Sharks win vital game three, trail series 2-1
They say that a team is never in trouble in a series until they lose a game at home. Trailing the Vancouver Canucks two games to none in the Western Conference Finals, the Sharks surely didn't want to put themselves in an even more difficult position.
Indeed, the Sharks did start the game the same way they started game seven against Detroit; they had their legs, they skated hard and they took hold of the game.
"Obviously the crowd gives you a bit of a lift but the way we played was just a lot of energy. We skated very well, got some 2 on 1's, some breakaways, which was very different from the last two games," Clowe said. "It was us putting pucks in places where we could get them back, executing, the power play was sharp early. I thought it was more of us just playing our game, the jump and energy we had was different than the last few games."
As a result of their dominance in possession, the Sharks were able to draw Vancouver into ten minor penalties in the game. The power play had really been one of the only things working for San Jose through the first two games of the series, converting at a 46% rate after tonight. Three out of the four total goals San Jose scored tonight came from the man advantage, proving to be the difference in the game.
Two of those goals came in the first period, but the most important score came in the third. 6:46 in Joe Thornton, who had three assists on the night, found Dan Boyle on the point. Boyle put a low shot through traffic that beat Roberto Luongo five-hole.
"That power play was the difference at the end of the night," stated Sharks coach Todd McLellan.
Thornton and Boyle weren't the only Sharks stars to have big nights offensively. Patrick Marleau chipped in three points of his own including a power play goal four minutes in to start the scoring and a beautiful breakaway goal in the second.
Marleau, who has been the focus of much of the hockey world after some less than complimentary words dolled out by now analyst Jeremey Roenick, has been on a scoring spree since Game Seven of the Western Conference Semifinals. Marleau now has five goals in the last four games, four of which have come in this series against Vancover. He was, however, quick to point out that his increased statistical production after Roenick's criticism was nothing more than a cooincidence.
"Things are just starting to go in. I'm playing with some pretty good players, obviously the best passer in the League," Marleau said while nodding to Thornton on his left. "I'm getting to some good areas, he's finding me, and pucks are starting to go in."
The offense wasn't the whole story tonight, as Vancouver had seven power plays of their own during the game. During a stretch in the second, the Sharks were forced to kill 4:05 straight in penalties, 1:55 of which were of the 5 on 3 variety. For the majority of that sequence the Sharks looked to Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Douglas Murray to come up big in a critical situation.
They were up to the task. Although Pavelski had trouble winning draws, the three Sharks on the ice played some of the most determined hockey seen from anyone this postseason. Vlasic made some crucial plays of his own, but was quick to compliment his fellow penalty killers after the game had ended.
"The two guys with you out there with me on the 5 on 3 were diving all around me," Vlasic said. "I just had to be out there to pick up the loose pucks."
Antti Niemi, who had another impressive showing in nets for San Jose, agreed with Vlasic regarding the penalty kill's efficiency.
"I thought we were really compact with our three guys there, and we wanted to keep them on assignment," Niemi said. "We did a good job of that. Most important thing [for me] is to know which guys are on the ice and understand what they're trying to do.
Vancouver did end up getting two power play goals on the evening, both of them coming on a five-minute major penalty to Jamie McGinn. McGinn, who had already received a boarding major this postseason against Los Angeles in the first round, tracked Aaron Rome through the offensive zone a leveled him in the corner. The legality of the hit was debated, but the severity was not. Rome was down on the ice for what seemed like an eternity, struggling to get up and skate off.
Rome wasn't McGinn's only victim of the evening; former Shark Christian Ehrhoff left the game in the second period as a result of another McGinn check. When asked about the possibility of Ehrhoff or Rome missing the next game, Canucks Coach Alan Vigneault was short, but to the point.
"Yes," Vigneault informed the media. "Both."
Despite the fact that the fourth line accounted for three penalties tonight-- Desjardins had back to back penalties in the middle of the second that led to the aforementioned 5 on 3's, and Jamie McGinn had a five minute boarding major which put the Sharks in an uncomfortable position for the last eight minutes of the game-- the fourth line contributed positively for the first time all series when they weren't in the penalty box. McLellan chose to scratch stalwart Scott Nichol along with maligned forward Ben Eager and rookie Benn Ferriero in favor of Andrew Desjardins, Jamal Mayers and the Jamie McGinn, with the trio accounting for some notable scoring chances in the Canucks zone.
"It's an emotional game. When you come out hard and push the pace the other team gets back on their heels. They did that to us [in Vancouver] and we did that to them tonight," Desjardins said. "That's how it works. It's very emotional. You get frustrated, a couple of times that's what happened, and we take advantage of that. It was huge for us."
The Sharks undoubtedly made a step in the right direction in game three. However, with a 3-1 series deficit a real possibility for San Jose headed back to Vancouver, every game is just as important as the one which preceded it.
Something that Sharks Captain Joe Thornton stressed following the game.
"Every game for us is game seven right now."

21 more periods like the first and second tonight.
That’s all it will take.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
Nemo was huge tonight
If not for giving up those last two on that major, he has to be a star.
After watching more of the replay of the hit, it looks more and more legal (still dumb in the context of a 3 goal lead though IMO) – hopefully Campbell agrees because that 4th Line looked pretty good out there with McGinn-Desjardins-Mayers instead of the traditional combos we’ve seen before.

San Diego
is large enough to have an NHL team. Not the Sharks, though. Maybe Phx should move there, have a larger market, and still keep their neighboring fans from AZ. There are a lot of hockey fans in the military, and there are a lot of military in San Diego.

If this was a possibility, SD would probably need a new arena
They wouldn’t play at Viejas (SDSU arena), and the San Diego Sports Arena – errrrrrrrrrr, Valley View Casino Center – is an old piece of junk. And traffic around that neighborhood is already horrendous as is, even without a professional sports team occupying that location.
True, any city would have to be prepared
to receive a team, and to keep a team. A market analysis would have to be done to see if a team could be supported by the people.
In San Diego, maybe build an arena just to the North of SD, on the outskirts where there is a large business district, should they ever want a team.

For reference
41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.
NHL.com
It seems to me that the McGinn hit was clearly a boarding penalty, regardless of whether he made principle contact to with the shoulder (which, to me, it looked like he did). I don’t know how to assess whether or not Rome could have avoided placing himself in a dangerous position.
He was coasting. he didn’t leave his feet. The point of impact was shoulder to shoulder. Should have been 2 minutes at most.

I don’t think it warranted it a major, but I think the ref had to make that call.

(“that call” being a minor boarding penalty)
by Bearodactyls on May 21, 2011 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I hate to see this judged so strictly in this manner. The hit was hard, shoulder to shoulder. McGinn is not a dirty player, just a hard hitter. With such latitude for the referee interpretation, this game is becoming one where u can only ride a player who is near the boards, not check the player. I guess that is all right if that is where they want to go, but it is not the game I have known for all my hockey life of 40 years
I don't like to place blame on the injured player
But if you look at the replay, Rome turned at the last possible second, as a way of cushioning the blow of the hit, and that little spin on his part is the reason he ended up going face-first into the glass.
I know it’s easy to say from the comfort of my couch that he shouldn’t have done that, but the referees have to pay more attention to what’s happening, to the entirety of the play, instead of just basing the penalty on the result.

Wrong!
That was not boarding. That was not a penalty. Shoulder-to-shoulder. One ref was 10 ft from that play and didn’t call a penalty. The guy 50 ft away penalized the injury. Horse#)%U$OU%#@. That kept Vancouver in the game, that spineless call.
CLEAN HIT, without a doubt, but since McGinn is a 4th liner, expect the league wheel of discipline to make something up.
Not clean. Correct call. Move on.
Shoulder to head contact.

It was not initial point of contact
and head was not targeted
by mikericcinotme on May 21, 2011 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions
"targeted?"
Does not matter what his targeting system was aiming for. McGinn skates across ice and hits Rome at 90 degree angle. He may have aimed for Rome’s shoulder but the fact that it was the back side of the shoulder does make a difference. The back calls it because he saw the whole play while the front ref’s job is to watch the puck area.
The refs have been all over the board this series. But this time it was the right call. McGinn made a stupid hit.
You guys still played better and won. Bitching about that call after winning is useless.
Bieksa reminds me of Han Solo, except without the charm...or the Wookie at his side, unless you count Alberts.

I disagree dismisive Nucks fan.
Just watched it in slow-mo many times and I can see where you’re coming from. However, the head snaps back to make contact with Ginner’s shoulder, not the other way around. If you hit a player hard in the shoulder, and he hasn’t set himself for the hit, his head is going to go all over the place. The next angle shown on VS shows the direction of impact better, with Ginner driving straight through the shoulder, the head whipping back and then forward again into the boards.
That was hard to watch multiple times, and I hope that Rome is OK. He was definitely out before he hit the ice.
It’s not as cut an dry as I thought it was watching it live, but I stand by my original assessment of 2 (as a pure reaction by the on-ice officials to the blood/hard to watch nature of the hit) or nothing.
Read above...
if McGinn was coming was skating from behind and caught Rome and hit him I would agree with you. Clean hit. But it is the distance he traveled to make that hit and the angle of the hit which cost him. The blood from Rome’s head hitting the glass cost McGinn the game.
Bieksa reminds me of Han Solo, except without the charm...or the Wookie at his side, unless you count Alberts.
Oh hey, that's the screencap I took. I also took this one from a second before that one:

Notice how McGinn is IN FRONT OF Rome. Kind of hard to target a guy who is behind you. How do I know McGinn is in front? His right skate is obscured by white sock, which would have to be Rome’s. Notice how Rome’s numbers are both visible, as well.
Did Rome’s head get hit? Absolutely. Was that contact the principle point of contact? Seems unlikely if Rome’s skates are behind McGinn’s before contact is made, unless Rome lowered his head into the shoulder, which I doubt.

And refs shouldn’t be calling penalties to injuries but to the legality of plays. Head contact where the head is not the principle point of contact is not illegal in hockey.
Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!
And as the guy on NHL Network said
When you’re in the pros you gotta be aware of where you are. Rome should have been aware that someone was gonna hit him, but realized too late, and turned to the boards.
That guy said the board and the stanchion probably did more damage than the hit, and I can kinda believe it.
Randy Hahn - "The Man With The Big Butt - Patrick Marleau - we like him and we cannot lie..."
Even Marty Turco thought McGinn/Sharks were jobbed on that call
And there is no love lost between him and the Sharks, so that says volumes.
I initially thought it was the right call too, but after seeing the replay myself and those screenshots, I’m leaning more now that it was a legal hit. Nevertheless, I still think McGinn was dumb* for making that hit based on the context of the game and the reffing – it’s a comfortable 3 goal lead with about 10 minutes to go and the refs were calling everything – that type of hit wasn’t necessary. He should have never given the refs the opportunity to blow the whistle. In full speed, that does look like a penalty.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t make contact, but he probably should have let up more.

And to me it looked as if McGinn’s numbers were hitting Rome’s shoulder. McGinn came in and turned his hips to allow his backside absorb the impact.
Hard hockey play, too fast for the human eye to see what actually happened except for the end results. Vignault would have exploded on the bench if there was no call. 2 min. for boarding should have been the right call.

Yup
You see hits like that all the time, except the player taking the hit can usually handle it. Rome was at fault for not turning to the side to make it shoulder on shoulder. If Rome had not fallen to the ground, no penalty would have been called. Soon, players are just going to embellish and make sure they slam their helmets into the boards hard whenever they get hit. Fuck you NHL

That's what I'm saying
You’re digging for the puck along the boards, you don’t even look over your shoulder to see if somebody is coming? And because he never looks behind him, it’s illegal to hit him? So then we are supposed to let him just clear the puck, and then maybe hit him later at a time more preferable to him? Or maybe just never hit him ever.
free mcginn
bet he doesnt get a game off. but if he does I would trade erhoff and rome out for the series for the loss of mcginn for a game any day or night. on that note any early word on how long either player might be out?
Actually, he may... (Rule 23.3):
Rule 23.3 “In Playoffs any player who incurs a total of two game misconduct … shall be suspended automatically for the next Playoff game of his team.”
As he had a call just like this against him in the LA series, there is a very real possibility that he may have the day off Sunday.

Revolving Penalty Box, eh?
I, too, was concerned about the PP vs 5 on 5 scoring, but the way I look at it, with 10 minor penalties against Vancouver, that’s 20 minutes on the man advantage, an entire period… Not that I’m complaining, far from it, just pointing out that they didn’t have a lot of 5 on 5 time, and when you’re already up 3-0, I think it’s less about trying to score even-strengthed and more about making smart hockey plays. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that I don’t care how the goals were scored. Take advantage of the opportunities given. They don’t come along all that often.

When I saw the McGinn I said "Booyah!!! GREAT HIT!!!"
“Oh shit, he crumpled to the ice, that’s going to be a penalty” It’s really sad that they feel they need to make a call everytime someone goes down now a days.
Also, McGinn needs to play more. I’m hoping he takes out two more Canucks next game.

If that is two suspensions in the playoffs (I think it is…), the NHL rulebook is pretty clear that he gets a one game additional suspension. Rule 23.3

So bizarre
If he had two charging majors he’d receive an automatic suspension (Rule 23.3 – “General category”)
If he had two boarding majors he’d receive an automatic suspension (Rule 23.5 – “Stick infractions, Boarding, or Checking from Behind”)
But because he has one of each, there is no automatic suspension.
Apparently the hockey gods want him to keep playing. TMac should listen.

Great team win tonight..
I thought they were much, much better at taking away the open slot area when Vancouver was on their power plays. Also, I thought the 4th line played great. Even though McGinn took the 5 minute major (not the right call in my opinion), they did a great job of being physical and had great energy when they were on the ice. Even drew a few penalties and had a great scoring chance.

The team and franchise has been sold on teal for 20 years. I’ve never lived in the Bay Area, so I don’t know if that’s been different there, but every hat, jersey, t-shirt, jacket, etc. that I’ve bought since starting to follow the team in 1992 has been either teal, white or black as a primary color, and I imagine that’s the same for most people. When everyone nationwide seemed to jump on having teal jerseys in the mid-late 90’s, at least I could point out that the Sharks started that stupid trend. Hell, if I show up at a game in a $130 jersey, I’m sure as hell not going to be thrilled about wearing an $4 orange T-shirt over it because “it looks better on TV.”

WELL DONE MCGINN!
I’ve been hard on you all season and you finally gave the energy the Sharks were desperately looking for. You did what I was hoping for; more pressure and hard forechecking on Error and and other Canucks D. That hit on Rome was a boarding hit, but did not warrant a ejection. Had Rome gotten up, it would have been 2 minutes. McGinn’s play may have changed the tide for the series by knocking out 2 defenseman. If we can get a repeat performance from the 4th line, things will start looking good. Well done!
BTW did anyone see Henrik Sedin tell Thornton he was sorry for something???

if Heatley ever became a 50+ goal scorer again during his time in SJ, would it throw off the team’s chemistry/balance, or is there enough room for him to grow like that?

Should we be worried about the 3rd period?
I don’t think so. Frankly, after that first goal the Sharks game back storming, drew 2 penalties, and scored.
The PK needs to be a bit better at the end there, but those 2 goals were a result of a 5 minute major that few seem to agree about.
Over on Nucks Misconduct, someone said that he was surprised that the Sharks were emotionally intense for just 15 minutes and then the Nucks were the better team. Also, there was something said about the Sharks not being able to hold leads.
I disagree on both points. The Sharks killed off a long streak of 5-on-3 play for the Nucks. As for the lead holding, that was a little worrisome, but I blame it on that 5 minute major. If it’s a normal penalty, they may still have scored, but I wouldn’t have been surprised to see the Sharks get a 5th one after that.
Moreover, the Nucks lucked out on 2 of their goals with deflections off of Sharks D-men. Somehow, Niemi was close to saving all 3 of the goals though.. impressive.

Yeah, Sharks dominated for pretty much 40-50 minutes.
I read that and thought “what game were you watching?”. I think they are just a bit cocky over there. They should not let the score fool them, it was not close at all. Which is why I wasn’t to worried when they cut the deficit to one.
Let them think what they want, no matter what Vancouver does, if we bring this effort the rest of the series, it will be ours.

I can’t stand the guy- that was a very dangerous slash at the end of the game. I wish more of the media would have called it for what it was- a cheap and dirty play. Vigneault and his whining is ridiculous as well. I don’t have a strong opinion about the Kings (their players are not very likeable, but whatever), and Detroit I have a ton of respect for. The guys on Detroit battled tough, respectable and played the right way. No diving, no whining, no cheap shots. Vancouver is the complete opposite- they’ll run their mouths, won’t back it up, take cheap shots and their coach complains like no other. Pretty much the opposite of what we saw from the Red Wings organization, their players and Babcock. Damn! I said I wasn’t going to talk about it, but you got me!

Is on nhl network right now!
Yeah I might switch over to that, ’cuz the TB-Boston game is NOT going the way I wanted it to

Why? You want bolts in the finals?
I’d much rather take on Boston…
Drew: 'Oh no.. That is certainly the meaty part alright, but it's not the thigh..."
Randy: "No... that bone is NOT connected to the thigh bone..."

I’m more worried about Boston, to be honest, plus I kinda’ like TB

TB and the Sharks in the SCF
would really shake things up with the NHL and TV. But it would also be great for growing the hockey fanbase, at least in the USA.

This jem comes from the Prohockeytalk comment section.
“Whatever you may think about the hit on Aaron Rome, it really looks like the Sharks are deliberately going out and trying to injure the opposition’s players. Considering coach McLelland’s comments re: Ben Eager after game 2 shouldn’t the league be looking at SERIOUS sanctions against McLelland? Eager looked like he was trying to take Daniel Sedin out of the playoffs, and could have ended his career.
This isn’t just against the NHL’s stated policy of trying to protect players, it is criminal assault. At the very least McLelland should face a fine equal or greater than a year’s salary and be barred from the league for life. For that matter the Vancouver Crown Counsel and the San Jose DA should be involved. This isn’t hockey, it’s organized crime."

Whoever he is he must have done something pretty heinous if the minimum punishment is expulsion from the league.

So how do they stop the 3rd period hemorrhaging ?
That is quickly becoming (yet again) the period The Sharks good work gets blown away. How does the coach bandage this up? He himself said it has nothing to do with conditioning and I realize you have to expect so sort of push by a team as good as the canucks, but the goals against is getting out of hand. It worries me but the coach is on it im sure and TMAC can figure it out. GO SHARKS!!!

Stop giving the canucks 10 minutes on the power play in the 3rd? That’s really what’s been doing us in.

So what happens when...
… if Sharks and the Bolts get to the SC final… then I am guessing its going to be constantly depressed commentating? haha
Nah,
I think they’d be getting excited for TB, due to the Stamkos hype. Sort of like the Kane hype last year. Besides, TB is closer to the East Coast than San Jose.
