Sharks swimming in new waters during 2011-2012 season

As the sleepy summer slowly putters along towards the unforgiving abyss known as "August", a moment of reflection is in order for those who have moved on from the San Jose Sharks organization. At least seven players will not be returning to the San Jose Sharks next season, and an eighth (Kyle Wellwood) looks unlikely to be re-signed either.

From depth players to top six talent, the Sharks have gone through a fairly significant roster overhaul for next season. Here is where everyone has ended up.

Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi (MIN). Traded to Minnesota along with Charlie Coyle and a first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Setoguchi and Heatley both played top six minutes last year on a Sharks team that went to the Western Conference Finals. Heatley's disappointing offensive season and Setoguchi's inconsistencies as a goal scorer made them casualties in an offseason where San Jose looked to get better defensively at even strength, with Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson landing number two defenseman Brent Burns and two-way winger Martin Havlat in return for their services. The Minnesota fanbase is excited and optimistic about the acquisitions, lauding the fact that both guys love to shoot the puck.

Expect Heatley and Setoguchi to receive oodles of top six minutes and contribute heavily on the PP with the offensively challenged Wild.

"Acquisition of Brent Burns is a clear win for San Jose" [link], "Sharks Acquire Martin Havlat from Minnesota Wild" [link]

Ian White (DET): Acquired leading up to the 2011 NHL Trade Deadline, Ian White's offensive pop from the backend played a big part in San Jose's success down the stretch. He continued that solid offensive play during the postseason, potting one goal, eight assists, and finishing a +3 in 17 games with San Jose. Although the acquisition of Brent Burns made White a piece the Sharks did not need on the backend, his offensive abilities will fit well in a Detroit system that preaches movement and puck control. With Brian Rafalski's retirement opening up a wide hole in the Wings top four, White will be expected to step in and contribute immediately.

Expect White to see top four minutes with the Wings, potentially on the top pairing with Nick Lidstrom, and certainly play top minutes on the power play.

"Ian White acquisition may be Trade Deadline's Best" [link]

Scott Nichol and Kent Huskins (STL): Nichol and Huskins will play a large part in the veteran movement St. Louis focused on during free agency, joining Jamie Langenbrunner and Jason Arnott as leaders in the locker room for a Blues team that is young and improving. Although Nichol seemed to have lost a step last season, finishing the year with a smattering of injuries that required surgery this offseason, his ability as a fourth line centerman who is great in the circle and able to contribute on the PK will be a welcome addition to the Blues 18th ranked penalty kill. Huskins was a depth defenseman in San Jose-- while he consistently received criticism from the fanbase for his errors in the defensive zone, his underlying numbers were quite good for a player who was seeing bottom pairing minutes.

"UFA of the Day: Scott Nichol" [link], "Sharks Gameday: Monkey! Knife! Minus The Bear!" [link]

Star-divide

Jamal Mayers (CHI): A solid enough role player on the Sharks fourth line, Mayers was a consistent player who provided some good energy whenever he hit the ice. Although he was not an impact player by any stretch of the imagination, Mayers' defensive ability and decent speed should help the Blackhawks out next season in a limited role.

Ben Eager (EDM): Eager's brand of physicality and excellent hands were always marred by his propensity to take penalties at the most inopportune of times. An above average skater who isn't afraid to lay on the body, Eager's role as an energy player with toughness could fit in with Edmonton provided he delivers on the promise he had as a prospect who was drafted in the first round of the NHL Draft. If Eager can figure out how to stay out of the box and focus on utilizing his skill set to chip in goals for the Oilers third line this contract could end up a steal-- if not, a fourth line role with limited minutes will be his career calling card. We're betting on the latter.

"UFA of the Day: Ben Eager" [link]

Kyle Wellwood (UFA): It's a big surprise that Wellwood hasn't found a home yet, and an even bigger surprise that no NHL teams have called him to inquire about his services. Wellwood was a third line player with the Sharks who saw easy minutes, but his chemistry with the Hellacopter Line (Mitchell, Pavelski) was able to push the play in the right direction earned him full marks from the Fear The Fin staff. Although he doesn't have the size or physicality to play the typical "third line checker" role that many organizations expect out of their bottom six forward group, Wellwood pushes the play in the right direction and would be an excellent addition to any team looking for defensive responsibility to go along with the scoring depth he provides.

We don't have enough good things to say about Wellwood for the role he provides. Although he destroyed his weak comp and had some of the best advanced numbers on the team, Wellwood does not look like he will be offered a contract as the Sharks attempt to get bigger and more defensively oriented on their lower lines.

"UFA of the Day: Kyle Wellwood" [link]

[Update] Niclas Wallin (SEL): For some reason Wallin slipped my mind on the first go around, which doesn't make much sense considering this interview kicked off one of the greatest memes in the history of Fear The Fin. In celebration of his service to the organization, feel free to share some Hamburger Haiku's in the comments. Here is one to get you started:

Farewell D Wallin/ May Sweden bestow to thee/ Heavenly hamburgers

That's the plan

I think he’s come to terms with the fact that he’s got no other path to a starting job with a contender than to play for them for at least part of the season.

Yet another consequence for Nabby.

He turned down Philly last year. Would’ve been an UFA if he would’ve just played out the season with NYI. And now he’s looking at what Bryzgalov recently got, and all of those other goalie signings for that matter.

That's why

his ass should have did his time and played for the Islanders. I’m sure he knew what the rules were, he just thought he was above them. Not so. Maybe he would have ended up getting that desired contract with Detroit after everything was said and done. Not feeling sorry for him at all.

If you think about it...

with his age, isn’t it a bit more of a possibility he’d have ended up in a more “vokoun-ish” bracket?

That said, I feel Tomas really took a paycut for a chance to play for a real cup contender…

It still irks me that White signed with the Red Wings.

I don’t like seeing anyone that was even remotely good go to a team like that, especially the Red Wings and our probability of seeing them in the playoffs every year. This is one of the reasons I liked the Wild tradings so much. They may be an improved team, but they still don’t scare me.

Out of this bunch of players, I’m going to miss Seto the most. He had a flair for scoring goals in bunches, and you knew once he got a few that you were about to enjoy quite a show. Last year’s hat trick in the playoffs still makes me smile. What a freaking game that was! Goodbye Seto =(
I’ll miss White too, even if he isn’t the most defensively responsible blue-liner out there. It just bothers me that we picked up 3 players in the second half of last season and none of them are being retained. Guess that’s what happens though.

Perspective from Minny

Minny fans seem to be pretty excited about Heatley and Setoguchi. I’m reserving judgement until I see how they play with the Wild.

I hope Burns does well for you guys! He’s the one I’ll miss most (which is why I’m now following Fear the Fin), but I’ll be there to see him play when the Sharks come to the X.

I've got that right now.

I have the vents open and a big fan in the window, blowing outside. This drags the cold air from the vents into my room while forcing the trapped hot air out. The only issue is when I have the TV on and/or the 360 running… It gets like a furnace in here. In that respect, I’m somewhat grateful my PS3 is bust… That thing could boil water.

Invest in a personal portable AC unit. High quality one runs around $400 but lasts a long time. Run the exhaust hose to the window, close it on the port, and enjoy your 60 degree cool air blowing directly on you. Close the door to the room you’re in and put a towel in the door gap, and you got yourself a personal room that can sta at 75 degrees easily.

I'm a student.

Can’t afford something like that. XD! Plus I still have to buy a desktop and a new PS3.

I reassembled a desk fan last night (electrocuted myself, too! I’m in electromechanical engineering, and for whatever reason, it didn’t occur to me to keep it unplugged while I worked), so I’ve got that blowing in my face while I have my TV on. I have my main light off, though, and that seems to be what’s keeping it real cool in here.

I will miss Seto and Coyle

I love that Seto grew up a sharks fan and that he loves the franchise. It is my hope that after his tenure in Minnesota, he finds his way back to SJ. I am pretty new to hockey fandom, and I do not know much about Coyle, but I heard great things and I hate to see a 1st rounder and Coyle given up. I wish we could have just kept Coyle. Heater—I think he would have had his best year with SJ if he stayed, but I like the way our team is looking right now.

I don't really get how anyone can miss Coyle

Sure I’m sad we won’t get to see how he develops. But he never played a single game with the Sharks and we therefore have zero memories of him. I can see how one can be sad, but “miss” doesn’t seem to be the right word for this. It’s like missing a girlfriend you never had

I'll miss Heatley the most...

Mostly because he was a big named player who actually wanted to be here…and is now being unfairly scapegoated for our lack of SC winning. He seemed like a nice guy who genuinely worked hard while he was here. Also, his talent was undeniable, even if he never fully showed it in San Jose the second year. I’ll never forget his home debut hat trick game, though. That was epic.

I'm glad he's gone, although...

I was optimistically excited when he came here. After listening to Drew on the radio in Toronto, Canada, talk about how much his game has fallen off and how he needs to rededicate himself to strengthening his core and legs, I’m glad we got anything for him. 5 goals in 32 playoff games is not scapegoating to me.

I don’t know about “scapegoated.” DW will use his assets to better the team, and if he sees an opportunity to sell high, he will. I don’t think he was pinned with the Sharks losses in the WCF.

It’s a gamble, because Heatley was a game-breaking player in Ottawa, and for short stretches as a Shark. I’m certainly going to miss his ability to get his stick on the puck despite ferocious crease-play. Then again, we hadn’t really seen that for a long while. Havlat’s never been as good as Heater was at his best, but it may be that Havlat will be the better player for the next 3-4 years and beyond.

Yeah he did seem like a nice guy. When he came here from Ottawa, I actually tried not to like him, kinda’ swayed by all the rumors about him, like ‘he was a drama-queen’ or something, ‘publicly ranting to get traded out of Ottawa,’ or so they said.

So I tried not to like him at first (even when he scored a hattie in his first game here), but then I never once saw anything from him that was even half-way douchey, and always thought that he genuinely wanted to be here and was a great teammate.

by JenLovesHockey on Jul 12, 2011 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much this. I have a feeling his accident pretty profoundly affected him, and made him pretty serious and not a little inward looking. This got interpreted as selfish in Ottawa by the clown show Canadian press and the assholes that took over the Sens management following their Cup run.

Yeah that’s the thing, Ottawa is a TERRIBLY MANAGED organization. Their charade of firing halfway-decent coaches, one after the other… and that firing of coach Clouston (can’t spell it) by the GM – and then the owners “overriding” it – only for him to be fired again months later… all that drama. They’re full of drama over there.

I really tried to dislike Heater, but you can tell that he fit in well with our guys. I remember when he first got here, how much he appreciated Patty giving him to keys to his car to use for a while – I think that really got to Heater. “Wait you’re loaning me your car – knowing that I could afford a rental – and knowing about my accident – wow.” I think he knew that he was coming to a good place and a well-run organization, and he always seemed to apprecaite being here…

by JenLovesHockey on Jul 12, 2011 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m glad that Heatley is gone, but I also think he definitely has an unfair reputation. The guy was nothing but a class act in San Jose but he never really brought what was expected of him, being the highest paid player on the team.

Pretty much the only enduring memory I have of Heater is his hat trick during his first game in San Jose, for a “fucking All Star” more should be expected

Question: Everyone is saying we are better defenisvely at forward with the Havlat/Heatley trade. When I remember watching Havlat in the past, I don’t remember him exactly being defensively sound… and when I check out Hockey Wilderness, they also don’t understand how everyone here says he’s a good defensive forward. Now, it’s not hard to be more defensive than Heatley but it seems like most think this trade is good in a defensive sense… can someone enlighten me a bit?

by meetyourmako on Jul 12, 2011 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

This

Also, Havlat is MUCH stronger with the puck than Heatley, which means fewer turnovers/odd man rushes the other way. And if Havlat ever does turn the puck over, he is fast enough to actually recover and get back in the play, unlike Heatley.

Havlat’s also a much better on his skates, so he wont be falling down left and right like Heatley would. Those aren’t necessarily defensive skills, but they make Havlat less of a defensive liability.

by ChangoT on Jul 12, 2011 1:06 PM PDT reply actions

So, basically you’re upset that we traded Heatley for Burns. That’s logical. Havlat and Seto are a wash in goal scoring right now, with Havlat a better playmaker and Seto a better goal scorer in a couple years. As the playoffs went on, our vaunted 3rd line was getting blasted off the ice because they were small.

Everything this team is doing right now is aimed at playoff success, and that’s what it has to be graded on.

by Kazoonole on Jul 12, 2011 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Look at most other teams, they don’t have the 3 scoring lines and they do just fine. Our 3rd/4th will be able to contribut a couple goals here and there just like normal. I’d prefer to be 3 lines deep, but if you can’t have that, then a defensive shutdown 3rd is the next best thing, and thats what it looks like DW’s aiming for.

by VVhirlwind on Jul 12, 2011 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

You act as if we're done doing things

We have two scoring lines, and have pieces in place for a checking line, as well as a line where many of our prospects, some of whom have shown genuine potential, might be given a real shot at cracking the lineup.

Not to mention the scads of cap space available to make a deal wherein we absorb salary, or simply put money towards guys like Burns and Couture, who are hopefully a part of the core going forward.

Exactly

I think the team is better on paper already because of the improvement to our defensive unit. It wasn’t good enough last playoffs. I don’t think Boston had 3 scoring lines, but their big, tough, physical play coupled with some speedy and timely scoring made all the difference. Niemi is not Tim Thomas, but may be good enough to get us back to the Conf Finals. To get past that level, we’ll need contributions from more/new guys. You cannot score 5 playoff goals in 32 games and expect to stay on the team. Especially when you’re making over $7 million per year.

by douchebags on Jul 12, 2011 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Count me in as a person who will miss Seto the most

followed by White, Welly, Heater, then Nichol. Even though he was an inconsistent goal scorer and frustrating as hell to watch sometimes during the regular season, he really turned it up during the playoffs, when it mattered the most. I will also miss his on ice personality and the opportunity to meet him off the ice as well. I was certain that, like Couture, he would be the next generation of our franchise players. Oh well, I can dream he’s coming back one day…

As for White, like I’ve said before and said again, I’m a big fan and I expect big things for him with Detroit. I definitely can see him (and Detroit saw this as well) as being a perfect replacement for Rafalski. I can see him with the Wings for the rest of his career.

Welly, I’m gonna miss him as part of the Hellacopter line (if he doesn’t come back, which is close to certain). His playmaking skills on the third line were a sight to see.

Heater, well what can I say. Even though he is a nice guy, wasn’t a big fan of the trade for him and continued not to be a fan during his stint here. Hoping him the best in Minnesota.

Finally, Scott Nichol. See him hanging up the skates after his stint in St. Louis. Wishing him luck.

I was never on the Huskins hate wagon

Simply because the one thing he COULD do, was play defense as opposing teams entered the zone. He was no offensive threat, sure. But he was never out of position, and you never saw him chasing after a breakaway. Defensively, he was a lot better than bullies here give him credit for. From the red line back, in a 2-on-1 situation, I’d take Huskins over Vlasic, Demers, Braun, and for arguments sake, Ian White.

Huskins did dirty work, and he did it well. With his loss, and Vandermeer punching people a lot, we’re still missing someone who can stop teams entering the zone. Burns is an offensive threat, with huge size. Fantastic. But from the highlights I’ve seen, Burns gets caught low, a LOT. Meaning, if he doesn’t score, the other team is off to the races.
prepare for breakaway city, or pair him with Murray and leave Murray at the red line.

I know you’re not big on Vlasic, but I have to say, hands down, Vlasic thrives on 2 on 1s. His skating and positioning are textbook in these scenarios and he always is able to either push the play outside or slow it down enough to get the backcheck involved.

That being said, yes, I think Huskins was pretty solid defensively, and got a bad rap for his salary.

It’s kind of weird to criticize Vlasic for a lack of physical play, and then slot in Huskins in his place. Huskins is a less talented Vlasic. Demers has a bit of a mean streak that could be refined.

Agree with you 100% here

I know you’re not big on Vlasic, but I have to say, hands down, Vlasic thrives on 2 on 1s.
but I really, really never liked Huskins and thought he wasn’t at all solid defensively. He probably didn’t suck as much as I’ve complained about him, but I thought he was at the bottom of the barrel among all our D over the past few seasons.

by JenLovesHockey on Jul 12, 2011 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I should probably stay out of this debate…but i agree that all the Huskins hate is completely due to his price tag. He wasn’t that awful, but for what we were paying him he was terrible.

I would change my name if I knew how.

Huskins had two speeds.

Slow, and slower. Vlasic looks liek a dainty little figure skater. He skates so pretty into the corners, then gets tossed off the puck like a fly at a picnic. At least Huskins would get in the way. Sure, he wouldnt’ do much. But he slowed the other team down long enough for backup to arrive.

Vlasic is an offensive defenseman. And his toughness, IMO, is questionable.

I like my goals like I like my booze..... Top shelf.

Wha? I dunno, you’re way off imo.

Vlasic’s not an offensive defenseman, he’s a defensive defenseman with some puck-moving ability.

by Khaaz on Jul 12, 2011 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

WAY OFF. Vlasic showed promise a few years ago with a 30 point season but it’s undeniable that he is a defensive defenseman. Pure, Stay-at-home, Shutdown defenseman.

Yup

He’s only an offensive defenseman in NHL 11, at least when I play. He isn’t gonna scare anybody off with his shot, but the fact that he’s not a slouch at moving the puck around should boost his stats since the odds are he’ll be paired with someone with better offensive instincts for the whole year, among Demers, Burns, and Boyle.

by THEMARD on Jul 13, 2011 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Vlasic is the same height and officially 7 lbs. heavier than Lidstrom. Vlasic will never be Lidstrom (mostly due to Vlasic’s lack of offensive instincts), but defensively they are very, very similar players. They are exceptional positionally, but not punishing hitters.

The defenseman on the Sharks I would most want to handle a 2 on 1 would be Vlasic, by a country mile.

He was the one I wanted to come to SJ, and he wanted to come here. I dont know about anyone else, but I wasnt expecting him to be traded. My friend is probably the biggest Dany Healtey hater in the world, and I told him on multiple occasions that DW wouldnt trade Dany. Well, I was wrong. He has the skill to score 50+ goals when he’s healthy, too bad we never got to really see him at 100%. I expected big things from him.

I also will miss Seto, but it didnt hurt me as much as the Healtey trade. And it should be noted that he was the one skater we thought would be traded. He was our only trade bait, so i was expecting Seto to be gone. But not COYLE! :(

Miss a bunch

While Heatley wasn’t much of a clutch player or defensive-minded forward, I will still miss his mental game and attitude he brought to the Sharks locker room. I will miss the burger line too.

I will miss White’s grit and mental game too; he wasn’t really a top shelf d-man but still contributed very much to the team, especially for a player who saw postseason action for the first time in his hockey career.

One thing that strikes me the most is giving up Charlie Coyle. I spent some time keeping track of him and researching him after his first year at Boston University; I was very excited to see him play in teal a few years down the road. Giving him up was overpayment. I would have thought giving up just Seto and our 2011 first round pick would have been enough to land Burns.

Once this season starts

I will have a better idea of who with what talents I will miss the most, of course if the Sharks win the cup, I wont miss anyone. It will be a knot in the stomach if Heatley and Seto have carrer years, even though I hope they thrive in their new home. Not a Wallin or Huskins superhater, however I wont miss their play… I shutter at the thought of possibly wishing those two were back.

I agree

His salary was high. The thing that bugged the hell out of me was his turnovers in his own zone, for one reason or another they just seemed to be more magnified then if Boyle or Murray would make the same mistake.

Are players/agents getting the fever?

The LA Times reports Drew Doughty’s numbers approaching 6.5 million/year for 9 years. With Stamkos and Weber still undecided I wonder what this extra cap space really means to teams once the big boys take their bites and lower level contracts follow suit to eat up the remains?

I really think Wilson ought to ask permission to give Burns a longer deal.

Seems to be what everyone’s doing to keep their D-men under 7-8 million. If he can’t go past 4, I wouldn’t be shocked if Burns wants $30 million. Better to try for 7-45 or something in that case.

I didn’t even think of that bro that’s hella smart. We really need to get younger Thornton for Paajarvi straight up that could be a steal. Maybe throw in Braun to sweeten the deal. Thornton is way on the downhill I bet DW will do it he knows when players are past their prime and I think Jumbo is dunzo.

by SanFranciscoKnights on Jul 14, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

If you're being honest about trading Jumbo...

You gotta be kidding. Joe Thornton is one of the best hockey players in the league. Sure, he doesn’t put up as many goals as he used to, but did you not see his work ethic the ENTIRE playoffs?

For once, the Versus commentators were complimenting the Sharks (Jumbo in particular) for the intense backchecking (which Jumbo was doing 100% of the time).

Crazy idea: Lets bring back Milan Michalek!

Michalek would be kinda awesome for our 3rd line and we have the cap space for him. He’s a great two way player with tons of speed who would give us a lot of flexibility since he can play either a defensive role against top competition or he can play in a scoring role anywhere in our top 9. This year on the Sens he had the 2nd highest qualcomp and he crushed his competition with a 1.002 Corsi Rel QoC which was the highest on the Sens and around the 15th highest in the entire league.

I wonder if the Sens would trade Milan Michalek back to us though. He doesn’t have a very good contract (thanks DW!), which makes me think that we could maybe get him without giving up too much. He has a 4.3 mill cap hit that doesn’t come off the books for 3 more years, but he doesn’t have a NTC or anything so we could always trade him if we really needed cap space later.

The problem though, is that the Sens are near the cap floor so they may actually like Michaleks big cap hit. Personally though i’d be willing to trade Justin Braun or some picks for him.

Uhhh, you realize that the heatley trade only opened 2.5 mil…………We had plenty of space to go for people, it just didn’t happen. All the higher quality people that were aimed for got overpaid, and the medium quality people that were aimed for got 3+ year deals.

Once the Burns deal happened there was absolutely zero reason to do an overpayment for a role player.

Also remember that the Sharks organization was in the red last year by ~3-4 million. The cap went up by almost 5 million. As a growing business, you don’t just green light a possible 8 million dollar deficit just because it is allowable. The Heatley trade shows that there is an internal cap (unless we see some up to the cap move on a let go high end arbitration player, which is doubtful especially because that is based on luck, you don’t move a player for cap space without a done deal) for this year.

As much as we want the team to spend to the cap and super deck a team regardless of the consequences for next year, the finances play a large role in everything.

by VVhirlwind on Jul 15, 2011 4:48 AM PDT up reply actions

2.5 mill is a lot, but yeah like i said above DW would’ve still struck out i’m sure.

Eric Belanger at 1.75 mill for 3 years? Who cares if it’s a 3 year contract, that’s a great deal that DW should’ve tried to make.

There are tons of other quality guys out there that got signed to 1 or 2 year deals for peanuts.

Andrew Brunette got signed to a 1 year for 2 mill with the Blackhawks and he averages 50 points a season playing on terrible teams.

I would’ve loved to signed Jeff Halpern to play on our 4th line, but he got signed to a 1 year for 825k.

Simon Gagne would’ve been an awesome addition for our top 9; he scores goals, kills penalties, and plays well defensively, but LA picked him up for 2 years at 3.5 mill per year.

Ponikarovski could’ve been a good addition to our 3rd line, but he got signed to a 1 year for 1.5 mill by Carolina.

There are plenty of other good players that got signed to cheap short term contracts. Just cuz Ward and Brooks Laich got overpaid doesn’t mean that there weren’t any other good players out there that could be signed to a fair contract..

by Khaaz on Jul 15, 2011 5:21 AM PDT up reply actions

And I'm sure DW tried to get

a lot of those guys. For some reason, I guess sometimes players just don’t want to come to San Jose.

by BillytheSid on Jul 15, 2011 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

On top of that, his actual remaining salary is 4.5 million, 4.75 million and 6 million.

That’s awful. Ottawa will probably buy him out before that last year.
