Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Thinking Positively

I'm sure you've seen the score of Saturday's game against the Kings.  It doesn't look pretty, nor did it feel pretty.  But is there really any reason to throw up the white flag, curse the team and kick over your statue of Kent Huskins.  No, there isn't (though, you may want to do something about that Kent Huskins statue).  Seeing the Sharks lose 4-0 is a painful, especially in the post-season.  But for some reason, I just can't bring myself to thinking this is the end.  Heck, the series is tied 1-1 (look at NHL.com, and see how many of the series are knotted at 1).  Why get riled up and frustrated from one bad game?  You may be thinking this is just like prior years, that the team is going to "choke" once again.  There is a chance that the Sharks can lose this series, but there is a more likely chance that they will overcome the adversity and move on to round two.

Throughout the regular season, this team has been through thick and thin.  The beginning of the year wasn't easy.  2 goal leads in the 3rd period turned into Overtime or regulation losses, goal tending wasn't at its strongest and the depth was shaky.  But  since that 6 game stumble in January, this team has learned to persevere.  Looking throughout the regular season, this team bounced back after a troubling loss.  I know its a different season, per se, but this team sure as heck knows what it feels like to recover from a loss.

The Sharks will look at themselves in the mirror and correct those mistakes.  There are 2 days of practice ahead until game 3 in LA.  This team will rebound strong, because thats all they know how to do.  Have faith, fellow Sharks fans, it isn't the end.  Its only just the beginning.  Be faithful and unwavering till the end, raise your heads up, and cheer this team on.  Thats all we can do at this point.

5 games left, its going to be one heck of a ride.

People get freaked out not because the Sharks lost and not even that they lost 4-0. They get freaked because of just how poorly overall the Sharks played, especially with the upcoming 2 days in between games. Not counting the throwaway Charging penalty in the last 30 seconds of the game by Murray, PPs were split 5 per team. Our 2nd best rated PP in the league went 0-5…….(0-7 if you count game 1 in too).

So of course people are worried and freaking out. If they played this bad at home just before an extended rest, how will they do later in the series? Why didn’t they come out of the gate breathing fire? Etc.

I don't see what there is to be freaked out about.

Ok, we lost. So what? We’re one hell of a road team. We invade, and then we conquer. I think that a game like this was good, and now that there’s a little longer of a break, the coaching staff can comeback and talk to the players about everything they messed up.

Also note: This past game will keep the Kings from studying our tape. That last game wasn’t a Sharks game, so the Kings won’t know what to expect next game. Gives us a little bit of an advantage if you look at it on a film standpoint.

I think being angry over last night's game is justifiable.

I know I was pissed. But I refuse to assume there’s a meltdown in the offing until it’s worse than an even series against a team we’ve played even with all season. All but two games this season with the Kings were one goal affairs and each team got to put a beating on the other once. I tend to think the Kings got to put their one beating of the playoffs on us last night. Time for us to return the favor.

Indeed.

I am really worried, however, since there were many similar problems in Game 1 as there were last night .We were just lucky to get away w/ an OT win…we should be happy the Sharks are going to LA tied 1-1 instead of being like Boston. I hope they do look in the mirror as you say and fix this shit. GO SHARKS!

Go Sharks!

No reason to panic

But indeed a reason to be upset. Last night was a disgrace as the Sharks took 2 steps back. Our penalty kill looked awful and our defense wasn’t taking away shooting lanes. We do have a reason to be upset but the series is far from over

"Don't panic,"

but don’t sit back and say that “this was a learning experience” or “the goals will come”, or such wishes. We heard enough of that during the WCFs last season.
There is nothing positive about such a loss. Wishes don’t win games. Hope doesn’t win games. Scoring more goals than the opponent and keeping the opponent from scoring is what wins games. Yes there are the little things that add up, so the Sharks have to just get their stuff together and start playing like the Sharks.

If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

If this series goes to 7

The Sharks will not, I repeat, will NOT win the cup. Of the last 32 teams to win their game 7 of the 1st round only 1 (’91 Penguins) has won the cup. Those numbers dont play in anyones favor.

Statistics like that are deceiving and useless and yet people use them all the time. It’s like when people say things like “the last time the San Jose Sharks were tied 1-1 in a playoff series was in 1993 and they lost in 5 games” when I could easily point out the flaw that none of the players on our 1993 team still even play in the NHL. History doesn’t mean much when the people involved in it are no longer around. Taking a series in seven does not mean we will not win the cup just because it hasn’t worked out historically for teams not even named the San Jose Sharks.

What you just described is called a correlation, not a causation. The cause of these teams not winning the cup is likely the same cause as them taking the 1st round in 7. It likely took them 7 games because they were not much better than there opponent and probably didn’t win the cup for not being that great either. They did not win the cup BECAUSE they won the 1st series in 7 they didn’t win because they weren’t that good which is also why it took them 7 games to get out of the first round.

I would agree that having it go to 7 would not show good signs but it doesn’t warrant statements like “they will not win the cup”. I think a coming out of a long series victorious could be the arduous test that the Sharks need to overcome to make the long run. Although I would prefer they finish them quickly

to be more clear

I’m not knocking on the idea that having the first series go to 7 is undesirable, because it is. I’m just not comfortable having a doomsday tone about it. Sorry if the way I first said it sounded douchey. A nicer way of saying it would be: “I agree going to game 7 would be bad, but it would not be the end of the world. Don’t let the statistics fool you”

I still believe and will continue to believe, period.

This is my 2nd year as a Sharks fan and my 2nd playoffs. When I was on the game day thread this past Saturday night seeing other Sharks fans (well folks I have never seen post before on the threads) start to rag on the Sharks loosing it really pissed me off. I mean, are those TRUE fans or ones that just jump on the band wagon at the last minute only to just jump off and trash the team for a bad game?! HELLO??? They have only played TWO games so far with the Kings!!! No one is perfect and I think that the Sharks know that they played not up to par, but I have seen them come from behind before and WIN. So until this series is officially over, I will continue to cheer on the Sharks, WIN OR LOOSE! And not jump off the band wagon and be all pissy about the team. LOL…. look at me, its the Nyquil talking! But, I will still support, till the very end!
GO SHARKS!!!! Beat them damn Booger Kings!!!!!

Yay for Catstoy!!! Wonderfully put. Just because we lost one doesn’t mean people should be screaming doom and gloom. it’s a tied series against a team that we have played well against this season. Yes, we drop a game or two, but that isn’t any reason to scream choke or losers.
Poop Rainbows for this team! GO SHARKS!

I enjoy your posts as well. I love the high spirit you have for the team and the game. So many forget the simple pleasures of hockey, and start to focus on only negative things. It’s great when you can sit down and enjoy the little things. The smiles on a players face after a good shift, a well executed pass even though it didn’t result in a goal, heck, I love a good blocked shot in front of the net. So many things to enjoy about the game that become clouded in what went wrong during that time.
I’ll stay positive with you. I’ve been following this team for year and I’ve always been the one in the family refusing to become doom and gloom because of how a game went.

Glad you held on to that love for the Sharks :)
I was raised on hockey. When I was around 3 or 4 was when the Sharks came into existence, and my dad and I were instantly hooked. He took me to the games even though every time I went I would cause havoc. First game I dumped popcorn on the guy in front of us and almost had my dad decked for that (He played Defense at the local rink, in my eyes he could have totally taken on the dude who was twice his size). I use to run up and down the stairs at the Cow Palace when he took me to those games. There weren’t many people during that time so it was really easy to get away with as a kid. I decided later on that this was the team I will forever root for, and so far have :)

Luckily no lol. There was a lot of screaming in my house. I was actually shocked after Seto’s goal. It sounded like my husband let out a war cry or something.
