FTF Podcast: Setoguchitrick

Photo

In the twelfth edition of the Fear The Fin podcast Jason Plank and Matt Taylor break down the huge game three win over the Detroit Red Wings, muse about Devin Setoguchi's hat trick, look at how well Thornton has been playing, and discuss the impact Antti Niemi has had on last night's victory (as well as the series as a whole).

Furthermore, the guys debut two brand new commercials that have never been used on the podcast before and answer some questions from people who called our FTF call in number (you can leave a voicemail for the podcast at 502-FTF-1023).

Enjoy.

[Ed. Note]: Looks like the audio files of our calls didn't work when we transferred them, which is kind of awkard considering the portion of the podcast where the questions are being asked is silent. Here's the order of the questions for those of you listening at home:

20:05-- Is the rivalry between the San Jose Sharks and the Detroit Red Wings the best one in hockey right now?

23:15-- I noticed Benn Ferriero playing shifts with the top three lines tonight towards the end of the game while Mayers and Nichol sat on the bench. What are your thoughts on this?

25:25-- Did Babcock make the right move in changing up his lines? Where does he go to now?

two thoughts on the game now that I've

had time to digest it…

1), Mr. Plank, I think you were right when you said Niemi is one of our possible game changers (in the series preview).

2), Maybe you missed at least one: the Goooooch! (Gooch can also thank Thornton for the hatty).

Between both of their hot “hands,” the Sharks won this game. :) Gooooo Shaaaaarrrkss!

Sweet! Get in to work this morning, and a podcast is waiting for me!

Good stuff, guys.

Gotta say, as far as lineup changes go, I think Detroit should put Modano in next game. The reasons being two-fold. One, he knows us, has beaten us, and likes to score against us. And two, it might be his last chance to suit up for a playoff game…who knows? Be nice to see one of the greatest American players of all time not end his career as a healthyish scratch for a team getting knocked out quickly in the second round…

Agree about Niemi steping his game up this series too. Man, he was so awful in the series against LA, this has been a rather stark turn around. He’ll need to keep it up if the Sharks want to win more than 8 games this postseason.

Finally, on Boudreau. I think its unfortunate what’s happened to him in Washington, because I think he is a very good coach…in some aspects. He’s a great developmental coach. He’s good at teaching kids how to play hockey, and implementing systems, and getting players to buy into what he’s teaching. I think where he suffers is in game management, and in series adjustments…and he suffers there big time. He just never seems to have his finger on the pulse of the team as to when to have an optional skate, and when to kick their ass…as to when to let line combos ride, or when to change them up, and then how to change them up. Sometimes it seems like he’s just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks when it comes to line combos…and you have to know your team better than that.

So, yeah, I think he’s gone. The Caps will have to change something after this latest debacle. Its really too bad they can’t just send him back to Hershey so they still have his developmental talents in the system…but it never works that way.

Still blows my mind that the Lightning swept the Capitals. Blowing my mind. Hopefully the Sharks can do likewise to the Wings on Friday.

It is nuts that Tampa swept

But they’ve looked almost unbeatable since they were down to the Pens 3-1. And they have been unbeatable since then. They’re looking just like the Sharks right now: great goaltending and scoring from everywhere. That would be an amazing (and amazingly scary) SCF matchup.

Very entertaining match last night. Without a doubt one of the best displays of special teams, defensive tenacity by DET with their rediculous amounts of hits recorded and Jumbo getting it ALL done and throwing everything he had out there, including the kitchen sink which, may have recorded a goal if it had skates. Loved the way DET collapsed onto Joe in overtime just as he made the pass to Seto. My cheeks tightened when I saw the play developing and just as I got off the couch in anticipation, it was all over! Awesome!

Question for all of you:

If all of the series go 4 or 5 games, does the next round start sooner or do we wait as though one of the series had gone 7?

by warning on May 5, 2011 9:00 AM PDT reply actions

Should be a wait until all of the series are complete.

Yes, I know that

But only that long, or do we wait longer if every series is short.

by warning on May 5, 2011 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

We wait untl the schedule is released, but I don’t think that the league makes the teams wait past scheduled games that were unnecessary.

I was sorta hoping we'd see

a “history will be made” comparing last year’s series against Detroit to this year’s. The motto would be, “what if history didn’t repeat itself?” (as it did last night). Of course, we don’t want history to repeat itself tomorrow night (and I’m pretty sure it won’t—for one, we have Niemi this year, hehe). Go Sharks!! Get this last win in the series!!! In the Yahoo article (from today) for tomorrow night’s game, i like the Cpt.’s attitude alot.
