Game ones are always the most difficult article to write (and read) throughout the course of a series primarily because at this point you've soaked in all the information you can get your hands on when it comes to the two teams. Star players, goaltenders, role players, nothing will be a surprise at 7:06 PM tonight.

Once that puck drops at 7:07 however, things change and those surprises begin to happen The storylines and plot lines from earlier this week disappear. In their place come new performances, manic and tragic, blissful and blessed, all breathing new life into the neverending stories of heroes and goats.

Take a player like Antti Niemi for example-- a very underwhelming series against Los Angeles, quite possibly the worst in his career in terms of save percentage. And yet at 7:07 tonight comes an opportunity for redemption. The postseason is the perfect example of "it's not what you've done, it's what you've done for me lately" in action, and tonight, he can singlehandedly change not just how we view his series against Los Angeles ("on second thought he was better than I thought he was"), but also how we view him as a goaltender ("the guy just comes up big at the right time"). And of course there's the other side of that coin, where a single mistake can change the entire conversation about a team or player or coach in the blink of an eye.

It's completely unfair no matter which way it goes, and I think the majority of pundits and fans and analysts across the League recognize that. But them's the breaks, and frankly, them's the nature of the beast. As a rule playoff hockey isn't fair-- bounces, minor errors, hell, mere inches change the course of history. It's what makes it so appealing and what makes a series like this all the more intriguing. There will probably be at least one bounce or break that wins a game for the Sharks or Wings; and on some level, that single bounce or break just may win them the series.

When you talk about razor-thin margins you talk about these guys. With that in mind, here's what we've been saying leading up to today (pretty sure that transition doesn't even make sense):

  • Initial thoughts about the series [link]
  • Breakdown of the two teams basic statistics (PP, PK, EV etc.) [link]
  • A look at just how ridiculously successful these organizations have been over the last 7 seasons [link]
  • Series schedule and ruminations on other playoff series taking place [link]
  • The pairing of Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Jason Demers will be a big key vs. Detroit [link]
  • Analysis of how Tomas Holmstrom manages to disrupt opposing goaltenders [link]
  • Jimmy Howard has had his fair share of struggles against the Sharks during his career [link]
  • Finally, we will have a podcast series predictions dropping later today. So stick around, hang out, and make yourself at home. It's going to be a long wait.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-3. Goals by Pavelski, Heatley, Boyle, and Thornton.

Looking forward to a good series

The Sharks need to make sure they start well (defensively moreso) and play physical in the 1st and I’ll be happy. Great articles previewing this series all around. Can’t wait for puck drop.

I gotta say i’m pretty nervous about this game/series, and that’s coming from someone who predicted us to sweep the first round.

I’m anxious to see how Niemi plays. I really hope Niemi can rebound (i probably shouldn’t use that word) from the Kings series.

I’m anxious to see who our 6th defenseman is, and If it’s Wallin i’m worried that he’s going to continue his sloppy play, and i’ll continue wondering if Braun could’ve brought more to the table. If it’s Braun i’ll be nervous to see how he plays in his own zone against a talented team like the Wings when they’re in serious playoff mode.

I don’t think the Sharks have really put in a full 60 minute effort in any of the games they’ve played yet, and we’re going to need at least 4 of those if we want to get past the wings.

My prediction – Sharks in 6.

Sharks win tonight 5-2. (our lucky score last postseason against the Wings.)

I'm so pumped for this one

I’m getting tired of reading all the naysayers on every blog/forum other than fearthefin. I just want to watch some San Jose hockey, and hopefully hand it to Big D like last year. Given that I do not live in the San Jose area, I do not have as great of a hatred for Anaheim or Dallas (although I really do dislike both), but I sure as hell hate Detroit. I have been to two games at Detroit, and got berated badly at both (and I wasn’t even mouthing off). Anyways, I really do hope we hand it to them again this year! (Sharks in 5 would be nice, but this seems more like a Sharks in 6 series). GO SHARKS!!!

I have an uneasy feeling about this series...

I know the Sharks have won 7 of their last 9 against the Wings. I know they’ve won their last 3 against them this regular season. I know Jimmy Howard is swiss cheese.

But…the Sharks looked so bad for much of the LA series. And Detroit is head and shoulders (and probably a ladder or two) above LA in terms of talent level and level of team play. The Sharks won’t be able to pull the crap they did against LA. If they do, they’re getting swept.

Now, I can’t imagine the Sharks will come out looking that bad…but the inconsistency that has plagued the Sharks all year appears to be rearing its ugly head in the playoffs as well. Game to game…hell, period to period…we have literally no idea which Sharks team will show up. And that worries the shit out of me.

Nothing I can do about it, of course. If the Sharks are going to suck, they’re going to suck. If they’re going to be awesome, they will be awesome. I just hope they can be awesome long enough to get past the Wings…who are looking to be on top of their game right now.

I have a peaceful and easy feeling about this series...

I hear what you’re saying, but like you correctly pointed out, there is nothing you or I can do about which Sharks team will show up.

Beating the Red Wings is what it will take to continue our quest to Lord Stanley and his elusive Cup. So as important as this series is, there will be another one after this that is even more paramount. First things first, Detroit will be much more challenging than was LA, but our struggles against them do not necessarily mean we’ll struggle in the same ways against Detroit. But as you’ve intimated, we are flawed and thus problems will ensue.

It will be entertaining, action packed, and frankly what we live for being Sharks fans. And in the end if we want it more, execute and play with resilient passion and effort, then I’m confident that our team will prevail. Perhaps I’m just caught up in the particles? Those same particles that took the SF Giants to the improbable land of World Series champs. Now it’s time for the SJ Sharks to make their improbable run and in so doing, make this the most memorable Sharks season of all.

GO SHARKS!!!

by douchebags on Apr 29, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

See

That’s what makes me think the awesome sharks will be here. Like during that 6 game losing streak when you could feel (hope?) that a huge winning streak was just around the corner, the sharks have been really good at rebounding this year (and last).

They know what’s at stake. They know it’s Detroit. They won’t be perfect, but I have every bit of faith that they’ll be good enough.

by warning on Apr 29, 2011 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah i feel the same way. I’m actually kind of wondering how the heck we beat them last season, because i feel we have a much stronger team this season. Lets hope the sharks show up with their game faces on and they all (Niemi especially) put the Kings series behind them.

by Khaaz on Apr 29, 2011 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

The first 10 minutes

I think the first 10 minutes of the game will be very telling. The Sharks will have no problem getting jacked up for this game, it’s the Redwings after all. If they can channel that into strong defensive play instead of dumb penalties I think they’ll come out on top.

I think Dan Boyle is going to be key in this series, if he plays the way he did in round 1 the Sharks aren’t going to get too far, he needs to be much, much better!

Puck Daddy staff writers made their 2nd round series predictions- about half of them took the Sharks surprisingly. I agree… it all depends on how Nemo handles a screening Holmstrom I believe.

Detroit comes out a little rusty after 9 days off… Sharks take advantage. I was going to say 3-2 (since that was the score for the majority of the games against Detroit last playoffs correct?) Sharks. Goals by Thornton, Boyle, and Heatley.

GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See y’all at the tank!

by Chicago Shark on Apr 29, 2011 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Good luck!

And I for one look at this as a budding rivalry. One that can be classified as the new kid trying to knock the old pro off his perch. I could be wrong, but I perceive SJ as being viewed as a threat by Wings fans (perhaps more of an annoyance?) and a dangerous team that has gotten your attention.

Most experts would probably call this years match-up a toss up. It will be great theater and it will be compelling. Cheers!!!

by douchebags on Apr 29, 2011 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Rivalry, indeed.

i think you might even understate the status the sharks have, at this point. i think with their 5 year streak of playoff performances and the acquisition of todd mclellann (our former assistant coach), you guys have continued to produce an ever tightening ship and really earned a bit of a pedigree (i don’t put much stock in the popular narratives that arise about things like “choking” and such. i recognize there are real psychological factors but it’s always talked about in a conveniently intangible way that consigns the team to fate without remedy. nonsense).
they gave everyone a reason to believe last year that they were serious contenders and i think this year is no different. given that and my fandom, this series is easily the most epic available in the semis this year.

Sharks fans going to the game

KEEP IT LOUD TONIGHT! Ivano and I have been discussing the super high ticket prices for this series. Ivano pointed out the prices are the same as the WCF last year- so same price, one round earlier. This worries me because 1) tickets are still available, 2) it makes it really hard for some of the die-hard fans without a lot of cash to go. So, if you are going to the game, keep it INSANELY LOUD THERE! The Tank is known for being crazy and loud and deafening. Let’s keep it that way- even if the ticket prices are keeping some fans at home that normally would be there.

I put my deposit for next years Shark Pak last month so I could get tickets this season. For game 5 of the Cup Finals… $256 for ONE ticket in the upper bowl… and I’m not talking center ice or blue line, I’m talking about behind the goalie towards the very top. It’s ridiculous.

But I pay it anyway. It’s the one thing I really don’t mind spending a lot of money on because it makes me happy. Although I’m sure once I live in a cardboard box, I won’t be.

I will be sure to be extra freakin loud tonight (although I always am)…

Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...

Don’t even want to tell you how much it’s costing us to go Sunday (family of 4). Last year we went to to 2 playoff games—this year one for the same amount, ridiculous!!!

I promise to keep it loud!! My 9 year old can practically pierce metal with his voice!

And what’s the advice (Murray’s grandfather, Lars [Lasse] Bjorn) gives him?

The keys for this series:

Douglas Murray will need to be the OFFENSIVE FORCE we know him as, chipping in a few hat tricks?
Will Detroit finally start playing at their age (PLEASE!!!!)?
Will Detroit and their fans whining to the refs distract them from the games?
Stephen Hawking will be expected to fill in for Wallin, he must be prepared to shutdown the bottom Detroit forwards and occassionally chip in offensively.
How will Demers use science to defeat the BBQ Wings? Putting auto turrets in front of Niemi to keep out that annoying Holmstrom according to my inside sources.
Will we see Angry Joe after I told him it was the Red Wings who hunted Woolly Mammoths to extinction?
Who’s ass will be bigger, Clowe’s or Holmstrom’s?
Will Mike Modano play? (PLEASE GOD NO!!!)
If the auto turrets fail, it will be up to Murray to kindly remind Holmstrom that the crease is a no parking zone.
Hawking will need to use advanced physics to get Datsyuk off his game.
Nabokov needs to be in net, seriously, he was awesome against them last year.
Joe Pavelski will need to continue to be awesome and clutch, which he will.
Clowe will need to set up his shop “Clowe’s Garbage Goals” right in front of Howard.
It will be up to the Sharks as a team to make sure no harm comes to the Teeth.
Douglas Murray will need to break lots of people.
The Sharks will need to take joy and satisfaction from all the whining when they are in Detroit.
Dan Boyle and Nemo need to not suck and get back to their normal awesome selves.

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
Good job Giants, now win 3 more world series titles and then you just might be worthy of being mentioned in the same league as the A's.
THAT IS NABOKOV IN NET NOT NITTYMAKISHUTUP!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pumped

To burn time before tonight, I have raided my sisters’ Glee posters, putting Sharks jerseys on them.

Also, remember last year Chicago had a tough time with Nashville in the 1st round last year, where they won in 6. Chicago was much better then them but had a tough time with them, similar to this year with us and LA. Lets hope we can bring our A game tonight!
