Sharks fail to convert on their opportunities in 4-2 loss to the Canucks

Photo

Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan loves to talk about opportunity.

Whether it be a shift to start a period, the rush of adrenaline leading up to a tilt, or a specific moment in a game where one play can swing the momentum in a positive direction, opportunity is all around us. Both in life as well as this great sport we love.

Opportunity didn't evade San Jose today. San Jose evaded opportunity.

"When you look at our execution, our passing, our face-offs, opportunities to win pucks, you start breaking out all the time," McLellan said. "And when you're against the number one penalty kill in the League, you have to be sharp. And we weren't. It was as simple as that."

San Jose's power play, which came into today's game functioning at an unworldly 46% rate, had numerous opportunities to bury the Canucks early-- Vancouver was dinged for five penalties in the first twenty four minutes of the game. In other words, San Jose played nearly half of the first period and beginning of the second with the man advantage. But San Jose couldn't convert-- entries into the zone were a sloppy affair as the Sharks drove middle and couldn't complete the kick out to the half wall, passing after gaining the zone was tentative and in small spaces, traffic in front of Roberto Luongo was lighter than an apple walnut salad, and a tenaciousness that will define a team's ability to go for the jugular was nonexistent.

The Sharks had the Canucks on the ropes, the crowd roaring as the finishing moves were promised but never applied. The three count that could have been.

"We just didn't execute. I think it was us. They had a strong stance at the blueline, they had four accross," Logan Couture said between gritted teeth. "We tried different things, we tried to force pucks. We just didn't execute."

Although the lack of conversion is likely to be laid at the feet of San Jose, credit Vancouver's penalty kill for regaining the swagger that made them the best shorthanded unit in the League during the regular season. Roberto Luongo was a big part of the Canucks win tonight, shutting the door on the chances San Jose had while giving up a very limited amount of rebounds throughout the tilt. When he did kick out a rebound Vancouver's strong defensive unit was up to the task, clearing pucks from the dangerous areas of the ice.

"I think we just did our job. It's what the PK has to do, we have to outwork the power play. I think from the first period in game three on we did what we wanted to do and continued it," Canucks center Ryan Kesler said. "It's tough [to start off the game with 5 penalties] but we have to do it."

Star-divide

Following San Jose's missed opportunities in the first half of the tilt, Vancouver was blessed with three opportunities of their own. In a span of two minutes and forty six seconds the Sharks paraded to the box with reckless abandon, much like the parade that permeated throughout the second period of game three. With Dany Heatley, Torrey Mitchell, Kyle Wellwood, and Douglas Murray in the box for high sticking, hooking, too many men, and delay of game infractions respectively, the Canucks got to work with three 5 on 3 advantages.

The Sharks dodged a bullet on the 5v3 in game three. Tonight, they took three of them right in the chest.

"We got away with it last time. We blocked shots, we didn't block them tonight," Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle said. "I'm not going to blame the three guys that were out there, they did what they could. It's bound to go in 5 on 3 when you give up that many opportunities."

Vancouver went on to score three times in a span of 1:55, with all three of those second period goals coming at 5 on 3. Ryan Kesler opened the scoring with a laser of a one-timer that was set up by Henrik Sedin and Sami Salo. Salo and Sedin would go on to contribute on the next two as well, with Henrik finding Salo two more times on the same set play high in the zone. A pair of point shots from the 36 year old Finn gave the Canucks a 3-0 lead, with his final shot proving to be the game winner.

"I didn't like the penalties that originated the five on threes. Heater's penalty, a turnover at the line and then the hook. Then Mitchell's penalty was one where he reached in. And then it snowballs from there," Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan said. "It's hard to argue too many men on the ice and it's certainly hard to argue the puck out of play."

"I can't sit here and whine and bitch about the officiating. Because it had absolutely nothing to do with it."

It took Vancouver a mere two minutes to turn the tides of a game that San Jose had dominated up to that point, two minutes that San Jose had been blessed with five times before. In a game of opportunity, those tides can sink the stoutest of vessels, submerge even the strongest of ships. And although the Sharks would go on to make things interesting in the final frame, getting a pair of goals from Andrew Desjardins and Ryane Clowe to cut the deficit to two at the 7:02 and 15:55 mark respectively, it was not enough.

Opportunity is a fickle sword, one whose blade can cut both ways throughout the course of a game and series. With San Jose's back pressed against the wall, and the prospect of a second straight Western Conference Finals loss staring them dead in the face, the Sharks must now win three in a row including two in the less than hospitable Rogers Arena.

It's not the most appealing of situations. But the locker room, like they have shown all throughout this season, still remains confident in their ability to persevere.

"We played with our back against the wall last game, we played well. If we can play desperate hockey, you know we've got everything to lose here," Ryane Clowe said. "We haven't won yet in Vancouver, we haven't even played good hockey. We've been good on the road [this year]. Their only hope is to close it out there, they don't want to come back to San Jose."

"Sometimes if you can make them play an extra game back in here, you get your momentum back."

Hey Sharks, on Tuesday all you need to do...

‎"From this day forward, play like you give a damn. Play like you want it more. Play like it’s your last game. Leave nothing in the tank, then come back and do it again. Do it to silence your critics. Do it for your loyal fans. But, most of all, do it for yourselves. Being this close to a championship may never come again. Do it now." -Vegas Shark 4/4/2010

Gonna have to be in seven now.

Three in a row isn’t easy, but this time of year what is… I still feel like Detroit is a better team than Vancouver (all things considered) so if the Sharks can win that, then they can win this.

Now all that said, I’ve got to come out and admit that I’ve been a Vancouver fan this year. Sharks first and foremost and forever, but when they weren’t playing or when Yahoo showed a Vancouver game, I was watching. (It helped that I had Luongo in 3 Fantasy leagues—and not coincidentally finished in the top 4 in three leagues as well—so I had a bit of a vested interest) So if the Canucks win, I won’t be devastated. That and their fans have been pretty cool, unlike the Detroit and Chicago folks… Especially the ones who are STILL trolling even after their seasons are over… So if it can’t be the Sharks, then I’m okay with it being the Canucks.

But, dammit, if it’s got to be the Canucks then let it be in 7! And overtime at that! Go down swinging, and take the next two!

According to Sharkspage, that's a number coming from the Vancouver media.

I was at the game, and it didn’t seem like 1/4 of the place was Canucks fans.

It was pretty close to.

Even 2000 is too much, considering the Sharks have a season ticket base of over 95% Sharks fans have sold out on their team.

I agree.

It was way too many Canucks fans for sure, but I think 4,000 is a little high of an estimation.

That number is total BS. They filled the END of the lower section of the bowl about half way during warmups.

1500-2000 is more like it.

The SAD part is that our fans were so quiet, you’d have thought this was South Vancouver. None of the energy from G7 last week.

It just feels like the Tank let them down.

I think the 12 O'clock start had a little to do with that.

Unlike Game 2 against Detroit which was also played at noon, the Sharks weren’t able to score early and the fans never really got into it.

Well if the Sharks scored on one of their gazillion power plays in the first, the crowd would’ve been a whole lot louder. The 5 on 3s kinda sucked all the energy out of the arena

Sometimes the players need to hear us when they are down. We dropped them on the floor.

The worst part? I had breakfast at San Pedro square. It was all blue and green. I’m not saying no San Jose fans showed up, but they were WAY outnimbered by the bus-ins.

So now I know what it feels like to have a team break into your house, eat your food, rape your dog, and steal your wife.

Why would we have to have such an early game when both teams are in the West. What Vs has to make time for Cycling comon. Stupid stuff.. I was at the tank on Firday and lost my voice screaming for the Sharks…so I would expect that the same happend on Sat. Shark fans can only control so much but if there is a game six which I think this is going to seven with a Shark win. Fans better loose their voice in game 6 rooting for their Shark team. Season ticket holder here

I was at the game today and it def wasn’t close to 4000.

Also, when a season ticket holder sells their tickets, they can’t tell what fan they are selling to. When I have sold them in the past to strangers, all i know is their name; not who they root for. if more Canuck fans are buying tickets it is more of a statement about sharks fans than sharks season ticket holders. I doubt season ticket holders are only willing to sell to Canuck fans. If Canuck fans are willing to spend more on tickets than we are then those fans are MORE COMMITTED. The tickets are, after all, the same price for them as they are for us.

So while I agree that tickets are priced ridiculously high, I would not blame the season tickets holders for the high attendance of canuck fans and as a season ticket holder I do not appreciate being called a “fuck”

A weird game and a tough one to lose.

Nemo’s undoubtedly going to get a lot of flak for his less than stellar statistics from not only today but the series as a whole, but I think he can really only be blamed for the fourth goal and maybe Salo’s first. The loss today was on the guys in front of him for failing to execute on any of 5 PP opportunities and for taking stupid, undisciplined penalties. Despite this, the 4th line played very well and I thought the Sharks as a whole played pretty well at even strength.

No Joe Thornton?

Didnt return for the remaining 10 minutes of the game. I would like to say it was precautionary cause the game was out of reach. Where the hell has Pavelski been? Maybe this forces him to step up and show why he could have been captain.

In Short

1st Period: Sharks had 5 powerplays, did not show any work ethic and failed on all of them.

2nd Period: Sharks began period with a PP and still no work ethic. Then Heatley, Mitchell, Couture, and Murray take dumb penalties giving the Canucks 3 consecutive 5 on 3s. Sharks break down mentally.

3rd Period: Canucks sit back and contain the lead. Raffi Torres runs Thornton and injures him and doesnt return. Sharks get two meaningless goals.

by OrangeJulius on May 22, 2011 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sorry if this is too simple.

1st Period: Sharks go one and done on multiple power plays. Canucks 0. Sharks 0.

2nd Period: 5 on 3 power plays kill Sharks. Canucks 3, Sharks 0.

3rd Period: Sharks look just like the First Period Sharks. Canucks 4. Sharks 2.

McLellan was going with this at the end of the game tonight:

Marleau-Thornton-Couture
Clowe-Pavelski-Setoguchi
Wellwood-Mitchell-Heatley
Mayers-Desjardins-McGinn

Pavelski actually looked dangerous out there with them, easily his best period this series. Only thing I don’t like about it is the fact that the third line is really exposed in their own end (and SJS is on the road for game five), but frankly, Heatley needs to be demoted to switch up the vibe. Just get this feeling he’s been dragging down that second line this series, because outside of Couture, that entire line has been clown shoes. Middle six forwards have really struggled for San Jose.

Great point, Soloact. Coaches have to bring it too.

On Vancouver, I’d personally like Ballard to play more for the Canucks. Likely becuz I like what I see him do.

Yet he sits a lot, cuz Coach AV doesn’t like what he doesn’t see Ballard do way too much. So he’s often a $4.2 million / year scratch. Balls > words.

He might be playing injured

So I wouldn’t throw him under the bus just yet. Plus, he’s coming off of a pretty poor season as far as statistics go. I honestly feel like he’s a good player, but he needs someone to set him up to shoot (Couture and Pavelski are great centers, but they’re scorers, not exactly playmakers like Thorton was on HTML). If the Sharks can get another setup center to pair him with, I think his numbers will do better.

But I digress, let’s focus on this season, because it ain’t over.

Desperate Hockey By This Team? No Physicality In Game Four

It was obvious who wanted game four more. Can they all of a sudden turn it on again? Its amazing to me that a team as talented as the Sharks just doesn’t show up for some of their most important games. The spark just wasn’t there at all yesterday. Vancouver came out to get us back for knocking two of their defensemen out, took some stupid penalties, we had them right where we wanted them and then didn’t show up on the power play.

Vancouver was much more physical, much more hyped up for the game, and just took it too us. They seem to want it more than the Sharks do.

I hope that I am wrong, but yesterday was an embarrassment.

I watched The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard.

Surprisingly, the Sharks were name-checked in it. Specifically they try to get a replacement for their stunt and say they can get “The mascot for the San Jose Sharks hockey team. He can’t wear the shark suit, but he’ll show.”

…It’s set in Temecula… So maybe someone wasn’t doing their joggerfie. Or they just didn’t care because it made for a better punchline.

In college we’d point at each goalie with alternating “Goalie! Sieve! Goalie! Sieve!” but that’s probably something that needs practicing when not being done by 1,000 (mostly) drunk college students.

At RPI games...

Everyone counts off the goals after their scored, chants sieve… then loudly berrate the opposing goaltender saying “it’s all your fault!” several times. Might work better if you just do the “it’s all your fault” part at Luongo.

I felt the same way.

It boggles my mind to no end not only that they do it, but how they do it.

My wife and I had the good fortune of bumping into Brodie Brazil at Peggie Sue’s before the game. On top of being a top shelf guy for talking to us for more time than most guys in his business would, we chatted a bit about what Team Teal’s biggest issues were, and hoping that we would see them vanish today, namely:

  1. Containing Vanc’s Speed
  2. Limiting the Penalties
  3. For the love of God covering the weak side of play in our zone (specifically, the net).

Unfortunately, they did not go away.

And I have a feeling both of us were thinking about that conversationwe had prior to the game at Peggie Sue’s Barat the moment the final buzzer rang.

I love these Sharks to death…I’ve NEVER regretted becoming a fan of the Sharks after moving here from Boston. We all know that they have true grit when it counts, but I just can’t understand how they’ve allowed the same elements of play to bite them in the a-double-dollar-signs for 4 games now.

I truly hope that they find a way to keep it alive, but I know it will be no easy battle.

But, come hell, high water, or rapture…#IBelieveInTeamTeal

Agreed

How they lost hurt a lot more than the fact that they lost (if that makes sense..). So many freakin opportunities and they couldn’t put it away. Vancouver’s penalty kill was good but after, I don’t know, the 3rd one, don’t you try and use an alternative method of getting in the zone and sustaining pressure. I don’t even feel like they played that badly outside of the 2 minutes in the 2nd period. I think our collective fan base is just at a loss for words and reasons as to why they can’t fix their mistakes.

Oh man, Plank. I always count on your eloquent writing and analysis to help me figure out how i should feel after a loss. Its strangely cathartic in a way, as you know how to look at things with a good and open perspective, pointing out the positives we can take away from it and what-not. I was hoping you’d be able to point out the beacon of hope here, but the fact that you feel this way, and rightfully so, well, it just makes me sad :( It’s not your fault of course, it just sucks.

I’ve been trying my darndest to be optimistic, and I know these Sharks have shown me so much this year that gives me just enough faith to continue to believe.

The Sharks sure know how to put us fans through complete hell. We may be one big group of masochists, but despite the torture and disappointment, I know I will never give up on these team. Never.

But I believe this is the group that can overcome it. They’ve faced so much diversity and bounced back very well after tough losses at various points in the season.

We believe this year is different … like last year, the year b4 it, etc. Such is being a fan.

Yet is could happen. The talent is there. The will is there. The fan base is there. Same as for the Sharks.

It’s why we each believe. Just like you folks do. Lose the 3 games do or die mindset. One game at a time. One shift at a time.

Interesting point

It would be interesting to study from year to year. I mean, I think in a lot of ways you could say that the second round sometimes is the best playoff hockey. Teams have hit their playoff stride, but they’re also generally not totally worn down yet by the long grind.

Boston and Tampa Bay got to the ECF in good shape based on quick 2nd round series, but I think your points about the WCF is quite valid.

Go and win Game 5 in Rogers Arena, then the pressure would be on the Canucks to not lose Game 6 at the Tank and be forced into a free-for-all Game 7 back in Vancouver.

They better be smelling blood when they hit the ice in Rogers.

Even if the Sharks don't lose, the offseason is depressing by nature.

I’m hoping the Sharks treat the offseason like a school project: put it off as long as possible.

No hockey sucks...

but off season gives me time to get outside, mainly to Work on and play with my vehicles. Some friends and I who always get hockey-hungry about mid July are starting a street hockey team this year… stick, gloves, and skates required. You guys should do the same. It really helps to knock down the emptiness in the 4 months of “No-Hockey Season” as my g/f calls it.

I actually think this loss was not Niemi's fault at all

Come on…3 5 on 3 goals….and all those penalties they took…I think it was more of sloppy play. THREE 5 on 3 goals. Just…horrible. No PPG in 10 minutes. Yeah Vancouver’s got a great PK but still, you have to convert in this situation. Very sloppy play tonight by the Sharks. Need to step it up if they want to win this series.
That said, this team isgood. They can win. Believe

It wasn't his fault at all

however, I don’t think he did a sufficient job of keeping us in the game (granted, we should have put the game away when we had 5 straight PPs). Nemo was pretty weak high blocker side (yes, I know thats not his forte, but still) on two of the 5v3 goals, and he was completely embarrassed by Sedin on the 4th. If he only allows vancouver to burry two on the 5v3 and doesnt tempt henrik with the 5 hole pass, this could have been a much different game.

with that siad, there are many “coulda shoulda wouldas” and “if onlys” from this game. I definitely agree that this was a team loss and I expect much more from everyone, including niemi.

Yeah I have been really impressed with the parts of Heatley’s game that he has improved. I think his work ethic this year is much improved from the year before and has upped the physical part of his game a lot. I would just like to see him pull the trigger more than he has, a shot like that doesn’t just disappear.

Even still, I wouldnt THAT be surprised to be shipped out this post season. DW definitely doesn’t want to be paying $7million for a 2nd liner and with guys like seto and couture maturing and becoming what they are, Heater might be the odd man out given his price tag and what we could get in exchange.

Think of it this way

You’ve got a proven 50 goal scorer who’s scored 50 goals twice
He’s had a 100 point season before.
He’s got a proven track record and 64 points being considered a down year? I say that’s pretty darn good.
Guys like Seto may regress or progress. I really don’t know. Remember his 31 goal season and then the one after that…?
You can’t ship out Heatley after a mediocre season just like that. He deserves a chance. And that’s really not going to help attract players to SJ. I hope Heatley can return to his point per game form. And keep in mind this year wasnt all that bad for him. Yeah, his point total regressed but it’s one bad year. That’s it. And he’s made good improvements on D too. Much better than last year on D I say. And his offense: he just had a down year. stated for the 100000000th time. But I can’t stress enough that you can’t let go of a premier player in the league just like that.

This isn’t the time to get into this, but I disagree that the Sharks got Heater for almost nothing. Not that it was a bad trade, but to me the big loss was Ehrhoff. I don’t know. I know how lots of fans here look at Ehrhoff, but he’s really blossomed since going to Vancouver and I think—if he could have done that with the Sharks—he would have really fit in well. I mean, just what the Sharks need in terms of having a good puck-moving offensive-minded defenseman on the left side.

And there’s also the idea of how we could use that $7 million each years instead of on Heatley, but I digress.

Bleacher Report .com just ran an article on upcoming free agents...

They made one reccomendation for each of the 30 teams and provided what each one would bring to the squad. Erhoff was one they suggested the Sharks pick up if VAN doesn’t renew.

Different sport all together, But in baseball, i’ve seen the Yankees do this numerous times. Players get traded away (no cap in MLB) to other teams, then later the Yanks pick them back up again. And the second time around, they usually stay on the Roster for a while. I won’t rosterbate any further, but It would be great to see D pairings of Boyle/Murray, Vlasic/Erhoff, and White/Demers. Solid D.

I hear what you're saying

And you make some good points. But the hard reality of it is that too much Cap $$$ is tied up with Boyle, Thornton, Marleau, and Heatley. Especially when you consider how much we need to improve our Defense (shot from the point on the PP) and how we may need to match an offer sheet to Seto (not sure I’d do that).

For the Sharks to become a Stanley Cup Champoin they will need to improve their Defense (both in terms of depth and speed and shot making). That cannot happen if you have close to 1/2 of your entire salary tied up in your 4 star players. And with the emergence of Couture, I would argue that Heatley and his $8 million dollar salary are expendable. I don’t think he fits in on this team unless he plays with Thornton.

I believe that $8 million or $7 million as you indicated, could be better spend on a top notch D-man with a booming shot on the PP and another Ian White type of role player. If you advocate keeping Heatley you severly hamper you ability to gain depth on the blue line and as we’ve seen this playoff series, reduce your chances to win the Conf. Finals. Heatley hasn’t contributed nearly enough to get us over in this series. In 5 PP opportunities last game we couldn’t score and he must take some, if not most of that blame being the highest paid player on this team. The Sedin’s make $6 million each and Kessler makes $5. I think they’re all better than Heatley at this stage of his career. So I say trade him now (if he agrees) while he still has trade value left. If not, then I guess we role the dice for 3 more years (his salary does decrease) and we’ll see if he can deliver while Thornton and Patty are still here?

by douchebags on May 23, 2011 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Its not the 64 points for $7M

That bothers me. And yes we did give up a lot to get him; team speed (Michalek and Ehrhoff), and cap space $7M for another 3 years. The team speed has been a huge factor in the last two playoff seasons, the Sharks forwards can not keep up with the quick defense that Vancouver and Chicago had. Do you think Michalek would be a little more effective in forechecking the defense? No doubt. Its very painful to watch Heatley to skate and he will never dominate a game like Kovalchuk or Iginla, so please never mention any of those names when comparing Heatley.

Late night insomnia post..

..I was thinking about this series and how the Sedin’s have really come to life against the Sharks. So, I looked up the Sedins’ stats and how their play (going only by goals they have been a part of, one or both of them) has influenced Vancouver’s wins and loses in this postseason. And it seems, for the most part, as the Sedin’s go so does Vancouver during these playoffs.

In games in which they’ve been a part of 1 or no goals Vancouver’s record is 5-6. One of those loses? Yep, the Sharks only win so far in this series. In games in which they’ve been a part of 2 or more goals their record is a perfect 6-0. They have been a part of 2 or more goals in this series 3 times.

Against the Sharks they have contributed to 10 of the 17 goals that Vancouver has scored thus far in 4 games. During the Chicago series they were a part of 8 of 16, and during the Nashville series they part of 4 of 14. Added up it’s 12 of 30 goals they were a part of, in some way, in those 2 series. So in 4 games vs. the Sharks they have almost equaled what they did in 13 games vs. Chicago and Nashville.

I know the Sharks don’t have a shutdown D pairing like Keith-Seabrook and Suter-Weber, but they did contain them in game 3. If they can contain the Sedin’s the chances of winning are a lot better than if they don’t, as the stats above show.

Take it for what it’s worth. I just thought it was something interesting. Go Sharks!

It could have hurt

but even I expected him to get up off the ice sooner than that. (canucks fan) Was it a cheap shot? Ya, probably. A gloved punch to the face after the game is over would be considered such. But considering that hits from behind aren’t suspendible apparently, hits from the front and slashes aren’t either. I’m honestly confused by what a penalty/suspendible offense is in the NHL playoffs, and I’ve watched and played hockey my whole life. Here’s to hoping that part of the game gets better.

by Josh Dykstra on May 24, 2011 3:11 AM PDT up reply actions

It aint over til it's over

I think what pissed me off more than anything was being at the tank and seeing so many Canucks fans. On the radio they said there were about 4000 people. What a crock of garbage. How the hell are they getting tickets? Also, they were 10 times louder during the Canadian anthem than us Americans were during our anthem. Sad times at HP.

I can’t bitch about officiating because I think overall, it evened out. We were given PLENTY of opportunities to strike early and often in the 1st period. The Sharks didn’t convert and therefore, that was the game. Sad to think if it weren’t for those 5 on 3’s, we would have won 2-1. But shoula, woula, coulda…

But away from that, I still have full confidence in this team. I have no doubts that we have what it takes to win game 5 and bring it back to SJ. I hate the idea of playing ANOTHER game 7 but that’s the cards that were dealt and so be it. We just need a solid and disciplined game. It's clear to me...

That this team is not good enough to go beyond the Conference Finals and beat an elite team like Vancouver this year or Chicago last year. There are some structural flaws on this team that Mr. Plank spoke about during the year. Namely the lack of consistent and strong defense. Boyle, Vlasic and Demers are all we have back there. Not nearly good enough to beat an elite and potent offense like the Canuck’s.

I’m also VERY concerned about our seemingly enemic offense. By that I mean guys like Heatley and Setoguchi are not playing near the level needed to make an impact. I’ll go so far as to say that Dany Heatley is an expensive luxury at $8 million per year. That money could be better spent on improving and upgrading our D. We have never been able to replace Rob Blake’s shot on the PP. That is priority #1. Get a big shot on the PP and upgrade the speed on Defense as well. Wallin, Huskins and Murray have to go, unless Murray is your 6th guy, but he cannot play major minutes or hang with the quickness of elite players in this league.

So not only would I do everything to move Dany Heatley this offseason, I’d also be reluctant to re-sign Seto or match an offer sheet on him. He is not worthy of a first round #8 pick in this league and may never be the impact guy in the playoffs we need.

On a more positive note, I love the core of this team: Niemi, Boyle, Thornton, and Marleau. Great veteran leadership. The complimentary players are very good too: Clowe, Pavelski and Couture. It’s time for this team to get younger, and faster. I love the kids like McGinn, Desjardans, Mashinter, and some of the guys in Worcester like Braun and Petrecki. It’s time for DW to re-tool this roster and add the key guys in places so that we can not only get to the Conf. Finals, but get past an elite team like Vancouver so that we win the Stanley Cup. That is what our fans deserve and what this classy organization is striving for. But I for one will no longer drink the Kool Aid and believe what they say. They’re going to have to show me from now on.

Mr. Plank, I look forward to reading your upcoming posts on potential free agent signings and what this team needs to do to get to the next level.

Thanks for a great year and best of luck to everyone, I’ve enjoyed reading all your posts and these fantastic articles. All the best!

Not trying to be negative

But we all know the % of coming back are slim to none. I said it was a great season and I believe the Sharks overachieved. But how can you say keeping Heatley @ $8 million dollars is a good use of cap space. Heatley doesn’t fit on this team and you already have Marleau and Couture. Use that money to improve the defense, otherwise we’ll be right back here next year wondering how we lost? Although good, this team is just not good enough. Sorry if I jumped the gun (perhaps bad form) but we will be having this conversation very soon.

I know you’re not trying to be negative DB… I usually really like your commentary on here. Just trying to get you a little more pumped for tomorrow. Maybe you’ll feel it tomorrow.

On Heatley- He had 39 goals last season… he was a point per game player on the dot. 82 points in 82 games. He had an off season this year for sure, don’t get me wrong. But I think other parts of his game have improved. He’s been used on the PK with Jumbo and he’s making those crisp passes to Cooch for goals. Think about Marleau in 2007-2008: 19 goals, 29 assists, 48 points in 78 points. Marleau is up and down as well and he’s still here and I think most of us still want him here (you included). That’s all I’m trying to say.

Dany Heatley

Is not a difference maker. He’s not worth $8 million per year when the Sedin twins get $6 and Kessler gets $5. And because of his huge salary, it limits our ability to go and get two really good defensemen to compliment Boyle and Vlassic.

I was in favor of the trade, as I thought it would get us over the hump, but it just hasn’t worked out. It’s not Heaters fault, he plays hard and does what he can (injuries and all). I’m just convinced that this team has too many other flaws and shouldn’t spend $8 of a salary cap on one guy, a guy who hasn’t delivered when we needed him most.

We can agree to disagree, but I hope DW feels as I do, otherwise I don’t see how we can get the talent we need to get to the top of the mountain in the next 3 years before our star players are gone. I’m not content with just getting to the Conf. Finals, I want to win them!

Take care, best of luck to you and the Sharks!

Yeah, you can try

Or you can keep what we have, reload from Worcester and see if that makes us any more able to compete with Vancouver. Heatley, and some other guys have not done nearly enough this series and that is partly why we’re down 3-1. The other reason (imo) is because our defense is slow and we lack a shot on the point. I’m not sure yet who is available via FA, but hopefully a better pool than last year?

Shea Weber

Is exactly the type of player we need. Not sure there are any out there. I do like the propect of watching Braun and Petrecki next year. I still Crankshaft, but he needs to play as a third pairing (just too slow) to keep up with the top line guys. I don’t want CE back, still not convinced he can hit the net?

UFA on D

So here’s the list of UFA’s for next year on D (only listing potential signings):
Thomas Kaberle (33) $4.25
Scott Hannan (32) $4.5
Eric Brewer (32) $4.25
Joni Pitkanen (27) $4.00
Kevin Bieksa (30) $3.75
James Wisniewski (27) $3.25
Christian Ehrhoff (29) $3.10
Ian White (27) $3.00
Jan Hejda (33) $2.00
Shane O’Brien (27) $1.60
Steve Montador (31) $1.55
Anton Babchuk (27) $1.40
Steve Eminger (27) $1.12
Andrew Alberts (30) $1.05
Randy Jones (29) $1.00
Marc-Andre Bergeron (30) $1.00
Jonathan Erickson (27) $.900
Paul Mara (31) $.750
Andy Greene (28) $.738
Adam Pardy (27) $.700
Jeff Woywitka (27) $.650

That’s about it. Kind of depressing.

God if we could somehow get Shea Weber or Drew Doughty or Luke Schenn; All RFA’s we’d be looking good! I can dream can’t I?

Perhaps an offer sheet is in the works this off season.

But in truth, I have more faith in the likes of Petrecki, Braun and… (Christ, I forget his name, that one other good D prospect we have) than an imported D man that may or may not wind up being another Bell or Guerin.

I say ditch the dead weight

Wallin and Huskins have got to go, and I doubt DW will be keeping them around. I’m a big fan of Ian White and I just think that he needs to be in the right pairing (Wallin is hurting that pairing’s effectiveness), so I’m all for keeping him.

Yeah, Shea Weber and Drew Doughty ain’t happening any time soon. Their respective teams have too much money freed up to offer them what they want. I agree it would be nice though.

Although Yandle is an RFA, is there some way we can get him? If we can’t, O’Brien might be a nice addition for a reasonable price. Bieksa hasn’t impressed me much command at least a 4 mil asking price, especially in the event that Van wins the SC. But I think the best move for us at this point is to keep White and bring up Braun and Petrecki and see what works.

by sharksfanwithajd on May 23, 2011 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm also on board with dumping Wallin and Huskins.

Huskins is rusty and injured, and never caps out very high.
Wallin has streaks of brilliance, but makes a ton of defensive mistakes on an off night.

Both have been liabilities, on the whole.

He’s restricted. And Nashville will not let their captain walk. Perhaps the Sharks could sign Keith Yandle to an offer sheet? $6 million per year might be too much for Phoenix to match.

Weber's contract will similar in dollars and term...

to the one’s signed by Luongo, Hossa, Keith, etc., the last couple of years.

Nashville will convince Weber to stay in Music City and try to win a cup there. In return, Weber will re-up for about 10 years (or so) with a cap hit of about $6 million/year, but a sliding salary scale.

by east_van_joe on May 23, 2011 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think Yandle can even get 6 mil in the FA market

Currently, I think he’s getting paid 1.25 mil. Even though Phoenix’s situation is somewhat stable for at least next year, he might be tempted to walk anyway to join a team with a more stable future. So, if he declines his contract with Phoenix and we’re able to offer say 2.5 to 2.75 mil, I think he’ll love to come to SJS. Just a thought.

Yandle to the Sharks??? Oh man, don’t get my hopes up, but that sounds fantastic!

by JQ24 on May 23, 2011 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions

He's going to get more than that?

He might be the best available D-man out there and led Phoenix is scoring and he’s only 24. If $6 is too much, he’ll surely get $4 per. But I won’t be surprised if he gets more.

by douchebags on May 23, 2011 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

If he gets over 4 mil

it’s probably going to be from a team like Minnesota, Edmonton, or Winnipeg i.e. non-SC contenders that are rebuilding their teams. And I do think Yandle will take a teams’ status of SC contender in consideration. I think that if we seriously consider giving him an offer, I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain team in red is our biggest competition of SC contenders in getting him.

If some other team wants to offer him 5 mil, then they can have at it. The most I can see us offering him is 3.5 mil. Hearing the news today that Rafalski is calling it quits plus the possibility of Lidstrom retiring, it wouldn’t surprise me if Yandle goes to Detroit getting 4-5 mil . Throwing in the possibility of them going after Bieksa, too? That team would be a beast on D and would be friggin’ nightmare for any team to face.

For what it's worth...

Heatley is being PAID $8m next year, but if I’m reading things right then he’s only going to count as $7.3m towards the cap. It’s hard to tell, exactly, because of bonuses and the possibility of injury, but Ottawa structured his contract as front-loaded shennanigan. The salary cap hit is constant over the duration of a contract, even if their pay fluctuates. On the negative side, this means when he’s paid $5m in 2013/14 he’s still going to count $7.whateverm against the cap.

by Nick! on May 23, 2011 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed!

Wallin is expensive compared to a few others, and he’s only mildly effective on D. It seems like Sharks D pairings have two components: one guy who does most of the dirty work (shut downs, hits, winning puck battles deep against the boards in our zone, etc), and the other that is a puck mover/transition guy who is speedier and drives to the net. Demers was that guy on our second line and with him out, it forces Vlasic to take up that roll, and he’s not nearly as quick as Demers. I think this kinda explains why Wallin/White have been so bad- they don’t have defined roles like the others. I think white is the better transition player from what I’ve seen, but he needs to be with a good shut down/ hitter, and follow Demers offseason work out plan to make him faster on the breakout.

Seto is great at being in front of the net at the right time to scoop up rebounds and sling them rapid fire at the net. Part of the reason he’s been largely absent in this series is i think Marleau and Thornton are not only taking more shots at the net themselves, but the Lines have been switching up more than past series, and they were Seto’s set up guys. There really are no better players on Team Teal than Marleau and Thornton for set ups.

off-season

now don’t get me wrong I still think the Sharks have a chance to come back, their play in the last 2 games has given me at least a glimmer of hope. But with that said I’m actually really looking forward to the off-season. I say that because I really feel like the Sharks will only get better and I really do mean that, if you look at capgeeks.com, you will see that most of our core players are returning. I’m just hoping management sees things the way I do and let guys like Wallin, Huskins, and White(played well imo but still not worth the price tag) walk and we make a play for a new D man via free agency. I think with Boyle, Murray, Vlasic, Demers, and a braun/Petrecki as the #6 + a top tier D man, that group will be more enough to compete with the best of them. I mean the way I see it huskins(1.7 mil), Wallin (2.5 mil) and White(3 mil) can be replaced by Demers and Braun with no real drop off cept they make will make about 2 million dollars combined. If we do however resign them we basically can’t make any plays via FA and then it would be a very depressing off-season lol.

Nope

The cap hit for a player is the averaged value of his contract over the life of the contract.

So for DH, http://www.capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=410 shows that he’s a 7.5 million dollar man for the life of the contract.

If you read above

I’ve made my points about this team on this post. You sound like your content to just let the chips fall where they may? I am not. This team is top heavy with overpaid, underproducing stars. $10 million in cap space won’t be enough to improve the team sufficiently to win the Cup. If however, they can add Heatley’s $7.5 million to that sum, then you have a large enough amount to re-sign Seto, sign a top notch PP D man and another Ian White type. You have enough to sign some veterans and a couple of your RFA’s. $10 million will be enough to land a top tier FA on defense, fill the other roster spots and keep Seto. I’m not content just making it to the Conf Finals, so I’m looking at what needs to happen for this team to get over the top.

I think Sharks main issue is with their coach.

TMAC seems completely clueless. The only change from game to game is replacing someone on the 4th line, who plays 3minutes a game..Yeah. That will change the whole game. It seems for bigger part of the game shares reserve to just shooting the puck in. Why can’t anyone try to skate the puck in for a change?

Here is what I think needs to be done:

1. Heater needs to be dropped to line 4 or moved to the top line to play with Thorton. Currently, he drags line 2 to the ground.

2. Bring Eager and Ferriero back. Sit Wellwood.

3. Replace either Huskins or Wallin with Braun.

4. Move Mitchell to line 4.

by dynamo1 on May 23, 2011 9:58 AM PDT reply actions

I'm sure others will blame McLellan as well...

But I don’t think coaching is why we’re down 3-1 in this series. It comes down to execution, and when you have 5 PP’s in a row and you don’t convert, then the players are to blame. Coach can only play the horses he has and I agree with you that Heater has contributed far too little this year, as well as others. Credit Vancouver and their D for some of that. Blame the entire team for not scoring when they had the man advantage. McClellan stays, or would you prefer Terry Murray?

by douchebags on May 23, 2011 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm also in favour of a coaching change if Sharks lose this series.

McLellan doesn’t seem to have much composure. He loses his cool far too easily. Dude constantly looks like he’s got a pickle up his ass. Moreover, he never seems to change lines; we saw this this year and last; remember when HTML wasn’t putting up any points, yet he still held onto that line?

I know there’s the “chemistry” argument or whatever, but the fact of the matter is, if a line isn’t working, it needs to be split up, ESPECIALLY if the defense knows how to stifle the lines you’ve got. What San Jose needs is a coach who’ll inspire the team. Clearly, this is a group of players that’s easily discouraged, and McLellan obviously isn’t getting the pep talk thing right.

I'll agree with your last point

If the team no longer believes in him or has stopped listening to his message, then yes, it’s time for a change. I guess I look at Lindy Ruff or Mike Babcock, who preach the same message year after year after year, and they have success. McLellan has been very successful (conf. finals 2 straight years) plus he’s DW’s guy. I’d bet on him staying if he wants to that is?

A good coach

will bring the whole team to play to their potential on a consistent basis, in a strong way.
Further, that’s what a team’s captain and alternates should do as well. So if TMC goes, much consideration should go to who wears a C or an A. The strong leaders should wear a C or an A.

Yep

Love to maybe even get a Russian coach in here who will re-teach them the concepts of teamwork, better D, and more endurance. We got too much talent on this team, and it’s definitely not getting used to its full potential. Basically McClellan just expects the team to get it done, without him doing much of anything.

by rightnasty on May 23, 2011 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Curious...

what are you guys basing this on? Thornton has been leading by example every night, every shift. Pretty hard to dispute that, with some of the goals/set ups/plays he’s been in on.

As for TMac, you can’t really tell too much by his media statements. He’s very blunt, and critical of the team, even on the good nights (rightfully so, IMO). Other than that, I thought i remember hearing something about him just set a record this year for most wins of a 3rd year coach. And then there’s the Franchise first Presidents Trophy, and two consecutive trips to the Western Conference Finals. Getting to the Stanley Cup Finals isn’t easy, and there are still teams who haven’t made it there yet.

I do agree, I think maybe the training program needs a tweak for endurance, but right up until this series, Sharks were leading the league in blocking shots by guys like Heatly, Pavelski, Thornton, couture, and Seto.

I don’t think we need a coaching change. I think we need to dump a few of our Mediocre D-Men and get some stand outs with the cap space.

Basing it on performance of the team, not awards

Because when a team is well coached, it shows in their execution. They play as a team, they keep the mistakes to a minimum, etc. Doesn’t matter what sport it is. The Sharks, on the other hand, all too often look like kids playing street hockey. Chaos, people out of position, dumb penalties, so on and so forth. You tell me if I’m being unfair here, but when you watch the games, do they not look disorganized out there at least a third of the time (especially in the 3rd period)? I mean, is Vancouver beating us 3-1 because they’re so much better than us or because we’re coming up short in several departments? A good coach will iron out the wrinkles in a team. McClellan expects the wrinkles to work themselves out.

Yeah, it’s nice making the playoffs. Then again, the Sharks do have a certain reputation in the playoffs don’t they? Let’s be honest here, we squeaked past Detroit, and now it’s not looking that great against Vancouver. President’s Trophy is cute, but this supposed to be about a Stanley Cup, and if we keep beating ourselves, it’s not coming to San Jose.

I understand more of what you're talking about now...

But what of the players? Do you think a better coach would stop players like Pavs, Seto, etc from going invisible/slumping, too?

I’m still pretty reluctant to place a lot of the blame on TMac. I’ve seen the Sharks do amazing things, but in the regular season. I still think it’s the players failing to execute or losing composure at key times. It’s the players that take the Penalties that totally cripple the team, and from the looks of it, it’s them choosing their zone entry and deciding to try to “out fancy” the ‘Nucks, which you’re not going to win in this battle.

I agree with #3 dynamo but otherwise, can’t say I agree on anything else. JMO but I don’t think Mitchell deserves to be on the 4th line at all. I think he has been the bright spot on that 3rd line this series. I don’t think Wellwood should sit… and to bring back Eager just seems useless at this point. The 4th line looked great the past couple games except the McGinn hit in game 3.

I don’t see McLellan as the problem at all. Again, JMO. And I never see him lose his cool. And Lindy Ruff? The guy has been in Buffalo for how many years and has done what with his team? Babcock I can see but not Ruff.

In the three years McClellan has coached...

The team has won the President’s Trophy for the first time in its history, and has reached the Conference Finals for the second and third time in its history.

…And you want to change that?

The coaching staff is incredibly important and can have far-reaching effects on a team, but at the end of the day it’s up to the players on the ice to score the goals. Last year they lost four close games to a vastly superior team, this year they’ve won one game, lost one close one, and games 2/4 are too wonky to really calculate (2, because it was a 3-2 game going into the last 10 minutes, then things went crazy because of Ben Eager; 4, because both teams played down to one another until the last ten minutes, and only some space-flea-induced 5-on-3 craziness occured. I’m not making excuses here, mind you, I’m simply stating that you can’t count on these things to happen very frequently.) and, honestly, I think Vancouver might be better.

Change some players around? Of course. Change coaches? God no…

Sharks need a Bowman or Jacques Lemaire type of coach.

Someone who will inspire them. And tell them exactly what he wants from them.

Currently, all they do is shoot the puck in. And most of the time no one is going in hard to get the puck. Does he really think that Vancouver hasn’t figured that out already?

Why are they shooting the puck at the net from middle of the ice? There is no reason to do that, unless you have someone stationed by the net to redirect the puck.

When McClellan

Was asked during the post game presser last night if his team had the “talent” to win the next three games he said, “we’ll see”. I was left with the feeling that he’s so frustrated with this group and their inconsistent play, that he really isn’t confident that they can win. I would have prefered he lie and say, “yeah we have the talent, and you’ll see it in game 5”. “Don’t count this resilient team out”. But I was left with a much different feeling. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t want to come back unless some significant changes are made to this roster. I hope he stays, and think he’s a great coach, but this team is the enigma of the century!

If you think about it

It’s an honest answer. He doesn’t know which Sharks team is going to show up. Is it the team that can score on the PP and kill 5 on 3’s, playing hard for 60 minutes? Or, is it the team that had 13 give away’s in the last game, couldn’t score on 5 consecutive PP’s, and gave up 3 goals (all 5 on 3) in under 2 minutes? We’ll see?

Same Ole Same Ole

Once again the Sharks didn’t really show up in this game. You can’t take games off in the stanley cup playoffs and expect to win. It was very obvious what team wanted this game more than the other.

Do you blame the coach when the players don’t show up and give their best effort?

It looked like they were skating in mud the whole game. Some of the Sharks players like Heatley, Pavelski, and Devin, just haven’t done their part to get this team over the hump. You can’t win with only one line showing up.

The Sharks are a very good team, but they are way too soft to win the stanley cup.

YOU DON’T WIN THE CUP WITH A SOFT TEAM. WHEN VANCOUVER WHO IS A SOFT TEAM OUT PHYSICALS YOU,

Do have to admit

Worst part of that loss was that half of my family and friends who never watch the Sharks were watching because the game was on NBC. My Mom had called a lot of my family to tell them to watch. That was not a good game to get them to follow the team, that’s for sure!

Alright, on to Game 5 preview, let’s get ready for that!

Time For DW To Get Some Tough Players

I keep hearing that the Sharks are made up in DW’s image. Well that image is of a pretty boy offensive defenseman. Its looking more and more like that is true. When is Clowe and Murray going to get some help in the physical department?
Guys like Raffi Torres kill us, because we are so soft and have no response.

The only game we have won in this series is when we were more physical than they were, game three we kicked some butt.

I AM SICK OF TEAMS BEATING US UP AND WE HAVE VERY LITTLE RESPONSE. THEY CAME INTO OUR HOUSE KISSED OUR GIRLFRIENDS, STOLE OUR LUNCH MONEY AND LAUGHED ALL THE WAY HOME.

Oh, how quickly we forget...

I have to agree. But i find it funny that people are raising this point now. If you recall, only a short two games ago, after the Marleau fight, TMac put Ben Eager onto the ice with the intention of ramping up the intensity and physical play. For the remainder of the 3rd period, Eager flew around the ice hitting anything and everything that moved, chirping opposing players, trying to goad them into fights. The reason he drew so many stupid penalties on it was because of the fact that the ’Nucks were on a roll, and the Sharks were on the run (speaking of offensive pressure). If it had been the other way around, Eager may not have received those calls, and would have been possibly hailed as one of the heroes of game 2. Instead, in response to his attempts to get physical where others have neglected or outright failed, people were calling for his head. Ironic much?

by will_hunter23 on May 23, 2011 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

The Canucks were burying their chances like game 2 anyways. BTW it is hard to get a rhythm going on offense when you spend 10 out of the first 24 minutes in the game on the PK. Doesn’t excuse the number of shots Vancouver had in the 3rd, but I guess they went into shutdown mode. SJ had 8 shots on net in 5 PP’s but their PP was ugly and never got set up properly. There really was not excuse for the penalties they took either. Not at this time of year.

by Josh Dykstra on May 24, 2011 2:51 AM PDT up reply actions

The Canucks went into full-shutdown mode in the 3rd, with no fore-checkers until the lead went back down to 2.

Plus, it’s pretty hard to get too many shots on net when we were so busy killing off the first 5 PPs. It’s pretty telling in my opinion, that the best chance in the first period was the MayRay SH chance.

We played a solid road game, and played just well enough to win. Taking 5 straight penalties to start a road game is never a good idea, but we had the PK step up and kill it off.

I kind of understand your point.

It’s the whole temporary rivalry of the playoffs thing. Now we are adversaries but next season, until the playoffs, we’ll still be hating the Red Wings/BlackHawks more, respectively.

I have to say, with the exception of a few, there have been less and less VAN trolls out there this round than the previous rounds, which is awesome. It’s much more awesome to not have to constantly pull out the “lock and load, go for the throat” responses i’ve had to do to put down some Red Wings trolls last series. Too many of those people are just… unpleasant.

Fair word of advice though, my friend. Be wary when posting over here- emotions run high come playoff time, esp with this Teal fanbase. The truly faithful never waver, but there are a lot of jumpers who can be pushed over the brink pretty easily. It’s why i don’t post on other teams blogs. Just be diplomatic with everyone.

If, no when, we drop Jammer, I think this would be a good move, and not for nostalgia either. He has the experience and the energy to give the fourth line what it needs. Besides, when I went to a practice in March at Sharks Ice, Buster was there with his bag and kid in tow. The message was clear: he wants to come back to the NHL and he wants to do it as a Shark.

Thing is...

I would completely agree with you, except that 29 other teams looked at Owen Nolan and said “Nah…”

It’s easy to say “The Sharks should have signed him, what were they thinking!” after the fact, but then ask yourself why NO ONE else did? You mean to say that, especially at league minimum, he wouldn’t have been welcome on, say, the Islanders or Caps? Any team that could use some scoring depth and veteran presence took a look at him and passed, too.

Sharks fail…

So we’ve had coaching changes and player changes including the goalie so when players, and more so the entire team, fail to prepare and are just not ready to play who/what’s to blame?

We have no vocal leader and like a previous post Owen Nolan was our last true leader. He was not perfect but when something was on the line he did everything he could to lead by example.

We are also missing a Ricci type player who played hard every shift. This team has gotten soft.

While I will always be a Sharks fan, as private investor I can no longer invest when dividends are not being paid.

by SharksFanEst.1994 on May 23, 2011 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

No, you’re right @SharksFan they didn’t win a cup but I do believe that it wasn’t because of lack of effort. It was unfortunate that we acquired some quality players far too late in their careers. Had Ricci, Damphousse S. Thornton, Marchment, Graves, etc. been just a few years younger we probably would have won the cup about 7 or 8 years ago.

Frankly this current team is frustrating to watch. One game they make crisp, clean passes and other games they just look lost. I wish we didn’t have to analyze this teams failures. It’s obvious we’ve been fortunate enough to have a competitive team but just not good enough.

We should really stack our blue line. I believe if you don’t let the other team score you’ve got a pretty good chance of winning. I think too much emphasis has been placed on stacking the offensive side. You see where that has gotten us.

by pc323 on May 23, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand where you coming from.

I think the effort level from those teams was much higher because they didn’t have the talent this iteration has, and it’s frustrating to watch a team with so much talent not match that effort.

Just. Wow.

We’ve made it further than we ever have, which is already a success in my book. Yes, I still want a seat at the big series, but being real, here, this team is, and has been, a constant playoff performer.

Getting the cup is no easy task. If it was, every team would have one. And you wouldn’t see 30 year droughts (i.e. Bruins)

The Canucks. The Bruins. TBL. The Penguins (wow, what a fall). They all wonder why their team “just can’t put in a full 60.”

People knock that phrase out there like it’s that easy. It’s not. On the ice, everything is fast. It’s like trying to play Call of Duty to win while riding a unicycle in a shopping mall. No easy feat.

I haven't completely given up on the series...

but there are some serious flaws that CONTINUALLY manifest themselves with this team that must be corrected or the season will end on Tuesday.

- PP entries into the offensive zone. They scored on the first five PP chances by WORKING HARDER than the Canucks, both in front of the net and behind the net. Now they’re trying fancy little drop passes and weaving entries to get into the zone, and they aren’t WORKING (Boyle is the main culprit here). Here’s a novel concept, chip the puck into the zone and OUTWORK the Canucks for possession, and OUTWORK them in front of Luongo for screens and rebounds. That’s how to score PP goals.

- Boyle is running out of gas. Let Braun play in place of Huskins, who is basically a pylon out there. Boyle is getting exhausted, and is basically useless in the 3rd period because he has to play point for EVERY FREAKIN’ PP. Demers took a lot of the load off of Boyle, and since he’s been hurt, Boyle is carrying too much of the offensive load for blueliners. Plus he tires himself out by skating those lazy back circles whenever he has the puck. Seriously, Dan, pass the freakin’ puck once in a while BEFORE you get to the blue line. It’s easier on your legs.

- SCREEN Luongo rather than trying for fancy tips. Whenever there is a slapshot from the point, our forwards are beside the goal trying to tip the puck in rather than blocking Luongo’s view and hoping for a rebound. It looks like they’re too lazy to try and establish position by fighting for it, so they find a quiet zone next to the goal and try to stick their sticks in the shooting lane. BLOCK Luongo’s sightlines and stuff home rebounds (like Clowe did for goal #2 in game 3).

- Don’t let the Sedins just stand to the side and pick you apart with passes. Watch the Nashville series and watch how they physically attacked the Swedes everytime they got the puck. They don’t like being rushed OR hit. Rush them and hit them… repeatedly. And then do it some more. And once more for good measure. There are no sportsmanship awards in the playoffs. And run Luongo while you’re at it. It’s like the Canadian Olympic guys are afraid to slash him or spray him. Pavelski is whacking away while Heatley/Marleau stop politely.

If they don’t start playing like SHARKS, the whole season ends tomorrow. They’re playing like guppies right now.

To quote Section 120, HIT SOMEBODY…. ANYBODY!

PP

Perhaps 3 good scoring chances on those 5 PP. It’s so odd to lose a game like that when you only give up 13 total shots on goal.

Boyle is spent, partly because he played too many minutes during the second half of the season. Our defense isn’t deep enough, especially on the PP, so Boyle was out there a ton. Time to upgrade the D and lessen his minutes.

I agree if Murray is a defensive liability against the twins, the least he could do is hit crank shaft ’em.

Agreed, esp #3.

I’ve been saying this all series. Watching CHI/VAN, and NSH/VAN, it’s like everyone in the league is afraid to hit them, or go straight for them, knock them down, intimidate them, or whatever. Respect off the ice, but right now It’s playoff time, and you are the bigger team: hit anything and everything in green and blue, short of the cars on the freeway in front of you on the way home! Push them around, chirp and antagonize them until they’re ready to drop the gloves. When they do, Clobber them til they bleed then clobber them some more, until one of the guys in the Zebra costume pulls you off them. Crash the net hard and roost Luongo with Ice a few times. Tell him he’s a bad goal tender and that’s why his mother never loved him, or something. It’s not pretty, but if it’s what it takes to shake them up and get them to lose confidence and make stupid mistakes, for the love of everything under the Force… DO IT. Get mean!

Don’t you love the way the Sharks respond when someone takes out one of our star players. Of course with Clowe hurting there is no one to stand up to someone like Torres.

This is an ice capades team, a bunch of posers who don’t fight for each other. I bet if we had taken out one of the Sedin’s the Canucks would have responded.

I posted above but maybe you didn’t see. Everyone has their favorites when it comes to 4th liners, I’m no exception. Eager has responded to fight for his team mates twice so far in these playoffs- Once in game 1 vs. LA, he beat Kyle Clifford up in response to the dirty Stoll hit on Ian White, and that is what was fueling his whole penalty escapades in period 3 of game 2, and i still hold firm to the belief that IF the sharks had been exerting any pressure on the attack, Eager wouldn’t have had a lot of those calls against him.

I say let him play

I like his energy and I’m willing to risk the rest. Is Scot Nichol benched or hurt? I’d like to see McGinn, Nichol and Eager on the 4th line tomorrow.

by douchebags on May 23, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd rather Mayers than McGinn

McGinn just seems to be throwing irrelevant hits and takes at least 1 boarding penalty per every 3 games he plays. it’s happened once in every playoff series so far. If they can contain his those and get him to light the lamp, i’d be for it.

At the end of the regular season, it seemed like Mayers/Eager centered by whomever was taking up the center for the 4th liners when before Nichol came back. That line had serious mojo, because Eager and Mayers would pick up the puck in the Neutral zone or even their own zone, and start moving pretty quickly down the ice passing it cross ice back and forth making people look really dumb as they drove to the net for scoring chances. i don’t know what happened to that line, but it’d be great to have them back. Maybe put them both on the 3rd line w/ Pavs and then move Mitchell/Wellwood down to the 4th line with Dejardens?

If Pavs is getting dangerous again on the second, i say keep him there though.

Tough guys that might get out of control are not DW or TM type of players. Toughness has never been a priority for a DW team. He likes skaters that look good, like he did when he was a player. Soft pretty players like Heatley, Pavelski, and Seto are more DW’s style of players.

I’m a Canucks fan and the last thing I want to have happen is for history to be made from the penalty box. So many penalties take the flow out of the game, making it painful to watch. Max 2 penalties per team…that’s all I’m asking for from the officials tomorrow night.

by Josh Dykstra on May 23, 2011 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Well-put and I agree

I complained like hell about officiating after games 1 and 2, and even though we got the advantage in game 3, and I appreciated the “make-up calls”, I still complained because the officiating is so f*ckin inconsistent. Game 4 I was unable to watch, but I think my main complaint still holds true. If a team gets more PPs because they’re playing more disciplined, fine. But the whistles blown better be consistent and fair on BOTH sides, and so far, both teams have reaped the consequences of their ineptitude. And maybe in a twisted way that’s “fair” because both teams faced the pros and cons of it? It still doesn’t excuse the refs’ inconsistency.

The calls have been horrible throughout this entire series. I hate when the reasoning behind losing a game is “because of terrible and missed calls” or when a win is complemented with an “in spite of the officiating” comment. For once in this series, can a game be decided by the teams and not the refs?? Is that too much to ask for?

Game 5 = more 5 on 5 play, please.

Not sure if the American sports media is reporting the same stuff, but I’ve been hearing all week how a deal between the Atlanta Spirit and True North Sports and Entertainment have all but completed a sale of the Thrashers, which would see then relocated to the ‘Peg. This all apparently pending a financial review to be done tomorrow, since we’re in the midst of a Canadian long weekend.

How’s you guys feel about this? Is it good for hockey?

I don't like it, personally.

I think the NHL should have the same devotion to the other sunbelt markets that they do Phoenix and it seems a lot like favoritism. That and I think Winnipeg supporters are entirely looking over the fact that they are getting a team back in a similar to fashion to how they lost the Jets. If I had my team taken away, I’d never wish the pain of losing a team on anyone else, even if it meant I got my team back.

The Phoenix and Atlanta situations are night and day

The NHL owns the Coyotes and the city of Glendale is desperate to have a tenant in Jobing.com Arena, otherwise, it goes empty most of the year. Atlanta Spirit Group is outright trying to drive the Thrashers of Atlanta – they’re selling the rights to the teams they own, but are selling the Thrashers separately from the rights to Phillips Arena and the Atlanta Hawks.

That's true.

But the NHL stepped in with Coyotes and a potential bad ownership decision, why don’t they do something similar and help find an owner to prevent Atlanta Spirit from driving the franchise into the ground.

by SharksFanEst.1994 on May 23, 2011 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's why:

Coyotes: Team with expensive building (city needs to fill it to not lose money), phantom ownership, interested buyers and taxpayers willing to put out.

Thrashers: Has next to no fans, occupy a building that already houses another team, ownership has been losing money and wants to sell, no serious offers from Atlanta area.

It really is night and day. The Coyotes are a struggling franchise with some potential, the Thrashers were dead on arrival. The Thrashers have cost their investors tens/hundreds of millions of dollars.

Makes sense.

Phoenix has much more potential/success than Atlanta ever will or had, but I feel like a lot of Atlanta’s problems were due to ownership and not necessarily the city. IIRC, the Hawks have also struggled to draw fans, but they’ve had playoff runs to keep up interest in the team unlike the Thrashers. It’s a lack of team success that has kept the fans away in Atlanta (similar to Phoenix), and not a lack of interest in the game in my opinion. I will contend, however, that the situations in Phoenix and Atlanta are very different after the information I’ve learned thanks to your and Nael’s recent posts.

Never say die.

I missed yesterday’s game because the place we played in brooklyn had no TV (WTF?). When i called home and found out they lost, it kinda killed my day. I had a long van ride home from NYC (5+ hours thanks to a 2 hr accident delay in North Bronx) and the good company of my band mates, among other things, to help get my mind off the loss. Might explain my current positive outlook for a game 5 comeback.

If Tuesday is the last Sharks game of the season, I will watch it and enjoy the fact that i can finally watch my team, on the coast opposite their home, 3 rounds farther along in the playoffs than any of my other friends teams (except maybe Boston). And some of the adversity they’ve faced and conquered this season? Plus the usually playoff invisible Jumbo-Patty combo suddenly showing up in huge fashion and leading the team by example!?

Chokers? I think not. Time for that to go away.

People may call me a fool for it, but I still think that our match up last round held the cup winner. If DET beat us, they would have went on to Beat VAN and win the cup- Not easily, but I think they would have. But they DIDN’T beat SJ. And so, i still also hold firm to the belief that since SJ beat DET, proving they are the better team, they CAN come back from being down 3-1 and WIN, numbers be damned. Shame and woe to all who doubt so hard. If you hang it up so easily what of the players? You get all worked up over a loss and yet you have NOTHING tangible on the line except a foolish sense of pride and bragging rights. The players have their jobs, their livelihood on the line. If you have more on the line than the players… you might have a gambling problem.

I understand being frustrated. I’m tired of taking shit from these ass hat Rangers and Devils fans I’m surrounded by, still using the “choker” label and all the generic “I don’t watch hockey except my team” insults. But isn’t watching sports supposed to be fun? Being a fan, supposed to be fun? It’s not life and death, not for you… so cool it with the gloom and doom talk. Reality is reality, but it’s not over until one team wins a 4th game.

That said, TMac: If you’re holding back Demers until it’s necessary, now would DEFINITELY be that time. The boys are in a 3-1 hole, and need the next 3 straight. If we don’t use everything we’ve got…we’ll be trading hockey sticks for golf clubs.

Regardless of the numbers, i still believe in Teal, and the comeback.

Even if Jumbo is injured I think we’ll see the same level from him. He hasn’t been a slouch, he’s been playing like a man possessed. Plus he owes Torres some payback for that injury… in the way of goals.

Nothing yet, and I doubt we'll get any update on that, if at all.

As long as the kid can skate, I say let him go tomorrow T-Mac. I’m pretty sure an injured Demers is better than a healthy Kent Huskins.

LOL at the people

who want to blow up the team and/or fire TMac.

Last time I checked, this team/coaching staff has made the Conference Finals 2 years in a row.

Not to mention, the teams they’ve faced in both of those conference finals have been stacked. Both Chicago last year and Vancouver this year are loaded with great players they just flat-out will not be able to keep around next year. Chicago lost so much of their depth that they barely made the playoffs this year. Vancouver will face the same problem this off season, and will have to let go of some major pieces to what made them such a successful team.

The Sharks, meanwhile, won’t have to get rid of ANYBODY of consequence, and actually have the flexibility to dump some old, dead weight and replace them with better players for the same price, if not cheaper.

I think a lot of fans are blind to the big picture of how good things are right now in Shark territory.

by BillytheSid on May 23, 2011 6:31 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

THIS

Besides, i honestly don’t think our season is over yet. The Sharks seem to play their best when people don’t expect them to (see game 7 against the Wings when everyone thought the wings would make history, or game 3 against Kings when we were down 4-0), and they seem to play poorly when people expect them to win (see game 2 against the Kings when LA was missing their top 2 centermen, or game 4 against the Canucks when we all thought we’d continue our dominance at home).

Now everyone thinks the Canucks are the better team, and we’re playing in their building which we haven’t been very successful in, what better time for the Sharks to surprise us with a dominant performance!

lol it sounds like i’m kidding but i’m really not. If we can just win next game then we’ll be headed back to SJ and be given the opportunity to push a game 7. I really do believe we can do it.

by Khaaz on May 23, 2011 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I keep hearing the Canucks won't be able to keep their players

Yet I see no indication of this at all. Can someone enlighten me?

According to http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=29, Bieksa, Ehrhoff and Salo are the three big UFAs they have. They might be able to keep one of Bieksa/Ehrhoff, and perhaps Salo if he takes a pay cut. Higgins/Torres/Glass are UFAs too, but they’re making a combined $3.225M this year, so it’s relatively cheap to get them back or replace them with equivalent players. And that’s it. The 1st line is locked, the 2nd line is locked. The 3rd line centre (Malhotra) is locked. Goalies are locked.

It’s possible that they could lose all 3 defensemen to free agency, but if that happens, they suddenly have over $10M in cap space to replace them. So why do people keep comparing this to Chicago circa summer 2010? Totally different scenarios.

by mooo on May 23, 2011 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Don’t forget that Keslers cap hit will be going from 1.75 mill to 5 million next year…

Ah nevermind, his cap hit is currently 5 mill. Probably shoulda checked capgeek first =\

Aside from the top line of the Sedins

What makes Vancouver such a tough team to beat is their depth at defense. There is almost no drop-off from top to bottom. From #1 to #6 they easily have the best defense corp in the NHL. Bieksa and Ehrhoff are going to be looking for big paydays in free agency, and they’d be lucky to keep even one of them. There’s just really nobody out there the Canucks can get to replace either one’s production for the price tag.

by BillytheSid on May 23, 2011 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Vancouver's callups...

Vancouver right now is 9 NHL ready D deep. if they lose all 3 of their UFA D to free agency, they still have a full D roster, with more growing players in the minors. The Canucks defense is not going to have any trouble next year no matter what happens. They used 14 different defensemen this year alone, and their stats and winning percentage actually went up while their injured top 6 were out. I feel the Canucks will sign Bieksa and let Erhoff walk, because they already have Ballard as a mobile defenseman. Just my thoughts.

Speaking of music....

Nice find!

I just realized something.

Game 7 vs. Wings- I posted the video to the Motorhead song “Killers” and a pic of Lemmy pointing- Sharks Dominated and key Wings players got injured in the game. Sharks win big.

Game 1&2 vs. ’Nucks- not posted.

Game 3 @ ’Nucks: Posted the same pic and link as from game 7 vs. Wings, and Sharks dominated…and apparently Erhoff and someone else got injured.

I think we need more motorhead mojo tomorrow. Making a note of that for my phone to remind me…

Hey we ripped three straight W’s from the hands of Babcock and company, no reason why we can’t do it again. A game five win, a decisive win no less, will put the wind, er bite, back in our jaws for a return to the tank. Please don’t let the season end after Sundays debacle of a penalty ridden mess of a game. Please let the momentum shift one more time for a game six back in SJ and plant the seed of doubt in Vancouver’s head. Take this mess all the way to game seven and shove Vancouver’s asses to the ice with a punch to the face! Go get ’em boys!

Just finished watching the Bos/TB game

Their series is a helluva lot more entertaining than ours. I feel like the games have been way too centered around special teams, diving, embellishing, and whining. It doesn’t feel like hockey, let alone playoff hockey. We went from probably the best series in years (SJ/Det) to this crap. I want some real hockey!

exactly!

I was just talking about this earlier tonight with my g/f. Bos/TB has been fast and extremely physical. Great series so far. And a huge difference too. The teams aren’t afraid to attack eachother and lay out some hits.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in the 1980’s and 1990’s, but WTF is all of this “let the attackers skate in and cycle in our zone and do nothing to interrupt them until after they shoot at our net?” Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t that kind of stuff usually end badly for the guys cycling the puck thinking they were the harlem globetrotters? Usually in the way of a brutal and puninshing hit from a Defenseman? I’ve noticed this a lot with the SJ/DET series, and even more so with the SJ/VAN series. It drives me nuts to see SJ just let the other teams star forwards enter the zone and do nothing to put an end to the cycling. Just posing a question here but what would happen if every time say, the Sedins came toward our zone our boys set it up so Murray or Boyle were just waiting to plant a crushing open ice hit on them (much like Kronwall was pulling out last series) and smokes them clean?? Would that fall under interference? And if not, how did Kronwall get away with that twice?

I’m seriously confused as to this. SJ is the bigger team, why is there such a reluctance to get up in the ‘Nucks faces and get rough with them? Push them around. They don’t like it when you do that… and it throws off their “Skate in circles and pass the puck around seven different times and ways before taking a shot then trying to flail and bounce in it’s rebound on the weak side” play.

But we still need each other if we want to win

You believe it’s true it will surely happen…
