FTF Podcast: The One We Recorded After Game Six

In the thirteenth edition of the FTF Podcast Jason Plank and Matt Taylor break down the San Jose Sharks game six performance against the Detroit Red Wings, analyze the series as a whole, look at what can be tweaked for the upcoming game seven matchup, and attempt to wrap their heads around the fact that this series is now tied at three apiece.

Furthermore, Antti Niemi is given the praise he deserves after his godlike performance last night. Perhaps the most unfortunate part of the game six loss is the fact that his prominent displays of athleticism and ability will be lost on most Sharks fans-- it may be the best performance by a goaltender in Sharks history when one considers the help he got up front, and while we don't make this point during the podcast, it should be noted that he has clearly given his team a chance to win no matter the barrage of shots he faces.

It's not quite the party faithful listeners are accustomed to hearing when the two get together, but you can still hear the bromance running strong underneath it all.

Gear up for game seven folks. It's going to be a doozy.

Another finally crafted podcast

I woke up around 3am, with game 7 standing over my bedside with a Joker-like smile. Stress is running through my veins, with nervous anticipation boiling in my stomach. A mixture of hope, fear and a smidgen of “not again” is present as well. Freaking game 7… the game of games, the crowning moment, the crème de la crème of playoff hockey.

In a strange twist of events, this game happens to fall on my 20th Birthday. 20 years of living, 20 years of Sharks hockey. I think a victory would send me into my 20’s with fervor and astounding happiness. A loss, well…. I’m quite sure I want to figure out what would happen. Whatever happens, happens, I guess.

This is it. The end of the world is nigh. May the Sharks outlast the Juggernaut that is the Detroit Redwings. For the love of sanity, let this be the end of the Red Menace.

Hockey is like a box of choclates. But not really, hockey is way better.

Game 7...

… is going to be enormous either way you look at at, and it will definitely end up being a major pivotal point not only for the Sharks this year, but a pivotal point for the entire franchise as a whole.

Win – The Sharks show the resiliency they have shown all season in that they find a way to win (move on in this case), and there is no other team (imo) left in the PO’s that is as good as Detroit. It can boost their way to end a great 20 years of Sharks hockey with a Stanley Cup.

Lose – 20 years of failure, and ending with one of Epic (with a capital “E”) proportions for good measure. The “choke” label becomes legitimate.

Next podcast

You should talk about how Detroit figured out the NHL 94 cheat code for scoring goals; bring the puck up the right wing, wait for 4 skaters to come cover you, dish it to an open left wing/center/pinching d-man for the one-timer. Seems like most of Detroit’s goals in this series have been of that variety. San Jose needs to find the counter code soon.

Nice

It takes alot of guts making a podcast after that game. Cheers guys!
I stopped sacrificing small animals after that goal, to excited for those few minutes the Sharks had the lead, my bad.
GAME 7! SHARKS!!!

I think you nailed it when you brought up the awkward (my word) line combos.

why mess with what has been working? clearly there was no flow from the drop of the puck, and guys were suimply not in position for most of the game. missing passes, missing assignments, and dump ins that just became easy change of possessions for detroit, i think it is due in large part to breaking up 3 lines that have been working pretty well for the better part of a month.

could they have executed better? yes. could they have had more jump? for sure. but there was a certain rhythm lacking that even in the bad games this post-season was present.

another thought: are they running out of steam? they sure looked to be a step behind all night. line combo issues or being worn down?

oh, and the podcast almost made me jump from my couch out the window.

+1

Of all the coaching snafus by McLellan this series, the decision to change the lines in Clowe’s absence was the worst. You could tell that the chemistry on each line was off. I would have kept the lines the same, except put Eager on the second line with Heatley and Couture and I would have put Ferreiro on the fourth line with McGinn and Nichol. Should Eager do something stupid, I would put Ferreiro on the second line and roll three lines most of the game. It would have looked something like this:

Marleau-Thornton-Seto
Heatley-Couture-Eager/Ferreiro
Mitchell-Pavs-Wellwood
McGinn-Nichol-Ferreiro

Hopefully, Clowe will be back come Thursday. If not, he should roll lines like above.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. No way we should have broken up the lines, especially the 3rd line

Agreed

McLellan overthought it tonight. He also screwed around with the PP’s (Couture up on the top line, Marleau on the 2nd).

Good podcast after the fallout

I think the discussion about Nemo’s performance last night definitely is warranted. He kept us in it and made some incredible saves. I agree that he did look shaky in the L.A. series. But I noticed last year with the Hawks that he works his way into the playoffs and as his team progresses through the rounds, the better he gets. This year appears no different. I’m almost certain that should we win Game 7, Nemo could win goaltending battles against Luongo and steal a game or two for us in the WCF. He’s already proven he has what it takes to win a Cup, it’s just that the 20 players in front of him have to do their part and play solid D and offense.

Reading anything about hockey right now is painful, I woke up early with nightmares and my foot is still throbbing from kicking my chair after the 2nd goal last night (I may need to go see a doctor if it keeps up).

I haven’t listened yet, but I’m sure I won’t feel as miserable afterwards.

So I guess this is what Detroit fans must have endured after we handed them three straight losses. Three up. Three down. It all boils down to one match. There is no reason why game seven shouldnt be another closely contested game. It’s up for grabs really if SJ wants this to end in their favor. Get it boys, it’s right there!

Questions

Thanks for answering my question. I am also happy you didn’t play my voicemail as it was not a direct questions and quite a bit of ranting.

Hopefully Clowe will be healthy and we wont have to worry about ANY line changes.

GO SHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKS!

you guys brought up Scot Nichol and faceoffs

Scot Nichol is running at 49.4% for the playoffs, 54% for this series

G1: 4/9
G2: 5/9
G3: 5/7
G4: 2/6
G5: 2/4
G6: 2/2

According to Derek Zona, the only game the 4th line had more chances for than against was G4, which everyone else crapped the bed but Ferriero/Nichol/Mayers were a +1. Last night, they were awful (worse than everyone else with less PT). I hate to say it, but McGinn has been terrible, and Ferriero is just not a 4th liner. Unless you are going to go 7D, rotate Ferriero to spot for guys on the top 3 lines and save Nichol for the PK and some faceoffs, he probably shouldn’t be in the lineup GWG in OT notwithstanding.
