Sharks triumph over Kings 6-3, take commanding 3-1 series lead home to San Jose

The San Jose Sharks continued right where they left off on Tuesday night, spanking the Kings 6-3 in front of a disappointed Staples Center crowd, giving themselves an opportunity to close out the series at home Saturday night.

Ryane Clowe had a pair, while Jason Demers, Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, and Torrey Mitchell all added tallies for the Sharks to give the team a nice spread of goals throughout their lineup.

The first period was a run and gun affair, with both teams trading chances early and often as Antti Niemi and Jonathan Quick did their best to rebound from the red light affair that populated most of game two. San Jose had a brilliant chance to do some damage midway through the frame as Dustin Brown and Matt Greene took back to back minor penalties, putting the Sharks on a 5 on 3 powerplay at 8:34 in the period. But despite some excellent movement off the puck, and a willingness to drive down low to the net and muscle up in front, Quick stood strong. Joe Pavelski received a centering feed from Joe Thornton that saw Quick make an excellent post to post save, and Dany Heatley was stymied as well when he got a clean look at the net between the circles. The Sharks would get another chance when Joe Thornton stripped the puck off of Drew Doughty as he exited the zone, setting up a two on one with Patrick Marleau. Thornton's cross ice feed would be for naught however, as Quick would lunge across his crease to snag the shot with a brilliant glove hand.

Los Angeles would counter attack following the kill, putting the pressure on Niemi for some consistent shifts in a row. Los Angeles would also receive a 5 on 3 power play later in the period, but much like Quick's brilliance in the Sharks offensive zone, Niemi was just as strong for the Sharks. A diving stop across his crease stood out as his most impressive stop, leaving the Sharks and Kings scoreless through twenty.

Just as we saw Tuesday night however the Gatorade in both locker rooms seemed to be spiked with a more potent blend of electrolytes during intermission, as both teams would come out and register a combined five goals between them.

San Jose would get on the board first. After a 3 on 2 opportunity was broken up, Clowe whipped the puck on net from the sideboards where it careened off a Kings skate into the net, giving the Sharks their first regulation lead of the series since game one.

And 1:14 later the Sharks would strike again. Off the rush Logan Couture corralled a loose puck at his feet, swinging it to his backhand and sending a perfectly timed and placed pass over to the stick of Jason Demers who was crashing the net. The San Jose defenseman, who has been having an excellent series thus far, gave the Sharks a 2-0 lead.

One they wouldn't be content to sit on, at least for the time being.

Star-divide

With Matt Greene in the box for four minutes after getting rung up by virtue of a high sticking double minor that drew blood from Scott Nichol, San Jose's power play would get to work. Unless the first period the Sharks squandered the majority of their man-advantage time, struggling with entries into the zone and getting pucks to the net. Clowe would erase those struggles three minutes in however, tapping in a loose puck in front that Couture had put on net.

No lead in a Staples Center second can be considered safe, and that's just the situation San Jose found themselves in following their goal. Brad Richardson would capitalize on a poor play by Niclas Wallin that saw him fruitlessly dump the puck into the neutral zone during a Sharks breakout. Yet another neutral zone turnover, this one coming from Jamal Mayers, would allow the Kings to slink back within striking distance. A 2 on 2 towards the San Jose zone ended up in the back of the net, as Marc-Edouard Vlasic (who played Smyth perfectly) unfortunately tapped the puck into his own net for the score.

Whatever momentum Los Angeles could have gained from their comeback was quickly erased by San Jose early in the third. With the way this series has gone the Sharks likely considered the fact that at least one more goal was necessary to pick up the win, but they got two for the price of one as both Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski added tallies to extend the lead to 5-2. Kyle Wellwood executed a beautiful behind the net pass to Joe Thornton in front, giving the Sharks Captain his first goal of the series, and Pavelski would just get enough of a Dan Boyle point shot to change the angle and put it past the Kings Quick.

Torrey Mitchell would extend the lead to four later in the period, and although San Jose would struggle with turnovers and discipline later in the game which ended up spotting the Kings a goal, the Sharks would go on to take a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Some other abbreviated thoughts from tonight's game:

  • Jason Demers continued his impressive physical play this series, and all-around game overall. He's really stood out as a player who has matured since last season and has been a very reliable defenseman that McLellan has been able to count on. Of note, an excellent hip check to Dustin Brown in the first period brought back memories of Rob Blake, something that Kings and Sharks followers alike were bound to recognize.
  • Credit goes to Scott Nichol for a pair of two fourth line drawn calls that put the team at an advantage. In the first period he received a coinciding minor with Drew Doughty after giving him a bump at center ice, and in the second he drew a four minute power play for San Jose after mucking it up in front of the net and taking a shot in the face from Matt Greene. McLellan spoke about the importance of getting his fourth line back and engaged before the game tonight-- that's exactly what San Jose is going to need out of the scrappy Nichol.
  • Despite the score, San Jose didn't play a perfect game by any means-- they dominated the scoreboard, but were outshot badly at even strength by a 2:1 margin (14 for SJS, 29 for LAK). Although that may be partially due to their leads in the middle of the second and to at the beginning of the third, there still remains a lot of work to be done.
  • I was surprised that the Kings decided to play run and gun for the second straight night-- with San Jose's forward depth Murray and his club have to realize that getting into a game dominated by special teams and high goal totals is going to work in the Sharks favor. Although Los Angeles did a better job than game two in restricting San Jose opportunities in front of the net at evens, the pace from the opening faceoff was frantic. If LA expects to win game five in front of an HP Pavilion crowd whipped into a manic frenzy by the face-melting guitar licks of Metallica, they're going to need to tone it down and start playing conservative hockey. Something that a road game could reinforce.
  • Who did Joe Thornton blow a kiss to after his goal? Purdy assures me it wasn't a Kardashian sister-- maybe Cuba Gooding Jr.?
  • The strobe lights in the penalty box can grate the nerves (not to mention pose a danger to any epileptic opposing player that gets called for a penalty), but start times at Staples Center have to be pushed back at least five minutes each night when David Gaines takes the ice to sing the National Anthem. Strange.
  • As we mentioned earlier today, the higher seeded team win their series 92.3% of the time after taking a 3-1 lead. Tonight was huge.

Wellwood had a good all around game, I felt. Blocked shots, takeaways, assists, won all his faceoffs, and didn’t give up much. He even shot a few times. Good for him.

White has been a point-plus player so far in the postseason, too. That’s just awesome. He’s really starting to click in our system.

I just love that the third line combination has turned a switch on for both Wellwood and Mitchell. The way those two are playing…I mean, yeah, a lot of that might be having Pavs centering them, but this line’s success might be the biggest key to extended playoff success by the Sharks.

Opposing teams can’t hide their third defensive pair all night long. Granted, this might be less of an issue with Detroit and Vancouver, but still, what a boon this hopefully will continue to be for the Sharks.

Terry Murray apparently agrees.

“Nichol is the reason why they won,” Kings coach Terry Murray said. “Three goals were directly responsible for Nichol’s game.”

Sadly, Terry Murray also apparently cannot form coherent sentences.

Terry Murray sounds like a fool in the media...

Murray: "I thought our emotions were under control. I think the Sharks lost their composure at the end." So, two 10-minute misconducts in the final minute is keeping your composure? That coupled with his massive hypocrisy of condemning the Heatley hit while failing to acknowledge the dirtiness of the spearing on Thornton early in the game… Then he goes and publicly bemoans the fact that Kopitar is out (“He’s got a broken leg, guys. He’s not coming back”), insinuating that his current roster is doomed without Kopitar. Is that really something you want your guys to hear you say?

by Rhapsody in Teal on Apr 22, 2011 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

He’s never going to condemn a dirty play by one of his players. No coach will. The most they’ll do is change it to be a general statement about emotions and competitiveness, and team play. Something something play smarter something.

I’m not saying he should condemn his own guys, but to sit there and call out the Sharks when you know damn well your team was just as testy is just hypocritical. what I’m suggesting is that he shouldn’t have mentioned anything about the physicality and losses of composure in the game. For any dirty hits the Sharks made, the Kings had one to match. Nothing occurred in this game that’s atypical of a playoff matchup between division rivals.

Joe Thornton's kiss

According to the post game show, it was directed at Brodie Brazil (who was shown standing in the corner clapping for Jumbo). According to ESPN it was “some random Sharks fans.” Personally, I find the former answer more hilarious.

Can’t wait for Game 5 and the knockout punch (man LA is going to be scary next year if they can pick up 1-2 high caliber players from UFA in the offseason, they have 11 mil in cap space right now, and the cap bump will go to Doughty’s resign).

Now what I find myself wonder is if Chicago can pull off the miracle (which is possible if they’re psyching Luongo out and Van insists on keeping him in), what would be a better matchup for us. The rested Red Wings or the tired yet emotionally buzzed Hawks. We’ve fared well against both teams this season, so it is hard for me to decide, though i’m leaning towards another round 2 Red Wings elimination. Would be soooo awesome.

Demers had a good game

But on LA’s third, he lost the battle in front of the net and released Ponikarovsky for the screen that ultimately beat Niemi. Only real black mark on his game I can think of.

Credit to Nichol tonight, but the 4th line needs to look themselves in the mirror and decide to be a part of this playoff run. They have a very difficult task in terms of getting to playoff intensity in such limited minutes, but we need them to be dependable, and right now, they’re not. I’m afraid to break up any of the other lines right now because you don’t fix what isn’t broken, but Eager and Mayers could use a spark. I’d like McLellan to get them out early in Game 5 and get them engaged by throwing the body on the forecheck, and let them do what they do best.

Who's the better coach now?

We heard a lot of crap from LA fans on this site about how Terry Murray was outcoaching T-Mac in every aspect of the game. Let us look back for a minute.

In game 3 SJ used their timeout right away after they fell behind 2-0, to try and settle the Sharks down. When SJ came roaring back to make that same game 5-4, having scored 4 in a row, Murray still did not use his TO, why not? T-Mac switched goalies to fire up the team, Murray did not, even though Quick looked extremely rattled.

In game 4, Murray’s team played undeciplined hockey, taking penalty after penalty that cost them the game. Murray is partly to blame for not getting his teams emotions under control. He and they s/h known better.

And the best for last: Calling Heatley’s hit dangerous and cowardly, he called for a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. Clearly he’s lost it and from his stupid comments before this series even started, has shown his true douchebag colors. Perhaps the Heatley comment was spured by his brother in Ottawa who hates Heatley and how he punked the Sens? Somehow Bryan Murray got a contract extension from Ottawa, he must have compromising pictures of their owner, because that team is a complete joke!

So it’s clear, that McClellan and his lack of experience has completely outcoached Terry Murray and LA has completely lost their composure to a better team that is better coached.

by douchebags on Apr 22, 2011 7:16 AM PDT reply actions

Also

While I’m ranting…
Why didn’t Terry Murray condemn Dustin Brown’s spearing of Jumbo? Talk about dangerous and cowardly.

And this..
Murray lacks any humility. He is quick to point fingers, but never gives credit to McLellan and the Sharks for beating the crap out of them. On the other hand, McLellan has complimented the Kings defense and their special teams unit. To me, Murray seems classless and lacks contrition. I guy with his experience and resume should have done a better job with his team as the series has evolved instead of playing the blame game or saying we’ve done it to ourselves.

by douchebags on Apr 22, 2011 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

I doubt it does his team much good either. If I’m on the Kings, I look at that interview and say “Stop being a dick. They beat us. Let’s just work on getting better”. Amazing he has gone this far in his career with his “I’m picking up my puck and going home” persona.

by psantangeli on Apr 22, 2011 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

If Heatley’s trip was a so-called “gutless play”, then how does he presume to explain his captain’s actions last night, not to mention The Worst Hair In Hockey’s rugby tackle towards the end? Personally, I think he’s one short step away from Carlyle-levels of ass-hattery (I was going to write ‘douchebaggery’ but then I realised who I was replying to…)

by LimeySharkFan on Apr 22, 2011 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I was talking w/ other fans last night about Murray and he’s actually doing what most coaches do when their team is being outmatched on the ice – try their best to get the focus off of the actualy hockey / players and put on to the reffing, so-called dirty play, themselves. I don’t condone it and think it’s rather childish, but it happens all the time.

Thing is with Murray is that he’s hilariously (is that a word?) bad at it and I spent a good 10 minutes laughing at him during the post game interview. It was funny enough with his rampage against Demers, at least Demers’ his was slightly questionable, but Heatley’s tripping penalty last night was just that, a tripping penalty.

It’s really nice that McLellan make sure to compliment the other teams play and stay so diplomatic in his responses. He keeps such an even keel that it rubs off on his players.

by milanahalek on Apr 22, 2011 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

you’re right about it being a coaching tactic. Although it seems weird with two teams that don’t get that much media scrutiny, even locally. And yep, hilariously is a word

by a10dency2ask on Apr 22, 2011 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

All I can say

is that Terry Murray has looked on the verge of tears (or at least his eyes are welled up) in both postgames interviews for Games 3 and 4. So I don’t really care what he says after the game so long as he continues to look teary-eyed. That says a lot more about the Sharks play than any words of acknowledgement (aside from his “credit” to Scott Nichol’s work) IMO.

It’s a dumb penalty for Heatley to make, and I dislike his recent habit of committing lazy penalties in the last 5 minutes of games, but let’s take Murray’s comments seriously just for the sake of argument.

Give him a 5 minute major and a misconduct. With three or four minutes left in the game, and your team down by 3, I guess it’s possible you could pull off a rally of epic proportions and score 3 goals on the PP for force OT. Make that argument to the refs when it happened, but why even bother bringing it up in the post-game?

Trying to work the refs, from purely a coaching standpoint, is a good tactic — but I sure hold a lot of respect for TMac for not engaging in such behavior off the ice. Now, on the ice is a different story, and it would be nice to see him bitch a little more here and there when we get hosed by the refs.

Good Win Sharks!

Hi everyone! I’ve been here a couple fo times in the past and everyone was
very nice so I thought I’d try it again.
Nice win for the Sharks and I think they will wrap this one up.
I wish the same could be said for the Nucks: they are dismantling before my
very eyes. Not one game clusterf***…but two???
I am utterly flabbergasted by this.

Anyways, good win for the Sharks: hope they keep it up!

Puck control

I think what stood out most in last night’s game was the Sharks early puck possession strength. They looked poised and confident (very Detroit-esque) as the pace wasn’t maddening but swift enough to keep LA chasing. The confidence factor goes a long way with this team and hopefully it will continue on for another 13 wins, one at a time.

You have to remember...

The new confidence poll comes out on Monday. That, of course, was right after the abysmal Game 2…and if you remember from the comments around here, many people seemed less than confident in the Sharks at that point in time.

“GO SHARKS RAH RAH RAH!” has been absolutely money, back-to-back 6 goal wins since he (or she) suggested that gem- good one buddy! Slappy and his pom-pom might have to get that going in person on Saturday, who’s with me?

Also, they said in the postgame that Jumbo was blowing those kisses to Brodie and showed him in the split screen receiving them.
I’m still convinced he was blowing them at posh spice….

3-1 baby... sounds so good

Fabulous game last night. I guess everyone has Sharks fever right now because Buffalo Wild Wings in Dublin was busting at the seems with people. I think maybe two of the people in there weren’t watching the Sharks game. One watching basketball (yawn) and one was wearing a Hawks fan cheering his teams domination as well. Great atmosphere and what a game.

I’m so glad Jumbo scored the GWG last night. Yesterday, one of my co-worker/good friends and I were IMing at work and he was down on Thornton saying he needed to get traded and he’s useless because he doens’t ever score goals blah blah blah, the stuff people say when they watch 5 games a year. So lo and behold, Jumbo scores and tops it off with a blown kiss. Sweet!

Anyone think Bernier may start tomorrow for LA? I don’t know if Terry Murray has stated anything there.

Can’t wait for tomorrow… look for me at HP, I’m the one that always has the huge teal fin on top of my truck. :) Can’t miss me. Let’s wrap this up! Sharks in 5!

in the postgame, he seemed to say that he didn’t feel the goals were Quick’s fault at all. He said pulling Quick would have sent the wrong message. Probably feels the same about starting bernier next game

He basically said that sometimes you have to let your goalie play through it, and he thought that some of the goals were not his fault.

Murray reminds me of, like, an uncle who is smart but also a shut-in weirdo. You’re having a relatively normal conversation, albeit with a lot of odd pauses and middle-distance stares, and then he starts talking about how Sinatra had JFK killed or something.

The Great White Shark?

Any coincidence that every game we won, Ian White started?

It's tough living in exile in Iowa after 22 years in the Bay Area. Two things help: 1. Watching Sharks hunt on ice and watching Hawks lose while eating a Chicago-dog.

These games have been so crazy in L.A.

that leads have been tough to hold. Lots of attacking on both sides have made this series one of the better one’s I’ve seen. Really happy to be up 3-1 with the way these games have unfolded, by winning a couple of games in OT. Time to close it out in Game 5, and onward…Let’s Go Sharks!

I guess I should clarify...

Losses don’t bother me. How the team is playing, though, does. And in Game 2, and for stretches of Game 1, they looked like they didn’t want to skate hard or work hard…and that worried me. Being 1-1 in a series happens all the time.

That those guys making claims like: Kings in 5 were just blowing smoke. I might have taken them seriously if they had said something like the KIngs are off to a great start and may have a chance after all. It will be tough without Kopitar, but so far so good.

Since that was never said, just a bunch of anti-Sharks crap, I knew they were just trying to get people all wound up. That’s why I chuckled to myself about it. Where are they now? Exactly.

You know, what LWH said didnt bother me. He is a fan of LA. What was lame was the Sharks fans that crawled from under their bridge to just bitch about the game and were throwing in the towel after the 2nd game. It boggles the mind that they took the time to comment like that after a shutout lose and had nothing to say about the MIRACLE comeback. It sucks that there are diehard fans of teams that have ownership issues, one that may move away from their state and fans, wishing they were tied in a playoff series and the Sharks get this defeatist bullshit. If I were to ever flag anyone, which I dont, it would be these so called Sharks fans. They are the real TROLLS here to me, not the shit-talk of other teams fans…

Are people not allowed to be upset when their team plays way below their potential in a very important game? I get what you’re saying, but the real trolls are the fools that get big and tough and want to talk shit when their team wins one and then disappear again when they’re team is losing.

Nothing wrong with calling out the team

Fans should be upset when the team craps the bed. But to declare the series over after one loss? That crosses the line.

You can call them out for their poor play, but to say that the sky is falling, just shows a lack of perspective and understanding. It’s never over until they’re shaking hands. Just ask Boston last year when they blew a 3-0 lead in their series. OUCH!!!

I agree. But given our past, until we win a cup, I think fans are going to be a little more prone to jumping the gun on writing off the team when they start to see the familiar signs of past failures arising. It is a fallacy to take at face value what people are saying when they’re angry and frustrated and venting/ranting.

I’m with you on that point. And, I’ve seen some evidence of that. I’ve been guilty of it myself for months at a time this season. And, really, it’s nothing to feel guilty about. We’re a passionate bunch, and we’re going to get angry.

I know fans will jump the gun, but there’s jumping the gun, and jumping off a cliff. I still feel some of the highlighted posts are examples of full on lemming behavior.
