This is an easy post to write.

Game three, 2-0 series deficit, embarrassed on Wednesday, penalties galore, lack of details, historical numbers telling us the high seed has won 92.3% of series when leading 3-1 in a series.

Ladies and gentleman, the Sharks are staring right down the barrel of a must-win. And regardless of what the scoreboard reads tonight at roughly 9:00 PM Pacific, they'll be facing another one of these fickle games again on Sunday afternoon.

Ah yes, the perils of playoff hockey. Ever present in our cerebral cortex, itching and clawing their way forwards as they drive the average Joe to insanity.

There's been a fair amount of discussion on the penalty differential this series, and while the majority of you know my stance on officiating (you play the hand you're dealt, calls even out over the course of a series, keep your head down and play through it's what the best teams do), the subject deserves to be broached again.

There's no doubt Henrik Sedin's high stick on Joe Thornton deserved a four minute minor. No doubt it could have changed the pace and flow of the game. However, to use that as a crutch to explain away the large issues plaguing this team right now seems quite shortsighted to me. For starters, the San Jose Sharks aren't the first team in the history of the NHL to be at the whim of the officials-- every single team throughout the League deals with it during their respective postseasons. It is part of the human element in sports, and until that goes away when our eventual robot overlords begin their reign over mankind and hold daily Colosseum esque sporting events (Ben Eager-- top ten pick), that's here to stay.

Star-divide

You're not the first, you're not the last, no one is out to get you, there is no grand conspiracy. It's life, and while it may be lemons, it's what this existence always has been and always will be.

The mark of a good team is how they respond to it, how they find a way to win despite variables that are out of their control. Move your feet and drive to the net. Because at the end of the day if a hockey team and its fanbase is focused on the officiating, that opposing team across the way is going to have a much easier time executing their gameplan throughout the tilt.

Speaking of which, HP Pavilion is having an Orange Out tonight. T-shirts will be handed out at the door... okay okay, everybody calm down. I know you're excited but screaming like you just got selected for The Price Is Right isn't going to make them get here any quicker. I know a free t-shirt is pretty swe-- oh. Yeah, I see, that makes sense now. I know, teal is the teams primary color right? That's a good point. Carry on then.

Honestly, not a big fan of the Orange Out either. It looks strange and makes me feel like I should be buying an economy sized bucket of hair gel before vacationing in South Jersey. That being said, there's nothing worse than one of these events breaking down because the majority of the attendees decide not to wear the assigned attire. Show the orange some love like Kel Mitchell and get HP Pavilion popping.

In terms of adjustments from the first two games, there's so many to count it's hard to really come up with anything that stands out as one area that needs the most improvement. Staying out of the penalty box, controlling the neutral zone, covering the backdoor pass, hiring Oompa Loompas to act as ushers for the Orange Out, getting the second and third lines going, slowing the tempo and pace of the game, getting a big performance from Niemi, effective zone clears that punish Vancouver's D from pinching to keep plays alive, thawing out a frozen clone of Mike Ricci and inserting him onto the third line, grinding the Canucks down along the boards, dumping the puck in and hammering Vancity's D on the forecheck, covering the slot when the Canucks are cycling, getting traffic in front of Luongo, keeping the puck behind the net where Luongo has looked uncomfortable, going low to high with your passes in the offensive zone, putting shots on net from off angles...these are all areas of opportunity for San Jose.

But somehow, someway, they just have to find a way to win the game. It might be a big kill in the third period, it might be the third line starting to come around, it might be a clean open ice hit in the neutral zone early that gets it all started. Or it might be something as simple as the mentality going into game seven against Detroit:

I do not believe in heart, guts, gore, a will to win. I do not believe in these adjectives because they are used to explain an outcome that is dependent upon a myriad of factors. Hockey is a game that is subject to so many breaks and bounces; hockey deserves a much wider brush than the narrow bristle it will inevitably be painted with. A game such as this deserves to be played again and again until the end of time. That is why I do not believe in heart, guts, gore, a will to win.

But I believe in them tonight. Because tonight, these are the things the players must believe controls their fate.

>> Sharks Gameday: Game 7

Despite overlooking some pretty basic facts about the sport of hockey (primarily the fact that you ultimately do not control your own fate-- the outcome of a game is a product of numerous variables that cannot be adequately understood with a third grade level of psychological simplification that "explains" an extremely complex and fickle organism such as a playoff game in absolute terms), this is a good mentality to have. Ignore everything, hell, ignore reality, and just know that if you execute your gameplan correctly you will succeed.

As we said yesterday, if both teams bring their A games for the rest of this series every game is going to be a coin flip. They're too evenly matched to expect otherwise.

But all it takes is one to get the train back on the tracks.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Marleau, Boyle, and Couture.

SHARKS!!!

Crash the net! Run Luongo over. Hit the puck holder! No more skating by and watching the Canucks play hockey! Done with the dump and chase! Keep the puck, pass it back to the D, hell, even to the goalie. The past 2 games the Sharks dont have the puck long enough to set up, part is because the speed of VAN but a bit of keep-away will help establish some Shark momentum. But really I think the win will really come down to this…

Demers?

Could someone please tell me what the latest on him is? Last I heard was TMC wanted Huskins to be ready in case of a game 7, so he sat Demers in game 1 (which sounded retarded at the time and in retrospect was clearly just bologna). I’m assuming he is in fact injured since he was not in the lineup for game 2? Huskins hasn’t been any more horrible than any other D-man, but hopefully Demers will be back tonight as he adds a little mobility to the offense and not-suck to the defense.

I'm pumped again

So yesterday was my heartache day but yesterday is gone and today I’m PUMPED for the game! We are far from out of this series… one win changes everything. We thrive from adversity, we are scrappy and will claw our way back up. It’s time to stick with the game plan (you hear that Ben Eager? No classless BS tonight!) and just pepper Luongo with shots. Time to make him a basket case again.

This will be the first playoff home game of the season that I will not be attending tonight (although I will be there Sunday for game 4) so if you will be there… BE LOUD!!!! I want my windows to shake from our loud you guys are from my TV. I will wear the orange shirt I got last season (I think) that is 3 sizes too big for me to join in the Orange Out. :)

GOOOOO SHAAAAARKS! Just win… do it for you, do it for your team and do it for Joe!

TMac didn’t seem to be nearly as pissed off about Eager’s play as most of us here. I think he liked his “fire” so sadly, I wouldn’t be too shocked if he was still playing. Luckily, if the Sharks play like we know they can, Eager’s antics will be irrelevant.

Endless shots on Bobby

We have not put enough pressure on him yet, he is beatable and proves to be shaky in the post season. We just need to play our game tonight and not get distracted by all the bullshit flying around.

by BB129 on May 20, 2011 9:00 AM PDT reply actions

Yup

He hasn’t been nearly tested as much as Quick and Howard were in the earlier rounds. That credit is owed to the Canucks clogging up the neutral zone. The Sharks need to make him earn his wins and his hoopla.

I feel something good brewing here

Back on home ice, the Sharks know what is at stake, the fanbase is fired up (some have jumped ship, but those fans wouldn’t be at the game anyways and we don’t need them here), there is a new found dislike for the other team, everyone will be wearing Ducks colors…needless to say, HP should be an insane house tonight!

As for the officials, they watched the tape, they know they blew two huge calls. I don’t think they will anymore. So we move on from that. What is in front of us are two games, the first starting tonight. Win those two games on home ice, and you have yourself a completely even series. It is as simple and as complex as that. Just get it done. Go Sharks!!!

Thank goodness there's a Sharks game

I could care less if it’s a 20 minute effort or that fabled 60 minute effort (it doesn’t exist… NO team pulls it off)… just get that win. Play clean (I’m looking at you Eager), but play hard. And hopefully it’ll be to the tune of a lot of goals. A lopsided win would be really nice to be honest.

Sadly, my hockey focus strays from the Sharks today. Some douche Canadians (not Correy Perry) are trying to buy the Thrashers and move them to freakin’ Winnipeg. If that goes through, absolutely nothing will brighten my day. Good gods, I hope that doesn’t happen. Please excuse me while I go mope in the corner…

Bettman's an idiot

He only cares about the Yotes. They’re staying, and he doesn’t give a shit about Atlanta. It pisses me off, as you can see haha.

Especially because it seems like a bunch of hockey fans are complete douche bags when it comes to this sort of thing. They like to criticize Atlanta and say it doesn’t “deserve” a team, and that non-hockey markets shouldn’t be tried out. For such a great sport, there are a lot of close-minded fans. If the team does move to Winnipeg, I wish them nothing but financial disaster, sitting at the bottom of the standings, and reinstating Don Waddell to screw up high draft picks.

Agreed.

I’m sick of that BS. I was reading some Canadian article the other day and they said something to the effect of “Real hockey fans feel pain everytime a team from a place there is no snow or ice wins the cup… teams from places like like Atlanta, North Carolina, and Anaheim”. Seriously? Real hockey fans? That’s why LA/SJ/ANA are 3 of the top teams in game attendance, breaking records every year. I read that about a year ago on CNN.

Why don’t we just call it what it is and let everyone know you’re a piece of elitist “Only Canada deserves hockey” garbage?

Winnipeg failed once. Give it 10 years, it’ll fail again. ATL is the 3rd most populous city in the US, Bettman would be an idiot to give that team up, either.

Yeah

And Atlanta had a team that “failed” last time too. That’s actually wrong. Again, it was an idiot owner who ran out of money. He sold it to a guy who moved the team to Calgary.

Frankly, the Atlanta Spirit Group (people who own the Thrashers and Hawks) are probably the worst owners not only in the NHL but in all of the N. American pro-sports. It’s the reason this team may end up moving.

It baffles me why the NHL didn’t ever step in and try to fix this. How pathetic is the ownership? I’d rather have Gary Bettman and Colin Campbell as owners.

Don’t worry about the Canadian press. Stick with guys like Bob Mckenzie. He’s basically the only guy I would read if I want to read about hockey.

Shake it off Sharks

anyone who knows these tremendous wrastlers has to be at least at the top of the hill, if not on the way down. I miss Jimmy “the mouth of the south” Hart . He would have loved being Eager’s amanger.

It made me think of drawing comparisons to Hulk Hogan and the Sharks. Remember when it looked like it was over for the Hulk in a match. As he laid lifeless by the ropes, his head would give a little twitch, then a little bigger twitch. Then he robustly shake the cobwebs out. if there’s one thing I know about Pro wrestling, you did not want to be in the ring when he finally could see straight again.

Time for the Sharks to do a little head shaking themselves. dust your britches off and play Hulk Hogan hockey.

I really liked Mr. Planks quote from the Game 7 gameday – “A game such as this deserves to be played again and agian until the end of time.” Perfect. Actually, that whole article was dead on. Really hoping for a game 7 in this series – That would be a classic.

two quick observations; first Eager’s time in the box was an abnormality. he plays physical and your going to need players punishing the Van d-men in the corners, (Benji -take note: the corners, not in borderline late hits on one of the other teams stars in the neutral zone – bad idea.)

Secondly, while it pains me to admit, Joe Thorton is playing some awesome hockey. Never liked the guy, but damn he’s clever with the puck. Look for Jumbo to have a multi point game tonight.

Lastly, the fans in the Tank will be smelling some blood – as good a seventh man as there is in hockey.

The orange shirts are weird – Teal, believe it or not would have been more intimidating. Thanks for moving the game time to 6pm PCT.

The speed, the incredible skill, the almost non stop action, (Boy I hope they don’t keep adding TV time outs), the debates in front of the goalies crease, holding your breath on a breakaway, chronically complaining about the rrefs – who are always out to get us. When will the Sharks realize that Beating the Red Wings does not mean you won the Stanley Cup. They need to wake up and start playing Hockey. Forget the Ref’s, forget the last game. Move on and play one game, one period and one shift at a time. Go SHWINGS.

Canucks fan says:

I’m surprised one of the “adjustments” needed for a Sharks win did not include something about Todd McLellan needing to realize that putting a goon on the ice when the Twins are using their superpowers is a bad idea. When wondertwinpowersactivate it’s likely best to send out a player with a) defensive skills, and b) no psychotic desire to kill things.

Seriously poor coaching by TM in game 2. He is more to blame than Eager for the loss because he just kept putting him out there even after he totally lost his composure. Like the tigers and Siegfried. Dont blame the tiger for beign a tiger.

by angled on May 20, 2011 10:55 AM PDT reply actions

I think TM was trying to get a message to his second and third line. Whether that was poor coaching or not will show in tonight’s game, rather than in Wednesday’s game. I think that book is still to be written.

@San Jose : As a Canucks fan, I feel your pain. The Shark’s lack of discipline on Wednesday is what killed the Canucks against Chicago over the last two years.

It was funny

watching Eagers temper tantrum stomping around the ice like a very overgrown child. I’m not surprised, he hates the Canucks from his Hawk days and Eager and Bieksa had a pretty spirited fight during a line brawl. This was the same line brawl when Burrows repeatedly yanked fist-fulls of Duncan Keith’s hair, an incident that intensified the Hawks / Nucks feud.

Thank you.

I feel like people were a little to hasty to condemn him after game 2. I looked up some of his performance for the B’Hawks in their cup run last year out of sheer curiosity. He did well, scored a lot of goals and played the enforcer role, similar to Clowe, just not as experienced. I think he could be a HUGE asset to this team if they can just get him to play a little smarter. Tough, fast, and when he gets going, he has some real good handywork with the stick:

Maybe Eager needs to be pushed up to the third line to spark them? Or maybe he needs to push papers in the press box. Either one is a better alternative to his penalties last game.

However, I do fully expect the Sharks to gain their composure and make a better game of it. I expect them to quit taking the stupid penalties and commit to their offensive game. They need to show more confidence in their D and sustain pressure in the O. Here is to a good one, cheers!

Exactly right.

When San Jose allows 2 or fewer goals there record coming down the stretch was 16-1-1. It’s about team defense and everyone giving it their all. Except Ben Eager, because we don’t need more penalties, we need more PP.

Team defense needs to be the collective priority. TEAM being the key here, too often guys have been lazy with their clearing attempts and seem to prefer getting themselves out of trouble with a lazy pass up the boards rather than patiently finding someone for a clean break-out. We beat ourselves up with this. However, your both right, D needs to be their main commitment, success with that will lead to sustained offensive pressure.

Come on, let's sober up, shall we?

The San Jose Sharks have lost five of their last six playoff games, with the latest game being a laugher. The Sharks had trouble eliminating the Red Wings with a three – zero series lead at their disposal, and now we are trying to delude ourselves into thinking they have a chance against a team like Vancouver, being two – nothing in the hole, devoid of one positive to take away from any stretch of their so-called ‘play’?
The writing is on the wall – come on, have we not seen this well-rehearsed spring script enough to know what is coming next? I for one, having being systematically tortured by this team since the early 1990’s, am having a very difficult time justifying any further loyalty to a team that simply seems incapable of digging down deep to deliver the only thing that matters, the Stanely Cup.

We have been swimming these wintry depths for years, succeeding at survival by feeding only upon perennial minnows of sustenance... will we ever get to sink our great white teeth into this so-called Stanely's feast, so that we may finally slay our insatiable hunger in frenzied celebration?

And it’s hard to argue with you and the facts. But part of being a true fan or fanatic is supporting your team through it all (wins & losses). It’s as if they become part of your fabric or make up. That said, giving up at two games is pretty pathetic. I mean I could see your pessimism if it were 3-0 and we stink it up tonight. But haven’t we seen all year that this team has an uncanny ability to come back from adversity and be incredibly resilient? That said, I’m not going to throw in the towel until it’s 3-0. Don't jump yet..

It’s only two games in. Yes, Van is probably the best team in the league and winning 4 of 5 sounds impossible due to the last two games. But one win is very possible, and that is all we need right now! We will worry the next 3 when we get there. One shift at a time, one game at a time (cliche I know) is the focus of the team and should be the focus of the fans too. Lets dominate one shift, then a game and then we will do it again. It’s far from over my friend. Stick with em.

SHARKS!!

Past performance is not indicative of future results

Exactly! If we win game 3 everything that has happened up to that point can be thrown out the window. And if we win game 4, then it’s all even and a brand new series.

by douchebags on May 20, 2011 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

And

If you really think about it the Sharks usually give their best effort when their backs are up against the wall. They know that if they lose this game it’s all but over. So if they give it their all for the entire game and still lose, then Vancouver is just better and I can live with that. But I expect their A game tonight.

If people read writing on the wall...

Vancouver and San Jose would have swept earlier because Chicago and Detroit decided to pack it in because of the “inevitable.” If you’re gonna hate on your own team so much whenever they come across adversity, do yourself a favor and stop caring.

There’s a reason they play to win 4.

This series has frustrated me so much already

I’ll just say this, if the penalty differential and those missed calls went against Vancouver, they would have had a heart attack and it would have been all over the media with Sedin’s face bleeding on your TV screen. I’m tired of the media, the officiating, Vigneault, and the Canucks players and their antics. I really do have this us against the world mentality at this point, and who cares. Go Sharks! Make this happen! We believe and we know you do to, so shock the world and win this series! It starts tonight!

by Ronnibily on May 20, 2011 12:53 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

SERIOUSLY.

Screw the Nucks, they think they’re all high and mighty but had the tables been turned and they were on our end of the rope, they’d be complaining and making a fit of it more than any SJ fan.

I hate gingers so much. SO MUCH.

by Shark Bait on May 20, 2011 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

You went there?

Yes – Canucks fans would probably b*tch about the penalty differential, and like you we’d probably start seeing conspiracy theories.

The one thing the ACTUAL Canucks (not the fans) have repeatedly said was that they respect the Sharks as a team and that they recognize that the Sharks haven’t played their best game yet.

B*tch all you want about the Canucks fans – some of us deserve it – but recognize that the officiating is in Campbell’s and Bettman’s hands and realise that we KNOW you have a good team. We’re just wondering where they went.

by niceas on May 20, 2011 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I've found most of the Vancouver fans

To be classy and professional with their outlook to this series. There is no denying how good your team is, espeicially when you consider that some 13 different players have contributed to the defense this year. Leader of the pack from start to finish, no easy task and no joke. You’ve been waiting an awfully long time for a champoinship (40 years) so I can imagine how painful those Stanley Cup Finals losses were in 1982 & 1994. Whatever happens in this series ( and I hope the Sharks prevail ) I want to see inspired hockey from the Sharks like we did against Detroit. I can live with the results if I believe San Jose has given it their all.

by douchebags on May 20, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Well said

About all we can ask from our teams is that they show up and play their best. I feel for Sharks fans as I don’t believe that they’ve shown up yet.

by niceas on May 20, 2011 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I respect Vancouver

But some of your fans are ridiculous. To each their own I guess, I know there are some retarded Sharks fans too badmouthing the Wings last series like they were a crappy team (and then they showed up games 4-7).

Guess my real resentment is aimed towards the bandwagon fans; ALL bandwagon fans.. Vancouver’s waited 40 years for a Cup, twice as long as the Sharks. Both deserve to win it, but the blowout in level of play so far has led to so much frustration with nothing to rebuttal with… hope tonight changes things.

by Shark Bait on May 20, 2011 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Regarding some of the Vancouver fans

Yep. I’m with ya. Some of the Canucks fans and some of the Sharks fans are cut from the same cloth. Sadly the internet encourages the lowest common denominator to ‘have their say’.

by niceas on May 20, 2011 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I want to see the Sharks win

This “choker” label that’s been on the Sharks for many years has gotta come off this year. But the Sharks aren’t making it look like as if they’re going to do so. Winning is the only choice for them.

The “choker” label is only used by idiots. And I stand by that, regardless of who it offends.

You think the Sharks are “chokers”? Then you are an idiot and your opinion on hockey is mostly irrelevant.

It was pretty funny in the last game when Niemi gave up a fat rebound and was sprawling in front of a wide open net. Vancouver collected the puck and I thought they would surely score. Then the announcer said “Erhoff with the puck” and immediately I felt relaxed. Then his shot hit the glass.

I hope Mclellan plays Braun tonight over Huskins. We really need to get our offense going.

With control of the matchups at home, it shouldn’t be much of a risk playing Braun; besides he looked great in the game he played against the Kings. Maybe he’ll pull a Tyler Seguin for us.

by Khaaz on May 20, 2011 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

I totally agree. Braun actually gets shots through, which we really need right now.

I'd take a Braun for a Huskins tonight.

I know Husky has a Cup and the experience but I would like to see Braun in there tonight. His puck moving skills, hard shot and all around raw talent makes him a bigger asset than Huskins IMO.

Bobby Lu & Being Physical

Got to get serious pressure on Bobby Lu and he will cough up rebounds and crack like an egg.

How about hitting someone in a Canucks uniform? We are the bigger team and they are kicking our butts, whats that all about Sharks?????

If Eager gets one stupid penalty, send his butt to the locker room.

by The Sear on May 20, 2011 2:33 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

It would be a mistake to make Eager ride the pine tonight. HOWEVER…keep his leash short, eh TMac? He took some stupid (and I’m being generous by using that word) penalties but you can’t say that he didn’t play balls out. Let him play but let him cool off for a while if he starts acting like a moron again. He needs to play on the edge but as soon as he goes over it, shower time, Eags. If he can bring the same energy minus the stupidity, he could provide the kick in the ass that the Sharks need tonight. Whatever happens, go Sharks!

You're right

I think I shouldn’t have mentioned the c-word in my previous post. Sorry about that, guys.

It won’t stop me from worrying, though. I am not satisfied with the way the Sharks have been performing the past several games. Hopefully they’ll overcome their struggles tonight and come out with a win.

And I hope my dad doesn’t laugh at me after I watch this game. I hate it when he tells me that “(insert team name here) is done” EVERY time a team I’m rooting for loses a postseason game.

by yoshifan on May 20, 2011 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

That happened to me too. But the Sharks winning series against the Kings and Red Wings gave me some good luck.
