Phoenix is one of those teams many don't take seriously around the NHL, and for the most part, it's easy to understand why. They've been mired in mediocrity (at best) for the vast majority of their time spent in the desert, don't possess the financial ability to spend to the salary cap limit, have struggled immensely with ownership issues, dealt with crippled attendance figures due to the fallout from that aforementioned inept ownership, and always seem to have that aura of inevitability when it comes to the nasty term "relocation".

As unfair as it may be, all of these factors tend to paint a picture of an organization that shouldn't be considered a legitimate threat. Which, in reality, couldn't be farther from the truth.

Heading into tonight's game against the Coyotes, the San Jose Sharks are in first place of the Pacific Division. They sit two points ahead of Phoenix with a game in hand, and hold the wins less shootout wins tiebreaker by one. Furthermore, San Jose has won all three games played against the Coyotes in regulation, meaning that if things were to progress to the third tiebreaker (greater number of points earned in games between the two clubs), San Jose would need just one more point against Phoenix (an overtime loss for example) to gain the edge in this situation.

The Sharks are clearly in the driver's seat here but, as we examined on Thursday, a whole lot can change in the matter of two weeks.

San Jose plays Phoenix three times down the stretch. A Coyotes regulation win puts the two team dead even in points, and although the Sharks would have a game in hand, San Jose's strength of schedule is the toughest in the Pacific down the stretch, meaning there aren't a whole lot of gimme games left on the docket. Phoenix's schedule isn't much easier of course (they have to play San Jose three times), but they benefit from a home heavy schedule that has them playing four games in the confines of Jobing.com Arena.

Star-divide

The point I'm trying to make here isn't that the Sharks are in dire straits-- for all intents and purposes they should win the Division, especially when one considers their roster is deeper and boasts more high-end talent than what the Coyotes have to offer. The point is that this game is an excellent opportunity for San Jose to make the road to their fourth straight Division title a whole lot easier. A regulation win tonight sets the stage where Phoenix probably has to win out and keep San Jose from acquiring any loser points in the last two games of the year in order to overtake the lead. A regulation loss means it's back to square one, or at least as close as you can get to it.

Ilya Bryzgalov likely starts in net tonight for the Yotes'. San Jose has handled him pretty well this season (7 G in 2 GP), but there's not a soul on this Earth who feels confident going up against him in a playoff series. Keith Yandle on the blueline and Shane Doan/Ray Whitney up front are the players who provide the bulk of Phoenix's scoring output. Outside of that the Coyotes don't really have a wealth of impact talent that can take over a game. I think you can make a case for Dave Tippet once again this year in regards to the Jack Adams award-- the fact that he's continued to deal with reduced payroll, immense off-ice distractions, and still put his team in position for a playoff run makes him as good of a candidate as any.

Also, if you're looking for an excellent two-way forward who flies under the radar, watch Martin Hanzal tonight. He's had some really good battles with Joe Thornton over the years and has the ability to set the tone of the game by taking out whatever line he is matched up against.

As for San Jose, Marc-Edouard Vlasic was a scratch on Thursday night due to some minor bumps and bruises. No telling whether or not he'll be in tonight. Kent Huskins and Scott Nichol are unlikely to play.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Thornton, Couture, and Demers.

Hanzal

Luckily for Thornton, I don’t think Hanzal is playing tonight. He’s been out w/ a ‘lower body injury’ for a few games now.

Jovo has also been out but is expected back sometime very, very soon – hopefully not tonight though.

Phoenix is still a team that makes me nervous for the playoffs, despite how things have gone for us against them so far. It’s hard to bet against Bryzgalov in a big game and the Coyotes have scorers. I don’t know if they have Cup depth, but I think they’ve got upset depth.

As for tonight, I’m hoping the guys bring all they’ve got. They need to lock up a playoff spot to get some breathing room to be able to rest a player or two. And putting themselves another game close to winning the division can only be a good thing.

Only thing i’m really worried about for tonight is our previous success against Phoenix has been earlier in the season when they weren’t super hot. Right now they’re on a tear, 8-1-1 in their last 10 (compared to our 5-2-3). That momentum combined with a bit of a chip on their shoulders could lead to a crazy explosive first period from them that I can only hope the Sharks are prepared to meet.

I must say though i’m extremely glad we’re facing them now instead of the next scheduled game. Sharks historically have played like shit after a 3+ day layoff, so the next 3 day break between the next game against Dallas is worrisome but its not as crucial given their standings place than the Phoenix game.

My guess is TMac rolls with Niemi tonight. Hopefully Nitty can get the next two games and one of the games in the home and home against Phoenix…. Or one the next two games… Or one game… or anything at all….please?

Antti Niemi was the first goaltender off the ice this morning. So expect to see him make his 31st consecutive start

“This is from the latest WTC.”http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2011/03/26/vlasic-likely-back-against-phoenix/ I’m definitely not surprised by these decisions anymore, but I still vehemently disagree.

Personally, I’m more worked up over the fact that Vlasic is back, but really disappointed that Braun is sitting for Wallin. Wally looked like ass against LA.

SERIOUSLY?

TMAC Fail.

Do the coaches see something in Wallin that I don’t? Because all I see is shitty play and a vastly overpaid salary. Pisses me off.

I love Dany Heatley for his fantastic acting chops and his permanently dilated pupil.

by HeatersLeadingLady on Mar 26, 2011 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I only agree with the overpaid part.

Yes he makes mistakes, but he is also a pretty solid 3rd pairing defenseman – just not for what he’s being paid. In the playoffs, I’d rather have his experience and skill on the 3rd pairing than Braun. (note: I like Braun and he seems to be promising, but for the cup run, I’d prefer Wallin in certain situations over him.)

Go Sharks!

I'm the same with the Niemi situation.

I really wish Mac would get a spine and tell the goalie he needs to rest.
Nabby was his best the playoffs when he played 55-65 in a season, but we often wore him out.
I really hope this won’t happen to Niemi.

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
Good job Giants, now win 3 more world series titles and then you just might be worthy of being mentioned in the same league as the A's.

Not that I'm using it to justify him playing tonight...

But if Niemi plays every game left, he’s only going to be at 61 games total. He’s just about middle of the pack for number 1 goalies in terms of starts.

Nitty needs to play to not be rusty, but I’m not at all worried about Niemi being worn out. Right or wrong of it disregarded, I’m guessing McLellan’s logic is that Niemi has to play until we’ve got things locked up. The team hasn’t done that yet (again, regardless of if that’s realistic) and so Nitty stays shelved.

by Auth0r on Mar 26, 2011 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, i’ve been saying the same for the last while. Niemi doesn’t need the rest. But Nitty DOES need some opportunity to shake off rust.

Wow, big blow for L.A.

Kopitar broke his right ankle this afternoon: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2011/03/kings-anze-kopitar-jonathan-quick-ryan-smyth-trevor-lewis-nhl.html

This, not long after the Justin Williams injury. Pretty good chance that they still make the playoffs, but it’ll be a tough road to get out of the first round at this rate.

Although...

The Penguins have fared quite well without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin solely on solid defense and good goaltending.

I still think the Kings will struggle to make a deep playoff run, but even without their leading scorer they’ll still be a tough match up. That’s a huge loss nonetheless.

by Bearodactyls on Mar 26, 2011 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats a rather large loss, especially losing him in a game against a non-contender. Looking at the video of it made me cringe, his skate toe caught on the ice in the twist and just yikes.

About the Pens, you have to remember though that they play a much more physical style of game, not to mention have much more forward depth than the Kings do. I personally think that if the Kings still make the playoffs it’ll be in the lower 7-8 seed than the higher one they’re currently at. I’m not sure they’ll make it past the first round considering the currently level of skill in the West teams.

by VVhirlwind on Mar 26, 2011 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Just said this at BoC

Not sure there is a more important forward in the West to their team than Anze is to the Kings. That is a brutal loss for the Kings, and a likely fortunate swing for whatever team plays them in the first round.

by ruben398 on Mar 26, 2011 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions

If I recall correctly though

The Pens had stretches of rough patches in adapting without their star forwards. Tyler Kennedy stepped up for one. But the difference is that Pittsburgh had the “luxury” of suffering these injuries much earlier in the season. Here LA has similarly suffered 2 significant injuries, but it’s only a few weeks removed from the beginning of the playoffs. Add the fact that their berth isn’t even guaranteed, I’d be really worried if I was in that locker room right now.
