SB Nation Launches iPhone App for Fear The Fin, 300+ Other Blogs
Fear The Fin is proud to announce that the long-awaited and much-anticipated iPhone app is now available to download in the Apple App Store. The app, which will allow you to stay connected to Fear The Fin and 300+ SB Nation blogs throughout the day, will be free of charge and available to all iPhone owners. Current user names and passwords will allow you to log in to the app as you would from a computer.
The SBN iPhone app will allow users to:
* Get breaking news as it happens.
* Customize your news with your favorite teams (Ducks), sports (badminton) and blogs (Winging It In Motown)
* Receive up to the minute updates to the stories you choose to follow on SBNation.com, regional sites, Baseball Nation, and MMA Nation
* Read and reply to comments.
Although "z'ing" through comments and automatic page updates will not be available at launch, SBN will be adding those functions in the near future. It is one of the team's biggest priorities. Furthermore, an app for the Android will be launched before the end of 2011.
For a wonderful video demo on how the app works, please click here.
According to FTF's market research team, bathroom breaks at work are expected to increase 300% for all iPhone users in the greater Bay Area during the 2011-2012 season, with family reunions and romantic dinners also seeing a bump in bathroom activity. "Number two" is projected to be the most commonly used bowel movement in the coming weeks, as local supermarkets and grocers struggle to meet the increased demand for Raisin Bran and other fiber-based forms of nourishment.
Sources close to the Apple store state that Steve Jobs' decision to resign as CEO of Apple late Wednesday afternoon was due in part to the awesomeness of the new SBN app.
"Steve always said he would like to go out on top, retire when all of his goals were achieved," John Doe told Fear The Fin during a high-stakes game of unverified and non-existent sourcing used to beef up an articles word count. "This new SBN app brought his career at Apple full circle, put the cherry on top so to speak. He couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out."
The app can be downloaded by going to the App Store and searching "SB Nation", or by going here and clicking "Download Now." The app is free for all users.
Any questions, feedback, or comments about the app can be directed towards support@sbnation.com.
Enjoy.

I haven't commented all summer
but this has compelled me to.
Why does no one realize that there are other mobile phone platforms besides iOS and Android? Sure, you get your app to a large portion of the market, but there are still millions of other users using WindowsPhone7, webOS, etc. who just feel alienated. I sure hope SBN doesn’t get lazy and stop with these two platforms. Rant over.
Not hating...
But the development of these things takes time and effort. They might only be able to roll out a few with the limited resources they have, and if so, Android and iOS are the clear winners because of market share.
Sorry those options don’t work for you, but I doubt it’s a stab in the back.

It's not on Android yet
Which is something I brought up here.
But Mark_Hanna made a good point in his response.
We chose iOS first because when we decided to create a mobile SBN app, we had more iOS users than Android. Rather than develop the two at the same time, we wanted to pick the largest one and focus 100% on the experience and customization of the app.
As an Android user myself I’m beyond pumped to get to work on that app. Our plan is to release the iPhone app, get feedback, make tweaks/enhancements and then bang out an Android version in a few months.
Here’s hoping the Android app is just around the corner.
If you’re a Blackberry user, well you’ll be in luck as they have decided to port over Android apps because their market lacks apps and appeal.
As for WebOs and WP7, well, who knows? WebOs is in a Limbo and WP7 still has a long way to go to gain mass appeal.

Android is coming by end of 2k11
We’re certainly receptive to other operating systems, but echoing above, our mobile development team is more committed to where we’re likely to see the most users benefit. That being said, we’re certainly not about to leave everybody else in the cold and we’re looking to improve our mobile web to close the gap in the experience so that even folks with Windows or Blackberry devices can reap many of the same benefits our iOS/Android users will as well.

I really appreciate your acknowledgement and receptiveness to developing for other platforms
I didn’t mean to start anything, I was just ranting. I refuse to use Apple products for reasons I won’t get into here, and Android is not for me. The consequences of my choice are clear, in terms of less/slower developer support, so my only hope is that your mobile devs at least consider making a WP7 app. If it can’t be done, that’s fine. We users who take the route less traveled just appreciated the recognition of our existence every once in a while.

Ha, that's part of it
Freedom to choose what to do with my device is great. I’m not a huge fan of the way they market their products. I find it disingenuous and misleading, to say the least. But I’ll leave it there.

I never said it's a stab in the back
just that it alienates fans of SBN who aren’t in the majority of smartphone users. I also understand market share, and that they should focus on rolling it out to the biggest markets first. But in my experience, apps very rarely get rolled out to a 3rd platform after iOS and Android. It’s very frustrating as a consumer. That being said, it’s not like I’m going to boycott SBN for not spitting out versions for every OS out there. I also understand the enormous amount of time and effort that go into creating an app like this. But like I said above, there’s a market outside of iOS and Android, and I really hope SBN reaches out to it.

I feel you man, I have a Blackberry. It’s a bummer. Hopefully they can make the mobile site do similar things in the near future.

I know what you mean
and there’s no need to apologize. I’m used to the lack of developer interest by now, so it’s nothing new.
Since it seems like SBN has come out and said they won’t support Blackberry and WindowsPhone, this discussion has become irrelevant, so I’ll leave it at that.

Does this mean the FTF podcast will be easily downloadable from this app on the iphone without having to search for it on itunes? Because I’m really freakin’ lazy.
If you just sign up for the podcast on iTunes
it should download automatically whenever a new one is posted.
