Predictions for the Western Conference Final from FTF and Around the League
Thanks to the Sharks deciding to drag the Red Wings series little longer, the wait between the Western Conference semifinal and final is very short. The puck will drop in less than three hours. As you pace in your house from room to room wondering what else to do before the Sharks hit the ice again (or if you're taking a nice long nap - my plan for as soon as I hit the "submit" button), it's time to round up some predictions for the series first from the authors of this blog and second from other hockey writing media.
Before we jump into the details, it's no surprise that most of the media is predicting Vancouver to prevail. They were an easy pick before the playoffs started. All that these writers are doing is saying, "look - I told you Vancouver is good!" No one cares the Canucks came within one shot of being eliminated from the 1st round, or that it took them 6 games to overcome Nashville Predators, or that Henrik Sedin has less points than Dan Boyle, or Daniel less than Logan Couture for that matter. All is forgotten, and lo and behold, the Canucks are once again the favorites to win the Cup.
Sounds good. We all know how the Sharks play when no one believes in them.
Fear the Fin Predictions
Jason Plank, aka Mr. Plank
He wrote two detailed articles previewing the series here and here. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend them, as it'll tell you all you need to know about this series. The essence of what our fearless leader is thinking is summarized in this section:
Vancouver is a good team in transition. Limiting turnovers, while always a necessity throughout the course of a hockey game, is essential against Vancouver. They have more speed throughout their lineup than either Detroit or Los Angeles did-- historically that has given an issue for San Jose. Furthermore, the Canucks activate their defense with aplomb and are very aggressive in the offensive zone. Their special teams are excellent, their goal scoring spread throughout the lineup.
In every sense of the word they are a team that will provide an immense challenge for San Jose. And for the second series in a row, this one is likely subject to the flip of a coin.
It's going to be an excellent matchup to be certain, one that will most certainly provide many thrills along the way.
Matthew Taylor, aka Matthew_Taylor
These two teams are so evenly matched, that my first prediction is that this will be a great series. However, I have to refer to the same reasoning that I picked the Sharks over both Los Angeles and Detroit: Depth.
The Sharks forward group gives them a bevy of scoring options, more than even the Vancouver Canucks. The matchup I'm looking forward to watching is how the Canucks match up their defensemen against the Sharks offense.
The Vancouver defense scares me, as they're probably the best top to bottom in the league. Luongo has shown that he's still elite, despite his struggles against Chicago in the first round. I still give San Jose the edge.
I'm taking the Sharks in six games.
Ann Frazier, aka mymclife
The Vancouver Canucks are considered to be the best team in hockey. They were the best at pretty much everything in the regular season, has a defense so deep they can lose their top three and still ice a blueline better than many in the league, and have two players that communicate telepathically. I mean, that last one is just unfair.
But the Sharks have an advantage in the forward group - when you have Joe Pavelski, American Hero centering your third line, you are deep. Antti Niemi, after an October-esque first round against the Los Angeles Kings, has turned it on and has been playing like the goalie that carried the Sharks on his shoulders through the second half of the season. The defense has been bolstered by the team defense preached by Todd McLellan, headed by San Jose's self-proclaimed shut-down center Joe Thornton. These Sharks are built for the playoffs.
The Canucks were the overall best team in the regular season, yes. But I believe the Sharks should get the better of them in the end of a tough, hard-fought series.
Sharks in 6.
Ivan Makarov, aka Ivano M
The key for the Sharks is that they'll start on the road. All the pressure now is for Vancouver to win both at home. If the Sharks will manage to steal one in Canada before making it back to the Bay Area, they'll face a great opportunity to build a strong lead in the series. And I see the Sharks using it to their advantage, especially with emotions from Game 7 still fresh.
I'll go on a limb here and predict that while the games will be close, the luck will favor the Sharks this time. They lose one in Vancouver, but go on to win the rest of the games on the shoulders of Joe Thornton, Ryane Clowe, Joe Pavelski, Antti Niemi (who now won six playoffs series in a row), and who else but Logan Couture. The Sedins will continue to be non-factors in this playoffs as Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau shut them down. Luongo will try hard but it won't be enough - he's still Luongo in playoffs. Ryan Kessler will play like the Ryan Kessler of old - the same Ryan Kessler who had just three goals in 23 playoffs games before this spring (one less than Logan Couture in his first playoffs in the league).
Sharks in 5.
Predictions Around the League
Everybody at Puck Daddy picked Vancouver to win this one. Here is sample of why.
Greg Wyshynski, Editor, Puck Daddy
Ryan Kesler had 11 points on the Vancouver Canucks' 14 goals during their semifinals win against the Nashville Predators. It was one of the single greatest individual efforts in the franchise's playoff history, and there's no reason not to expect he'll bring it again in the conference finals.
But he's going to need help to beat the San Jose Sharks.
Which means it falls on Henrik Sedin, with 5 points and a minus-11 since Game 4 against the Blackhawks, and Daniel Sedin, with 5 points and a minus-12 in the same stretch, to elevate their games in this series for the Canucks to have a chance against a Sharks team that has shown impressive depth this postseason.
It's going to be a long, physical, unpredictable series between two well-matched teams. Special teams will play a significant role. In the end, we'll take the Canucks because of home ice and because Luongo will play a little bit better than Niemi.
Canucks in 7
Sean Leahy, Associate Editor, Puck Daddy
Both teams came close to blowing 3-0 series leads and both won hard fought, emotional Game 7's to move on. Vancouver recovered from their series with Chicago and played well early against Nashville. Can San Jose do the same against the Canucks?
Ryan Kesler is carrying Vancouver at the moment; Kesler against Joe Thornton will be tons of fun to watch. Antti Niemi versus Roberto Luongo has the promise of a great goaltending duel. And despite a combined 19 points through two rounds, will Daniel or Henrik Sedin return to their MVP-calibre play that we're so used to seeing?
Each has shown the ability to slip up when they have the chance to close things out, so we're probably in for seven games of fun here, with each team coughing up the opportunity to win the West, but in the end the Canucks will get the all-important final victory.
Canucks in 7
EPSN's hockey analysts are also betting mostly on Canucks - 5 out of 8 of them picked the Canadian team. Scott Burnside wrote the lengthier preview, and here is why he's giving the edge to Vancouver:
We've been hard on the Canucks, and in fact, we're not sure we've picked them to win a single playoff round since the lockout. Until now. The Canucks' depth up front and Kesler's virtuoso play will carry Vancouver to the Cup finals.
Canucks in six.
The Hockey News is thinking the same thing:
Both teams in the Western Conference final had a golden opportunity to finish off their opponent quickly in the previous round and both let them up off the mat. It seems the Canucks and the Sharks are intent on doing things the hard way, which holds the promise for a lot of wild momentum swings in this series. If the Canucks can somehow get the Sedin twins going and Kesler continues to play like a Conn Smythe Trophy winner, they will be too much for the Sharks to contain.
Canucks in six.
Writing for Fox Sports, Andrew Bensch had this to say:
There are simply too many similarities between these two clubs and any advantages one could think of for one side can be quickly canceled out by a different advantage for the other.
In this season's playoffs both teams have been forced to a Game 7 after going up 3-0, and both won their other series in six games.
It's perfect example of a coin flip. Just so happens my coin landed on San Jose.
Prediction: Sharks in seven.

My favorite part about Burnside's is that he said the Sharks have more forward depth in the article..
Then said the Canucks’ better forward depth would help them win in the conclusion.

That seems to be the pattern in these previews. They all seem to mention how poorly Canucks looked, how they’re one-man horse and yet that doesn’t matter – they’ll win anyway.

He is an asshat and it sure doesn’t help ESPN credibility with their hockey coverage. (If they had any cred to begin with.)

Sharks may not have the best blueline on paper, however I think their strong team defense will come up huge this round, if executed. Nemo will be huge and Luongo will play strong but let in one or two game-changing freebies. Every player on the three top lines has the capability to come up incredibly clutch at any time which makes this team so lethal.

bwahhhhahah
(I was about to post on one of the previous threads when this thread “erased” my bid—not anyone’s fault, lol, just how it goes sometimes).
So, as Mr. Plank wrote in one of the earlier blogs, the tangibles are pretty even between these two teams. What about intangibles? Since “our” turnaround, we’re 1-1 against the Nucks with both games going to OT. The Sharks have more experience and success in OT games in this post-season than the Nucks do. This series might be won for SJ in OT games (oh heart of my heart!). Secondly, I think few ppl outside of SJ realize that, since Jan 15., “we’ve” been as good as the Nucks (or maybe slightly better). I think this lack of realization may work in our favor too. An intangible in favor of the Nucks might be that they have more rest. We have more PO experience, but they have home ice. 3-2 Sharks in the intangible dept. as I’ve counted them.
“Predictions”: while I think we could win a game 7 in VN, I’m going to say that the Sharks best chances of winning are to get this done in 6 or less (as a seven game series might favor the Nucks bc of home ice), so that is my prediction. :]
just checked
we had 9 more points in one less game than VN from Jan. 15th onwards, so yeah… ;)
Of course, you can break that period down into smaller periods and whatnot… I’m just sayin’… it’s lookin’ pretty good.
Go Sharks!
Not a fan of predictions that name a single team
My problem with most media predictions is they assume that the series will only play out in one way, and does not take into affect variables that can swing the play of both teams. What if Kesler manages to become a super man and become too much for the Sharks to defend? What if Marleau really does break out of his funk and finally become a scoring machine? Or Luongo and Niemi putting on a goaltending clinic every night?
I like how NHL.com’s series previews that lists what both teams need to do if they want to win the series, instead of picking a single winner because player X is due to break out of a slump or that team Y’s defense is supposedly deep enough to shut down team Z’s offense.
Go Sharks!

goalies for the sharks
Kevin Weeks and Marty Turco both predicted San Jose winning (no game count) on On The Fly yesterday. Even other goalies think Bobby Lou is a head case.
I really don't feel confident for either team.
My only prediction is this series won’t go to Game 7. It will end in Game 6 one way or another. Here’s hoping it’s with a Sharks win.

This is the ideal scenario for me
In that 1. Sharks are in the FInals. 2. I have no animosity towards TB so I don’t think I would be as angry though the series. But imagine the glee if we get pass Vancouver then face Boston in the finals and win the SC with Thorton winning the Conn Smythe vs his old team.

So we need to get pass the Canucks first. But ever since some Yahoo writer wrote up that scenario, it’s been swimming in the back of my mind.

It’s going to be a long, hard-fought series and I think it will come down to who plays better: Niemi or Luongo, and I think Niemi is the hotter goaltender right now, having played very well throughout last series and coming off a big performance in Game 7.

My thinking is:
Luongo = Niemi
Van. Defense > Sharks Defense
Sharks Offense > Van. Offense.
With that being said, we never know what’s going to happen. Luuu could either be superhuman or collapse at the sight of former Blackhawk, Ben Eager. Marleau could start a streak and Kesler could go cold. Maybe the Sedins will pick up again? You just never know and that’s why the game is played on ice and not on paper.
But just for kicks: Sharks in 7

A lot of analysts keep talking about
how the Sedins will pick it up and the Nucks will win, blah blah blah. But our “cold” players (Heatley, Marleau) could just as easily pick up their game, and they can be just as dangerous as the Sedins. I would like to see the Sedins continue to be cold though haha!
Exactly Marleau and Heater are no slouches when they’re on their game. When everyone on the Sharks are clicking, they’re unstoppable. Hopefully we’ll be able to see them at their best in this series

I have a feeling
that key Sharks players are going to step up this series. I guess we’ll see soon enough though!
Purely out of superstition, I’m thinking Canada (and specifically Vancouver) can’t be blessed two years in a row. Canada’s gold medal should sustain all of The Great White North for at least another season.
Plus Atlanta’s probably packing up to head to north.
So really, Canada, why so greedy? :-)

Why does everyone want Atlanta to move north?
Randy Hahn - "The Man With The Big Butt - Patrick Marleau - we like him and we cannot lie..."
Didn’t say that I did. Just that it’s very likely that it will happen. Really, Kovalchuk’s move to New Jersey was indicative of the state of the Thrashers as a franchise. It’s a shame, because there were (are) some really awesome fans there. However, they don’t have enough to satisfy the owners, who are just some of the ones suggesting the Thrash should move.

Just went crazy with some teal hair dye and attacked myself and my husband with it. This match up has me nervous. Mainly because the Sedin twins scare me.

hey..
I understand. I’ve been thinking back to that 5-4 OT loss of “ours.” I remember that our team turned up to a new level there at the end of the game. I’m thinking that that might happen again in this series: the Super Sharks! hehe.
The team we have now has overcome a lot of adversity. I literally am creeped out by the Sedin twins. Some of the passes they are able to make to one another are just scary, but from the sound of it they’ve been cold for a bit.

I'll go with Sharks in 6!
I think the Sharks and Nucks are pretty evenly matched with the top two lines and goal tending (although I think Niemi is a little better. I might be biased though). The Sharks have more forward depth, and I think that will be the key.
Vancouver’ obviously has the better defensive unit, but that doesn’t mean ours is weak. I noticed on Yahoo Sports that one of the “experts” (I forget who off the top of my head) was talking about the Sharks D-men and mentioned Boyle and Murray as being solid, but didn’t make any mention of Vlasic. Vlasic is highly underrated and overlooked, in my opinion, by people outside of the Sharks fan base. The Sharks D is better than most people think. How they play in this series will obviously be a big part of the series.
I didn’t get to watch much of the Wings series unfortunately because of school stuff. How was the play of Wallin and Demers? I think they need to step up and play a great series.
I’m very confident in the Sharks against the Nucks! It wont be easy though!
Is it 5 yet!?
GO SHARKS!!!!
Wallin played well
Demers? I think he played pretty well too—I’ll let someone else with an eye to statistics go into it a bit more if they want.

I agree.
The Sharks need to be extremely physical against the Nucks and wear them down. It’s going to be a very physical series. I personally think that this series is going to be more entertaining and exciting than the last one against the Wings. Cant wait for it to start!
After the 5-4 game that ended in a SO, the first thought in my head was “this needs to be a match up in the playoffs”.

Kesler has a monster series, but the Sedins remain mercurial. If they can’t do the heavy lifting, I don’t think Ryan Kesler is quite ready to be THE MAN. He’s a damn fine player, and he’s going to give us problems, but hockey is a team sport, and Kesler solo is good enough to beat Vancouver, but we are a different animal. We’re deeper, and we’re going to put pressure on the Canucks lineup top to bottom.
I think we’re well equipped to shut down the Sedins, and if we can play Kesler’s line to a stalemate, this series looks an awful lot like SJ/Det. Whichever team is healthier wins the series, and health and depth are on our side.
GO SHARKS!

It's a series of "what ifs"
But, you have to like the Sharks chances. Even if they drop both of the first two on the road, they get to come home for two more – where they have been lights out apart from LA game 2. If they split in Vancouver, even better. If they can win both on the road? Oh boy.
The big questions involve: 1) Can Kesler keep it going? 2) Will the Sedins show up? & 3) Will Thornton & Marleau get hot at the right time? Luongo vs. Niemi is in there somewhere too, but I think that matchup is not as important.
Kesler is probably going to continue his hot streak, but he’s not going to get much help. One thing about Joe & Patty is that, although inconsistent, they have shown that they have the capability of stepping up their play to a high level. The Sedins have, to this point, not shown that yet. Edge Sharks.
After the top 3/4 guys, you have a battle of Burrows, Raymond, Higgins, Torres, Lapierre, & Hansen against Heatley, Clowe, Couture, Pavelski, Wellwood, & Mitchell. The Canucks are speedier here, but the Sharks are far more balanced when it comes to personnel.
The Sharks D corps have a legitimate #1 guy (Boyle) and a bunch of #3/#4 guys (considering White has been great, and Wallin has stepped up his play) while the Canucks have the equivalent of three #2s and three #3s. Edge to the Nucks, but I don’t believe they have as much of a defensive edge as most “experts” say they do.
Please don't eat the unicorn.
Winning: n. "An ongoing cycle of competence and achievement in various endeavors. You cannot win; there is only the continuous action of winning."
No Respect
I think people predict based on who they want to win. Ask a fan of any team and they will tell you, polygraph and all, that the refs favored the other team in a loss.
That being said, I think there are a lot of positives for the Sharks that seem to be ignored by the media. It is just too easy to pick Vancouver because of their sexy stats.
In the end, how well the teams fared against handicapped competition is the best predictor to go with. I’m sorry, but Vancouver’s accomplishments should be discounted due to the level of competition. That makes this a lot closer than many think. Beating Detroit should count for something, but it doesn’t seem to impress anyone.
To me, the Canucks feel a lot like the Sharks from last year, and the Sharks look eerily like the Blackhawks did last year. There isn’t a large gap between these teams, so intangibles come into play. I really like the Shark’s intangibles.
Sharks in seven.
As a Hawks fan I can see what you are saying...
you guys do have our goalie after all…
I do agree that beating Detroit should count for something. IMHO, both the Sharks and the Wings are better than the Canucks. And how the national medias just sailed by this is beyond me. I love my Hawks, but honestly, what were they going to do when 1/2 the consisted of guys who played in the AHL this year? And the Preds would be a monster team if they had a consistent 40 goal guy. And the Canucks did not have an easy go in either series. The Sharks have played better on a tougher road. I really like the way Thornton has been playing and think he will balance off Kesler. I like your defense to stop hockey’s version of the Winklevoss twins.
Sharks in 6
Because the Canucks are so good on paper (and because i’m super biased), i feel like I have to add a game or two to what my real prediction is, so i’ll say Sharks in 6.
I think our top line will play about even with the Sedin line, our third line will play solid defense and pot a few goals, and our 2nd line will run wild scoring goals like crazy.
Stars of the series: Our whole 2nd line, Ian White, and Patrick Marleau.
why are some calling kesler the best player in the NHL?

Sharks in six...
I think theyll drop the first two in Van, just because of two things. One being the lack of rest they get inbetween series, and the other is adjusting. We saw a LOT of it tonight. There needs to be some adjustments to compensate for Vans speed. I think theyll be rested enough to close out the series after making final adjustments for the Van series on Weds.

Northwest vs. Pacific
Yeah, yeah. People say “don’t use regular season statistics when talking about playoff prognostications.” But just look at the Northwest division teams versus the Pacific ones. Sharks had to endure many more games against teams that were much more competitive than the Nucks.
Sharks division opponents finished 4th, 6th, 7th, and 9th in the WC
Nucks division opponents finished 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th in the WC
I think a big theme with this series is gonna be mental toughness. And I think the Sharks may have a bit more of it, having had to deal with a tougher slew of rivals during the season. Even though they were out of the playoff picture, they snapped after that six game losing streak and went on a tear. Plus, something feels a lot different about that locker room compared to last year’s locker room.
I’m tempted to say 6, but I think this will go the full tilt. Sharks in 7.
The weak division argument has some merit. But if you look at the Canucks record vs the pacific they were 13-5-2 – the best winning % out of anyone.
Still, regular season stats mean nothing at this time of year

I think it’s their time and this year will be their coronation. I have the utmost respect for the Sharks and expect for this to be a tightly contested series. I think the difference is the Nucks have a little bit more firepower, and Luongo just seems to be on a mission this year. I expect for him to get a bit of revenge on Niemmi this year.
Hmm..
Hard to make a prediction, but I think the Sharks will drop game 1. Not sure what happens after that but the Sharks will definitely lose game 1.
