Joe Pavelski does it again, leading the Sharks to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Kings

Photo

At this point in Joe Pavelski's postseason career, a simple cut and paste job from last year seems pertinent considering the circumstances.

So we start today where we always seem to end-- looking back at yet another huge performance from the Sharks twenty six year old center, a player who has established a flair for the dramatic in the best possible way.

Joe Pavelski may have been the most important player during the Sharks march to the 2010 Western Conference Finals.

In fact, he just might have saved San Jose's season.

With forty seconds remaining in game two, and the Sharks already down 1-0 in the series following a heartbreaking loss the night before that saw a puck careen off Rob Blake's skate past Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose entered the zone trailing by a goal and desperate to score. And while dropping the first two games at home may have not been the death knell for a team as talented as the Sharks, the recent history of a 2009 postseason loss to Anaheim would have threatened to tear apart the delicate fabric holding together the city's collective psyche.

Fortunately, Pavelski didn't let it get that far. Joe Thornton found Dany Heatley between the circles, and after Craig Anderson made a marvelous save in-tight on the Canadian sniper, Pavelski quickly jumped on the rebound and rifled the shot into the back of the net to send HP Pavilion into a frenzy. The comeback would be complete later that night with an overtime goal by Devin Setoguchi, but no score rang louder during the entire Sharks postseason than Pavelski's in the dying seconds of that game two.

As it turns out, he was just getting started.

From a game four winner against Colorado in overtime, to back to back two-goal affairs against the Detroit Red Wings that led to a 2-0 series lead the Sharks would never surrender, Pavelski ended his 2010 postseason with 9 goals, 8 assists, 17 points, a +6, and 3 game-winners. He led the team in four out of those five categories (Boyle taking the assist crown with 12), and was a monumental influence in all assets of the game.

>> Fear The Fin

This postseason? As it turns out, he may just be getting started once again.

Pavelski continued his postseason heroics tonight at HP Pavilion, scoring the game winner at 14:44 of overtime to give San Jose its first game one quarterfinals win in four seasons. At the end of his shift, and struggling to make his way down the ice, Kyle Wellwood pulled up just above the circles and found Pavelski streaking towards the net. A backchecking Alec Martinez couldn't quite catch up to disrupt the play, and Pavelski made his forehand count beating Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick glove side to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

"We would have liked not to have it be in overtime, but Pavelski is a tremendous player for us," Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan said. "We count on him for so many different situations. He is very recognized at this time of the year for someone who elevates their game."

Pavelski's line, which includes wingers Kyle Wellwood and Torrey Mitchell, continued where they left off at the end of the season, consistently putting up scoring chances throughout the night. Wellwood in particular had a strong outing, driving to the net consistently and getting a few scoring chances of his own that Quick managed to stop.

Star-divide

San Jose came out of the gates early, as Dany Heatley opened the scoring by punching a rebound generated by Ryane Clowe past Quick a mere 28 seconds into the first period. It was the quickest opening goal in the playoffs in franchise history, and San Jose took that early momentum and ran with it in the first period. The Sharks outshot the Kings 14-3 in the opening frame, peppering Quick with opportunities at every turn.

The Sharks blueline was also peppered, as Kings winger Jarret Stoll took a run at Ian White along the boards, driving his head into the glass and knocking White out of the game. San Jose would skate with five defenseman the rest of the night.

"The start tonight was certainly not what you want," Kings Head Coach Terry Murray said following the game. "You know it's going to come out fast. It's going to be hectic in the first ten minutes and they end up getting that quick goal."

The second period was a different affair however, as Los Angeles would turn the tides and mount some pressure of their own. With the Sharks on the penalty kill, Logan Couture came down the ice on the rush and fired the puck wide of the net. As it rimmed around the boards, and the over aggressive Sharks penalty killers tried desperately to get back into proper defensive position, the Kings saw a 2 on 1 opportunity present itself. Justin Williams found Dustin Brown across the ice and Brown hammered home a blistering one-timer that beat Niemi and knotted the game up at two.

Couture would amend for his mistake three minutes later however. As opposing defenseman and childhood friend Drew Doughty came across the zone to deliver a hip check, Couture found just enough space to squeeze by and attack the net. As Doughty slammed into the boards Couture saw an opening in Quick's pads and managed to slip the puck past the goal line to give San Jose a 2-1 lead.

"That was a big goal for us, and after the mistake on the first one (Brown's goal), I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to get one back on my very next shift," Couture said. "We had flurries in their end, they had flurries in our end, and that's the way this series is going to go."

Los Angeles would respond, as Justin Williams scored at 16:20 in the second. Douglas Murray attempted to clear the puck around the boards but a forechecking Ryan Smyth got a piece of it with what looked like his skate, shooting the puck out to the weak side. With Niemi reading the play and coming across his crease, Williams picked up the puck and had an easy dunk in to put the Kings back into tied game territory.

As expected, game one was a brutal affair. Both teams combined for 79 hits, there was a large amount of post-whistle scrums, and the puck battles along the boards were intense. The rest of the series is expected to be much of the same, and for good reason-- the fact that both teams are Pacific Division rivals means both coaching staffs are aware of the opposing team's players in and out. If the Sharks are going to continue to win these types of outings, puck pressure is essential-- while is entirely possible that the fact the Sharks were skating with five defenseman contributed to this factor, San Jose's blueline did not pressure the Kings enough as they entered the zone. It allowed Los Angeles to create numerous opportunities off their low cycle, an enormous asset to their game that paid dividends as the game wore along.

All in all it was an excellent win for the Sharks, who for the first time in four seasons made their quarterfinals home-ice advantage in game one count. The necessary response to Los Angeles' physicality was there, and although the second period bore witness to a dominating Kings performance, credit goes to Niemi for keeping San Jose in it.

With both goaltenders putting up solid performances, and the bad blood already beginning to brew, a series that many expected to be a quick jaunt through the first round has turned into something a war. San Jose won the first battle tonight, but as the Kings proved, the path to the second round won't be as easy as seeing the lack of Anze Kopitar in the lineup and writing this one off. The Kings are an extremely dangerous team, one that clearly has taken that junkyard dog mentality and spread it around the entire locker room.

The fat lady hasn't even woken up yet. She's scared to come out of the house in fact, what with all of the bodies flying around down at rinkside.

That is, at least until a certain 26 year old center hit the ice for a shift in overtime. Once she sees Pavelski flying down the wing, she might start warming up the pipes.

Few Thoughts

The closest game that I remember to this one (playoffs wise) was Game 1 against St Louis in ‘04. The game was pretty slow and the Sharks ended up winning 1-0 in OT on a Niko Dimitrakos?!? goal. Since that was the best playoff season the team ever had, maybe that’s a good omen.

Game 1 winners take the series 70% percent of the time, or something close to that, but I think the series winning percentage for Game 1 OT winners is like 95%.

As per the Kings, they added a new wrinkle that I caught onto in the third. There was a lot of talk about Colorado’s 1-2-2 trap last year and how the Kings series could mirror it. From what I could tell, the Kings have switched to a collapsing 2-1-2 trap, the key piece being the center. He ends up sweeping back through the zone with speed to pick up loose pucks once the defense pins the wings in the corners. It worked very well in transition tonight.

The best ideas I have at the moment to counter that would be to either 1) dump the puck to the end boards rather than the side boards or 2) shoot the puck hard on net. This would get the center to stop and start rather than glide through the zone. McLellan has a little work to do here.

Please don't eat the unicorn.

The space between Couture’s goal and the last 8 or so of the third wasn’t pretty, but the Sharks decided they should stop assuming the Kings would roll over and got it done. Now they need to keep that sense and repeat it in game 2.

Wow, I’m a bit strung out by that experience and it was only Game 1, my nerves are gonna be shredded by the time this is all over.

I’m gonna have to work from home today, for two reasons:

1. Because OT means very little sleep and I fear I might need a nap at some point this afternoon.
2. So I can wear my Couch Tarts Big Pavelski t-shirt today in tribute to Captain Clutch.

Anyways—I’ve now predicted a Sharks’ series win. Why? Because the LA fanbase on Yahewww looks like the Blues when they are down in the third period and giving up on the actual game: all they do is pick fights. hehe. To be fair, this isn’t just the Blues. When teams start to lose hope, they often will pick fights out of frustration. Then, AFTER THE GAME, she was watching Chelsea Lately and I was trying to tell her something and she did the exact same thing because she wanted to hear whatever they were talking about. I thought that got me off the hook quite nicely.

Sharks Nation will explode with rage. Not to mention all the hockey media talking heads. This is exactly the thing that the league is trying to get rid of for exactly this reason. The refs may have missed it, but video will damn him to 2 games, I’m hoping. Hit from behind, lead with the elbow, and the injury…Question is, who do the Sharks dress if White is out? I have to say, I’m still not too worried. Their goals came from major MAJOR errors combined with bad bounces. There was only one or two crazy saves, the rest were just good or normal.

It wasn’t the Kings that changed their game in the 2nd and 3rd, it was the Sharks that dipped. They got away from what they were doing in the 1st a little bit, which allowed the Kings’ plan of neutral zone disruption to rattle the Sharks even further. If the Sharks played the same way they did in the 1st, it would have been a different game.

Come the 2nd, the Sharks simply stopped executing because players slowed up, which allowed Kings players to intercept passing lanes which then in turn caused poor chip plays that didn’t get deep and very poor if any tape to tape passes.

I attribute it to they went into the 1st with an adrenaline high, came out blasting, and then in the 1st intermission, coming down off that high the nerves started. An example i’m familiar with is if you haven’t ridden a bike in a while, and then you go out on one. At the start it takes some effort (warmup & pregame skate) but then after a bit you get warmed up and you barely notice it anymore, you can pedal for a while without noticing anything. Then you get home and put it away and sit on the couch to cool down. After that you get up and try to do anything like walk up stairs, and your legs are rubber.

I think something like that happened, so they fell from their high and were just flat out jittery in the 2nd, which led to a confidence drop which led to worse play etc.

I think they’ll come out stronger in the 2nd game. Much stronger.

by VVhirlwind on Apr 15, 2011 6:31 AM PDT reply actions

To be fair to the Sharks.

The second period is the long change, it’s harder to get off the ice. They lost White early on in that period and had to conserve energy on the back end as much as possible. That meant the D wouldn’t pinch in to keep plays alive nearly as much. As soon as the play got deep they’d go off for a change. You can see it on all of the Kings breakouts after the injury, there were fresh D coming off the bench instead of playing the points.

That’s why there was a major change in Sharks play, the D couldn’t be aggressive anymore if they wanted to stay as fresh as possible.

The Stoll hit is what gave the Kings life.

Good win... but

I was excited to see SJ win; however, that’s not what kept me up afterwards. I was SO PISSED at the terrible reffing during this game. It made me actually want to have some political power to put pressure on the Commissioner and the league to get their heads out of their butts. Maybe it’s just me, being a fan, but I felt the refs were being paid off. As a fan of an expansion team, I’m used to calls not going our way but last night was ridiculous. The call against Clowe was terrible – a push for 2 mins. The non call for White sent my blood boiling – it should have been a game misconduct. Didn’t anyone else feel that Jarret Stoll whisper some trash in White’s ear as he had him helplessly against the boards? If the league doesn’t respond, this series could get really ugly, fast… and it will honestly be their fault. Sorry for the rant – not enough sleep and the teal blood turned black with anger!!

It's tough living in exile in Iowa after 22 years in the Bay Area. Two things help: 1. Watching Sharks hunt on ice and watching Hawks lose while eating a Chicago-dog.

The call against Clowe was the weakest playoff penalty call I’ve ever seen. And the Stoll non-call was abysmal. But I don’t see conspiracy, just ineptitude…which we see all the time in the regular season too.

100% correct!

I was just about to make the same GD complaint. The worst officiating I’ve seen in a long time. Not only the phantom call on Clowe and the obvious bording call on Stoll, but the Slash that broke Murray’s stick late in the game that almost cost the Sharks. I cannot understand why they were so bad and so inconsistant. It better improve for game 2 or things will get out of hand.

A couple of other things: Clowe showed excellent restraint not to fight that cement head Westgarth who’s listed at 6-5, 241. I’m guessing he’ll pick his spot in game 2 and drop the gloves if necessary (If someone is taking advantage of Cooch or Pavs). It was great to see Heatley contribute and for SJ to get off to a fast start, although I was concerned when they couldn’t put a second goal past Quick (he was excellent last night). Seto was flying around hitting anything that moved, keep it up! Wellwood was very solid and to think DW got him for a bag of peanuts.

Honestly, that game could have gone either way, as LA almost scored in the OT when Richardson flubbed a backhander when Niemi was down. But Pavs came through again and getting game 1 is so huge for confidence, momentum and hopefully a short series if we can dominate game 2 a little more.

Lastly, Jumbo looked really bad on face-offs last night, like it was painful to dig down for them. I kept thinking he was getting tossed out so Marleau would have a better chance. Keep up the persistance boys and let’s stick it to ’em in game 2. Sharks win 4-2. Marleau will get one also.

The Kings still don't scare me...

The two goals against they actually scored (which is a lot for them) were pretty fluky. I mean, sending 3 people on the rush and then missing the net on a shorthanded chance is pretty dumb (I blame whoever was the 3rd man in on that rush as I do Couture for missing the net on his shot)…the second goal was just a bad bounce and Niemi overanticipating where the puck was going to go. Those things happen…and the Sharks still won.

The Sharks, despite coming out the gate hot as blazes, stopped playing their game for a large chunk of the game, and basically let the listless Kings attack dictate play…which is terrible. They played back on their heels and did not look like the dangerous Sharks we have seen over the last few months…and the Sharks still won.

And after the vicious, predatory, dirty hit by Stoll on White, the Sharks had to play pretty much a full game of hockey with only 5 D men. They had to be tired…and they had to conserve energy and sit back a little more than you would like. For a position that is already a weakness for us against the Kings’ strong blueline, losing White for nearly 60 minutes of hockey was a crushing blow…and the Sharks still won.

Just imagine what will happen when the Sharks actually wake up, realize they are playing the Kings, and start dictating play like they should!

Those are all very good points

I was thinking this morning that all the focus has been on Quick and his ability to steal a game. I believe Niemi stole that game for the Sharks. Those two saves he had on what’s-his-face, one in the third and the other in OT basically saved the game for SJ. This was one of those games where we needed goaltending to bail us out, and it definitely did. Like you said, if the Sharks realize how dominant they can be against this team when they play their game, then I don’t expect the Kings being able to keep up for much longer.

by Chicago Shark on Apr 15, 2011 7:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Again

I know it sucks that the Sharks let up, but when you’re down a d-man that’s going to happen. Losing a D isn’t like losing a forward, where you have 3 extras that barely play anyway. The Sharks lost the ability to pinch and the few occasions where they got hemmed in their own zone really wore out the D.

I’d expect more play like the first period once we put Brauny in there.

Couldn’t play much worse than Wallin did last night…

Wallin had a solid 1st period IMO

He made some good plays defensively. Then it fell apart after that, just like for the rest of the team.

Damn Beer and Screwdrivers. I past out before the game winner.

At times we did look slow on D and LA looked like a better team. Time to pick it up.

It’s not a lie if you believe it.

Plank great writeup

But Brown’s goal tied it at one not two.

Win!

It’s the playoffs, and I’ve come to the realization that it honestly doesn’t matter how you win, as long as you get it. And that’s what the Sharks did last night. JFTC has a bit more belief now… though I’m honestly not sure why so many of them thought this was going to end in 5.

It was going to be a close series… this isn’t the freakin’ NBA after all. I had the Sharks in 6, but it could very well end earlier. I think it was a near 50/50 split in play. The Sharks seemed to struggle after that White hit. I think JFTC saw the injury as an “excuse”, which is what TMac apparently made it sound like, but it’s a serious hit to the team. It’s an offensively starved D-core as it is, but adding Braun (who I fully expect to play on Saturday) should make it interesting.

And while it’s easy to look at what the Sharks did wrong (as the higher seed), the Kings were far from great. When you set expectations that low… it’s easier to look good.

Almost had a heart attack

yawn First of all, GOOD MORNING SHARKS FANS! I didn’t get home from the Tank until around 11:40 last night and I had a 8:30 meeting this morning so I was up at 6:20 so please bear with me. :)

First off, the tank was rocking as the guys came out. Great job! I was a little dissapointed the rest of the game with how quiet it seemed for a playoff game but a co-worker of mine said it sounded loud on TV so maybe my hearing is just going out (at 25! At least I don’t have any gray hairs yet).

First period looked great. We dominated them the way I figured we would all game. Second period and most of the third except the last five minutes, really dissapointed me. The Sharks couldn’t pass to save their lives, they were scrambling, and it almost seemed like they were expecting the Ottawa Senators on the ice instead of the LA Kings. Very frustrating. Yes, the OFFICIATING was horrible (understatement) but the Sharks didn’t step up their game to overcome that either.

Then OT, I almost had a heart attack about 5 times as the Kings were shooting that puck left and right. Niemi came up big. Then the Big Pavelski… saves the day when he was running low on gas. Props to Wellwood and Clowe on that one too. They should get just as much credit for that win as Pavs. So overall, got the win result I wanted. I just hope the Sharks keep the pressure up ALL game on Saturday.

GO SHARKS!!!!!! See y’all Saturday.

Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...

GO SHARKS!

Sharks Late Night Confidential

Drew complains about room service tipping (cheapskate, typical Canadian), and is conflicted about his feelings of being in the backseat with two other men, since he only associates it with procreation and marriage. Randy going for some sort of Hugh Hefner/Jedi hybrid look. Brody Brazil trolling for p tang, as usual.
