By no means is Antti Niemi's return to Chicago as big as it was on December 30th. And with both teams smack in the middle of a grueling playoff push, the undercurrents of last season's Western Conference Finals appearance will likely be set aside in favor of a focus on the two points at hand-- especially when one considers the massive roster overhaul the Blackhawks went through this summer.

However, Niemi's return to Chicago does pose an interesting question-- with the 2011 calendar year bearing witness to some of the best goaltending the Finnish netminder has ever played, the question inevitably becomes "Did Chicago make the correct choice in letting him go?" Or rather, "Has goaltending been a real issue for the team this season?"

Corey Crawford has been serviceable this season, as a .917 SV% will attest to. He's essentially taken the reigns as the stalwart between the pipes, and when one considers the struggles Turco has had thus far, Chicago isn't really in a position to decide otherwise. After a rocky end to his stint in Dallas many expected the former Stars goaltender to find a revival of sorts playing behind Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook, but those offseason prognostications proved to be as fleeting as the Chicago sun-- a .898 SV% and a mere four starts in the calendar year has reduced Turco to Antero Niittymaki slash Carter Hutton slash there's-too-many-names-to-even-recall levels of faceoff charting prowess.

The funny thing is, Chicago has actually received better goaltending this season than they did last year. The tandem of Cristobal Huet and Antti Niemi gave the Hawks a .903 SV% last season while Crawford and Turco have given Chicago a .909 SV%. In other words, if you're looking for a reason to explain the drop-off in Chicago dominance, looking towards the pipes shouldn't be your first course of action.

Scoring depth is usually touted as a reason for Chicago's relative decline to where they were last season, and it makes sense to some degree-- a lot of solid role players such as Kris Versteeg, Dustin Byfuglien, and Andrew Ladd were moved in order to accrue cap space, and guys like John Madden (who was a huge fixture on the penalty kill last season) were not re-signed in free agency.

Where Chicago has been hit the hardest is in the defensive end of the ice however-- the penalty kill has been godawful, they're allowing more shots on net than they did last season, as well as putting less pucks on net in the offensive zone. Players like Niklas Hjalmarsson have struggled-- even the previously infalliable Duncan Keith has had his fair share of issues this season. No longer is the team able to dictate play to the phenomenal degree they did in 2010, which has led to a situation where goaltending begins to have an effect.

Star-divide

Although Chicago's netminders have a higher save percentage this year, the lack of insulation from the team as a whole has highlighted the inadequacies and made goaltending a point of concern for the fanbase. No matter which way you slice it a .909 SV% isn't going to inspire much confidence unless shot totals are low, and for the Hawks this season, the shot totals haven't been able to overcome that factor (even if they give the 8th least amount of shots against in the NHL).

Is Chicago still a dangerous team? Most definitely so. Despite the fact that they are seventh in the West and will likely be playing for a playoff spot in the final week of the season (which won't be a peculiar circumstance in the Conference this season in the slightest) their underlying numbers are still very strong across the board. Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook still make up one of the premier pairings in the NHL, and players like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Patrick Sharp (the list goes on) comprise a core that is very dangerous and able to make a huge impact on a teams results.

It's hard to call a team like Chicago a "sleeper" considering they are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, but much like the Dallas Stars, the makeup of the team has a lot of high-impact players at the top of the roster. Depth isn't their friend by any means, and that generally is the difference during the postseason, but a first round date with the Blackhawks isn't something that should be especially appealing for anyone in the West. I don't think they have the goaltending or depth to make another deep run, but if there's one thing you can't do is rule out a young goaltender with something to prove. Niemi did it last year, and there's always the chance Crawford is able to do it again.

San Jose heads into tonight's game on the heels of a two game losing streak. It's hard to call it that considering the circumstances involved (shootouts-- the bane of hockey's existence) as well as the performance of the team within those games (heart-- the organ essential), but as we've seen thus far this season, fortunes are able to change quickly, tides can be turned at the drop of a umbrella hat.

No one saw a 9-0-1 run coming after San Jose lost their sixth straight to Edmonton in January, and while I think a similar 180 would be even more surprising (and frankly, outside of the realm of possibility considering San Jose has been dominant even in their losses), there's always a chance that the fickle sport of hockey decides to play devil's advocate and throws a curveball down the stretch.

Two points on the table in Chicago. Welcome to The March That Matters.

Prediction: Sharks win 1-0. Goal by Pavelski, whose All-American smile makes Patrick Sharp look like Richard Kiel.

I hope they ban the shoot out next season?

Even though they technically count as losses, I don’t think of the last two games as turning out that way. Yes we left 2 points on the board, but to me, they were ties. I’d prefer to see the NHL go back to the old format of one point each for a tie and the extra point going to the victor. Not sure if the winner should get a third point, but that’s open for debate? The shoot out has no flow and isn’t really part of the game itself. That said, I don’t see any hangover from those two “losses”. My bigger concern is Logan Couture’s lack of energy out there. He looks spent and seems to have hit the wall. If so, I’m worried about our lack of scoring from guys like him, or Heatley or even Pavs. There have only been a couple of consistent scorers this year, and I do worry about that come playoff time. I’d like to get Nichol and Huskins back, so that McClellan is free to play who he feels is deserving and rest guys like Cooch who’s legs look like spaghetti out there. He falls over at the slightest touch. On a positve, I’m thrilled to have Boyle back, he looked good in the last game. We’re going to need everyone come playoff time (I wish it was starting now) the regular season is just too long…

I like the shootout. No matter what it provides a clear winner to the game. Nothing is more annoying to fans than paying money to see a game only to have the result end in a tie. Without the shootout, some teams could play defensive 4on4 (easier than defensive 5on5, more ice for keepaway) just to drag the clock down because they’re tired or whatever reason.

What I WOULD like to see though is OT changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes. As Drew commented on during the Rangers game when the 4on4, if the NHL wanted much more dynamic and fast play they could change the entire game to 4on4 as the open ice does wonders for speed. I personally think it would be a detriment for the simple fact of all that speed tires players out fast. So it would be more dynamic and fast paced play, it wouldn’t be able to be sustained throughout the game.

Anyways, as I was saying, 5 minutes is a really short time, and with the amount of back and forth that usually happens in OT, there are usually numerous scoring chances. With the last minute being “OMG” crunch time defensively, the effective 4 minutes of back and forth can easily be eaten up with said back and forth. A full 1 minutes would cut down the amount of times the shootout happens by 70% at least.

I disagree about the whole clear winner.

Raised as a soccer player I personally have no problem with ties. Id rather have had the Vanc and NY game end tied. On those given nights these teams were equal when it came to playing hockey. Thats how it should end. The shootout does nothing to determine who is better at hockey.

FIFY. I think ;)

I’d advocate dropping the shootout. There’s just a cloud of illegitimacy that surrounds a win or a loss, not to mention the point inflation due to 3-point games. The SO wins not factoring into the regular Wins tiebreaker metric is a start, but either go to a 3-pt REG win/2-pt OTW/1-pt OTL system or just revert back to the old school. I hear retro’s in in hockey nowadays…

Open ice might tire out players more, but with 4 on 4, you have less players out there and can run more than 4 lines, so shifts become shorter and less in number. It would totally change the structure of the game. Teams would probably roll 7 or 8 defenseman and run at least 6 forward pairings.

I hate ties and I have no problem with the shootout in the regular season. However, I wouldn’t mind seeing IT extended to 10 minutes.

I don't really find the shootout to be that big a deal

I wouldn’t have felt that much different if the Sharks had come out of those two games with a tie, and at least the shootout allows the Sharks to have a chance to get that well earned W. And now that the Sharks actually have 4 or 5 bona fide shootout guys and a goalie that has great success in it, on the whole the Sharks are probably going to steal a few more points in the shootout this year than they are robbed of one.

On the other hand...

I don’t think the Sharks deserved to lose that game against Vancouver. We completely out played them in periods 2 & 3 and yet got the loss because of the shoot out? Very poor.

Think about the back to backs. That would be awful to play a full extra period of hockey at the 4 on 4 pace. I would much rather see the 4 on 4 then a 3 on 3 kind of deal

by Indiana Titan on Mar 14, 2011 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions

We have seen the Sharks play dominant hockey for entire games and not beat hot goaltenders. I fail to see how it was just a matter of time that the Sharks were going to win against Vancouver if OT was longer.

I certainly think the Sharks deserved to win against Vancouver. The fact that it was a 1 point “loss” verses what would have been a 1 point “tie” a few years ago changes nothing for me, while allowing the potential for a win if the Sharks would have won the shootout. This isn’t soccer where it’s a game of chance in the PK’s.

I dunno, its a small price to pay to have a winner/loser every night, and for many “newer” fans the shootout provides the one part of the game where they aren’t wondering why the whistle was blown when the puck was shot all the way down and why the goalie suddenly left his crease to go to the bench while the game was still going on.

So long as they keep the shoot out out of the playoffs, I can’t complain.

by ruben398 on Mar 14, 2011 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Ugh

I hate all the talk about having OT go from 4 on 4 to 3 on 3.

How the hell is that even supposed to work? They were talking about 4 minutes of 4 on 4 followed by 3 minutes of 3 on 3 or something, what do you do, stop play at the 4 min mark and take off a skater? That’s ridiculous.

I don’t even like the 4 on 4. If anything, make it 10 minutes of 5 on 5.

Not just scoring depth Chicago lost

But defensive depth. Chicago showed us last season, and Vancouver is showing us this season, and Detroit seems to show us every season, your forwards have to play solid D.

Chicago gave up so few shots last season, that it didn’t matter who was in net for them. They drove the play at the opposition.

Considering Niemi would have cost them $2.75M, Chicago absolutely made the right choice in letting Niemi go. And if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 1000 times: Antti Niemi in Teal bears little to no resemblance to the Antti Niemi who had the Indian Head on his chest. The work he’s put in with the coaching staff here has made him an entirely new netminder. There are still gaps in his game, but this is his first full season effectively. I think the circumstances of his departure from Chicago helped fuel a lot of the fire and improvement we’re seeing from Nemo right now. Who knows if he would have done the same in Chicago?

Their salary cap woes are our good fortune

Signing Hossa and Campbell to long-term deals made guys like Niemi expendable. It’s good for us and bad for them, but Crawford has been pretty good, Turco, no so good. Sometimes the best deals are the ones that don’t happen; Hjalmarsson being a case and point.

Hjalmarsson’s offer from DW was probably a good reason why we got Nemo.

Yea, Chicago’s problem isn’t really defense. While yes it has struggled a bit, I think that is more a matter of overall team defense, similar to how the Sharks were at the start of the season.

They lost half their depth in an instant, and all that depth was vastly underrated while on that team, as shown by the fact that half those 3rd/4th line players have bloomed into 1st/2nd liners on the other teams they were traded to, AND more importantly, have produced numbers on those lines.

Imagine we had to replace our 3rd and 4th line with all callups from the farm team, and of course there would be more shots on goal, etc. You couldn’t really blame our defense for it. Its not like those are the only 2 guys on the ice when the puck is brought into a team’s defensive zone.

Their own fault though, they shot themselves in the foot with the salary cap what it was/is in terms of future growth. If the cap does go up this offseason they’ll get a round of relief in terms of resigning their depth, but after that any other exceptional players that emerge from their system will either edge out other players with their contracts, or end up having to be let go.

In other words unless the cap continues to rise significantly, then Chicago’s depth never really has more than 2-3 seasons with them, so they’ll constantly be replaced.

by VVhirlwind on Mar 14, 2011 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

our problems aren’t offense, I think we’ve actually scored more this year than last. Our team defense has been pretty bad though. Team being the key word because our core blue liners are probably better right now than last year (the Campoli signing was a master stroke).

When it comes down to it, I’m just not that worried about this team not going deep in the playoffs. The team has been hot, and we’ve moved into 3rd or 4th in team +/-. The loss to Florida hurt, but that was one of the most impressive goalie victories I’ve ever seen. Losses to T.B. and D.C., on the road, in overtime are permisable considering the injuries we took into those games.

It would be very nice to finish off the season sweep tonight...

While it doesn’t cover for the Hawks’ sweep costing us a Stanley Cup last year, its at least a small measure of revenge…a nice feather in the cap, if you will. I’m sure Niemi would be pleased as well, but I’m still mad at him for costing us a Stanley Cup last season, so I don’t really care if he’s pleased or not (just please play well for us, dude…).

Anyways, with Dallas and LA right on our heels, we need all the points we can get. A win tonight, after a couple tough crapshoot losses would be very nice, indeed…

Hawks are collapsing 4 men to the net if we have the puck and then taking off the other way when we turn it over. I saw way too much of this in 8 games last season. I don’t need to see it again tonight.

I know the Hawks are finally healthy for the first time we’ve seen them this season, but holy crap, is the gap still this wide?

Considering that VS is the major TV network deal in the US

They’re responsible for all the revenue that goes into revenue sharing. It makes sense that they’ll cover the East. All the major markets are there. We’re struggling enough for ratings, and viewers on the East Coast aren’t going to tune in for Western Conference games.

I really don’t care about the East Coast bias. I’m all for taking their money in revenue sharing though.

Especially since Chicago is the local team, seeing San Jose really stick it to these guys is something I always crave as a sports fan.

I know the Sharks have beaten the Hawks this year in terms of a season series, but dammit, I don’t like them getting spanked on road ice versus a team they should have a little extra hate for, considering last May.

The worst part is

that vs. is supposed to be a national broadcast but for some reason the NHL likes to highlight a few teams with their national coverage and then scratch their heads when other markets can’t get a break.

So, not only was it the worst period since the Calgary game earlier this year, but we've seen the return of all our favorite classics:

Let’s see:

1. Wither when the opposing team brings any speed against you
2. Collapse under the pressure
3. Play your worst game in two months when you’re on Versus and everyone’s watching
4. We can’t leave out the pathetic PK which is slowly becoming a major concern

And let’s top it off with goaltending issues… I have no clue who the fuck will be in net tomorrow. Neither guy is inspiring much confidence in me right now.

I would say Versus deserves some of the harsh remarks though.

It does get irritating when a broadcast already has a pretty evident bias for the champs, has one of the their local people calling the game and shows commercials with the team’s captain.

Especially as a guy who took alot of ribbing from my local friends last summer, I want to see San Jose beat this guys handily every time they play.

It goes beyond being the “popular kid.” It’s years and years of undisguised east coast bias and borderline favoritism. This league shoves Toews and Crosby and Ovechkin down our throats and acts like talent doesn’t exist west of the Mississippi.

by Rhapsody in Teal on Mar 14, 2011 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

The media can talk about the east coast teams all they want.

All I care is if the Sharks bring it and win. Sadly, they are doing neither tonight. I actually prefer when the Sharks don’t get any attention. It’ll just paint an X on their backs and have the other fan bases bitching about us as they are about the Blackhaws, Caps and Penguins.

It’s going to take multiple cups over many years to change the country’s perception of west coast hockey. The Ducks won a cup and it was forgotten by everyone outside of Anaheim in the blink of an eye.

by Rhapsody in Teal on Mar 14, 2011 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Inside Anaheim too.

Nate woulda had that.

by MonochromeGarden on Mar 14, 2011 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

True but the Ducks won the cup then went one and done.

Lost in the semi finals then didn’t even quality for the playoffs last season. They need to win and stay highly competitive to gain the recognition. When Chicago was going through their slump earlier this season, I didn’t hear much media giving them much attention (even though they were the defending champs). It wasn’t until they started their winning streak and am fully back in the playoff race are the media falling over them again. Unless they go far in the playoffs this year and next year, I can see Chicago have the same fate as the Ducks in terms of media love (which is none).

Come out and show these hacks on versus what this team is capable of. The Hawks want to play hard? Jumbo and his team will play harder. They will fight in the corners! For all of you going "bawww, Versus/NBC/the NHL doesn't give us any attention"

Then make them give us attention.

Do you know where the majority of ratings come for nationally televised games on Versus and NBC? They come form New York. They come from Boston. They come from Philadelphia, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Chicago. They come from BUFFALO, for crying out loud! They don’t come San Jose, or Los Angeles, or Denver, or any other under-represented Western Conference market. We get Eastern time zone teams and stars shown in NHL marketing pushes because THEIR FANS ARE THE ONLY ONES WATCHING NATIONALLY TELEVISED GAMES IN SIGNIFICANT NUMBERS!

You want the Sharks to get more national attention? Then convince the rest of the Bay Area to start tuning in to hockey games. Tell them to stop spending the winter months calling in to KNBR to bitch and whine about the NFL loutout and to stop watching Giants 2010 World Series Navel Gazing and tune in to Sharks games on CSN California, or out-of-market games on Versus, NBC and Center Ice when the Sharks aren’t on.

Just because there is a healthy Sharks community here on SBN does not mean we are at all representative of the mainstream Bay Area sports fan, and unfortunately, the ratings for nationally televised games show that those Bay Area fans would rather watch football rumor and baseball reminiscing than hockey. Ratings speak volumes to the NHL and its TV partners about who cares about hockey, and unfortunately, ratings right now show that the Bay Area doesn’t care about hockey. So why should the league care about us?

Doing the NHL XTra thing showing other games on the CSN Networks is a start to showing the nation cares about hockey, or at least wants to shove it down everybody’s throats to make it more profitable now that CSN/NBC Universal are one and the same.

I would say they’re watching because those are THEIR teams being shown. And, more importantly, the games are shown early in the morning on NBC for the west coast. I doubt anything would get good ratings at 9:30 on a Sunday morning.

I'm going to chalk up tomorrow's game as a must win.

Playing Dallas, 2 crutial points at stake, need some confidence against that team too.

I think it's just overall team effort.

Not enough pressure on the Hawks in the offensive and defensive zone, played really sloppy D as well. Guess you have to have a bad loss to wake a team up…

I thought we already had one. Six of them, in fact. Perhaps, once a bad loss wakes this team up, they should stop going back to sleep.

by Rhapsody in Teal on Mar 14, 2011 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, they need to not fall asleep.

It’s frustrating watching this team play awesome one night, then fall apart a few nights later. I think they will come around tomorrow. I’m sure they’ll frustrated with the effort they put forth tonight, and want to make amends. They know they’re a better team, and they need to start playing that way

If they win tomorrow, all will be forgotten. The games within the division are what matter most anyways. I hope they do feel frustrated and kick the Stars’ ass (especially Steve Ott’s)

as frustrated as I am about this loss, It could be erased from my memory with a win over Dallas tomorrow. Ott’s face needs to be smashed (no more refs protecting him!)

The foot is definitely off the gas.

I think it was pretty much off on Saturday as well. And for all the years we have seen them get burned on cutesy plays, the vets are still doing it, especially on clearing attempts.

The good news is, I think we are done with the VS East Coast stroke for the year. Unless we get to the WCF again. But the foot has to go back down on the pedal again.

Think people

There was no context given, just the statement. Where’s the rest of his comments, stating what he was talking about, what was done by those, who prompted such a statement (or really, just a soundbite).
Ever been soundbitten before out of context?

Even out of context this sounds bad. I don’t know how this could be taken any other way. If it’s a joke, it’s certainly not funny.

Think for yourself everyone

I don’t know the full comment either, what I’m saying is get the full story before you judge the person. Just about anyone can take a partial quote from someone and make it completely mean something else. It’s things like this that people hear and believe, and remain sheeple.
The media does this all of the time, to slant against what the particular media is against, and to slant for whatever the media is for.
Prime examples of people believing partial statements are the “campaign promises”, which really aren’t promises committed-to by the candidates. A candidate will say things like, “We need to lower taxes”, and people will believe that the candidate said, “I will lower taxes”.
They all do it, listen closely, and think for yourself.

At worst, it was a Freudian slip revealing his true feelings. At best, it was a horrible, insensitive, uneducated joke. Either way, I don’t know that he deserves your benefit of the doubt. But you’re right, people should seek the context of everything other people say.

You got it
people should seek the context of everything other people say.

That’s my whole point.
Even our legal system has “innocent until proven guilty”, so people should get firsthand proof before judging another.

Here is a link to what happened in context

link

During a committee hearing, they were discussing

"The question being debated was how best to control the about 500 feral swine in Kansas. Presently in the budget for 2012 is $175,000 for the Department of Agriculture to continue to hunt herds of feral swine.

To which this person commented:

“Looks like to me, if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a (solution) to our illegal immigration problem.”

I love how politicians, every time they let their guard down and say something horrible, try to explain later that it was just a joke or that they were taken out of context. Classic.

as well as people believing what they want to hear, not what was being said.

His actual quote sounds awfully similar to

him “joking” about hunting illegal immigrants like feral hogs to as a “solution” to their immigration problem. I really don’t know how else you can hear what was being said.

I totally agree. For instance, when I heard the GOP was trying to pass legislature to prevent college students from voting, I was naturally skeptical. So, I went and did some research and read a few articles, and it turns out the State House Speaker in New Hampshire, William O’brien, really is trying to pass legislature to limit and even prevent students from voting in their college towns. You gotta dig to find the truth, because usually when you hear rumors, they’re not entirely true.
