Contenders and Pretenders: Sharks dominate in the desert
For the 4th time this season and the 8th game in a row the San Jose Sharks beat the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com arena in Glendale Arizona.
Logan Couture scored twice tonight to lead the Sharks and added an assist on Ryan Clowe's goal. Joe Pavelski scored the Sharks second which turned out to be the game winner. Assisting on Pavelski's 18th of the season were Thornton and Mayers at 3:35 of the second period.
It was all San Jose tonight in the desert. Unlike other teams the Sharks have the ability to consistently find a way to beat the Coyotes net-minder Ilya Bryzgalaov. So far this season they have shelled the Coyotes scoring 17 goals in four games while giving up 7. To say that the Sharks have their number would be an understatement.
Logan Couture - is tonight's first contender for scoring two goals and an assist. The Sharks rookie has smashed the organization's previous rookie scoring record held by Pat Falloon with 25. Couture score his 29th and 30th goals of the season and continues his quest for the Calder Trophy awarded to the top rookie in the league. The 21 year old's game has been consistent from day one and his importance to the team was described by coach McLellan after the game
"He's a catalyst for our team, we feel comfortable playing him in any situation with any players. For him to get to thirty is a hell of a reward for a heck of a good season to this point. He's also had some good help Clowey has ridden shot gun withhim all year, and I think they have benefited from being around each other."
Ryan Clowe - was without a doubt a contender tonight and has been a rock all year long for team teal. Tonight Clowe demonstrated how valuable he is to his team mates by dropping the gloves and squaring off with the Coyotes heavy weight Paul Bissonnette. Bissonnette was trying to get Marc-Eduoard Vlasic to dance, but found himself with a much tougher opponent in Clowe. Clowe recorded an unofficial stat referred to as the Gordie Howe hat-trick which consists of a goal, an assist, and a fight.
It is important for players to know that their team mates have their back and Ryan Clowe has sent word around the NHL that if you want to a piece of the skilled players on the ice you will have to answer to the 6'2, 225 pound Newfoundlander. The luxury that the Sharks' coaching staff have is that this kind of player is typically a liability in other aspects of the game. On the other hand Ryan Clowe does so many things well for this team. He works the boards as well as any power forward, he scores goals, he has become a vocal leader in the room, and has also proved to be very durable for his style of play. When the skilled players know that a guy like Clowe has their back it gives them a world of confidence. Simply put Ryan Clowe makes the other Sharks better just by being in the line-up.
Antti Niemi- continues to excel regardless of his work load. In Niemi's 31st start in a row he stopped 25 shots and had no chance on the Coyotes only goal. He wasn't tested often, but when he was, he came up big. He robbed Yandle after he snuck in from the point with a blocker save that would have tied the game and may have changed the momentum. Niemi's lateral movement was impressive all night long and was a factor on his most difficult saves. With a four day break until the Sharks play again we should expect to see Niemi get the start on Thursday against the visiting Dallas Stars.
Jason Demers- has quietly evolved his game and learned to pick his spots for carrying the puck. Tonight Demers carried the play into the offensive zone with great efficiency earning honorable mention on the contenders list. This second year 7th round draft pick only leads the team in plus/minus category at plus 14 and as a result of his improving puck handling skills has taken some pressure off of Dan Boyle. He has earned the trust from his team mates and will be a key player if the Sharks are going to make a deep playoff run.
Ilya Bryzgalov- was awful tonight and has been all year long against San Jose earning tonight's pretender. He is the Coyotes team MVP and will be considered for the Vezina Trophy. Bryzgalov made some good saves but the soft goals scored by Clowe and Couture's second of the game earned him top honors. Flat out he can't like playing against the Sharks. The Coyotes are one of three teams in the league that don't have a 20 goal scorer so they depend on stellar goal-tending, and when they get it they usually win.
The Phoenix Coyotes - as a team earned the title of pretenders. This was a game that could have moved them into first place in the division, they had lost 7 straight dating back to last year and three in a row this year against the Sharks and they showed no life. Clearly there was a lack of effort on the part of the Coyotes, and this time of year that is not only embarrassing but unacceptable.
Mikkel Boedker tallied the lone marker for Phoenix after a fortuitous bounce.
San Jose should be so lucky to find themselves facing off against the Coyotes in the post season. Before that happens though they battle with the Dallas Stars on Thursday night at the Shark Tank. These two teams do not like one another and Dallas's desperation level should be at an all time high. On March 15th San Jose doubled up on the Stars 6-3 in Dallas which will be fresh in their minds as they face-off against one another for the final time this year unless they meet in the post season.
Keep your stick on the ice,
Cam Gore

Couture for Calder
shouldn’t even be up for debate. The other 2 top contenders, Skinner and Grabner, aren’t even close IMHO to the complete hockey player that is Cooch.
Just look at the side-by-side-by-side comparison:
Logan Couture: 73 GP, 30G, 23A = (53pts), +19, 55 hits, 61 blks, 8 PPG, 8 GWG
Jeff Skinner: 75 GP, 26G, 28A = (54pts), -1, 66 hits, 26 blks, 6 PPG, 2 GWG
Michael Grabner: 72 GP, 31G, 17A = (48pts), +16, 22 hits, 24 blks,1PPG, 3GWG
It’s pretty much a wash in terms of point production, but Couture is just head and shoulders above both in terms of blocked shots, game winners, TOI, and faceoffs. There are almost no measurable stats where either Skinner of Grabner significantly outperform Couture.
Grabner might be a better penalty killer and has 5 shorties (Skinner by comparison does not kill penalties at ALL), but Couture avgs 18min in TOI/G, while Grabner plays only 15mins TOI/G.
Oh…and neither Skinner nor Grabner are on playoff teams (unless Carolina does something special in the last few games).
I just can’t see any way either of those guys get the Calder over Couture.
I hope the East Coasters
thoroughly go through these stats as you did, and drop their bias, as Cooch really is the leader of the rookie pack.
If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

Sadly, with East Coast bias...
Skinner has a better chance of getting the Calder only because they will look at points, see they are practically even, and then give it to Skinner cause he is younger.
Randy Hahn - "The Man With The Big Butt - Patrick Marleau - we like him and we cannot lie..."
Unfortunately East-Coast and age biases are against him. I think he’s the best, but it’ll all come down to if the voters can look past their own issues.
As I said at the pizza party, though, if he loses the Calder and wins the Conn Smythe or the Hart down the road, I’ll be fine with it.

My only disagreement would be TOI
having more TOI and only comparable stats is a mark for the other players, they’re making more with less.
Still, I’m with Couture as the top rookie, his overall game is much better than either of the other two and he’s still up there in points.

Maybe, but...
I still think playing 18mins/G on a championship contender is more impressive than 15mins/G on a bottom dweller.
Couture also plays Center
which is a tougher position than winger, and Cooch win 53% of his draws (2nd among rookies with a min of 500 draws and leads all rookies in # of draws taken by a silly margin). Skinner plays center occasionally, but has taken something like 500 fewer draws than Cooch and is only around 36% effective.
Skinner also doesn’t kill penalties. At ALL. He’s got less than 3 minutes of TOI all SEASON on the kill. Both Cooch and Grabner avg. over a minute of penalty kill TOI per GAME.
Sorry for the double post…but this debate gets me fired up! =]
Okay … briefly read this … good excuse tho, just got home and not in tip top reading condition.
but great win! thank you Sharks!! and was great fun hanging out with those at FTF Pizza night. thanks PNK for putting this together. :)
GO SHARKS!

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!
The thing with Ryan Clowe for me is, he is such a good forward, that I get uncomfortable when he gets into a fight. I’m torn between the need to stick up for teamates, and the need to score goals.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
Good job Giants, now win 3 more world series titles and then you just might be worthy of being mentioned in the same league as the A's.

I’d say last night’s fight is a perfect example of a good time for him to fight. Vlasic would get destroyed by BizNasty and Pickles had been getting harassed all night. With the lead, not a lot of time left, and Vlasic in need of some backup, Clowe made the right call.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
I agree completely.
Clowe is not exactly our defense specialist, so with 3 minutes left and us up by 3, he picked a perfect time to fight. Good choice. GO SHARKS!
Go Sharks!
Generally speaking, the guys Clowe ends up scrapping with aren’t as valuable to their teams as Ryane is to his. Losing five minutes of BizNasty doesn’t cost the sparkledogs much; the guy spends more time in the penalty box than on the ice. Happily, Ryane has been pretty smart about who he’s fighting and when.
Sharks, 76 Games down, 1/2 dozen to go
This game was fun to watch, as it was a bit more relaxing from a fan point of view. Fewer heart-attack-inducing / edge-of-seat moments to stress over.
Sharks have 44 wins with 6 games left. Have to win them all to give TMC a couple of records. Will they do it?
Cooch seems to score a goal whenever I come in late to view a game that has already started. Have to make that an habit ;-)
On other teams’ notes, it felt so good to take Dal.’s playoff “M#” away and replace it with a “T#”.
Sharks Magic Number to win the Pacific Division = 5
It’ll take the Kings losing to lower this number during the Sharks days-off.
Sharks Magic Number to clinch a playoff spot = 3
Several factors can lower this number during the Sharks days-off.
Sharks, game 76 2010-11: 4-1 Win
game 76 2009-10: 4-3 Win
game 76 2008-09: 2-1 Win
Sharks, at 76 games, 2010-11: 44 – 23 – 9 / 97 pts.
at 76 games, 2009-10: 47 –19 – 10 / 104 pts.
at 76 games, 2008-09: 50 –15 –11 / 111 pts.
Next 6 games, games 77 – 82 2009-10: 4 – 1 – 1
going: L, W, OTL, W, W, SOW
games 77 – 82 2008-09: 3 – 3 – 0
going: W, L, W, SOW, L, L
Sharkstistics have been updated.
NHL Magic & Tragic Numbers have also been updated. I have since found a couple of M & T errors. I have fixed them on my charts; they’ll show up in the next update.
Sharks, get TMC those records, get Cooch the Calder, and get yourselves the Cup! Play the last 6 games as you did this one, showing that you really want to win it all, and keep us Sharks fans (and your bosses) happy!
You can do it! Keep winning, Sharks!

Off topic from the discussion in this thread, but still very much playoffs related...
The Canucks lost Hamhuis to a concussion tonight. One Vancouver newspaper speculated that the concussion he got earlier in the season from Getzlaf and this one might push him toward retirement based off comments he’s made in the past about wanting a certain quality of life post-hockey.
He got crunched while trying to hit Rick Nash at the same time as Bieksa was trying to. They all collided and Hamhuis slammed his head on the ice. He was taken off the ice under the new rule and didn’t come back.

Ouch
That’s a HUGE blow to Vancouver’s Cup aspirations. Hamhuis plays on their shutdown pairing, as well as their PP if memory serves. Having him I think has really freed up Ehrhoff and Bieksa to play the roles their comfortable with, while also keeping down the minutes on guys like Alberts. They’re really going to have to lean heavily on Edler now. Probably the biggest test of his career thus far. Couple this with the loss of Malhotra, and that strong team D the Canucks thrive on looks to be dropping a few notches.
The West suddenly looks to be wide open once again.
GO SHARKS!

How come no one is replying to me?!

Edler
I think Edler has just started some light skating – he had back surgery and is not expected back before the playoffs, although they may try to “hurry” up his recovery if Hamhuis’ concussion is serious/season ending.
But they do still have Salo and Bieska to run point on the PP along w/ Ehrhoff. They’re so far ahead of the pack right now that they can just continue to coast on into the playoffs (they have a stupid easy schedule the rest of the way) and hope that they can get Edler back, maybe Hamhuis too, for the playoffs and then turn it on when it matters. I guess we’ll find out if they’re capable of doing that ’cus we all saw what happened when the Sharks tried that.
