Watching the San Jose Sharks over the last eight games has reminded me a lot of their six game losing streak back in the middle of January. This is not to suggest they've taken a step backwards in their game--although, to be fair, it's hard not to suggest that they have-- but merely to illustrate just what they face tonight in Vancouver.
During that six game losing streak the San Jose Sharks struggled and dominated, beat themselves and just got beat. It mirrors what we've seen from the team lately, and honestly, exemplifies exactly what this sport is all about. Game four against Detroit was a back and forth affair that could have gone either way, game five was a dominant effort erased by fifteen minutes of breakdowns, game six could have been a blowout if not for the brilliance of Antti Niemi, and game seven was a well-matched game that saw the Sharks control more portions of the tilt than not.
Game one against Vancouver was well-matched until the end of the second, game two was back and forth until the fateful third period reared its ugly head, game three shouldn't have been as close as it was, and game four was a heartbreaker.
In San Jose's last eight games where they have gone 2-6 they have played three great games and have only gotten severely outplayed once. The other four they found ways to beat themselves, either by having a mental lapse in a single period or failing to capitalize on their opportunities. Credit both Detroit and Vancouver for being excellent opponents that are able to take advantage of course (which is something that is always hard to do when you're writing for a specific audience), but those breakdowns are just as much a product of the opposing team as they are San Jose's own failures.
The Sharks best chance to win this series was Sunday afternoon. What I mean by this is that the difference between a 3-1 series hole and a series deadlocked at two couldn't be more profound, couldn't be more glaring for a team. You win game four and you're heading into Vancouver with the tables turned, the Canucks facing a must-win in their own barn with the immense pressure of that rabid fanbase and media seeping under the wooden doors and strangling the life out of every animate and inanimate object in that locker room. And in your back pocket you have that game six in San Jose, a place where you know the fans are going to be so loud they will be blowing the roof into orbit from the drop of the puck.
But as this organization has a tendency to do, they're taking the most painful route possible in order to get there. As Han Solo once said, "Never tell me the odds! I'm a Sharks fan, they would have killed me by now."
I know this is old hat, but those five missed power play attempts are something that carry over into tonight. That's the monkey on their back right now. Although history will show that the parade to the penalty box in the second period that resulted in three goals was their eventual downfall, the struggles of the power play is where that game was lost.
San Jose doesn't have to score on one of their first two man advantages tonight in order to win. They just need to score more goals*. But capitalizing on the man advantage early on would work wonders in getting their legs underneath them, inject the life that they'll need on the road, and put them in a much more fortuitous situation to achieve victory. It's probably the biggest key for tonight, especially with even strength scoring struggling as it has throughout this series.
*This sentence brought to you by John Madden.
San Jose shot themselves in the foot on Sunday. Shotgun right to the skates. They're a wounded animal right now, caught in a trap that they themselves set.
That six game losing streak in the middle of January parallels the struggles they are going through right now. It's disheartening that those traits have resurfaced at this time of year of course, something I'm sure Todd McLellan and his coaching staff are none too pleased to see. Adversity loses its power when it's self-inflicted. It becomes easy to think about what could have been instead of what must be done.
The thing is, that six-game losing streak mentality is what arguably got San Jose here in the first place-- if they don't hit rock bottom in January who knows where they end up. In some grand and optimistic way, seeing those traits now is probably the only positive this team can take out of a 3-1 series deficit against the Presidents' Trophy winners. It provides a blueprint for where they need to go from here, a map for these tumultuous seas they have traveled once before with weary hearts and minds.
Tonight is the toughest game San Jose will play this series. Elimination game against the best team in the NHL, a team that is playing in their own barn one stride from playing for a Stanley Cup. Doesn't get any bigger than that. A win and things begin to get a little easier, shifts seem a little shorter. A win gets them back to HP Pavilion with a chance to turn the tides.
We've heard all year about the adversity this team has overcome, watched them struggle and eventually bloom before our very eyes. That adversity made them the team they are today.
Tonight is the night we see what it all means when it really counts.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. Goals by Setoguchi, McGinn, Boyle, and Marleau. Joe Thornton has a pair of power play assists.

Sharks get out-played in some categories, but Niemi finally steals a game and the Sharks pick up momentum for game six.
Let’s call it 2-1 Sharks.

SHARKS!!!
No fancy no-look behind the back spin-around passes that result in turnovers in our own zone please. Simple tape-to-tape to get the puck away from our net, help keep Niemi’s blood pressure down. The Canucks are already looking past us, time to show them thats a mistake! WIN THIS DAMN GAME!!

Nope because it will be entitled "History Exorcises Its Demons"
When Jumbo scores the OT goal in Game 7, then does the backslide on the ice. The whole team tackles Jumbo, including Nemo. Then the camera slowly pans over to the Nucks bench with the Sedins, Kessler, and Bieksa crying their eyes out. Alain Vigneault turns ghostly white. And like Detroit in Game 7 of the 2009 SCF, all of the fans in Rogers Arena are facepalming and stunned.

Everything happens for a reason...
…in life. Sometimes I wonder about that, but hell, guess that’s the way life works out.
I am very nervous about tonight’s game!! I am still very new to the game of hockey and I have come to love these Sharks and all that they are. Whether they are playing amazing or like shit, I am still and will always remain a fan and supporter of them, always. It always brakes my heart to hear people nay-say them and talk trash about them (band wagon jumper-offers) when they blew a game, only to be all happy and positive when the Sharks win again. I guess everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions, but to me the real fans will still be there good games, crap games, whatever! No matter what happens tonight, I will still be there to root them on next game, next season, where ever these guys go!
So here is to a VICTORY in Vancouver tonight! Lets get this done guys and come back home and whip them ‘nucks on our home turf too! Sharks can do this! Play with your hearts, play with your souls and do this!!! GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!! WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I watch the ECF series
I’m left with a few unsettling thoughts?
1. Why does my son look more like the mailman than like me?
2. Why are Boston and Tampa Bay playing so much better than San Jose?
I can live with mistakes if the effort is there, but frankly, I’m not seeing it on a consistent basis. Perhaps I’m just too jaded at this point to see anything that the Sharks do through a rational and objective pair of glasses.
We as fans shouldn’t have to wonder in the WCF’s who or which Sharks team is going to show up? If we somehow win tonight, and I think it’s a long shot that we will, I will hope that Game 6 is everything we had hoped Game 4 would be?
We all can see each and every year what it takes to win Lord Stanley’s Cup (whoever the fuck he was?) and I for one just don’t see enough consistent effort (each and every game) from my team in Teal.
Here’s to hoping we score on the PP and that we’re not digging ourselves out of a hole for most of the game.
4 – 1 seems like a crack induced prediction, but I like it!
Go Sharks, it’s your last chance to prove to yourselves and to your fans that you’re still willing to fight and that you’re still trying to win it all!

Set Up Camp, And Take Them Down
I would like to see a great majority of SJ’s offense to set up from behind Luongo’s net. It is in the scouting report that he has trouble when the play starts from there and I have seen some success so far this series.
I played NHL 2010 the other night, and even the video game said during the period tips that I should play behind Luongo’s net. I won the series in 7 and I won that game 4-2, same as my prediction for tonight, goals from Heatley, Clowe, White, and Marleau
5 on 5
If the damn refs can manage to not take over this game it should be a good one!
For 2 straight games the Sharks have been the better team at even strength. Everyone is talking about how good the Sedin’s are – they have 4 even strenth poins between them in 4 games!
After watching amazing hockey for 7 games against Detroit, I’d really like to see a well played game tonight.
If the damn refs can manage to not take over this game it should be a good one!
I can understand people’s frustration with the impact of special teams on this series, but I think we have to come to terms with the reality.
The officials have established that they are going to call the series very tightly, presumably because of all the grumblings about embellishment and various other infractions that one team or the other has asked to be scrutinized. Therefore, the focus needs to be on playing good disciplined hockey.
The sequence of penalties that led to the special teams disaster in the second period were all BAD penalties, and really didn’t leave much room for discretion from the refs. Too Many Men, High Sticking, Delay of Game, Interference, Tripping… you should not take these kinds of penalties in an important game, and you most certainly CAN NOT take them in such numbers.
I agree that the Sedins have been less than impressive at even strength, and really have not been the whole series. But at a certain point, I think you have to credit Vancouver and say the TEAM has put their “stars” in a position to succeed. Vancouver’s depth has been a MUCH bigger factor thus far. The lower lines are getting it done and allowing the skill players to thrive.
When Manny Malhotra went down with injury, I thought the Canucks would lose this ability (especially given the ridonkulous defensive zone draw % Manny had as compared to the Sedins). But even without Malhotra, the Canucks are finding a way to get the Sedins in the offensive zone and on the man advantage.
The Sharks have to find a way to put the Sedins in their own zone, because they’re pretty poor defensively and can be exploited. Even a defensive workhorse like Burrows isn’t enough for them to get their act together sometimes.
GO SHARKS!

I agree
And I’d also parrot what Keith Jones just said on KNBR: The Sharks shot themselves in the foot when they failed to close out Detroit in 5 games, blowing that 3-1 lead in the third period. It forced SJ to play 2 more games and now they look tired and sluggish and are battling injuries.
To me penalties in the defensive zone are often caused by fatigue and that is partly when we took so many penalties in the 2nd period of the last game which ultimately led to our demise. Also, you have to credit Vancouver’s speed, especially the defense, which has negated Pavelski, Setoguchi and Couture to a large degree.
As Mr. Plank was intimating, we brought this on ourselves. And had we taken care of business against Detroit in game 5 and Vancouver in game 4, things might have looked a lot different today. Se la ve!
yes and no..
on one hand, these guys are professional athletes and should be mentally and physically ready for each game, even if it goes seven games. But on the other hand, there is no denying it’s a long season and bodies can get banged up along the way. I think the mistakes were basically f-ups than anything.
@suisundan
Yes: We played 6 hard games against LA and 7 hard games against Detroit
No: Vancouver played 7 hard games against Chicago and 6 hard games against Nashville
We did bring this upon ourselves, no question, but it is made even more galling by the fact that Vancouver has every reason to be as fatigued and sloppy, but have simply executed at a higher level. When that happens, making yourself your own worst enemy against a good team is just stupid.
Here’s to not being stupid tonight! Let the stupidface Canucks be stupid!
GO SHARKS!

What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
I concur.
And…puck luck and bounces. Here’s to hoping we catch some breaks and lucky bounces tonight and they don’t.
@suisundan
I sure hope
It doesn’t come down to a lucky bounce. We better show up for 60 minutes, get a lead and crush them on their home ice. That’s the type of momentum that needs to be created if we have any hope of getting back into this.
PP/Even strength points
The problem with saying something like “The Sedin’s have a combined 4 even strength points between them and that ain’t that great” is that they have a combined 11 power play points. If they had something like 9 even strength points to go with the 11 power play points… that would be 20 points in 4 games. And that would mean the series is almost definitely 4-0 for the Canucks.
What I’m getting at is this: There are only so many minutes in a game, and, in the case of the Sedins, they only average about 19 or 20 minutes per game. If you get your points on the PP, chances are high you won’t be getting them at even-strength. If you did, you’d be averaging something ridiculous like 5 points per game, per player – and the Canucks would be waiting for the Eastern Conference to finish.
The larger point being made here
Is that the Sedins are clearly thriving on the PP. No surprise. They are two of the world’s most dangerous cyclers.
The point we are trying to make is that if the Sharks DON’T shoot themselves in the foot and keep putting Vancouver on the PP, the Sedins would have to work much harder to get their points without the benefit of the man-advantage, where they clearly clean up.
Your point about scoring on the PP is well taken. Clearly, if they’re scoring with the man-advantage, they don’t need to necessarily score even strength, which brings us back to the crux of the problem: The Sharks can’t afford to take penalties, and they have to make the Sedins play more even strength minutes, where it is presumably harder for them to score.

… some of my co-workers. So yesterday I left work early to do a volunteer event and this morning I come to my desk with yet another sports page on my desk from yesterday. The headline is “SINKING FEELING” and Jamie McGinn upside down after the hit (or missed hit) with Ballard.
Away from that, it looks like I’m the only one around here (FTF followers not included) that believe the Sharks are going to pull out a win tonight. The two keys of the game from winthecupsj are: 1. Be disciplined. 2. Take no prisoners. It’s do or die time and I believe the Sharks live to see another day. I hope they shut up all the haters and people that doubt this team. I hope they all have their tail between their legs when I come out with the headline tomorrow that says “STILL ALIVE!”
Plank, I too said Seto and McGinn would score… but I say the score is 3-2 Sharks… Pavelski scores one of the three as well. I already have my game 6 tickets (from my Shark Pak deposit) so I’d really like to have plans on Thursday.

lol…. you have some brutal coworkers! haha…. at least you didnt get blamed for the loss on Sunday like I did yesterday! Well then again, I also blame the coworker that blamed me for the loss for the losses when he goes to home games! And then there are the assorted neighbors here where I work that always say to me, “whats wrong with your Sharks?” sigh…..

I’ve gotten a lot of that too. It’s really upsetting when your own HUSBAND has pretty much written off the Sharks. So this morning I left the house saying “I really hope you look like an idiot tonight when the Sharks live to see another day. A big loser idiot” and walked out. Hahaha!

the canucks are 2-6 this postseason
in games where they could’ve eliminated their opponent. Let’s make it 2-7. GO SHARKS
BLEED TEAL
I like this stat… 2-7 looks REAL good. It will look even better when it’s 2-9. :)

not to troll, but ....
they still have 2 Ws where it counts – in elimination games, as do the Sharks.
obviously. otherwise they wouldn't be here
but if you’re talking about win % and the ability to close out opponents then there’s an argument there
BLEED TEAL
Think your number is wrong
They won 4-3 vs Hawks
4-2 vs Preds
3-1 currently
How do they have 6 elimination-game losses when they have 6 combined losses in the whole playoffs?
I think it's meant to be 2-5 then
3 elimination game losses to Chicago and 2 to Nashville (you guys were up 3-1 against Nasvhille, yes?).
GO SHARKS!
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
1 elimination loss to Nashville
Were up 3-1, lost game 5, won game 6
And 3 to Chitown.
So 2-4
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
"You can't come in my kitchen, kick my dog, and take a box full of ballpoints! Your ass must be crazy!"
it's probably confusing the way i wrote it
but the canucks had 6 games where if they win they would’ve eliminated their opponent. they won 2 of them
BLEED TEAL
If Lightning could do it
then the Sharks can, too. All they need is to show heart and motivation (and some lucky puck bounces) that they are not done yet and come back from a 1-3 series deficit. It ain’t over till it’s over. The Sharks may be in trouble, but they are not finished. There is still hope left. Take this moment and seize it! Go Sharks!
Very true!
The Lightning did it (albeit against a much weaker opponent) this year. Wining the next three games is not completely unreasonable. Daunting, yes! Nerve-racking, yes! But we can do this. This Sharks team has proven that if they can get on a roll and play with confidence and poise, winning three games against Vancouver is very doable. It starts tonight!
Yes
And to get thise bouces, you must play your arse off! They can do it!

Sharks CAN be the better team
I talked to my parents after Sunday’s loss, and they were so pissed they didn’t even want to talk about the Sharks. It happens every year. Good enough for the playoffs, never good enough for the Cup. Even though it is one of the most challenging trophies to win in all of sports..
Anyways, if you look at the second half of the season, the Sharks were the best team in the NHL. When they play their game, they’re unbeatable. When you look at the games in this series, each one has been a fairly close affair…and that’s with the Sharks NOT playing like the ‘Sharks’. If they can find some way to turn the switch on, play their game, they’ll be fine. Win a game away, come back to SJ with some extra ‘push’ from the fans, and they can get to a game 7.
The great second half of the season run proved that they can win if they want to, they just need to get back to competing one game at a time. Cause now, they just look like Vancouver’s psyched them out of their game. There’s no confidence. They just gotta play like they believe in themselves.
He really should help with the PP, and is a much better option than Huskins. (Crap. Why couldn’t Demers wait for one more game! )

The Canucks Bandwagon....
Recently a friend of mine, also a Sharks fan, informed me that a mutual friend was “busting his balls” about the Sharks losing to his “team” Vancouver. It was entertaining because up until this point I honestly don’t think I have ever heard the kid mention anything about hockey, except of course during the Olympics cheering for team Canada along with the rest of us. He allegedly continued to say that the Canucks have the best fans in the league and all sorts of other “facts.” I mentioned that I would have loved to have been there and ask the kid to name 3 Canucks other than, Luongo, Kessler and the Sedins and the see him fumble over his words trying to muster up some names that might be on the team. This lead into converstation about how funny it is to see our facebook walls lighting up with GO CANCUCKS! and SHARKS SUCK and all sorts of other things which during the regular season half of them don’t even mention anything about hockey. Sometimes I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t know what a Hat Trick was (a girl I work with had this problem “why is everyone throwing their hats on the ice??”). Something I would be interested in seeing is the Merch sales numbers this year versus last year. What are all the bandwagon fans going to do when the playoffs are over? Will have all this Vancouver stuff that they will simply replace with whomever is winning next season? Speaking of Merch… do you know how hard it is to find a toddler San Jose Jersey in Canada?!? IMPOSSIBLE! Impossible to find any Sharks Merch unless it has Joe Thornton on it.
The bandwagon is hilarious
Just listen to the fans during the game. It’s dead quiet until the Canucks have the lead, and then they start reminding everyone that they are there. Hopefully today that means it’s like a library until it’s over.
I heard from a fellow poster at NM that CBC kills most of the crowd noises to facilitate their announcers. Although, I had my doubts too. The lower bowl is pretty quiet, given the prices of the tickets.
Even in the regular season game I went to, (although it was against Nashville = yawn) it was pretty quiet too.

What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
Demers/Huskins
I actually think Huskins has been decent in the d-zone, he brings nothing offensively but he hasn’t been a problem defensively.
I wouldn’t be surprise if Demers isn’t in the line up tonight. Yesterday was the 1st time he’s even skated since game 7 vs. Detroit and I’m not so sure a single practice will have him very well prepared to play in an elimination game.
He said he was healthy after missing game 1 of this series so I’m not too sure what him saying he’s healthy now means.
Really, the Sharks need their fowards to step up their game, Seto, Heatley, Pavs, Wellwood, Mitchell, even Clowe can all play much better than what they’ve shown so far.
by milanahalek on May 24, 2011 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions
I should add that if Demers is healthy there’s no question he should play. The Sharks really, really, really miss him!
by milanahalek on May 24, 2011 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree
Huskins has been “relatively” reliable in the d-zone, nothing too abhorrent to point out. The breakdown of the defense has been a complete team collapse, no fault to one specific player.
That being said, if Demers is healthy — hell as long as Demers can skate, I think it’s a no-brainer that T-Mac has to play him (a severe concussion may be the only exception). He just brings so much more to the table than Huskins, mostly offensively. I think I’d be willing to take a slight drop in defensive responsibility for an increase in offensive stature from a d-man, someone who will be a tad more aggressive in the offensive zone. Not to say that Demers is a liability on defense, but he’s not a stay at home defenseman like Huskins. I think the trade-off is worth it at this point.
Can't isolate Demers value to just -(Huskins)
He takes a HUGE burden off of Boyle on the PP. Without Demers, Boyle has spent waaaaayyyy too much time on the PP, and ends up totally exhausted for the 3rd period.
Demers = Better Boyle + Less Huskins

Basically...
They stole the sound of a few other bands, and threatened these bands with legal actions for plagiarism. Moreover, they made it a mission to badmouth competing bands to various promoters so that these bands wouldn’t find steady work. Then there was the Napster thing… That was less about Metallica protecting their intellectual property than trying to block the ability of other bands to get their music out by online means.
They’re a disgrace to music, and that’s not saying anything about their talent.

what?
Seriously? How could that be a trip? That’s a perfectly executed hip check. Not to mention McGinn had no intention of playing the puck either and was going for the hit

The stick and skate were the initial points of contact (with McGinn’s skate). I don’t want to make a big deal out of it—I just thought it was a clean hip check too, initially. This shows it wasn’t.

O_o Really? You thought the stick caused McGinn to fly head over heels over Ballard?
I’m sure it had nothing to do with McGinn coasting, setting up for a huge shoulder-to-shoulder check.

Again I will say
That is a classic hip check. Have you guys never seen one before or something? That is a legal hit, and not pussy in any way. Ballard knew McGinn was going to hit him, so he changed it up and sent McGinn flying instead.

They can
Call a “clipping” penalty if you check someone below the knees, but otherwise a hip check is a completely legal hit that just doesn’t happen much anymore. The Canucks just happen to have 2 guys (Hamhuis and Ballard) who love to throw them

Question about penalties, actually...
There are penalties that I don’t see called anymore, specifically, spearing and tackling. Are these still penalties? I’d never heard of clipping until right now.

I would assume so. I’ve heard of spearing called in recent years, people just don’t do it much anymore. Never really seen a tackling penalty called – they’d probably just call it “interference” now (that one is so broad these days).
Clipping pretty much never gets called – although Ballard got called for it against the Preds last series on a hipcheck, that in no way should have been called. And that’s not me being biased – everyone said it was a bad call

Has been warned many times about his questionable “low” hits. Not sure if he’s been suspended or fined in the past for them? This one was fine in my mind and somewhat entertaining. Glad Ginner wasn’t hurt. I hope both he and Eager are in there tonight. We need their intensity and energy. Plus if things get chippy, I’ll be glad they’re in there to handle our business.
I’ve honestly never heard of Ballard being warned for low hits.

That’s the really cool part about Twitter for rabid sports fans. We get to say what we’ve always wanted to say directly to the athletes. And a good majority of them actually read it. Granted, most people prob don’t have the balls to say it to the athletes face-to-face, but ’tis the nature of the Internet, and being masked behind a veil of relative anonymity makes it that much easier.

Motorhead Mojo and more...
I’ve been watching the Bruins a lot in the Eastern Conference series, and I have been noticing some parallels between the B’s and the Sharks this post season… Mainly in the first round match up. The Habs were the faster team, the B’s were the larger team. One of the Vs. announcers asked Claude Julien if the Habs were able to match the B’s size with their Speed. Julien replied with something to the fact of “They scoreboard says otherwise”.
And it got me thinking- That’s been the problem here in SJ/VAN. SJ is larger, VAN is faster. So far VAN has successfully been matching their speed to SJ’s size. Sharks need to get really physical, and get mean. Start throwing some (legal) crushers. Push them back into their zone and set up the tri pod play, (1 in front of the net, 2 at the blue line, 2 wingers floating around the dots) and just blast Luongo- he’s not that good, and will definitely be giving some up. Don’t let them cross into the neutral zone or gain any room for puck movement or speed. Don’t let them draw you into the Run and Gun game, because YOU WILL LOSE. Just hit them. Keep hitting them. Hit them so hard AV feels it. Then hit them again. Don’t let the Sedins start that euro-fancy footwork nonsense- drop them, trap them so that they’re surrounded and can’t pass. If Torres or Bieksa pull anything, clobber them until they bleed, then clobber them until the zebra’s pull you off. Then clobber them some more. Speed is only effective if you’re moving. Keep shooting and scoring, just like you’re down 0-6 in the 3rd. No lead is enough to bury this ’Nucks team in 1 or 2 periods only.
Scores don’t matter as much as maintaining a lead does. A shut out would be AWESOME, but a win is a life giving win here in the playoffs.
So to answer the question, “Can they match their speed with your size?”… Ask the Habs how that worked out for them in round 1… I’m sure if you call their front office you can find out what their tee times are and which golf courses they’re playing at. I’m sure they can add the ‘Nucks to their party… esp being "Canada’s Team" and all…hahaha. Respect to the tried and true ‘Nucks faithful. the ones who have suffered through the 40 years of misery. Here’s hoping to year #41!

I don't understand the Luongo hate...
“and just blast Luongo- he’s not that good, and will definitely be giving some up.”
I’m assuming you didn’t watch the Canucks play much this year. Lu has been (and continues to be) one of the best goalies in the league. He was top 3 in GAA (which was definitely helped by his defense) and Save %.
Luongo has the 3rd-best save percentage in NHL history. This is all the more impressive given that he played more than half of his career on dreadful teams in New York (Islanders) and Florida.
Yeah
It is always good to stick up for your guys. As someone who has been watching Luongo from the outside (and not that often), I just see him as a wild-card, yes he can be great, but his temperament is volatile and seems like it can be cracked and exploited.
Also, to troll a little, I love that you come to FTF for an intelligent convo, as I just checked out Nucks Misconduct and all the fans just post their predictions, which are all the same of a GWG by Kessler.
Meh
It’s a stupid game we do. Try to get points by guessing the correct score, team, and winning goal scorer. People rarely pick anyone but the Canucks. You get ribbed if you do.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
"You can't come in my kitchen, kick my dog, and take a box full of ballpoints! Your ass must be crazy!"
A Preds fan in the regular season didn’t like it because he didn’t understand why everyone was picking the Canucks to win. Called us smug and preening. Hence why that is in the blog tagline
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
"You can't come in my kitchen, kick my dog, and take a box full of ballpoints! Your ass must be crazy!"
What is most impressive
Is how well he handles the pressure of playing for God & Country. No pressure there, right! He’s a classy guy and if Van doesn’t win it all this year, or collapses against SJ, he’ll get nailed to the cross for it. I wouldn’t want that kind of pressure, but he handles it well. He’s a very good goalie, but by no means the best.
The Luongo Hate
1. He’s overrated, which doesn’t say much because he’s considered to be godlike, and he’s merely an excellent goaltender.
2. He’s overpaid.
3. He’s prone to giving up softies.
4. He seems to be easy to rattle mentally.
5. He won a gold-medal that he’s perceived to have won on the backs of Keith, Seabrook, Niedermayer, Weber and Pronger. Having been at that game, I’ll give this one credence. Canada should win that game 2-0. The US had nothing going, and Luongo gave up 2 absolute softies because he was scrambly and down early.
6. Listening to Rogers Arena cheer LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU is f***ing irritating. I don’t mind cheering your own players, but cheering them for making routine plays? It’s a bit ridiculous. The guy is very obviously an excellent goaltender, but this cult hero status is pretty dumb.

Do I dare wade in here on some of these?
The following goaltenders have a higher cap hit than Lu – which is the only thing that really matters these days:
1. Lundqvist, Henrik " G NYR 29 6 $6,875,000
2. Ward, Cam " G CAR 27 6 $6,300,000
3. Miller, Ryan " G BUF 30 5 $6,250,000
4. Giguere, Jean-Sebastien " G TOR 34 4 $6,000,000
5. Backstrom, Niklas " G MIN 33 4 $6,000,000
6. Kiprusoff, Miikka " G CGY 34 6 $5,833,333
7. Vokoun, Tomas " G FLA 34 4 $5,700,000
8. Huet, Cristobal " G CHI 35 4 $5,625,000
Prone to giving up softies – that’s just confirmation bias. All goalies let in softies. Lu has a “thing” for them, apparently, so you remember them more when he gives them up.
Easy to rattle mentally – Honestly, only against Chicago, and not this year. The blowouts in Games 4 and 5 were team failures, not his, like all the media claim
Gold medal – First goal was a tip. Those are the hardest shots to save. And he saved everyone’s bacon when Niedermayer coughed it up in OT right at the edge of the circle. Yet no one ever mentions that

He's in the top 3
He makes more this year than any of them, but your cap hit take is true. I’d put him behind Miller and right up close to Lundqvist. He’s probably slightly better than Niemi (did I just say that?). But I think that is fair.
I don't know about that...
currently, I’d say he’s about even with Niemi after some of the inconsistencies and stupid mistakes we’ve seen them both make in this series so far. Like I said, difference with Luongo is that his D covers his ass better than ours covers Nemo’s ass.

If we're going to talk cap-hit
Let’s not. Luongo’s contract is a joke. No fault of his own really. But it doesn’t make him any less overpaid.
We remember Luongo’s softies more because they come at big times. Lu get’s the big stage because he’s the big man with the big rep and the big contract. So yes, we remember them when he gives them up because it’s a bigger deal if he gives them up than if a guy like Al Montoya gives them up.
Lu has been hung out to dry many times by his team, no question, but you have to ask yourself at some point if a man of his talent and pay-grade couldn’t turn the tide in any of those games. Good goalies steal games, and I think we’re getting hard pressed to remember any games of merit that Lu has stolen.
Gold Medal game – Yes, the goal was a tip, but Lu was already down, as he so frequently is. That, to me, and you may dispute this as you will, is a sign of a not-confident goaltender getting a bit panicky and rattled. Lu’s softies always seem to be of this variety. He gets deep in his crease, and then ends up scrambling side to side and out of position. Refer again to “softies” and “easy to rattle.”

No hate here...
I see Luongo as a wildcard, yes. He’s either solid as a stainless steel wall, or he’s as leaky as a rear main seal on an old Jeep. In short, he’s good, but once they start taking it to him, he’s got a tendency to melt down and fold. This has happened past years in the playoffs and a few times this year (two games he got shelled in CHI). I’ve been hearing a lot of people just build up this mystique about him being such a great goalie. Honestly, I don’t buy it. Luongo is no Jonathan Quick, Henrik Lundquist, Pekka Rinne, or Ryan Miller… 3 of the best right now IMO. Not so much “hate”, moreso I think the reason he is so good is because he has an insanely talented and deep D-squad in front of him hammering down shots and pinching every chance they get. That’s all.

Jamie Baker
Will be on KNBR 680 AM in San Francisco @ 1:30 PM today (it might be later, they didn’t say). I always like his analysis and optimism. Hey, perhaps he’s going to play tonight and score the game winner!
So...
Jamie Baker said that San Jose has to come out and play smarter than Vancouver by counter attacking. If San Jose can come out of period 1 tied or ahead, then they will have a lot of confidence. He said they just need to play and stop thinking so much; stop making mental mistakes. Their team D has to be better (better PK). Because their backs are against the wall, their instincts will take over. Their desperation will will them to win. Vancouver will not have the same amount of desperation. There will be no hand shaking tonight in Vancouver. That’s basically what he said, as I paraphrase.
I usually agree with Bakes 100%
On this one, I think I have to disagree. The Sharks can not afford to counter attack. They’ve essentially been able to play Games 1, 3 and 4 being close in the first two periods.
The Sharks need to establish an early lead and start playing good boring road hockey in my opinion. Vancouver showed us last game that establishing a lead allows you to play good disciplined defensive hockey and make the game harder for your opponents and easier for yourself.
And, as much as I hate the grit/heart/choke arguments, I’m hard pressed to believe the team has some sort of killer instinct right now that will magically take over. Yes, you must play desperate, but you must also play the sort of hockey that will give you future success, not just now, or you’re just delaying the inevitable.

I think perhaps he was trying to say, like a dog with it’s back to the wall, SJ will leave everything that they have on the ice. I sure hope he’s right?
Sharks have done a great job coming out hard and dictating the game in the first. They absolutely have to stick with that.
Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat and resident doucherocket.
True
You guys seem to own the first. We seem to own the third. Second period goes from game to game.
First few games Sharks looked gassed in the third, though. Seems to be evening out a bit now.
Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat and resident doucherocket.
As much as Van
Wants to close this out and rest up, do you think they’ll get distracted or be too jacked up (taking bad penalties) and unintentionally give San Jose the advantage? Sharks should be a desperate team and you guys know that even if you lose, you still have 2 more chances to close us out.
Man I hope not
If the last 2 game’s parade to the sin bin didn’t teach them anything, we may truly be in trouble.
Canucks looked really relaxed at practice today, but in a good, not cocky way.
They’re saying the right things, but ultimately, until puck drop, your guess is as good as mine. Having been in this position twice in these playoffs, I’m cautiously optimistic.
Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat and resident doucherocket.
And
It seems to me that both teams have taken some really stupid penalties. PP goals are the difference and may decide this one tonight? Not sure why SJ or Van needs to go out there and try to intimidate? Detroit doesn’t play that way, they just make you pay on the PP. Are you guys glad you got SJ and not Detroit? Just curious.
I was 50 /50 going in. The way the Wings had been beaten up by the end of your series made them look like the “easier” team to play. But 2 things.
1. Gotta beat the best to be the best (you guys earned it).
2. Careful what you wish for.
I think most everyone agreed this series would hinge greatly on special teams. I expect to be much of the same. Just comes down to who can be more disciplined and make the PP count.
Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat and resident doucherocket.

I cannot wait for the game tonight, living out on the east coast is brutal, the days seem so much longer when you have to wait 4 hours after work to watch the game.
Agreed!

^^ THIS . What a gem!
That kid got me jacked, especially when he said “I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have!” (Naturally, my ears replaced that with “Vancouver Canucks”)
Who needs Herb Brooks? Pffft. If that kid doesn’t fire you up, idk what will.
All you have to ask yourself is:
Can the Sharks pull this off?
The only answer I can come up with is yes, they have the ability to pull it off. Odds might not be in their favor, but they CAN pull it off. Therefore: I BELIEVE, GO SHARKS!

I'm also going to not watch the game intentionally, to see if I can recreate the mojo that got them to win Game 3
I was also unable to watch Game 3, so I got Plank’s tweets, which kept me informed on the score and such. So even though I won’t be here, I’ll be aware of what’s going on still.

Puck Daddy preview
Puck Daddy has a pretty good preview up today that puts it plain and simple- whose stars are going to show up? As much as Heater has been thrown under the bus recently, lets not forget that Pavelski is not playing anywhere close to where we need him as well. Logan has also made some pretty big mistakes that have canceled out a lot of the good he has done. If those guys can bring their level of play, and POSITIVE impact to the game like Jumbo, Clowe and Marleau, we will win. Either that, or Niemi has to completely steal the game.
Everytime i make a prediction

October 8th, 2010.
On October 8th, 2010 at 11:30 AM I left work early and took a half-day. I rushed home, and got in front of my TV just in time for one of the opening games of the NHL season- the San Jose Sharks vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets. October, f***ing, 8th. From that date on, I have spent hours that accumulate into days worth of time cheering, watching, blogging, commenting, cursing, getting mad, being happy, talking to friends/coworkers/family, talking to fans, going to games, defending our team, buying tickets, flying to the Bay Area, taking the train to San Jose, drinking beers, partying with friends, buying merchandise, being proud… all around and about THIS team THIS year. I’ll be damned if I am giving up on May 24, 2011 after investing 8 months into this team, this chance to win the Stanley Cup. The Sharks still have an opportunity to make the Stanley Cup finals. They have the CHANCE to play for the Stanley Cup. I’ll take that chance, until someone says that the Sharks are not allowed to play games anymore in this season. Leave it all on the ice tonight Sharks! Your fans are right there with you!

Honestly, if the Sharks play with heart tonight and make every shift count, I'll be happy.
Win or lose, they’ve done such a great job this year. Yeah a Cup Final would be fucking awesome, but all I’m asking is that they give tonight everything they have in their bodies.
demers is in
7 D and rolling 3 lines according to B Brazil. i like it, except the 4th line was pretty good last game.
I guess it depends...
On who sits out of the bottom six forwards. It may not be a fourth-liner…

Thoughts on tonight: Maybe McLellan adds Demers in the #sjsharks lineup to go 7 D, and rolls only 3 regular lines vs. #canucks
Looks like he’s just speculating…

We don't get CBC
VS is blinking on and off, and seems slightly scrambled. I checked, and the frequency has changed slightly to get that signal. Tech support says both that someone is out checking on it, and that they’re talking with VS.
I could watch it online, yes, but I want to record it.

They're frequency hopping, now
My cable to computer monitor converter is one of those overseas ones, and I can tune the frequency manually. The main TV and DVD recorder can’t do that. I can now sort-of see the game, but can’t record it, as the weak signal shows as no signal on the recorder.

First time posting on here.
Past Sharks teams I would’ve counted out but for some reason, with this team I still feel they can beat these odds. When they were getting their asses handed to them against the kings up against a 4-0 lead, I told my friend that “they would mount a comeback!” Just look at this season. Last year in every series I was having a heart attack even when they beat Detroit in 5 games I was still wondering about the Hawks. Eventually they swept last years team and won the Stanley Cup.
This year I feel more confident even though a good chunk of the first and second round series were sudden death goals, I never doubted. With this team, it seems they play their best when faced with real adversity. I expect nothing less then their best effort. This group has the talent and the heart, can they put it together when they need to? Folks, expect a great game.

Once again, Marleau blows his defensive assignment and the Sharks demonstrate a clinic on how to blow a 5-3.
