Ian White acquisition may be trade deadline's best
When it comes to trade talk, perhaps the most coveted NHL defenseman over the last three years has been Tomas Kaberle. Every deadline seemed to come with more speculation than the last, yet Kaberle remained a Toronto Maple Leaf. That changed in 2011, when he was finally shipped to the Boston Bruins on February 18th.
Kaberle wouldn't have garnered all the attention unless he was a talented player; he's one of the best offensive defensemen in the league and had earned his share of respect. Unfortunately, that respect often comes in the form of trade speculation in today's NHL.
However, Kaberle hasn't had the effect that many expected him to in Boston. With only nine regular season points and one playoff assist scored since the trade, the hype surrounding the perpetuating Tomas Kaberle trade talk hasn't amounted to tangible results, especially in the playoffs.
San Jose had been linked in part to Kaberle over the past few years; the need for a defenseman in addition to their surplus of forward assets made them a possible destination. Instead, the Sharks solved for their lack of defensive depth the same way many other teams have over the last three years. They traded for Ian White.
The oft-traded White was acquired by the San Jose Sharks on February 18th from the Carolina Hurricanes, the same day the Bruins made their move for Kaberle. White had been a target for Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson for a few years, yet Wilson watched him move from team to team until finally landing with the Sharks in 2011.
It was a bit of a risk by Wilson, who took a chance on an offensively skilled player who hadn't necessarily been a scoring force to that point in the season. With just 14 points in 57 games with Calgary and Carolina, White was having a down year by most standards and wasn't the flashy name some fans wanted to see stitched onto a teal sweater for the playoff push.
If there were critics of the move, they have been silenced. Since the trade, White has been nothing short of spectacular.
In fact, White has scored 15 points in just 26 regular season and playoff games since his first game with San Jose on February 19th. That doesn't just sound impressive, it is. It's the most scored by any defenseman traded to a playoff team at the deadline this year. Antti Niemi gets much of the credit for San Jose's hot streak to end the season, but it's no coincidence that San Jose has won 21 of the 25 games (including 3 for 3 in the playoffs) that White has appeared in since the trade.
Back end scoring was a concern for San Jose heading into the season, but White has seemed to solve that issue so far in the playoffs. Including his two assists in last night's win against Los Angeles, White has tallied five total in the series to lead the Sharks in that category. In just three playoff games, he is second amongst all NHL players in assists.
He's also been responsible defensively, an important area for a San Jose team which has struggled at times in the goal prevention department, especially shorthanded. While not a defensive stopper, his experience and ability to move the puck up ice and feed the Sharks lethal transition game gives his coaches and his teammates confidence. All in all, White has been a huge success.
That success is especially sweet considering how little San Jose gave up to get him. With nothing in terms of trade leverage, Doug Wilson grabbed White for just a second round pick, the same price it took to acquire then Carolina defenseman Niclas Wallin a year prior. By giving up just the pick, Wilson was able to add to his team without subtracting from a roster that had won 10 of it's previous 13 games. At the same time, the second round pick didn't make any significant dent to the franchise's future situation. In retrospect, the price looks like a pittance next to the bounty paid for Kaberle, and is less than the packages given up for bigger names such as Bryan McCabe, Dennis Wideman and Francois Beauchemin, all of whom have fewer points since joining their respective teams than White does with San Jose.
The playoffs are far from over; San Jose still has to close out their first round series against Los Angeles, which they can accomplish with a win tomorrow in San Jose. However, today is as good of a day as any to highlight the impact that White has made on the Sharks playoff push and their current 3-1 series lead against the Kings.
Based on what we've seen so far, White will undoubtedly play a part in any victories the Sharks have going forward.

In my mind
The trade for White was still Joslin and a 2nd. But all in all, it still seems a very fair price to pay. Joslin had reached his ceiling with us. He may go on to a more fruitful career in Carolina, but I feel we parted with him at the right time, and we certainly got more than enough in return.

Technically, I guess you could say that was the case. But according to everything I read, the deals were separate so I treated them as such.

I don't think I read anything anywhere that said the deals were linked
But the timing and the nebulous “future considerations” makes them blend together in my mind. And honestly, if you’re Jim Rutherford, and Doug Wilson comes to you for a second year in a row and asks for a defenseman better than the one he wanted last season and again offers a 2nd round pick, you gotta think Rutherford wants something more in return.
But regardless, good trade either way.

re: Joslin
In 17 games each for both SJ and CAR this season
SJ: 1G, 3A, -2, 11 SOG (That’s it?)
CAR: 1G, 4A, +7, 23 SOG (I guess that’s more indicative of an AHL all-star)
I don’t know if I’d say he hit his ceiling in San Jose, but rather he was just too low on the totem pole to really crack the lineup effectively. Maybe that’s really just saying the same thing in a different manner, but I think he will grow a la Marcel Goc with more playing time and a bigger role in Carolina.
But kudos to DW for flipping him for White (I consider him part of the deal too, technicalities aside).

I had this theory a few days back...
That suggests Ian White is somehow the magically key to Sharks winning games. The Sharks were good before the deadline, but were great after acquiring White. The Sharks were killing the Kings in Game 1… Until White got injured. They eked out an overtime win and got slaughtered in a White-less Game 2. White comes back in Game 3, and it end sup being one of the best games of hockey I’ve seen. Game 4 was all Sharks.
I’m telling you, there’s something to this!

So true...
I was with most here when I thought he would be paired with Vlasic, but there is no doubt Demers-Vlasic have been great together. Then again, with Demers turning into more of a balanced defenseman than an offensive gunner, maybe tossing White and Demers together and letting Vlasic caddy Braun would work out well. White and Demers already show pretty good chemistry on the 2nd PP unit.
But, no need to mess with success now, let that stuff play out next year.

Hopefully sooner than later. Unfortunately defensive defenseman take a little longer to groom than forwards. Its better that he develops than rushed into action, the Sharks dont need him right now.

I do love some Ian White...
I was watching the Bruins-Habs game with the roomie yesterday, and both of us commented about how awful Kaberle had been playing, and how much better an acquisition White had turned out to be. Hopefully he keeps it up, because his scoring from the back end is really helpful to us.

White and Wellwood have been amazing so far but Eager hasn’t been so good in the playoffs. I think we should scratch Mayers and play Ginner.
Eager hasn't been playing at all outside the PK.
Or unless they need someone to fuck the other guys up.
If the fourth line isn’t even being USED, I definitely support McGinn swapping for Mayers. Or better yet, Ben Ferriero.

Even when we dress 7, Boyle still plays insane minutes. Bottom line, 4th line needs to step up. They’ve proven to be competent in the regular season. They need to start showing up. All 3 players on that line individually have made big time contributions this season. They are going to have to rely on each other from here on out.

After being embarrassed on home ice twice and based on the end of the game shenanigans by Kyle Clifford (ass), tomorrow night’s game can get extra chippy especially if the Sharks take a big lead early. If it does, I hope one of the two will be there to punch his face in.

Wow, White is tied for second in team scoring these playoffs.
Dude has five assists in three games. Clowe leads scoring with 7(!) points (4-3), and couture is tied with White (2-3). What I love about this Sharks team compared to the teams of years past is how they now have three complete scoring lines. The points can literally come from anywhere. Gone are the days where you could win against the Sharks just by defending HTML well.

in my opinion the most impressive players this series have been white, wellwood, and clowe. these guys have been monsters out there (even though wellwood needs to freaking shoot, he gets the puck deep and has made some clutch plays).
not to jump too far ahead of ourselves, but i definitely think we should drop mayers (no-brainer. i cant stand him), wallin and huskins next year. white HAS to be resigned and i wouldnt mind resigning eager either (hometown discount?). i was reading somewhere about how we should maybe ship crankshaft for a more mobile defenseman with a big shot (suggested weber). i could see how this would help us on the back end… but i cant imagine the sharks without big douglas murray :( and weber would come at a high price
but think about it…
boyle-weber
braun-white
demers-vlasic or something of that nature… i like that. a lot. (still sad with no murray there)

im not saying weber in particular necessarily
but just someone weber-esque i guess. a mobile yet big body with a big shot. weber would probably be the absolute best possible guy haha so its unlikely (he’s an RFA at the end of this season) but i just dont know if murray is the best guy to be on a top pairing with boyle. not that he’s bad, but just there could be a lot better

Wellsy’s looked great on the hellacopter line but has had a couple of lapses where you can’t tell he’s not quite as responsible on our side of the redline as I’d like. He took a very lazy skating path towards the puck carrier in the neutral zone just before the Kings scored their second goal. It didn’t come back to haut us, but it would have been nice to see him either a) make a stronger play on the puck or b) put himself in a better position to backcheck.

yeah i can see that
he also weighs about 50 lbs so he doesnt exactly finish checks very well either haha and ive noticed on a few occasions he hasnt been stellar in his own zone 100% of the time, but he has been one of the best guys on the ice when it comes to make smart place in the offensive zone

I really like Wellwood’s puck possession skills, it’s opened up some space for Pavs. Also, the way he holds onto the puck seems to really have the Kings D running around and getting out of position.
all that said, I don’t think he’s thrown a single check this season, he floats in the D zone, and is about as physically intimidating as a house cat.
oh and i also want to add vlasic to that list. he has been AWESOME.

White & Wellwood
Both have been brilliant. Wellwood was on the ice for all three of the Sharks 3rd period goals, assisting on 2 of the. Thornton’s goal was pretty much all him. Got the puck behind the net, got it to Patty, retrieved Patty’s rebound, swung a beauty pass to Thornton who thank GOD got the shot up. That was such a nice pass, Thorntonesq pass to Thornton.
Pickles
It’s been so much fun watching him play this series. He’s been good for awhile but he’s been looking GREAT this series.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen him leading/up in the rush or how often he’s kept pucks in at the blueline and either gotten it through to the net or read the play well enough to throw it into an area of ice where he knows his guy can get it. I think he probably had 2-3 smart plays on the shift where Clowe scored his tap-in during the Game 3 comeback.

Pickles has been fantastic
… the whole 2nd half of the season.
He has morphed into an elite shutdown D man in the past few months. He’s gotten much more physical, adding some hits and lots of little bumps and crosschecks, etc that irritate the opposing team. I think that’s allowed him to get a little more space to be involved with the offense.
The confidence is building… he may yet turn into one of the top D-man in league. The potential we saw for him after his rookie season.

Great pick up...
Especially when you consider the suspect moves of Huskins and re-signing Wallin. Luckily both s/b gone next year and that will be enough $$$ to re-sign White. With Boyle, Vlasic, Murray, Demers, Braun, and White, we have our starting 6. Sprinkle in a couple of guys from Worcester and our D already looks better for next year. If we’re going to bring back Seto, I’m guessing it will take around $2.5 or $3 million, unless he’s tendered an offer in which case it may be more. I’d love for Wellwood to come back to stick with Pav’s and Mitchell. As for the fourth line, it may be time next year to get younger, with Mashinter, Wingles and Petrecki. We can pick up a bruiser anytime. Ferriero, McGinn, and McCarthy are all RFA’s and expendable to me. Is Nitty worth that $2 million DW gave him? He’s got one year left, and that’s a lot of cap $$$ to pay a back up goalie. Also, there is no way Logan Couture gets mentioned in any trade, he’s just way to valueable and really cheap next year. So we’re poised to be a very strong team again next season.
Is Nitty worth that $2 million DW gave him? He’s got one year left, and that’s a lot of cap $$$ to pay a back up goalie.
Game 3. Just sayin’. Between him and Nemo next season, we’d have $5.4M invested in 2 goaltenders. That’s high-ish, but not outlandish. Unless we think Greiss is going to have some magical rainbow pooping bounceback or Stalock is ready to be a full-time NHL backup, stick with the guy you know can give you 40 solid starts.
Sprinkle in a couple of guys from Worcester and our D already looks better for next year.
I love the idea of Braun in the top 6, but let’s not take it for granted he’s going to be an 82 gamer for us just yet. We’re tempted to, because of the strides Demers has made this season, but Jason really buckled down in the off-season and did some hard work to become NHL-ready. Not saying that Braun can’t, just that we shouldn’t ASSUME it. Also, as far as the D-men left in Worcester, I think they’re all still a season or two away. Moore doesn’t have NHL speed yet, and I don’t think we’ve seen enough from Petrecki or Doherty to properly assess them.
Ferriero, McGinn, and McCarthy are all RFA’s and expendable to me.
I’d disagree on Ferriero. He’s always looked good with the big club whenever he’s been given a chance. At the very least, I think he’s a promising enough prospect that he’s worth moving for a young defensive prospect to restock the cupboard in Worcester if we decided he wasn’t going to crack the current crop of forwards with the big club. And if the unthinkable happened and someone offer-sheeted Seto to the point we couldn’t match, Ferriero would seem to be the most logical replacement. You could put HTML back together and put Ferriero with Cloweture, where he’s already shown some prowess.

You (not you specifically Elvis) also have to remember that the Sharks need to ice a team in Wocester and all 3 of those guys are very good players. I’d hate to lose any of them in the offseason – they only require a 10% pay increase as a qualifying offer and all 3 won’t have any more bonus clauses. There’s no reason for any of them to not be resigned.

Considering that in the past two seasons, we’ve taken Worcester’s best Center AND best Defenseman, no harm in having more capable bodies down there. Charlie Coyle’s going to need linemates when he gets there!

I want them to leave the Worcester D alone after they pluck Braun for next season officially. The Baby Sharks’ D was pretty awful for stretches of this season, and I want it to be stable so that Doherty, Petrecki, and Acolatse can have an environment that’s conducive to their development.
I’m not sure on Desjardins. He looks almost NHL-ready and could crack the big club, but he makes the WorSharks’ second line work. And he can shut down AHL offenses from a forward position. It wouldn’t be bad to give him another year to keep developing into a younger, bigger version of Nichol.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
The entire Wocester team is gonna be very young and very different next year. The Sharks org has a lot of decisions to make. There’s going to be 3 new d-men (Acolatse, Doherty and Wrenn) and quite a few new forwards (Viedensky, Varone, Reid, Connolly off the top of my head) that they’ll want to incorporate into the lineup.
Desjardins, Wingels, McGinn, McCarthy, Ferriero are all going to be given a very long look at training camp by the big club.
It’ll be an interesting season for the Wor-Sharks!
I gotta say i totally called it!
I’ve been wanting us to sign ian white since early last offseason. You can see all my posts lobbying for him to be signed here.
Like i said in one of the posts, when Ian White turns it on he’s easily on par with Dan Boyle, except you make a tradeoff of some of Boyle’s skating ability for a better point shot owned by White.
The one knock on Ian White during this last offseason and at the deadline was that he was inconsistent, but i think that can be attributed to a lack of motivation due to him playing on weak hockey teams that don’t make the playoffs. Now that’s he’s on a cup contending team and he’s actually playing in the playoffs he’s finally playing up to his abilities, and he looks amazing.
I still can’t believe how cheap we got him for. I’m sure he’ll be resigned next season, and hopefully we can find him a better defense partner to play with too. Sorry Hamburgers!
Well done.
Very impressed with White; we’ll see if he can really shake the inconsistency rap as they advance.
I like the Wallin-White pairing. The Burgermeister stays home, White Castle jumps up…good enough for me.
I was somewhat surprised to hear Rusanowsky & McLellan discussing Niclas before the game last night; apparently he’s been a positive influence on the young ones. I thought I even heard the name “Rob Blake” referenced…for having Cup experience only, I believe.
Speaking of Nic’s cup, it hangs between P. LeBrun and Scott Nichol during a brief clip currently on ESPN…(shudders)…I’m going to floss between my ears right now. Sorry, folks.

I agree.
I don’t have too much to say, honestly, other than I really do like the Wallin-White pairing as well!

I believe my exact words (to Evilducks) were:
IT’S CHRISTMAS!
I’m really happy to have White. And the price we paid was one that should go up on the big board of DW finding value.
I think his performance now is a reflection of him finally being comfortable in our system. I think his issues in Toronto had to do with Toronto having issues. I think his issues in Carolina were because (as White hinted) they wanted him to be more of a defensive, physical defenseman and that’s not at all his game. Now that he can do what he does best, he’s starting to score.
Probably doesn’t hurt that he’s pumped to be in the playoffs, too.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
So I just found this picture of Wallin with a cow hat

Sometimes I curse his Hockey, but damn, I'd totally hang with Wallin over a beer. Guy strikes me as a lightning bolt of barhopping awesomeness.

Draft day is going to be interesting
Looks like the Wild are not gonna pick up Brent Burns’s contract. You know DW is going to at-least look into it. Cap would be pretty tight, but gosh goly what a D lineup that would be.

I would like to put this out there because he gets a lot of flak…
Thank you, Doug Wilson, for the players you brought in.
Go Sharks!

He only got flack over Niemi...
…and pretty much all of us repented at this point. ;-)

I've made it absolutely no secret that I totally loved the Ian White acquisition.
He has the skills, the discipline, and just plain of fashioned enthusiasm that seems to carry over to the rest of the team when he’s on ice. He brought back a type of blocking rarely seen here that seems to have spread to the rest of the team quite a bit (falling to the ice to take away low angle).
And then there’s everything Matt outlined above.
And you’ve got oa admit, there sure is something cool about seeing a kid that’s never been in the playoffs bloom in their first series: At least one point in every game he’s been in so far.
Awesome.
Way to go, “Great White!”

Awesome Pickup
The day we got Ian White, I remarked that finally we have a complete team and a replacement for Rob Blake. That now all the defensemen had their assignments and the team was complete with White taking the Blake role.
Little did I know that it would work out this well. Ian White is the perfect offensive defenseman to round out our defensive core. The record with Ian in the lineup speaks for itself.
Go Sharks
DW Did It Again
Even though the Sharks have never won the cup, I for one am so happy that DW is our GM. This guy gets so much criticism from fans and the hockey press for not getting the Sharks over the hump to the finals. That he has put together a team of guys that don’t care enough or are down right chokers. This franchise has been in the hunt for the cup the last six years
and you really can’t ask a whole lot more from this team.
You look at the other bay area franchises that their level of success pales in comparison to the consistent winning of the Sharks.
Now that I have said all of that. It sure would be nice to get this team to the finals. If they don’t make it that far, it doesn’t take away from the superb job DW has done.
Terry Murray Is A Crybaby And A Loser
For Murray to single out Heatley for what he did after what Stoll did to Ian White and call Heatley a dirty player was very laughable.
TERRY MURRAY IS A FREAKING CRYBABY AND IF ITS TOO TOUGH IN THE PLAYOFFS FOR HIM, HE CAN RETIRE AND GO PLAY GOLF. I HATE IT WHEN COACHES WHO DON’T DO ANYTHING BUT STAND BEHIND THE BENCH, INTERJECT THEIR DISTAIN FOR PHYSICAL HOCKEY WHEN THEIR OWN PLAYERS USE DIRTIER TACTICS THAN WHATS HE’S COMPLAINING ABOUT. GO LOOK AT STOLL’S HIT ON WHITE AND THEN HEATLEY’S HIT AND THEN YOU WILL SHUT UP.
