Anaheim Calling
With the season coming to a close, the Sharks have three games to achieve the few things they haven't yet this season. These objectives vary in importance, but reaching any of the potential plateaus only helps to further set the table for the imminent postseason.
First, Sharks' Captain Joe Thornton is just a goal or an assist away from reaching the career milestone of 1,000 NHL points. Thornton has stated that breaking that barrier means little in the long-run; the Captain's eyes appear firmly affixed on the ultimate goal of playoff success. However, it would be nice if Thornton could grab his 1,000th point before the season ends, if only to avoid the unnecessary and equally predictable questions that would accompany a failure to do so. If Thornton has to wait until next season to get his 1,000th, you can be sure that it will be mentioned ad nauseum until the puck drops for the 2011-2012 season.
Thornton has always been one to receive undue blame for the teams' struggles, but it would be hard to criticize him after he just reached such an impressive career achievement. Well, at least until the Sharks drop a game in the playoffs. Then it's his fault again. The soothsayer in me predicts Thornton notches his 1,000th point tonight, coming off what else but his 695th career assist.
The other point(s) all should be paying attention to tonight are in the standings. With just three games left, the Sharks sit one point over Detroit in the West for second in the Conference. The Sharks control their own destiny here; three wins guarantees them the second seed. It likely won't take a 3-0-0 record to obtain that seeding; even so, maybe it's better... just to be safe. Home ice advantage against any team besides Vancouver is on the line, and that's an important an asset to have as any come playoff time.
Lastly, the Sharks can make a small statement if a different Joe lights the lamp. If Joe Pavelski scores a goal before the season's end, it would give the Sharks seven twenty-goal scorers for the first time in the franchises' twenty-year history. No, that accomplishment doesn't mean much in the long run; the regular season slate is wiped clean as soon as the first round begins. Still, the scoring depth displayed by San Jose this year is astounding, further evidence of the idea that this bunch of players may be different than those which have failed in years past.
If they truly are different, though, the Sharks will continue to keep their collective foot on the necks of their Pacific Division foes. The division title may be locked up, but the playoff picture remains far from certain. Anaheim, who looked like a veritable lock for the tournament just a week ago, is hanging on by a thread. Just two points separate the Ducks from Dallas and Calgary, the ninth and tenth seeds in the conference. They've now lost two in a row coming into tonight's match, and a prolonged losing stretch could send them to the golf course sooner than ever expected.
As such, Anaheim will likely come out swinging against San Jose. Not only do they need the two points desperately, but its likely that the Ducks will glean some extra motivation from their most recent loss in San Jose. Anaheim didn't just blow a two-goal lead in the contest, but they also were the victims of an unfortunate injury to Norris candidate Lubomir Visnovsky. Visnovsky is playing again, but that will likely do little to quell the anger displayed by his teammates, and more specifically, his coach Randy Carlyle. Carlyle, who made some lewd gestures involving a certain finger on the middle of ones hand to go with some sailor's vocabulary, should have no trouble penning some inspirational words on the team board before the game. His squad will be ready to fight, and make no mistake, the Ducks are still a scary bunch.
The Sharks have had little trouble dealing with fight lately, though. Over the course of the last month, and more specifically the last four games, San Jose has made quick work of teams battling for a playoff spot. Doing so again tonight would be even more proof that this team is ready foe whatever comes their way.

Absolutely making sure these are getting up on time, huh? Really hoping for the cookie to crumble most spectacularly and have Dallas get in instead of Anaheim. Filthy team thieves! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!

I’d rather have the Duck and Dallas in than Chicago. Maybe it’s just me. It’ll give the Pacific absolute cred. Also, I’m still angry about last year and because Kane is an ugly kid.
It's tough living in exile in Iowa after 22 years in the Bay Area. Two things help: 1. Watching Sharks hunt on ice and watching Hawks lose while eating a Chicago-dog.
I guess i might be the only one who would rather see the Hawks in the playoffs instead of Dallas. I would love to play Chicago again and beat the living piss out of them. They have obviously lost talent this year and I think the Sharks would dominate Chicago the way the Hawks did against San Jose last year. I feel that a series with Dallas would have a greater chance of knocking the Sharks out of the playoffs than one with the Hawks. Dallas has always been a thorn in the side for the Sharks. They seem to play San Jose better than one else. I will be relieved when I see the playoffs start and Dallas with their golf bags in hand.

I agree- I’d rather have Chicago first round than Dallas. Travel time is most likely the same as well.

Chicago is slightly longer if memory serves
But whatever. We can beat either Dallas or Chicago over 7 games. I want Dallas to miss the playoffs period. I could really care less about Chicago.

I hate Chicago. Like, I don’t care that the Sharks’ biggest rivals are the Ducks and Stars, I just absolutely hate the Chicago Blackhawks. I hate their fans, I hate their broadcasters, and I hate their team.
So it would please me to no end if they miss the playoffs, even if Dallas makes it in their stead. I hate the Blackhawks that much. But that’s more of a personal thing.

Just be glad you weren't living here to be bombarded even more by all that 'Indian Summer' crap
That series left a very bad taste in my mouth, in part because I never got to post the status ‘Black Hawk Down!’ on my Facebook page. It was such a good one too!

My roommate last year was from Chicago (or, as we found out later, an hour south of Chicago). She had no idea how hockey was played or who any of the players on the team were, just that she liked the Blackhawks. And she got super obnoxious about how her team was winning. I asked if she liked Kane or Toews, or if she was old-school and liked Roenick, and she said, “I don’t know who those guys are. I think there’s a guy named Toes but I don’t know if he’s good.” Ughhhhh.
She kept posting this incredibly ignorant, obnoxious statuses on facebook that I eventually hid her. Well, that and she’s a huge Miley Cyrus/Nickelback/Shinedown/Justin Bieber fan who posted about 3 song lyrics a day, but that’s a different story.

Yea, I got into it a bit with some of my guys as well when they started blowing up my phone with texts, celebrating the sweep
Granted I should’ve held back and not posted on FB, but hey, when your team makes it to the final four and loses a hard fought series, you kind of expect as much.
It is kind of funny though. I’ve seen some people on my feed who I haven’t seen in months. At first I wondered, “Wait, how come I haven’t seen you in a while?” And then I notice the pictures from June and I’m like, “Oh….right…jackasses.”

Best of both worlds
Calgary goes undefeated and both the Stars and Hawks go winless to finish the season, and the Flames sneak into that last playoff spot.

and here’s to ending the season series against Anaheim with a dominant victory. The ducks have a good chance of getting matched-up against San Jose once the playoffs start. If the Ducks steal a W tonight, I believe it will give them some extra motivation going into the playoffs. Do I dare bring up 2009?!? Anyways to agree with Matthew_Taylor I believe this year no matter what obstacle San Jose faces they will come out on the winning side. BUT with the Ducks (or Dallas) you never know. Gotta love how big, clean, legal hits take center stage. I have to think the Ducks will respond better then Dallas did after the shit talk, but I might be giving them too much credit. Like waiting for movie credits to end to see that hidden scene you hear about which ends up feeling more a waste of time then anythingelse, what new thing will Carlyle bitch about after the Ducks lose tonight?

2 pts
I really don’t think the Ducks will do anything ‘over the line’…they’ll certainly take their shots between the whistles but I can’t imagine they’ll play dumb. The Ducks desparately need these 2 points.
If the Sharks can manage to stay out of the pentaly box (which is really the only way the Ducks score these days) they’ve got a good chance of taking those 2 points, be even better if it’s in regulation! Would love to see the Ducks miss the playoffs!
Glad you mentioned this...
I was actually going to ask this on here. Yesterday, Rob Pizzo (Puck Daddy Radio host) tweeted a question basically asking why the hockey world loves Jarome Iginla but hates Joe Thornton. Both have a gold medal, both are without a Cup ring thus far, both former Art Ross winners, and both have approx 1,000 points. Pizzo also pointed out that Joe has a one more notch due to having won the Hart… I’ll say that he gets one more since Joe was drafted two seasons after Iginla.
There were a lot of the same answers… “Canadian market”, “Ignila had no help and had to carry his team to the Finals”… but the one that got me the most was a lot of people said “It’s the way he left Boston”. Can someone clarify this for me? I have been a huge Thornton fan even when he was a Bruin and I don’t remember seeing him leave in a rude or offensive way- he was traded for goodness sakes! My answers to Pizzo were 1. Calgary isn’t always in the playoffs thus cannot be the team’s playoff scape goat. 2. Maybe it’s also because he’s a highly successful African Canadian player, which has been rare not counting the recent young stars (PK Subain, etc).
Can someone shed some light onto this if possible please? What did Joe do to piss off the hockey world so bad by being TRADED to San Jose?
GO SHARKS!!!!!

I don't see it that way
In fact, I’d argue that Jumbo Joe is every bit as popular as Iginla and more talented.
A nicer guy you’ll never meet. One could argue that with so much talent, why hasn’t he won the big one yet, but a lot of super stars don’t end up winning Stanley Cups or other pro sports champoinships.
I also think Joe was made Captain in Boston when he was too young and that he handled the pressures of a huge and critical market like that pretty damn well. And as you said, he didn’t ask to be traded, rather the GM (who was subsequently fired) ushered him out of town.
Joe Thornton is the face of the Sharks in the locker room and in public. Like it or not, he’s ours and we’ve been great ever since he came here. He wants a cup very badly as do we all.
Best trade DW has made so far, and biggest flop for Boston, whether they’ll admit it or not is another story? Perhaps after SJ wins the Cup this year with Jumbo Joe getting the MVP, then he’ll have the final piece on his mantle and put all the haters to rest.
then he’ll have the final piece on his mantle and put all the haters to rest.
Don’t doubt the revisionists. They’ll tell you it’s all because of defense and goaltending. But screw them. A Cup is a Cup is a Cup is a Cup.

What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
There was some perception when Joe left Boston
That he had been mailing it in, and that’s why Boston had failed in the post-season so miserably (gee, sound familiar?).
Joe himself never did anything in particular that warrants any acrimony from anyone in Boston. They’re just Boston fans. If anything, Joe was run out of town. I don’t think he wanted to go. I think he wanted to make it work.
As for Iginla, I know people around here tend to dispute it, but Iginla really never had any legitimate help. The year they went to the Cup Finals, they had a pretty good team, but that was really their best team WITH EVERYONE IN THEIR PRIME. Calgary, as a team, has never held it together. Since that run, Regher and Kipprusoff have definitely come down to Earth a bit, while Iginla has remained pretty consistent. Also, everyone in the world knows the puck is going to him, and he still has found a way to be a 30 goal scorer for, what now, 10 seasons? You can argue whether or not Iginla has been great every year, but he’s not taken a season off.
For that matter, neither has Joe. It’s just that Joe is a laid back guy who’s a bit of a goofball. Iginla is the poster boy for Western Canadian Hockey.

What often goes unspoken...
Is how unselfish Joe Thornton is. He’d rather pass than score, and I cannot think of many other super stars in pro sports like that.
And the worst thing is
That’ll get held against him.
I did appreciate that he got some mention on the top 10 active players we’d like to see win a Cup listing on PD because he really is such a great player on so many levels. With the way he’s playing right now, I think we’ll see some special games from him in the post-season which will start to win the haters over a little.

There will always be haters
But who really cares, you cannot change that. The numbers and champoinships will shut them up. I think Joe got some love when VS mentioned that he’s something like second in total points over the past decade. Pretty hard to hate that.
he makes everyone else around him better (much better), can you say the same about Iginla? Not sure about that. I think Joe could score 40 goals per year easy, but chooses to get his teamates involved, because it’s better for the team. He just gets it!
Maybe chalk that up to the difference between a center and a winger
Not sure there are a lot of wingers in history that can be described as actively making their teammates better, at least not the way centers are usually described in that regard.
I get what you’re saying about the 40 goals per year, but I wonder about some of the semantics. Joe’s been a playmaker for so long, I don’t know if he could now turn and change himself into a pure scorer ala Hossa or Ovechkin or Malkin. As much as Joe’s size is impressive (TWSS!), it’s his mentality that’s so unique. It helps him see the ice and make those impossible passes. But it also seems to abate his urgency to get to the net.
Drew’s mentioned this a lot of about Joe. He’s at his absolute best when he is mentally engaged in the game. He just thinks about things no one else does. And when he’s scoring goals, he’s doing a million little things right: keeping his head up, using his body and not telegraphing his intentions by never quite squaring for the shot and letting off wicked wristers, keeping the puck in shooting positions, always being moving, etc. etc.
I guess I agree in principle, Joe has all the tools to be a 40 goal scorer. But it seems he has to turn a lot of them off to be the point machine that he is.

What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
That is true
And perhaps not in his make up. He’s also doing all of the other things, like getting back on defense, killing penalties, and basically setting the standard for all of the young guys. Perhaps since SJ has so many goal scorers, he doesn’t see any need to shoot more? Whatever the case, I cannot think of many other guys in the league I’d rather have. And who did we give up to get him? Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm and a bag of peanuts? I think the trade speaks for itself and I’m expecting big things from Jumbo in the post season, and perhaps a few timely goals :}
He’d rather pass than score, and I cannot think of many other super stars in pro sports like that.
Any NFL quarterback, ever?
Not what I meant
That’s apples and oranges. A QB’s job is to pass first, where most super stars in the NHL, NBA or MLB’s job is to score. I should have excluded NFL.
Do you get it now?

Nevermind!
I guess you win. And to think I thought you were a good guy!
BTW, stockton and Malone, never one a championship, so I guess they suck like Joe Thornton does?
And to think I thought you were a good guy!
I’m actually quite the “douchebag”. Hardy har har.
In all seriousness though, I think Thornton is very well-respected around the league for his accomplishments. The tendency of many fans like us is to only see the negatives spoken about a player (because they strike a harsher chord) than the positives spoken about a player. Just as an example, the discussion about Burnside’s lack of respect further down the page speaks to that. We see one opinion that conflicts with our own opinion and paint a broad picture that “the media” and/or “everyone else” thinks that way, glossing over the positives that many others say about an individual player/team.
In terms of Iggy vs. Thornton, they’re both excellent players who have had phenomenal careers. Iginla’s performance during the gold medal game in 2002 probably feeds into his reputation as a clutch player (if I remember correctly he had two goals, both of which put Canada into the lead). Your argument of goal-scoring = more publicity is sound in that respect— scoring goals puts the spotlight on players more so than assists, and since Thornton has made his living off of assists, there’s less immediacy there when you’re looking at the highlights and/or boxscore.

If you look at his last season in Boston, he had 0 points and 14 PIMS in 7 playoff games for them. That was the year he was captain, right? I’m sure he took a lot of blame for the loss.
Joe was absolutely crucified for it
And considering some of the other post-season disappointments Boston had, the choker label quickly affixed itself to Joe and has never left. If anything, our own struggles since Joe’s addition have just magnified them. And since we play in the West and no one watches our games, they have no reason to think otherwise. They just assume he played like he did in Boston.

That kills me
Because there is so much more to look at, like the entire seasons body of work. Yet so many fans think they have a right to say that unless you win the Cup, you’re a failure. To me it’s a joke! Could he have done more while in Boston? Sure and the same goes for here is SJ, but other guys have to show up too. It’s extremely rare when one guy takes over a playoff series.
They used to say the same thing about Barry Bonds, remember? He didn’t have grea stats in the post season and never did get over, so to speak. Yet his entire body of work is unmatched (PEDS and all).

I think what everyone forgets is that year, Thornton was playing with broken ribs in the playoffs. BROKEN RIBS. It’s hard enough to walk/skate around with that kind of injury, now add in the fact that everyone on Montreal knew that he had it and so were targeting him for hits specifically. Almost any other player would not have played, but Joe did. And now all people remember is that he didn’t score at all, conveniently blanking out the part where he had severe pain when simply breathing.

I’ve had just bruised ribs from playing football and it didn’t so much hurt to breathe (sneezing was another matter though), but I remember even getting up was a slow and painful ordeal. I couldn’t even imagine the pain of playing a 7 game series of ICE HOCKEY with busted ribs, cortisone or no cortisone.

It probably depends on where the cracked /broken rib is, both in which rib[s] and where on the rib too. I played soccer with mine, it happened playing soccer… elbows to the mid section were no fun for quite a few games Imagine having broken ribs in a sport where the opposing team is coming at you with a stick.
FtF: Welcome to Opposite Season!

Not only that, but this was pre-lockout playoff hockey. You can bet a lot of guys were specifically targeting their hits so that their elbows/shoulders/whatever were directly connecting with Jumbo’s ribs. So imagine 200+ lb men going at 20mph hitting your broken ribs.

Yeah
I was listening to the PD radio podcast and he said something else too. That although Iginla has won the Rocket Richard twice for the most goals if the NHL gave away something for most assists Thornton would have won it three times.

Officially beating a dead horse...
but unfortunately its an accurate dead horse:
Joe Thornton’s Regular Season Career:
1.01 PPG, +136 in 992 games played
Joe Thornton’s Playoff Career:
0.71 PPG, -23 in 91 games played
Jarome Iginla’s Regular Season Career:
0.91 PPG, +62 in 1,104 games played
Jarome Iginla’s Playoff Career:
0.91 PPG, +11 in 54 games played
Iginla’s playoff production is the same as his regular season production. This is the mark of a leader, remaining consistent in all situations no matter the pressure.
Big Joe’s numbers fall off a cliff in the playoffs. A 30% drop in production and the atrocious plus/minus make the “unclutch” label hard to argue.
I want to believe Joe’s performance in the Detroit series last year is a sign that things are changing and a cause for hope this year. But until Joe performs for an entire post season run like he has performed over his regular season career, the bias toward Iginla will remain in effect.
I'd say it's a fair bias too
Cut it any which way, Joe has not had sustained great post-seasons. I think that if the Sharks should experience post-season success through four rounds, it will be because Joe Thornton plays unbelievably huge. He’s a difference maker when he’s big.

Your point is well made
But the stats are a little unfair in this regard. Since Jumbo played that last year in the playoffs against Montreal with cracked ribs and was a complete non-factor, I’d tabulate the PPG in the playoffs as 84, not 91. Yes he played, but probably shouldn’t have. Iginla is a stud and I love his intensity and leadership as well as skill set, but Jumbo’s numbers are not quite as bad and 0.80 per game is actually very strong in the playoffs, albeit, a drop off from his hall of fame regular season numbers. Thanks for taking the time to crunch them numbers

So...
5 Pacific Division titles, highest # of points in the West year in and year out and making the playoffs 14 out of 20 seasons is the stuff of jokes? And since the arrival of DW and Jumbo we’re an “elite team” year in and year out. It comes down to winning a Cup. That will shut him and many other up. Let us hope this is the year!
Have you listened to him on the ESPN Hockey Today podcasts? Ugh, drives me more bonkers than Barry Melrose does.
Waiting for the Cup to come to SJ since 1991...

Also… everyone at ESPN (well the 4 that talk hockey) wants to have their heads up Vancouvers ass but let’s not forget, this is their 40TH anniversary and have yet to hoist the Cup. If they go out in one of the 1st three rounds, will they get the choker label? Doubt it.
Oh well, let them CHOKE on their words when Bettman presents Jumbo with the Cup this June. Believe baby!

I obviously want the Sharks to beat Anaheim, but this game has special significance for me in my fantasy league.
I’m in the finals against my nemesis and I have 5 Sharks on my fantasy tea and he has 4 Ducks on his. A huge blowout win against the Ducks would do a lot to help me win.

by WhatsAMataHari on Apr 6, 2011 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions
We had already hit 4 because Mash has already come up and down twice, but I’m guessing the league determined that Clowe and Nichol’s injuries were legit and the Sharks had a need rather a greed.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
No, Mash is the 4th…Desjardins, McCarthy, Mashinter and now Mashinter again.
It starts after the TDL, so any recalls starting March 1.
Brandon Mashinter was called up March 1st.
Desjardins was called up March 7th.
McCarthy was called up March 17th.
Mashinter was called up again on March 19th.
This makes five.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
That first Mash call up was on Feb 28…he was called up on TDL day.
Nichol has been deemed healthy enough to play so they can’t use ‘emergency recall’ for Mashinter.
All of the NHL, AHL, Capgeek transactions show Feb 28…
Huskins was also put on LTIR on Feb. 28th.
The Sharks website only announces transactions once they’re complete.
I feel misled by the “Recalled from Worcester on March 1 and played 6:01 vs. Colorado” on Mashinter’s NHL player page, then.
I’ll take it either way, but the only places I’ve seen it as 2/28 are Capgeek and the AHL page.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
I don’t follow all this call up send down thing too closely but maybe the callup date 2/28 and the report date or play date 3/1 [the next day] are 2 different dates for book keeping purposes?
FtF: Welcome to Opposite Season!
McC: Don't get it? Try the McWiki wiki.
Who said?
Who said Nichol is ready to play? Nichol said he was good to go, but it would be his first game back from a long IR, so I think the team would have some discretion.
TM was quoted (wtc PD4/6) suggesting that a call up was a possibility, which suggests SJ may have made the move but it was still pending league approval at that time.
Nitty is starting the first time since 1/13, so SJ might prefer going with someone that has been playing regular Braun or Mashinter (big) and save Nichol’s 1st game back for Pho might be better matchup then vs Ana thugs, and 2nd could be clinched by then.
Doesn't matter
Mashinter is either the 4th call up or he is an emergency call up, one or the other id doesn’t matter.

On the other hand
TC can tie tonight.
On the other hand MK did it in 84-5 when there were only 21 teams, only a few years after major west expansion of 4-6 teams, so some really bad teams and a lot more games against them.
TM’s would come, 10 years after the last expansion team added, 30 teams, so fewer games against any really bad teams (unless you’re Van), and 6 years into the salary cap driven parity.
Apples and oranges yes, but I wouldn’t so easily discount it, I think both are significant accomplishments. Give TM his due.
Personally
I’m more than willing to give TM credit, but I’ll save most of my credit for the Sharks these past 3 years. He stepped into an incredibly talented team.

Finally… now that the division is clinched, I think it’s time to give a little to Niitty. I think he’s going to rusty as all heck in the first two period. In the 3rd, he will be better. Hope the D and the forwards can tighten up a bit until he gets his legs under him. If they can turn it up a couple notches, I don’t think we’ll be giving away two points tonight. Sharks have been dominate even when Niemi looked a bit shaky so I’m not too worried.

There are plenty of guys who can fill in if needed
That’s probably why Mash got the call up or perhaps Desjardins will play alongside Cooch. Mayers and Eager are willing combatants, but I think Murray and Parros should square off. After all, Murray is the guy he’s mad at and we all know he can and will take care of himself out there. I’d love to see Nichol play but only if he won’t get hurt again going full speed into the boards or a Duck. Since Anaheim is playing for their playoff lives, nothing should get out of hand until the game is decided. Don’t be worried, it’s just hockey and the Sharks can take care of business, Clowe or no Clowe (although I wish he were in there too). If Nitty is starting I hope he plays well, if for no other reason than to improve his confidence before the playoffs.
very true
but ive never seen someone so angry as clowey when someone touches logan… its like hes a mama lion about to tear the shit out anything that touches her cub haha
by tealstherealdeal92 on Apr 6, 2011 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions
Just his job
Don’t think Parros was/is particularly mad, it’s just his job.
It was mostly Carlyle, and he was probably more pissed off at his team for losing a 2-0 lead, then taking a late, stupid, so obvious the refs had to call it, penalty that cost them getting even one point.
Hopefully, since they really need the points, it stays just a clean game until the end.
On a side note, I hope Torres gets suspended. He should’ve been suspended for his hit on Michalek in the playoffs a few years back. He’s a giant ugly douche, in my opinion.
by Rhapsody in Teal on Apr 6, 2011 2:23 PM PDT reply actions
I agree
I had forgotten Torres had done that. He definitely deserves it.
Van ending the season with 2 losses to EDM and 4-1 & 2-0. Yes they had clinched, but still. Maybe the first, but the not second, maybe they don’t walk on water (see them in the tank?).
I won’t ever forget that. Especially because in the next game of the series, Torres scored the goal that sent it to OT (which the Oilers won and led them to turn around the series). Fucking bastard. Anyone who says he wasn’t targeting Eberle’s head or didn’t have ill intentions has no clue about the guy. It’s his m.o.
