Young Stars Open Thread: Sharks @ Nucks

  • I'm heading out on a plane before the game and won't be attending, but make sure to stream the game live at youngstars.insinc.com.
  • I remember the year after the Sharks lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the playoffs there was a rookie game against Anaheim at Sharks Ice, and the crowd just tore into these 20 year old prospects who had never played in the NHL. This is only semi-related of course (I doubt the Sharks get booed mercilessly as Canucks fans aren't bitter over the Sharks), but it made me laugh to think back on how absurd that situation was, especially since Sharks Ice is small and intimate-- if you're booing a guy, he might be able to smell your breath.
  • Sena Acolatse and Konrad Abelthauser have been the best defenseman for the Sharks during the first two games. Acolatse is an extremely fluid skater who moves the puck well. Abelthauser is surprisingly mobile for a 6'5 215 pound defenseman, and after an average performance during the win over Calgary ended up as one of the better players during San Jose's loss to Winnipeg.
  • Michael Sgarbossa has been hands down the best forward out of the entire bunch. He reads the play extremely well, is extremely active off the puck, and has that "Hockey IQ" that so many scouts like to talk about. His line has been the best line on the ice every single night, in large part to him.
  • Heemskerk was phenomenal in game one for the Sharks but didn't have the same performance in game, giving up 3 goals in 15 shots. The plan was to have goaltenders go 1/2 games (at least that is what I was told), but game two saw Heemskerk play all 60 minutes. No word on who is in net tonight, but if I had to guess, I would say Sateri and Anderson split.
  • The Sharks have 49 players on their 50 man roster right now-- players who are sent down to Junior do not count against that of course. The organization has a lot of players on tryout contracts in Penticton, so depending on whether or not the player in question would go to Juniors or have to play in Worcester (in the case of a college graduate) is important.
  • If a player has to be moved to clear roster room, a name like Mike Moore does make some sense for the organization. At 26 years old (turning 27 this season), Moore is caught in the middle with the Sharks-- he won't be playing with the big club this season unless there are some injuries, and players like Nick Petrecki, Doherty, Abelthauser, Acolatse are all guys who are much younger and will be pushing for those spots on the blueline. Although Moore is the Captain in Worcester, giving him an opportunity to succeed somewhere else while clearing roster room makes sense to me.
  • Puck drops at 4:00 PM.

Contracts

The Sharks actually have 51 total contracts with 3 that will slide (Anderson, Hamilton, Sgarbossa) and one more that should slide (Gogol – been trying to get confirmation from Capgeek on that one but they’re not responding).

Hoping to get a look at Viedensky & Sateri today!

OT - Niitty is actually "injured"

I know he was limping around at Sharks Ice…

From David Pollak
One more pre-camp note: Lingering injury could keep Niittymaki on sidelines for now with Greiss moving into back-up role behind Niemi.

Makes me want to see Sateri that much more tonight. The team needs to make a decision soon if Heemskerk or Sexsmith will be joining him in Worcester.

Is Worcester's entire roster still part of the Sharks organization?

I don’t know how this works.

Anywho, some roster shifts do need to happen. I’d much prefer to see some of the fringe guys on the roster get full-time jobs on other NHL teams (the ones that suck) and have the kids get a chance to replace some of our older players than have the AHL guys play the waiting game. Nittymaki should probably be traded ASAP, elsewise Greiss’s career may well be over. As good a goalie Niemi is, I feel it was a mistake with the team’s logjam in goal. Two years seemed like the proper term to me. Moreover, some of these tryouts at Young Stars are definitely worth investing in, and if there’s no space on the roster, they’re SOL.

Nitty can’t be traded if he’s hurt or can’t pass the physical. Anyways, I don’t think there’s a long line of GM’s waiting to trade for a 31 year old (I think that’s how old he is) journey man goaltender that’s been limping during practice at the moment..

DW will be able to trade him when he’s healthy somehow for something we need.

There’s no point in trading him when he’s healthy – when he’s healthy, he’s a good goaltender.

Maybe…he’s a better goalie than Greiss and no one is going to trade anything of value for him.

He’s only signed through this year, I trust him a whole lot more in the playoffs should Niemi get hurt or not play well than Greiss.

yeah, I was at the game a couple years ago in which greiss let in a super weak goal against the kings after the sharks had come back from a 0-4 deficit. never felt at ease with him in net again.

Greiss trade

Greiss is back on a 2-way contract so he might be the one easier to trade.

by Busterbuddy on Sep 15, 2011 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would we trade our only uninjured goalie with NHL experience now?

If Nitty is going to be out, Griess should be in the NHL, Sateri and Sexsmith/Heemskerk should be in the AHL and whichever of those two isn’t there should be in the ECHL.

Once Nitty is back, he or Griess could be traded, but I suspect Heemskerk or Sexsmith moves first, especially because Stalock will eventually need a roster spot, too, and Worcester is the only place we’re likely to carry three goalies (and the deal with Stockton makes it unlikely two of our goalies will be there because the Oilers’ goalie(s) will be there as well).

Nitty’s injury is recurring and “Lower body.” He has a long history of groin issues, so it’s safe to bet that may be involved. The team says he has recurring constant pain and that he may be about to undergo a procedure that’ll keep him out three months depending on what specialists say this week. If he does the procedure, count on Niemi and Griess until January.

by calixtus on Sep 16, 2011 8:56 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Can't or unlikely?

If a player is injured it is unusual that he will be traded, as teams usually want the player to play immediately, but it does and can happen. Most often in the off-season as that’s when they have some repair surgery or are rehabbing and it is certain the player will be ready for the season.

That said most teams are already pretty set in goal, and Nittymaki is not a hot commodity coming off an injury shortened disappointing season and equivalent goalies still unsigned. He could be sent down to AHL or Europe, and if they had injuries and needed him, he would likely pass waivers with his contract that’s not cheap. If he starts the season on IR I think he gets a waiver pass on IR.

He traded for Kent Huskins

when he had a broken foot I believe and didn’t play a game for us under that contract. He traded for him at the deadline and he never played for us that season/post-season. His contract ended that year and we then signed him to a new contract.

So yes, you can trade players who are injured. However, the injury must be known to the team acquiring that player. hence all the issue with the Smyth trade b/t LA and Edm.

Reid

He’s still looking good to me!

I really like Vaughan’s game as well…he’s one of two tryout guys who, if they’re signed, would report to the AHL (or ECHL) and count against the 50 contract limit. Not sure he’s done enough to or not.

by milanahalek on Sep 14, 2011 4:42 PM PDT reply actions

Might not count

Seems to me JP Anderson and Sgarbossa signed but were assigned to juniors and did not count. If they are 18-19, unless they play 10 NHL games they do not count against the 50 and the contract just slides out a year. JP even came up as a backup for a game due to Nittymaki’s injury.

It looked to me that Hamilton and Connolly finally played the games they should. Both of them found space and made things happen. Moon has been steady game after game and scored a couple of goals to rise above others. I think Vaughn has done well. Corbin has not had a good tournament, too bad for him as he is a PTO and I believe he will be gone after today. Sena is looking good!! Bay Area boy making good.

No, not really.

As mentioned above, I thought Reid and Vaughan looked good.

You can see the skills that Connolly has, he needs to get stronger.

You could also see the kind of game Hamilton plays, he’s going to be a good player – another year in junior should do him some good.

I also thought Wrenn was really good, he makes good decisions and was pretty calm with the puck on his stick.

That was one of the worst games I’ve ever seen Anderson play…

by milanahalek on Sep 14, 2011 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I endorse the above.

And I’d add that Acolatse is terrifically smooth skating. He definitely needs more time in the AHL, but he’ll be in San Jose someday.

I think Moon may have earned a contract today, especially given that he can go back to the OHL for a year and not damage our contract situation.

Believing in the Sharks, one photoshop at a time. GO SHARKS!

by Auth0r on Sep 14, 2011 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I left Acolatse and Sgarbossa out, they were both standouts – as was Albetshauser…and Doherty got better and better (though still not good).

Moon & Vaughan were the two I thought might’ve done enough for a contract – Vaughan would have to play in the AHL/ECHL so that might give Moon the advantage.

I do think that Wruck is gonna go back to the Oil Kings this season with a chip on his shoulder – I have a feeling that he’ll be drafted next year. He’s got some high end skill, he’s just so tiny!!!

by milanahalek on Sep 14, 2011 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Pre'y similar to my opinion.

Acolatse and SgarBOSSa are two great pieces for the future. San Jose might have a Red Wings revolving door of talent on their hands.

Definitely. A lot of our prospect depth is project-y and in Juniors. We had a total of, I believe, 10 AHL games experience between all our players at the tournament. Sateri had 7, Doherty had 2, and Acolatse had 1 and I don’t believe anyone else had any.

I’m still skeptical of saying San Jose has a great future. Sure some of the players look good but 3 games is still an awfully small sample size to go from “depleted farm system” to “great future.”

This tournament didn’t really do anything to convince me that the Sharks prospects are a whole lot better than the scouts think.

They have quite a bit of depth of bottom 6 forwards and possibly 2nd / definitely 3rd pairing d-men, but the reason they’re so low on in the ‘rankings’ is because they don’t have any top end talent in the pipeline.

Yes, a couple of guy can, and will, surpass expectations but I can understand why they’re ranked where they are.

by milanahalek on Sep 15, 2011 7:08 AM PDT up reply actions

The loss is irrelevant. It seems like some players stood out, and others not so much.

The goalie situation is going to be interesting. I feel like the organization has already made up their mind on who’s going where. I’m pretty excited to see Heemskerk, Anderson, Sateri, Sexsmith, and Greiss to be honest. And I’ve probably left some people off (including Stalock and his injury, of course).

Hamilton, Sgarbossa, Doherty, and Abelthauser were the guys I was most looking forward to hearing about. It sounds like Moon and Sena made some big impressions too.

Damn, I can’t wait to see some of these guys posting numbers in the AHL and NHL.

Havlet & Nitty

May not be ready for the start of the season. According the the SJ Merc., Nitty may require surgery on his groin and could be out for up to 12 weeks. So who will replace him and back up Nemo? Havlet is recovering from shoulder surg, but s/b fine by the start of the season. Not sure this team is deep enough offensively to absord multiple offensive injuries this season to our core. That’s my worry for this year.

I wouldn't mind.

But it depends on what we’d give up.

Eh, pass imo

Our top 6 is already set, and Kostitsyn isn’t a good fit for our 3rd line. He doesn’t PK, he’s not very good in his own zone, he’s a bit injury prone, and he’s got a 3.25 mill cap hit. i would’ve rather we just signed Wellwood on the cheap. I certainly wouldn’t want to give up any assets for him.

I don’t know if there is anyone out there with “sources” within the Sharks org. It always impresses me how they’re able to keep everything they do under wraps.

The only thing that would worry me about AK is his attitude (lots of rumors out of Montreal that he’s got issues). However, a 20 goal scoring winger would be very tempting as long as the Sharks don’t give up any roster players. I don’t really see a trade like this happening though, unless Montreal wants him gone.

Re @ attitude...

I heard that was SK not AK, but yeah – for me, this only works if we give up a pick and an ok prospect.

Would he get the ice time

he seems to want even after Havlat comes back? That is if Havlat stays out of the line up at all for beginning of the season.
Looks like he’d be a beast playing with Clowe on the second line. With Pavelski maybe not being able to do as well on the wing he might do even better with Thorton on the 1st.

Don’t think he’d be happy on the 3rd without a playmaker to help him out. And I don’t know if putting Havlat on the 3rd line would be such a good idea either. But then again he is good defensively and can maybe help Mitchell or whoever else out in scoring some more goals.

Marleau/Thorton/Andrei Kostitsyn
Clowe /Pavelski/ Couture
Mitchell/Handzus/Havlat
McGinn/A.Murray/Ferriero
Dejardins/Open

Havlat shouldn’t be out too long. Apparently he’s been skating for a month. They just want to make sure he’s 100% before he jumps into contact hockey.

Havlat is a playmaker. I could actually see him being a really good fit on our 3rd line now that i think about it.

I still don’t like Kostitsyn though. Maybe if we were getting him for peanuts, but i don’t want to give up any real assets for him. I’d rather we picked up a badass like Shane Doan or someone at the deadline before heading into the playoffs.

We put a skill player making 4 mill on the 3rd line last year..

Obviously though i wouldn’t want to do that unless we picked up another skill player to take Havlats spot in our top 6. I’m just saying he would work well on the 3rd line since he’s two way player with speed and playmaking ability.
