Logan Couture inks two year contract extension with San Jose
[Update]: Craig Custance of the Sporting News is reporting that Couture's contract will be very similar to James Neal's recent deal, worth $5.75MM over two years, with a $2.875MM annual cap hit. Capgeek.com has confirmed this and indicates that Couture will make $2.75MM in year one and $3MM in year two of the deal.
According to CSN Insider Ray Ratto Sharks center and Calder Trophy runner-up Logan Couture has inked a two year contract extension. As of this posting the dollar amount has not been released. Expect those numbers to become public by Friday afternoon.
Couture was a standout player for the Sharks last season, posting 32 goals and 24 assists in 79 games played. He finished first amongst forwards in +/- (+18) and third amongst forwards in shots on net (253), meshing extremely well with linemate Ryane Clowe throughout the year. Throughout the first half of the season Couture and Clowe carried the Sharks offensively as the team struggled to find consistency in their play, taking a leadership role in the locker room that was impressive considering his rookie status. Couture was always one of the first players to call out the team for not playing well, but most importantly, never failed to direct the majority of his critiques towards himself.
All at the age of 22. Not too shabby.
Couture's extension will carry him to the 2015 offseason, sticking with the contract pattern Doug Wilson has exhibited over the last two years when building his roster via free agency and trade. Couture, Dan Boyle, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Pavelski will all hit the free agent that offseason, setting the stage for what will be an extremely interesting summer. Only Couture will be a RFA that year, with all of the aforementioned players holding UFA status. This method is no coincidence-- both Devin Setoguchi and Dany Heatley, who were traded in separate deals this summer for Brent Burns and Martin Havlat respectively, either signed or were signed to contracts that carried them up to that offseason as well.
Considering San Jose's prospect pipeline is currently ranked 30th by Hockey Prospectus and 25th by Hockey's Future (pre-Coyle trade), it's safe to say that Stanley Cup window is something that ownership and hockey ops will be focusing on quite intently over the next three years.
Couture's extension finishes up an extremely busy offseason for Sharks GM Doug Wilson, one that has to be considered the best he has had in San Jose. The blueline is phenomenal, the top-six forward group is excellent, and the goaltending boasts a tandem of Finns that are familiar with the starting role, with second half Team MVP Antti Niemi being the clear cut starter going into camp.
Next offseason will have no major decisions from a free agency perspective. Only Torrey Mitchell, Jim Vandermeer, Colin White, and Andrew Murray will be UFA's in 2012, with the remainder of current roster players either signed or holding RFA status. Cap space in 2012-2013 may be a little snug depending on the price of Couture's contract, but it is far from unworkable; considering the fact that all major pieces will be firmly in place, San Jose should be in a similar position to where they were this offseason in terms of flexibility.
Although official word on the dollar amount has not been reported, the Sharks have a history of getting first time RFA's fresh off their Entry Level Contracts at bargain prices. Considering the length of Couture's contract, his RFA status, and the historical compensation given to RFA's of this nature by Doug Wilson, I'm expecting Couture's new contract to come in at around $2.85 MM per year.
We will update this post throughout the day as more news breaks.

Has anyone been more optimistic going into next year with any other previous sharks team?
I haven’t..
Drew: 'Oh no.. That is certainly the meaty part alright, but it's not the thigh..."
Randy: "No... that bone is NOT connected to the thigh bone..."

I think it comes from how stacked this offseason has been with great trades and excellent signings. Doug Wilson really isn’t holding back this time. Optimism is at all time premium…maybe we should sell some to other teams?

Great news!
Wilson is a master at these “bridge” contracts and I’m guessing the contract will be between 5 – 5.5mil. And seeing as John Thornton is his agent, wouldn’t surprise me if he takes a discount so there’s enough $$ to ensure the team can remain a top contender for the next 3 years.
It’s also great news that he’s signed this off season insted of next, considering there’s a chance he could spend some (or most) of the season playing on a line with Marleau and Thornton, if that happens a 35+ goal season from Couture isn’t out of the question.
It's obvious...
That players love it in SJ. This team is loaded (in the right ways) and ready to make perhaps a deeper run at LSC. If they win it within the timeline of the next 3 years I’ll be content for the rest of my life (as I am with the Giants & 49ers). If not, then I will forever wonder what could have been? Sorry for that moment of doubt. I’m as confident as anyone, yet I’ll reserve judgement until I see it happen on the ice, not in print.
See you all at opening night!
Go Sharks!!!

Both Craig Custance & Brodie Brazil
Said it’s 2yr / 5.75mm. $2.75mm for 1st year, $3mm for 2nd year.
Really, really good deal / cap hit!
This is unacceptable, Plank!
You were off by $2,500 in your guesstimate!

Not on the internet all day yesterday and I miss this!
Well, great to hear. Good to see Couture under contract.
The Cap picture is MUCH more clear now, and I think the 3rd line situation can be much more cleanly resolved. We can now look for guys on more than a one year deal.
Oh yeah, Logan Couture is a member of the Shark’s Organization.

Questions
So now that Couture’s signed, how much does that leave the salary cap before the start of the year? From what I understand it stays the same until next year.
And with the extension what are the chances or options still available for DW to do anything before puck drops on Oct. 8th?
After much thought, personally I’m fine with the team as it is right now (especially now with this extension). Just wondering if there’s any chance that anything else might happen? This way if there isn’t, I can at least finally just put my thoughts to rest and calmly wait for this new season.
Responding to all of your questions at once:
This changes nothing until next offseason.

raphelo, Couture was already under contract for this coming season...
so as Matt said, it changes nothing for this year. Next year it changes lots as now Coutures’ contract is a known entity.
THe cupboards are pretty bare in the SJ minor teams ...
I wouldn’t mind mgnt/ownership focusing on the task at hand so we can all part with Lord Stanley’s hardware. It does feel like there is a window of a few years to work with.
But with that said, at some point the lower ranks have to be addressed in a meaningful way or SJ is looking at the likeliness of being unable to be competitive after the window closes. With someone attention towards the draft and young prospects, SJ may even be able to extend how long the Cup window remains open.
Given all the contracts that are extended to 2013 or later, I think the Sharks can at least keep their draft picks for the next couple of years instead of trading away for more parts. They do seem to have a slight glut of D-men coming up after what’s already in San Jose if they wanted to move something in there for forwards depth or picks, too.
If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.
This is great news.
Another DW bargain signing.
I am wondering a bit, though, why there haven’t been any posts from Nina yet. Maybe dancing with joy so much that she can’t hold still long enough to type in a comment? =P

Shameless plug for my music.
Good news
but i would have rather kept Setoguchi than Couture :\ I think the sharks could’ve been better last year if the lines were:
Marleau – Thornton – Heatley
Clowe – Pavelski – Setoguchi
instead of:
Marleau – Thornton – Setoguchi
Clowe – Couture – Heatley
I do have one thought though, if the reason for DW to trade Heatley for Havlat was because he thought the team was slow, then why did he put Heatley on the second line and the two fast skaters of Marleau and Setoguchi on the first line? And then there are plans to move Havlat on the 2nd line this year to evenly distribute the speed on the top two lines. If that was the case, then why didnt he evenly distribute the speed last year in the playoffs?

Fear The Fin's Fifth-String Moderator !!
DW didn’t put Heater on the 2nd line, McLellan did, but that’s semantics. Heatley was with Clowe and Couture because it spread the scoring depth. By the end of last year, there was scoring to spread among the first three lines, but not necessarily speed. This year will probably be mostly the opposite unless one of the youngsters or a late addition brings a lot of scoring pop.

Great job on the timing, not so on the length
I’m glad Logan is secured before the season started by I wish it was for 4 years. He’s gonna be much more expensive to resign, in a couple years!!
its rare (or never happens, really) that DW hands out contracts longer than 2-3 years to young players
