It didn't take long for the physicality of the series to pick up, and for better or worse, it seemed as if Jarret Stoll's hit on Ian White was the turning point where Los Angeles seemed to truly understand that there best opportunity to stick with San Jose would be on the physical end of the docket. The Kings forecheck and low cycle caused a lot of issues for the Sharks in the as the game wore along, and you have to figure that's what LA will turn to yet again as they attempt to steal game two on the road.

Expect another tight-checking affair tonight, one filled with just as many hits and rough stuff in the corners as game one. It will be interesting to see how the officials manage tonight's game-- they let a lot go on both sides Thursday night, including Jason Demers' hit on Ryan Smyth that inspired Kings Head Coach Terry Murray to fire back at the League's disciplinary committee after Jarret Stoll was suspended for a game for his blindside hit on Ian White.

"But I want to say this: If Jarret Stoll gets suspended for that hit, then Demers’s is five times as severe a hit on Ryan Smyth than Jarret Stoll’s hit on Ian White.

"He (Demers) meets every criteria that you can read about from league memorandums," Murray continued. "Every coach, every player, every management, every owner knows about it. If you travel distance, you launch yourself two to three feet off the ice and throw an elbow at a person’s head, that is a suspension, a big-time suspension."

>> Working The Corners

Building your case to the officials via the media is a time-honored tradition in the NHL, one that probably gives playoff beards a run for their money in terms of perennial appearances. Murray definitely has a case here considering Demers did make contact with Smyth's head after leaving his feet to make the hit, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the officials keep a close eye on Demers' tonight considering his physical play throughout the course of game one.

Star-divide

As for San Jose's defensive situation, numerous outlets are reporting McLellan does not expect White to make an appearance in game two. While unofficial at this point, and we'll learn more following the morning skate, expect Justin Braun or Kent Huskins to be in tonight for San Jose. Considering Huskins has been out since February 22nd with an undisclosed injury, as well as the fact that Braun has been an excellent contributor this season for the Sharks, Braun seems the likely solution on the backend to replace White.

Braun's development this season took him from an outstanding offensive player with a tendency for turnovers in his first stint with the team to a much more well-rounded player when he re-joined the team in late February. Braun gives San Jose some offensive pop from the backend that can help ease the loss of White during the man advantage, and also brings with him an ability to move the puck up the ice with a good first pass and strong skating ability. The only concern will be how he will handle the Kings forecheck-- while Braun has made some great strides defensively this season, his play in his own zone does lend itself to turnovers from time to time.

During an early season matchup with Detroit on November 30th, Detroit Head Coach Mike Babcock had his players put the puck onto Braun's side every single time the Wings chipped the puck into the Sharks defensive zone. Expect Terry Murray to instruct his players to do the same tonight in order to test the twenty four year old defenseman who will (likely) be playing in his first NHL postseason game.

Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan has never been one to pay too much attention to line-matching throughout the postseason, and history has shown that he's content to go power for power even with the last change at home. The Kings managed to get the pairing of Drew Doughty-Willie Mitchell out against Marleau-Thornton-Setoguchi for the majority of the night, something that paid off dividends for Los Angeles-- although San Jose's top line didn't bleed very many shots in their own zone, they were contained for large portions of the night and had difficulty generating consistent scoring chances. The bulk of the Sharks' offensive opportunities came from lines centered by Couture and Pavelski.

If San Jose is going to take advantage of their superior scoring depth, it's imperative the top line manages to find a way to solve LA's top pairing. Mitchell had an excellent game one tasked against the Sharks big guns and showed just why he is one of the most dangerous and effective shutdown defenseman in the League.

If San Jose's top unit can crack their assignment early, things will fall into place all the way down the lineup. If not, San Jose could be in for another long night where a bounce here and there will dictate the outcome. Considering Jonathan Quick's 42 save performance in game one, the Kings control of the tempo for the majority of the second and third periods, and their superb commitment to team defense, a grind-em-out battle along the boards with the neutral zone clogged up like your toilet after a bad Thai meal doesn't play into the Sharks hands.

1 game... only.

i was hoping Stoll getting 2 games, but winning today would put Kings in a 2-0 hole, so the damage may have been done. I swear… if we lose this game… then WOW….

Two Points

I think losing White early in the game, changed the way the Sharks played. Losing a key defenseman is not like losing one of your top 6 forwards. Missing a forward can be hidden or almost hidden for a whole game, while a defenseman down is a glaring issue. Losing White meant they couldn’t push the pace as much, or exert the extra effort all the time in the other end. With 6 healthy defenseman, that shouldn’t be an issue this game. Just hope that the chemistry will be there for Braun and whoever he is paired with as trust/knowing what the other D is going to do is a huge part of the position.

I don’t think McClellan needs to worry about line matching. The top line should eventually be able to get things going against the top pairing. Also, by having them on against the top pairing, it opens up the ice for the other lines. Most other teams don’t have 3 great lines, and even a fourth line that can eat up some minutes so they are forced to play the matchup game. It is a huge advantage for the Sharks to have two other lines that can produce, and just roll out what McClellan wants.

Sharks will win,

as I mentioned before, if the Sharks show up and play the full 60 minutes. If the Sharks show up part time, and their dopplegangers show up the rest of the time, then it’s a toss-up. If the Sharks don’t show, but rather their dopplegangers play the whole game, then the Sharks most likely won’t get the W.
They’ve had to excorcise those dopplegangers before they went into that post-losing-streak run, and again after losing those games to Ana. and Phx. before their final victory over Phx.
To “step it up” is not enough. It is the same thing as “change”, all depends what the change is from and what it is to. Stepping-it-up as the Sharks, they’ll take it all the way to getting their names engraved on a big shiny metal Cup. Stepping-it-up just for step-it-up’s sake usually means they get into the scramble mode, which the Sharks don’t play well at all, and tend to lose control of the game(s).

Tax the Forwards or Dress 7 D?

I feel that McLellan needs to roll all four lines out more or just stick to 7 defenseman. Eager, Mayers, and Nichol saw roughly about 6 minutes of ice time on thursday, which is about 5 mins short considering the game was almost 4 periods long. He is going to burn out his top two lines with fatigue or injury. He has to put more trust into Eager, Nichol, and Mayers to eat up more ice time. Besides, does it always seem like the most unlikely players come up big in the playoffs?

The hard forechecking is what is going to wear out the Kings defense and create turnovers later in the game; the only hard forecheckers that saw more than 10 mins on ice were Setoguchi and Clowe. That is not going to cut it, this is going to be a grinding series and you need to have your best forecheckers out there for at least 10 mins a game.

If the coach isnt going to play all four lines then he absolutely needs to dress 7 D. McLellan can not keep this up much longer. I would feel much more comfortable if he goes with 7 D once Huskins is available, only if he is not going to roll all four forward lines out.

4th line

I agree that they really need to utilize the 4th line more. McLellan has always shortened his bench when the games are close but I thought having veterans like Eager, Nichol and Mayers would give him some confidence it putting them out there more, they are all good skaters and are all defensively responsible. Plus, they all seem to enjoy the physical aspect of the game which the team needs badly.

Hopefully he’ll start using them more or you’re right, the ‘top’ players are going to get worn out pretty quickly. Plus, I hate when they try to go w/ 7 d-men.

by milanahalek on Apr 16, 2011 8:11 AM PDT reply actions

They are the fourth line for a reason though. The difference in skill between them and the third line IS huge. It may not seem that way precisely because they are not on the ice all the time. Their greatest addition to the game is their physical aspect, and putting them out there to change the flow a bit. A team’s fourth line is never going to eat huge minutes, that just isn’t their role. Everybody shortens the bench when the game is close, the object is to win THAT game, you worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

by Wolf1327 on Apr 16, 2011 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions

The Kings had ONE forward w/ less that 15 minutes…the Sharks 4th line is no worse than the Kings 4th line. This Sharks team was built to be able to roll 4 lines, no reason Eager, Nichol and Mayers should play less than 10 minutes.

The way the Kings played game 1 is exactly how they had to play to win a 7 game series…hit the shit out of the Sharks D and rolling 4 lines. They had a whole lot more jump in the OT than the Sharks, I know why the Sharks D was a bit tired but OT games are very common in the Playoffs and McLellan needs to utilize the 4th line to make sure that the top guys being tired is not the reason we lose.

by milanahalek on Apr 16, 2011 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions

the Sharks 4th line is no worse than the Kings 4th line

Sure this might be true, but our first, second, and third lines are all better than the Kings’, with our first line clearly being better. This is our advantage and we should capitalize on this instead of limiting the time our top lines are on the ice.

by kiwi93 on Apr 16, 2011 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but

The relevant thing to think about isn’t isn’t the difference in strength of our 4th line and their 4th line, but the difference in strength between our 4th line and our 3rd line, compared to the difference in strength between their 4th line and their 3rd line.

by warning on Apr 16, 2011 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

That is the key point that is being missed. Don’t compare our fourth line to their fourth line. Shark’s 3rd line is simply amazing, so when they play against a teams 4th line it is a huge advantage for them. Look at the 3rd line, and then look at the 4th line, which one do you trust to put the puck in the net, and make the least amount of mistakes? That 3rd line is going to be the key to going far in the playoffs, the 4th line will play a role but is not nearly as skilled.

by Wolf1327 on Apr 16, 2011 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

well one thing you are leaving out of this is that we lost a defenseman for the night so we were down to 5. It’s easier to roll 4 lines in the playoffs when you have a full d corp. When you are having to double and triple shift guys and try to limit their shifts as much as possible to pick up the slack, you are going to have to rely on your forwards even more to do their share of defense. As great as Nichol and Mayers can be on the Penalty kill, You don’t want your fourth line to have to be stuck out their for long stretches in their own zone. especially if a d man getting more time than he should is stuck and can’t change. I would suspect that they will have more icetime tonight with a full Defense.

Don’t think many people mentioned it due to the Stoll/White controversy taking the brunt of the discussion, but Seto was a wrecking ball in Game 1. Hopefully that (and more) will wear down Willie Mitchell some in Game 2.

Expect the Kings to be Better Tonight

SJ won game 1 but in my mind LA succeeded in planting seeds of doubt that the Sharks will win the series. Coming off of a 6-1 shellacking by the Sharks two weeks earlier LA accomplished a lot even in the loss.. Thornton said it well after game 1, the Kings will be better in game 2 and the Sharks need to elevate their game too and snuff out any confidence LA may have that they can win.

First time posting here =)

I live a little over several miles away from San Jose. Good luck to the Sharks in Game 2 of the series!

I think the Sharks will have to step up to the effort they created since Game 1 of the series. If you checked out what happened at the Preds vs. Ducks series, Preds dominated the Ducks in Game 1 while the Ducks turned the tables around in Game 2. If the Sharks are to win this game, they must not let their guards down. The Kings will mostly likely put up a tougher fight in this game, so once again, I hope the Sharks step up to their effort as well. Go Sharks!

I don’t want him to rush back. As someone who has had two concussions, they are not something to play through IMO. Get one bad enough, or two close together and you can really mess with your long term health. Hockey players are known to play through injuries, but concussions are not something to take lightly.

Definitely a lesson the league (players, coaches, managers) should have learned after how it’s all gone with Crosby. Not sure even that has made it sink in—but playing through anything is just deeply ingrained in the culture of the game.

one more thing!

bobby ryan is going to have a disciplinary hearing this evening for stomping the skate of blum during game 2. last 2 players to commit this were pronger and chris simon. pronger received an 8-game suspension, while chris simon received something like 25 or 30 games, if my memory serves me right.

ryan’s is nowhere near the severity in my opinion, but granted how lengthy the other suspensions were and , my guess will be 2-3 games (regular season it would be 4-5), but probably 1

Detroit’s certainly playing well (not to mention getting a nice bit of officiating in this one), but Phoenix just looks totally discombobulated out there. Tough to say what their problem is, but they’ve looked pretty miserable in every aspect of the game.

As well as Detroit’s played, though, Vancouver has clearly been the most impressive team in these still-young playoffs. Just a really impressive performance in the first two against the Hawks. For some reason, I was thinking 5:40 … oh well. Either way, I’ve never ever had problems with allergies, so I can’t sympathize.

Apparently for some karmic reason though, I woke up with a very bad cold, so I’m confined to sitting inside and hoping somebody brings me soup. Preferably of the butternut squash variety.

Game over

4-3 Wings.

But look at the Yotes scoring. All 3 goals on the powerplay, all 3 goals involving just 3 players: Doan, Yandle, and Vrabata.

Thanks, starting to feel lucid again. With that comes the pain, though.

I should be feeling much better by Tuesday. Looking forward to it.

Did anyone see the Bobby Ryan foot-stomp on Geoffrion? What a punk. He should get a game for that. Is there something in the water in Anaheim?

A game? He should be out for the first round.

Yeah, that's pretty bad

Completely intentionally… Geoffrion may not have been injured, but injuries shouldn’t dictate whether there should be a suspension or not.

definitely called that one

the duck’s fan in my hall thinks that stoll shouldn’t have gotten suspended and that it was a good hit and white was “too pussy to take it like a man”, and doesnt think ryan should have gotten suspended. in fact, he’s incredibly butt-hurt about it.

im convinced all duck fans are idiots. if i hear “hey zach how many cups have the sharks won? how many have the ducks?” i might kill him haha

If hitting a guy from behind and using your arm to drive his head into the glass is okay according to your friends, then I, personally, am thankful your friends aren’t running the show in the NHL.

hoping that

the form/drive that led to the 6-1 win shows its head a bit tonight. :) Chemistry is a funny thing, but I believe a more dominant game is in the Sharks, waiting/trying to emerge. Go Sharks!

I think it was good to get an overtime win against the Kings, especially after the two OT losses this year, but yeah…

I hope someone else here is watching the PHI-BUF game

Sadly only available in the U.S. on Center Ice, but man, this game has by far been the best of all first round games. Insane scoring, rough-and-tumble play, and just pure intensity from both teams.

Can it be true?

Carlyle taking the high road—especially compared to Terry Murray?

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said he was a little surprised by the number of games but that it was tough to defend since Ryan did it. He said the Ducks will live with the NHL’s decision if that’s the price such an action deserves. But Carlyle defended his forward.

“That’s not Bobby Ryan’s style. This is a first-time offense if anything, and … I’m surprised. I didn’t even see it until after the game, was surprised to see what happened during the game. There’s no place for that,” Carlyle said.

DP has more on Ian White in an interview over at WTC
"I’ve been waiting so long to get out there and it felt good on the ice. I had a lot of energy," he said. "So it’s disappointing, but it’s fortunate that it’s not going to knock me out for the rest of the post-season and hopefully I’ll just miss this one game."

And on the dreaded “C” word?

"No, I haven’t suffered anything like that. It was pretty hard. I might have even snapped out of it for a little bit there," he said before mentioning how athletes in other sports — UFC included — get hit all the time and bounce back pretty quick.

He also talked to Stoll about the incident, saying:

"Obviously, 99 percent of the guys in the league don’t intentionally try to hurt anyone and I know he’s not one of those guys," he said. "Just kind of the wrong place at the wrong time for both of us.

"He got me square in the head with his forearm and I know he feels bad about it," the defenseman said. "I don’t hold anything against him."
