Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

"It’s just something with Boston," Thornton said. "It just seems like they have a horseshoe. We’ve seen the [Milan] Lucic cross-check to the head [of Maxim Lapierre] earlier, and there’s no disciplinary thing.

"It’s just something about Boston and the disciplinary [process] is on their side. I’m not sure why that is. I’m not assuming that Colin’s kid is on the team and that’s why, but it’s really bizarre."

Joe Thornton on the Chara hit on Pacioretty and the ensuing lack of suspension.

Hey Joe, how do you feel about throwing that full tank of gas into the fire of this debate? Jesus.

I’m glad more players are speaking out about this.

Same here

But Thornton really should not have dragged his old club into this. It’s one thing to complain about the NHL not doling out proper punishments, it’s an entirely different thing to say it’s because the league favor certain teams.

True

Though for some reason or another, it seems like Boston is always involved in this sort of shit.

Montreal police are doing a criminal investigation of Chara's hit.

I agree JT probably shouldn’t have brought the whole Boston preferable treatment thing up but that Globe & Mail article is a bit of a joke. It took the quotes it wanted to make the article as Joe bitching about Boston…there was a full article in the Vancouver Sun, which was actually a pretty good read and had some comments from H. Sedin and Clowe as well:

I don’t mind the comments, at least he’s not afraid to speak his mind. Agree with him or not, its good he can talk this freely about issues in the NHL.

In the interests of full disclosure, I was in favor of Joe being suspended for the Perron hit.

That being said, I totally understand why he’s speaking out. Given that he got two games, and Chara got none, for what is in every way a far worse hit, really calls into question the uneven criterion used in supplementary disciplinary hearings. The exact wording of his criticism can be nitpicked, but the fact that he’s saying anything is to be commended in my opinion.

I think Joe is still seething a bit over not having anyone explain what he did wrong. While I had hoped Joe wouldn’t be suspended, I figured he would be, but I’ll admit that having no clear reasoning behind it expressed pissed me off. So I can see where he’d think “wait, they didn’t tell me what I did wrong, but gave me two because it’s the rule, and now Chara nearly kills a guy, regardless of intention, and walks with nothing?”

I can’t stand that sometimes the injury matters, sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes the history of the player matters, sometimes it doesn’t. And that making a “suck it” gesture is worse than a hit to the head (Joe’s or Chara’s). I really feel like the league needs the discipline handled by a three-person panel and needs to outline clear thresholds for length of suspension.

This

I actually felt like Joe should’ve been suspended for his hit. But to give no explanation, and then to not hand out similar penalties to those who committed just as bad as Joe’s (Perron’s still out)?

The NHL needs to get it’s act together REALLY quickly. The NFL looks to be locking out a full season, and apparently they’re telling NBA players to prepare for a strike/lockout as well. That means that it’ll be the NHL and only the NHL from October (right after the World Series) till about March-April (start of MLB season). This sort of crap isn’t going to cut it when there are more people watching hockey (whether they want to or not).

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who knows how to assess that video...

Ive seen the Chara “hit” about 40 times now, and I still cannot see anything malicious about it. I would go so far as to say he might not have even deserved interference on the play..

all I know is, I have extreme doubts he had any intent to send the guy into the stanchion…

Drew: 'Oh no.. That is certainly the meaty part alright, but it's not the thigh..."
Randy: "No... that bone is NOT connected to the thigh bone..."

you had “extreme doubts”. Maybe you should open and close your browser about 40 times and look at that picture.

I think he wanted to send him in to the boards. And I think it was interference.

But I don’t think he wanted to hit him into the stanchion.

I think if he wanted to hurt him like that, he would have hustled a bit more. Chara seems like he barely moves in the video.

I still think he should have been suspended a game or two, especially with the Jumbo suspension.

I think we’ve all seen the video tons of times, that doesn’t make you the “expert” on it. That just make you one out of many who sees it one way.
