have been dying to get to the post season, so once there then there is no other team that can stop us. I really think this is our year.

by beneil10 on Mar 10, 2011 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

I feel like the problem with last year’s series against the Hawks is we had like a week off between the Red Wings series and the Chicago series. Historically this team does rather poorly after long breaks and I feel that it disrupted our mojo.

1) The S.F. Giants,

Heatley’s slider is nasty but I don’t see how the Giants have anything to do with San Jose’s chances to win the Cup.

2) No pressure and a relentless will to win.

The pressure on this team to win in the postseason is most definitely there. Why has that changed from any other year?

LOL

Well, I liken the S.F. Giants to the Sharks in that no one believed they could win it all. It almost became a sort of joke after they lost to the Angels that one year in the series after being up 3-2. So I guess the Giants to me symbolize that in any given year, you never know…

As for the pressure, perhaps I should have stated that most pundits believe that SJ is not a clutch playoff performer and will find a way to flame out come playoff time. So because we’re not picked this year to win much of anything (rather Vancouver or Philly is) I think that flying under the radar will help this team avoid some of the pressure they’ve felt in past playoffs when we were heavily favored against the Ducks, etc…

Obviously you’re right, there is always pressure. But for some reason, this team seems to handle it better, if not even thrive on it a bit? So let’s hope that allows us to get to the Con. Finals. At least then if we play like the Giants, we may find that it’s our year. Bret Hedican knows a little bit about getting hot at the right time or perhaps Martin St. Louis.

Anyway, great post and please keep up the fantastic work!

They did pretty well with the pressure last year…only finally losing in the WCF to the better team. And if this team wins its division, there will still be pressure to win it all.

With regards to the Giants; sure, no one believed, but the fact was the Giants had the best pitching in the world for the post-season, with all of their starters being absolutely dialed in with their delivery and location. They shut down the most feared offenses in baseball because of it and got just enough timely scoring throughout the lineup.

There are parallels to the Sharks, but let’s be realistic about what we believe in. I’m all about believing, but we have to know what we’re getting behind. If we’re going to be like the Giants, then we’re basically doing what the Blackhawks did last season and playing good solid D, and getting timely scoring.

As far as the pressure, no amount of external pressure is going to match what the Sharks put on themselves. It doesn’t matter what the pundits say. In the playoffs, the team you are facing is going to be head to head with you for at least 4 games, possibly 7. No one looks past anyone. This team knows the pressure is on to win. Age and the Salary Cap mean very real things when it comes to “the window” for certain players on this team. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says. They have to deal with the pressure they and the organization put on themselves.

When Patty is coming down the wing in game seven of the WCF’s with the score tied at two late in the third, the pressure he feels isn’t going to be because Pierre Lebrun picked the Sharks to advance to the Cup Finals.

Good point.

Vancouver doesn't worry me...

Yeah, they may win tonight, or we may win. It should be a good game. And with Schneider in for Luongo, i actually think their chances might be a bit better (sorry, not a Luongo fan). Ultimately, the Nucks just don’t scare me. The Sedins are fine players, but the rest of their scoring depth still doesn’t scare me. They’re good defensive forwards (especially up the middle), but they aren’t game changers. Their blueline is perpetually on IR. And Luongo…well, until he proves that he can actually play well in the playoffs, I won’t be scared of him (sad fact of life…gotta prove you can do it). Some people just handle pressure better than others. In the end, if it came down to Sharks-Canucks for the WCF, besides me being shocked that either team is there, I would like the Sharks’ chances.

As for tonight, I hope the Sharks win, of course. We’re only 2 points back of Detroit for the 2 seed, which is pretty awesome.

What does worry me about Vancouver

Is the Chicago principle: If you play strong team defense, you don’t need goaltending. And the numbers seem to indicate just that. Vancouver plays very strong team D, making up for a lot of injuries on the back end.

Luongo is still their weakest link. If Vancouver ever fails to clear the crease and allows someone to get in his head, then they’re toast. But given his SV% coupled with the total SA he’s faced, he may finally be turning the corner.

Then again, if the Gold Medal game is any indication, he still needs elite teammates to get him over the hump.

Vancouver is third in the NHL in goals per game, the Sedin’s are 1-3 in the points race across the entire NHL, Kesler has 33 goals (!!!), and the team has a whole has 9 players with double digit goal numbers (7 for San Jose). Their strength this season is just like Chicago’s last season— a massive amount of depth, an excellent blueline (I hear you on their health, but again, nearly everyone is expected to be 100% by the postseason), and a goaltending tandem that has been unfairly maligned for their issues. Look at Luongo in 07— he had something like a .940 SV% but didn’t have the team in front of him to make a deep run. He’s consistently been a top-flight goaltender, and when you’re dealing with sample size issues, the postseason has a way of developing a bad/great reputation for a player when they don’t necessarily deserve it. I think this is his year to shine.

Vancouver is beyond scary this season in my opinion. They’re absolutely loaded.

Furthermore, if you’re looking at special teams, they’re first in PP% and second in PK%. I guess I can understand the notion that you have to see it to believe it in terms of postseason success, and since you feel the same way about San Jose your thinking is consistent— respek! (/snaps index finger on thumb), but I guess I don’t share the assertion that they’re not dangerous offensively. Depth and special teams are huge in the postseason, and you get that in spades with the Nucks.

Yeah, I understand the stats behind the team...

I’m just not scared of them. Kesler had a great start to the season, but looks like the same player again now (12 points since February began…and only 3 in his last 10 games). The blueline was really where, beginning of the season, I saw an elite contender…but they’re all hurt. If they all come back healthy in the postseason AND playing their best hockey (hard to do coming off of long injury absences), then maybe they’ll scare me a bit. I do think a strong blueline is key to championship aspirations.

I dunno, we’ll see. It’s more of a gut feeling based on past experiences for me. Of course, all Champions have to start somewhere. Detroit can’t win it every year…and unproven teams can always prove themselves to be ready at the drop of a hat.

He’s consistently been a top-flight goaltender, and when you’re dealing with sample size issues, the postseason has a way of developing a bad/great reputation for a player when they don’t necessarily deserve it.

The thing is though, small sample size effectively DOES determine reputation. The post-season is entirely small sample size when compared to the regular season, and an overall career. Add in the fact that you’re playing the same opponent multiple times in a short time frame, and the numbers can get skewed even more. The post-season is all about outliers in that sense. You’re dealing with a much smaller set of data and putting it on steroids. Conclusions you would draw from more aggregated data have to get thrown out the window because you’re going to be dealing with data points on the extreme ends of the bell curve.

I think this is why it IS fair to make conclusions based on the smaller sample size. The numbers that, in the past, have made the Sharks such a regular season behemoth matter little in the post-season because the parameters change. You’re not playing 30 other teams, at least 25 of which are bad by comparison. You’re only playing 3-4 teams, all very good, and now 100% squarely focused on defeating you.

This is also why I think Luongo still has something to prove (even though you’re probably right, if ever the stars have aligned for him it’s this season). The regular season looks good, but the type of meltdowns he’s suffered against Chicago beg the question, can he beat a good team 4 out of 7?

Here’s Luongo’s postseason SV% numbers:

06-07: .941 SV%
08-09: .914 SV%
09-10: .895 SV%

To classify him as a guy who struggles with the pressure of the postseason is fair if he had put up sub-.900’s his whole career, but that’s just not the case. Luongo had one phenomenal postseason (seriously, phenomenal), one average one, and one bad one.

If he struggles so much with the pressure how come he was able to absolutely turn it on in 2007? That’s what I’m getting at.

Completely agree. However, runs from teams like Montreal last season show that a team can get outplayed throughout an entire series and still advance to the next round. Hell, San Jose was thirty seconds away from losing game two last season and going into Colorado down 2-0 hole. The point is not so much “regular season statistics are superior in every sense” (I take a lot of stock into a guy’s postseason numbers) but rather “shit happens, hockey happens, and when you’re looking at 6-12 games worth of data a player’s ability to perform under pressure is pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to what is effecting those results.”

Which isn’t to say that performing under pressure doesn’t exist— sports psychology is a huge thing and effects games, especially at the goaltending level. I just don’t think it is as big of a factor as it is made out to be. These guys face pressure every day, have faced pressure all of their careers from midgets to the NHL. If they weren’t able to handle any type of pressure they wouldn’t be in the league today.

2007 was a good year

But part of that to me is the series against the offensively challenged Dallas Stars. Not to say he wasn’t good against the Ducks, but he did get caught in double overtime of an elimination game not watching the shooter and signalling to the ref for a penalty.

"shit happens, hockey happens

Pretty much this when it comes to a play like that. But I think it’s fair to ask if hockey keeps happening to a guy, can you keep saying that it’s not a factor?

On that token, can’t we say the reasons for his struggles the last two seasons were because he went against a very deep Chicago team that had a lot of offensive firepower?

As for pressure, I most definitely think it is a factor in sports— hopefully I haven’t come across as someone who feels they don’t exist. I just think that there are other factors that play a just as large (and likely larger) role in postseason success. Pressure influences, pressure exists. Just not at a level where it is the sole factor of a player’s performance.

I'd put some of his struggles as being "Chicago related"

But it’s the nature of them that are troubling to me. The big time GAAs when it comes to the Hawks, the nature of his comments after losses, the nature of the goals he sometimes gives up.

He’s a very good goaltender no doubt. I feel about him now the way I feel about Nabby. I think he’s a better goaltender than people give him credit for, but I wonder if his best seasons are behind him. The days when he was the best goaltender it the world might be left behind in Florida. And Vancouver may have squandered his best years behind otherwise mediocre teams (much the same way the Sharks let Nabby languish behind more underwhelming teams in the mid 2000s).

It raises the concerns about what it will take for him to get it done now. He’s still top-tier, but if he needs to be the difference maker, can he? Nabby needed to be our difference maker against the Hawks last season, and he couldn’t quite do it. A few seasons ago, maybe. And that’s all the difference in the world.

I think you generally present a balanced view of sports psychology and statistical analysis. I just like playing Devil’s advocate.

12 points since February began…and only 3 in his last 10 games. Which is pretty much the kind of scoring clip he usually has put up in past seasons. He had a great start to the season…but anyone can get hot playing with the Sedins on the power play. For me, and maybe I don’t watch the Nucks enough to know for sure, but Kesler doesn’t seem like the kind of offensive power than can transform a line into a potent threat. He’s a nice piece, and I wouldn’t mind him on the Sharks…but he’s not a game changer.

Sharks win 17-3. Goals by Logan Couture ( x14) and Justin Braun (x3). Ryan Kesler scores all three Canucks goals in an attempt to prove me wrong in my asinine assertion that he’s not a game changer. His hat trick does little to change the outcome of the game. National media says its not a true show of power for the Sharks because if Luongo was in net, no way we score more than 9-10…

Technically, the Sharks are 3 points back of being the #2 seed, due to tiebreakers. A Sharks win tonight would tie them in points, but Det. would’ve played one less game. Also, if Det. loses tomorrow after a Sharks win tonight, Det. would hold the wins tiebreaker because of the Shootout Wins not counting.
