Sharks trump Canucks 3-0 as youngsters fight for spots

Photo

Plenty of story lines tonight.

First thing first, the Sharks remain undefeated, striking thrice against Vancouver's Cory Schneider, once on the power play. It was San Jose's fifth win of the preseason, a streak that means something in some ways but little in others.

The significance lies in the fact that the Sharks have meshed well, which is important considering the amount of changes they made in the off season. Second, the systems all seemed to be working as well as possible; the Sharks were 1 for 4 on the power play, 5 for 5 on the penalty kill and played a tight defensive style that kept Vancouver scoreless throughout the tilt.

"The guys are getting used to each other," said Sharks' captain Joe Thornton after the game. "It takes about two weeks, ten days, it was good to see the guys play well."

Play well they have, but it comes with a bit of a caveat: the Vancouver team they were playing was much different than the one they saw last year or will likely see in the regular season. The Canucks' stars didn't play tonight, and while the roster was full of NHL caliber players, it wasn't exactly the clash of the titans that the match-up will be billed as when the two meet later in the year.

"I think [the Canucks] are going to be better in the regular season," stated Sharks netminder Thomas Greiss, who stopped 25 shots for the shutout. "I think we played good though, we out battled them a lot too, an important part of the game."

In front of Greiss, who played an exceptional brand of his occasionally manic style, the Sharks dominated much of the play. Joe Thornton played a terrific game, showing off his nifty mitts on a standing deke then pass to Pavelski. Thornton would get another assist later in the game, feeding Boyle in the high slot.

The third goal of the game, though, came from an unlikely source. Although it was a near-meaningless tally considering the circumstance (an insurance goal late in the third period of a preseason game), it may have saved the career of a young forward.

Star-divide

Coming into tonight, Jamie McGinn had all but lost his spot to Tommy Wingels. When training camp started, McGinn seemed like a near shoo-in to start the year on the third line, but disappointing play from McGinn and impressive outings by Wingels put the former player in danger of losing not only that third-line spot, but a roster spot as well. Hard to believe, but at just 23, it seemed McGinn was running out of chances to stick in San Jose.

McGinn was having a so-so night, a performance that wouldn't have stood out enough for him to make a real impression. Then, with about five minutes of the third period to play, he scored a goal that should remind his critics why he was such a highly-touted prospect. Forehand, backhand, top-shelf over Schneider's glove.

"If anyone has been following him throughout the exhibition season, this was his best night," said coach Todd McLellan of McGinn, who in the coaches' eye, had lost some ground to Wingels before this game. "He played to a menu that he has to. He was rugged, he created turnovers off the forecheck, and he was solid in his own end.  He's a big man that can be involved on a nightly basis."

And the goal?

"If Ginner (McGinn) chips in every now and then, we're happy," said McLellan. "It's not about scoring for him; it's about all the other things he has to do. The reward for him at the end of the night is the win and then the goal as well, but he won't be evaluated purely on goals and assists."

While that may be true in principle, McGinn is going to have to score a bit to keep up with Wingels, who has three goals of his own this preseason. McLellan continued to be impressed with Wingels tonight, as the forward showed versatility by playing on three different lines, seeing time on both the power play and penalty kill, and earning the game's second star honors in the process.

The Sharks will play their last preseason game Saturday, October 1st against Phoenix. While many believe the last preseason game is more or less a formality, that won't be the case for Wingels or McGinn.

Preseason or not, Sharks fans should be paying attention.

I was listening to Jamie and Russy at the tank, and Russy missed that save until the replay. Very rare for him.

More concerned that Niemi gets back in time for Opener.

I like Greiss and all that, but there were at least 3 opportunities last night where had Vanc’s top line been on, they would have scored. Vlasic cleaned up one, the other two were fortunate enough not to have a Canuck anywhere nearby, giving Greiss time to recover.

That’s the way I’ve looked at Ferriero for a while now. I don’t really think he fits into the bottom 6 and the Sharks’ top 6 is full. If Havlat isn’t ready to go by the start of the season Ferriero probably gets to play with Clowe and Couture but where does he go if everyone is healthy?

by dcook on Sep 30, 2011 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Ferriero

I’ve actually been really impressed with him this pre-season. You can tell he worked hard this summer to add some “bulk” as he was winning board battles and wasn’t getting bumped off the puck as easily. I think he’ll start on the 2nd line if Havlat isn’t back and he can be effective on the 3rd line.

I think it’s going to be a revolving Worcester door this year with Ferriero, Wingels, McCarty all getting time – but Wingles has earned the 3rd line wing spot.

If Winchester is hurt or they don’t sign him, McGinn has absolutely earned the 4th line spot and will get some 3rd line time as well.

by milanahalek on Sep 30, 2011 7:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I suspect DP's comment about someone heading to Stockton possibly might have been about Benn.

Stash him there in case Havlat isn’t ready or breaks quickly and then Ferriero’s easy to recall to the team quickly.

My other possibility on that was McGinn, but I think McGinn may have saved himself from that fate last night.

Just because they got matched up so late in preseason because Vlasic was sick. Another game for them to get chemistry can’t hurt. But I’d be fine with Demers playing, too.

The way McLellan is 'talking'

He’s making it sound like Demers, Braun, White & Vandermeer are all in a battle for those final 3 spots – I think he’s full of crap here but whatever…I’d imagine those 4 along with Moore and maybe Vlasic since he got a late start, will be playing tonight.

It also sounds like the final cuts will be made by tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to see if both Moore & MacIntyre are waived (which they should be) since they’re both on 1 way contracts this year and will be making NHL salary regardless of where they play – I’m guessing DW might not really care at this point.

I’m thinking McLaren, McCarthy, MacIntyre, Braun, Moore are all gone tomorrow with McGinn, Wingels & Ferriero all sticking around for at least a little while.

by milanahalek on Oct 1, 2011 8:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I would think that the organization

Would simply have the players start the season in the AHL, if they are not ready the NHL yet, rather than waive the players. Both are legitimate injury call ups. If they get called up later in the season and then need to go through waivers on their way back to the AHL, do it then not now.

Also, I believe, MacIntyre has had the same salary in the NHL and AHL the entire duration of his contract with the Sharks. It’s probably one of the reasons he decided to sign with the sharks coming out of college undrafted and all.

by jMoneyBrah on Oct 1, 2011 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Moore & MacIntyre

Moore has to clear waivers.

MacIntyre will have to clear re-entry waivers.

Yes, that’s why MacIntyre chose to sign with the Sharks, I’m just not sure that Wilson wants to pay these two guys $1mil to play in the AHL.

by milanahalek on Oct 1, 2011 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Do they have to clear waivers to be assigned to Woosta in the preseason?

Meh, it sounds like they have had a lot of turnover in Woostah. It sounds like these are the payout years of players that may not have a certain future in the NHL. I think it would reflect poorly on the organization if we simply waived them instead of paying their salaries.

I just don’t see either players situation as a should be waived situation. I think both players can be of use, either as injury replacements at the NHL level or as trade pieces. The organization should stand behind the commitment they made to these players. $1 million shouldn’t be too hard for the organization to swallow in this case. So far as I can tell they are not hurting financially.

GO SHARKS!

by jMoneyBrah on Oct 1, 2011 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, Mike Moore has to be waived and clear waivers to be assigned to the AHL. Can’t imagine anyone picking him up.

I’m about 90% sure that MacIntyre doesn’t have to clear waivers to report to the AHL, but I am sure he will have to clear re-entry waivers if they want to recall him…

The org. doesn’t like paying NHL salaries to their AHL players. The ONLY players I can remember them paying is Kyle McLaren (whom they tried and tried and tried to trade) and MacIntyre. But, like I said, I’m not sure if Wilson will care quite as much this year – however, I’d bet he’s been on the phones looking for a taker for Mike Moore.

I feel like Moore’s done with this team. He’s probably solely an AHL player for the Sharks right now, since there are a lot of holes on that team.

He’s 26 and has too many gaps in his game to be able to fix them, IMO. Especially at his age when it comes to hockey, and seeing that Braun and Petrecki are better options anyway.

Couple of things

I noticed with last nights game:

The PP of JT/Patty/Pavs/Boyle/Burns is SCARY!!

Pavs must’ve worked on his foot speed / skating in the off season because this is them best I’ve ever seen him skate. I know he had a knee injury sometime around Dec/Jan last season, but his skating looks great!

I can see what Wild fans were talking about when they said Burns can be an adventure in his own end at times. I know he’s still trying to get comfortable with the team and with Vlasic but he definitely has work to do on his defensive game. Vlasic was very good covering for him.

Greiss has been outstanding against mostly 2nd tier NHLers. I hope he’s able to keep up this level of play when the real season starts as I’d really like Niemi’s number of games to not go over 55 this season.

by milanahalek on Sep 30, 2011 8:46 AM PDT reply actions

Burns

Just like in Minny, you take the bad with the good. He’s usually really good bringing the puck out of his own zone and his shot and quick passing on offense, especialy the PP is so much better than anything we’ve seen here in a long while. Boyle will gain tremendously from playing with him and fewer minutes in general.

I’m wondering if/when Niemi gets a chance to play and if Havlet will just sit out until game #1? I think Ferriero starts out on the big club as a possible fill in for Havlet and I like both McGinn and Wingles to make the club. Wingles has a great shot and McGinn adds speed and grit.

As for Winchester, he got dropped last night with one punch and I’m not sold on him unless McLaren isn’t in the plans this year.

Vandermeer has looked good and I love his toughness. Haven’t seen White play yet.

All in all, s/b so much fun to watch this team grow and mature as they come together this year.

by douchebags on Sep 30, 2011 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions

No doubt Burns’ good far outweighs the not so good…I’ve just heard a lot of people thinking he might be a Norris caliber d-man and I just don’t think his defensive game is there yet. He’s got the time, talent and drive to get there though.

Sucks about Winchester, he’s never been a very good fighter, but I really liked the look and play of the 4th line. I’m wondering if that single punch to the face cost him a contract.

by milanahalek on Sep 30, 2011 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't you think we're tough enough w/out him?

True, we don’t have a heavy weight, but Clowe, McGinn, Desjardins, Mashinter, Murray, and Vandermeer can all handle themselves. I guess if Winchester signs for the minimum ( I think his stock has dropped ) then perhaps they keep him. But that roster spot may be better used by a younger guy with more upside, don’t you think?

by douchebags on Sep 30, 2011 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

It wasn’t his fighting that I liked, I liked the way that 4th line played together. They were very hard to play against and once they got the puck down low in the offensive zone, it was tough for the other team to get it back. Momentum swinging shifts if what you want out of your 4th line and they were delivering. Even if he is signed, he’s not an 82 game player.

The way the coaches use the 4th line, I don’t know that a younger guy w/ upside is the way to go as they won’t be put in a situation to to progress or succeed – unless their upside is a 4th line grinder.

McLaren is injured and by all accounts out of Worcester, isn’t good enough and I don’t want Mashinter on the 4th line as I think he’s got a lot of talent and could turn into Clowe-lite.

by milanahalek on Sep 30, 2011 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

What about our third line?

Do you see Mitchell, Handzus and Ferriero meshing to play on the third line? I’m not worried about our fourth line, I think we’ve got the talent to score and shift the momentum (w/or w/out Winchester).

With McLellan’s comments about using the Worcester shuttle a LOT this year, it leads me to believe he’d rather have the guys who don’t have to clear waivers playing in the AHL rather than sitting in the press box in the NHL.

Ferriero, Wingels, McCarthy, maybe MacIntyre…they’ll all be on that shuttle this year.

McGinn has a few more games before he has to clear waivers.

You put him in Wingels’ spot when Tommy gets sent down.

I’m not sure Wingels is going to be able to keep on his current tear once the regular season starts. If so, you play him for a few games and then send him down to work things out in the AHL. In that case, Benn works out real well on the 3rd line.

by meetyourmako on Sep 30, 2011 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

He’s embarrassed and rightfully so. Still, I think he deserves to be on the team since he plays so well with Dej and Murray. Just as long as he doesn’t fight, but then again I guess if Vandameer isn’t out there, White maybe? All I know is that I want to see Clowe fight less so that he can have more TOI to score more. So if someone can help him out with that the better. Better chem vs say a better enforcer like McLaren. Don’t know what they’re gonna do.

by raphelo on Sep 30, 2011 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I might be the only one, but I don’t think the Winchester really got laid out with that one punch. I think he got knocked off balance and he did the splits while going down. I think that contributed way more to his inability to get up right away than the actual punch. Reminded me of what happened to Boyle last year when he did the splits

Frankly, I’d like to see McGinn, Wingels, and Ferriero in the NHL at the start of the season.

Winchester has played alright, but he’s also made some pretty stupid plays… and I’d rather have McGinn/Wingels/Ferriero doing that than Winchester.

Ferriero hasn’t been talked about as much thanks to the brilliant player of Tommy the Toddler, but I don’t think he’s a player who’s been forgotten.

I'm still not fond of McGinn.

He just doesn’t have that spark the NHL mainstays have. I’m loving Wingels, buddy’s stuck on God Mode, but McGinn just doesn’t do anything for me. Couture, Wingels, Sgarbossa and Sateri are the future of the franchise, and McGinn’s going to have a hard time keeping a job if these youngsters keep passing him on the depth chart.

It was nice!!! I can somewhat relate to the “lack of spark” however!

After he went a season of 60-some games, only scoring 1 goal?

No, nothing. I distinctly remember him playing with Thornton and Marleau for a while, and he still couldn’t git ’er done.

Well...

Washed up when it comes to SJS.

He could fit into another team easily enough, and once he’s getting consistent ice time he’ll develop better. But there’s no room for him at the San Jose Inn, unfortunately.

23 year old has been.

Remember that time he had 10 goals and 20 points on the third line? God, that was LIKE SO LONG AGO.

McGinn plays like he has a spark up his ass though… he often looks like he’s working the hardest when he’s out there.

He’s definitely part of the future of this team, but he’s not yet showing top line potential. I wouldn’t mind him on the 3rd line though. He and Mitchell seemed to mesh well.

It’s all confidence with him. He’s like Setoguchi, constantly in the doghouse with the coaches even though he looks like he’s working hard.

My take? He’s second guessing himself too often because of this “task-list” he needs to complete every game. They’re pigeon-holing him into a fourth line role when he’s really more of an energy scorer like Mitchell.

Wingels, on the other hand, is just being asked to go out and play his game. I think McGinn is the better player, although he’s less likely to succeed with his team. If he goes elsewhere, I bet he has a better chance of success there than he does in San Jose.

I’m chock full of agreement on your view of McGinn. I like Tommy-boy just fine and I think he’s an up and comer but Ginner’s got an edge to him and although he’s searching for his game right now; he’s never dogging it and I think it’s only a matter of time before he finds his scoring touch again. Tough to do on the lower lines but I like him to stay with the big club.

At the end of the 1st, the jumbo had the Sharks and Canucks logos, but read the following:

San Jose Sharks:
Phoenix Coyotes: )

Huh? Laughter ensued.

Bullet points.

- Sharks win.

- Someone say it already. The Squirrel is more than capable of being a starting goalie.

- Brad Winchester’s face < Kent Huskins

- As much as I like Burnzie, I wish he’d lay someone out now and then. Jesus, he’s a monster. Hit everything in your path, dude. You’re wearing pads. It won’t hurt, I swear.

- Dan Boyle is quietly being awesome. Even in the preseason, he sure looks supremely motivated. Scary thought.

that one turnover aside, he seemed pretty solid.

Agreed.

Though that was a really terrible boneheaded turnover. My reaction was like, “Alright Burns what are you gonna do in this situation? Skate back? Try to pass it off? Wait you’re not gonna…No don’t do that…wtf no! >turnover< omg…” lol

Still, it’s the preseason and he’s probably a little rusty. I remember at the start of last season Boyle Murray and Vlasic all made a ton of boneheaded mistakes which made Niemi look really bad.

by Khaaz on Sep 30, 2011 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions

That's what I'm afraid of

the team adding to more almost stuck in their tracks, don’t know what to do, oh shit I just fucked up moves. They slow down so much sometimes it actually looks like they’re not sure what to do but still thinking on what to do….? I see it more as a habit which the team needs to stop. Burns and co need to keep the tempo going no matter what.

by raphelo on Sep 30, 2011 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Those kinds of brain farts are to be expected in the preseason, and maybe even early on in the regular season. I don’t think we’ll see much of that stuff as the season wears on.

by Khaaz on Sep 30, 2011 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think they're brain farts

I’ve honestly seen it as a part of the Sharks game for almost the last decade. Which I think had a lot to do if not mostly to do with all their 3rd period break downs last year. They just have the habit of letting up on the gas and playing the puck out very fucking slowly sometimes. Then it’s a turnover or they can’t find their way out of their own zone. Which is one of the few things I like about Vancouver. They’re always ready to fly out of their zone. Not that they don’t give out turnovers, it’s just they’re always on the move and the Sharks need to pick that up at certain times in the game.

by raphelo on Sep 30, 2011 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Someone say it already. The Squirrel is more than capable of being a starting goalie.

I’ll agree, but with reservations….as I noted above there were at least 3 incidents that had the Canucks had their top lines on, we would have paid for it. Vlasic saved his ass on one of them.

Just being honest.

Griess is ready, but Niemi is better.

Simple as that, in my opinion.

If Niemi had been playing, the Sharks would have won 3 to -1. It would have been a shutout, and the Canucks would start the regular season’s first game down a goal.

by Nick! on Sep 30, 2011 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

That Vlasic one wouldn’t have been on Greiss though. The puck deflected off of Vlasic, and then Vlasic scooped it before it went in.

You can’t really blame a goalie if the puck goes in off of your own defenders foot.
