San Jose Sharks downed 4-3 by dominant Chicago Blackhawks
Coming into tonight's game Antti Niemi's career line against the Blackhawks was a sparkling 4-1-1 with a 2.32 GAA and .926 SV%.
He lived up those previous performances with some stellar saves, but defensive breakdowns and a swarming Chicago attack would render his efforts fruitless as the Sharks suffered their first regulation loss of the calendar year.
Joe Pavelski, Jamie McGinn, and Tommy Wingels would score for the Sharks, as Wingels scored his first NHL regulation goal of his NHL career. The Blackhawks top line of Jonathan Toews, Viktor Stalberg, and Patrick Kane were all over the ice and scoreboard tonight, putting in one of the more dominating performances against the Sharks top line in the last 30 days.
It was an up-tempo game from the drop of the puck, with the Hawks holding the large edge in chances and dominating the play. Duncan Keith rocked one off the post in the early going, and Niemi made his best save of the season when he slid across the crease to desperately snatch a Patrick Kane one-timer out of the air in the early portion of the period.
The Blackhawks would capitalize on their momentum get on the board first after a nice passing play behind the Sharks net. Veteran Andrew Brunette, who drove the puck down to the end line with Justin Braun on his tail, would kick the puck to Jimmy Hayes who wasted no time sending it to Dave Bolland on the short side. The red-hot Bolland would take advantage of Niemi briefly losing track of the puck and wrist one high short-side for the goal.
The Blackhawks top line would come back late in the first period and run the Sharks ragged with some cycling low in the zone. With San Jose chasing the puck around in the zone, Jonathan Toews would make a brilliant pass that sliced through the Sharks defensive alignment and found Viktor Stalberg all alone in front. Stalberg would tap one into the gaping net and give Chicago a 2-0 lead that looked nearly insurmountable considering the pace of the game thus far.
In the second period, San Jose would make those concerns irrelevant in a matter of 26 seconds.
Pavelski would score after Vlasic waited out the Hawks at the blueline and sent a puck to the net that was deflected by Pavelski in the high slot, and Jamie McGinn would score twenty six seconds later after Torrey Mitchell did a good job of sealing the boards and keeping the play alive. McGinn would corral the loose puck before driving hard to the net and bang home from a horrible angle that beat Crawford.
With the game tied at two, and momentum now favoring San Jose, the Sharks seemed primed to put a dagger into the United Center crowd.
As is the norm between these two teams however, the momentum would not stand.
After Chicago sent a dump-in into the zone, Niemi went behind the net to play the puck. The puck would go into a scrum and get kicked out to the sideboards however, with Jonathan Toews receiving the ensuing pass from Kane and beating Pavelski to the net. It was an easy tip-in for Toews, who potted his 24th of the year to give Chicago a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The second period was much of the same for San Jose, who couldn't manage to string together consecutive shifts in a row that pinned the Hawks in their own zone. The Sharks were held without a shot for around 13 minutes in the second period, with credit going to Chicago's quick attack and a lack of execution from San Jose contributing to the issues.
San Jose would get the first power play of the game that spanned the end of the second and beginning of the third period, but couldn't manage to capitalize.
Chicago would strike shortly afterwards.
Off the rush the ever dangerous Marian Hossa would slide the puck over to Marcus Kruger to open up the middle portion of the ice. Kruger would drive down the middle of the ice and put one on net where Demers lost track of Andrew Shaw who had no issues tapping in the rebound that was floating in the crease.
The momentum and chances would continue to tilt heavily in Chicago's tilt during the third period, but the Sharks would get that ever important goal to cut the lead to one with 5 minutes left in the third period. A shot from the point generated a rebound in the crease where Tommy Wingels jumped on it to pot his first goal in his career.
A late power play with Niemi pulled in the last minute of the game would provide some decent chances, but Crawford managed to hold the fort and hand San Jose their first regulation loss of 2012.
The Sharks definitely deserved their fate tonight, as Chicago outshot San Jose 40-24 throughout the game and carried the play for nearly the entire tilt. Chicago's top line was absolutely phenomenal during the game and soundly outplayed the Thornton line, giving Chicago a fortuitous head to head matchup they could rely on to both keep San Jose contained as well as generate chances of their own.
San Jose will head back home for a date against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Considering the Sharks play as of late tonight's loss should be no cause for concern provided they can get back on track this week at HP Pavilion.

Sharks looked very sluggish
Back to back games, 4 games in 6 nights with travel in between each game I’m not surprised they looked so….blah. It was a pretty bad game from the Sharks skaters from the get go. The score made the game look a whole lot closer than it was.
Niemi kept the game from getting out of hand and the line of Wingels/Mitchell/McGinn sadly was the best Sharks line on the ice. Another plus is Vlasic is still awesome!
All in all, 5 out of 8 points on the road trip is pretty good.
Awesome game to watch from the stands...
hope niemi gets a point on his assist to the toews goal.

The "Meaning Of Life" Game # 42
Sharks were sluggish. Nemo’s mistake was the difference in the game. Congrats to Tommy Wingels on his 1st NHL goal!
Two things about the end of the game: The bad = Sharks lost, The good = could turn off those Chi homers and not have to hear their, well, homerizing.
Game 42 this season: loss 3-4 at Chi (0-day-off-game)
Game 42 last season: loss 1-2 vs Nash
at 42 games this season: 25-12-5 / 55 pts, 123 GF – 99 GA (note: still under 100!)

Next 10 games, games 43-52 last season: 6-3-1

Sharks are 4-2-1 in 0-day-off-games this season.
Sharks are 1-1-1 in Sunday games this season, with 9 GF – 8 GA
Sharks remain on top of the West in the Potential Point Standings.
TMC is 2-2-0 with the Sharks in the first games of the 2nd half of the seasons,

Directed towards the picture at the top, good job Toews, you scored on an empty net. You are so damn impressive… Douche…

it was a pretty huge goal at the time and Niemi has a habit of biting us in the ass
funny, Toews referred to Niemi as the other teams goalie in the post game interview. not sure I’ve ever seen an athlete so committed to winning. He would have celebrated like that if John Scott had scored.
Ya, Toews is just at another level…it’s pretty impressive.
It’s interesting that’s how he referred to Niemi. I like Kane’s postgame comment better though!
On Niemi's 'save'
He said he didn’t know if he wanted to smile or cry and that he wanted to go to the locker room and “take off his equipment”.
by milanahalek on Jan 16, 2012 10:03 AM PST up reply actions
yeah..
I remeber Toews skating up to him and saying something. Probably, “don’t worry Patty cake, it will be all right.”
I like Crow, but the only reason we let niemi go was we wanted to keep Sharp. That was one of the toughest decisions for the hawks duirng Capocalypse.
was that the "i want to take my equipment off" one?

Brutal game.
Kind of painful to watch. We were behind one step on every play. We were missing half of the pucks, panic’ing when we managed to get one, and giving it away. Overall it looked like a very tired team up against a good team pissed that they lost a close one to Detroit yesterday.
No excuse though. Things will get rougher as the season goes on, not easier.
Hopefully it will just be one bad game, not the start of a slide.
Yeah, the whole “4 games in 6 nights” excuse isn’t going to work so well when they’re playing at least 4 in 7, come playoff time.

We need
more speed on someone besides Marleau who can score. Havlat’s out and Mitchell, good defensively but just doesn’t cut it. Even when the team is fully rested chi can still skate circles on us. I just don’t want to have to hope Niemi can stand on his head every time they play chi or even five to six power plays a game vancouver.

Aside from Niemi's blunder,
He was great tonight. I mean back to backs is harsh, and I sort of expected some guys not having their legs with them. I can honestly say that the McGinn-Mitchell-Wingels line is a fantastic combination, the Sharks’ own “young” line.
Back to Back games
OK, lets blame the poor performance on the above. And, lets call it it a good performance by Niemi, since he stopped 36 shots, even though his error was responsible for one Chicago’s goals.
But, one thing didn’t change and that was our power play. They laid goose eggs again.
Hawks played back-to-back games as well.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"
To be fair, their penalty kill is like, a 90% over the last 13 games, the power play, however, is circling the drain. Not enough pucks to the net, if you ask me.
by JBarrow on Jan 15, 2012 9:46 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Also, if you think that a bad power play is going to lose you the Stanley Cup, look at the Bruins last year, their PP sucked big time, but their penalty kill was good.
by JBarrow on Jan 15, 2012 9:49 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Our penalty kill is much improved
Also, I think the Bruins had the worst powerplay in all of hockey last season and that didn’t hurt them. Historically, the good 5 on 5 teams win in the playoffs; and the Sharks do that quite well.
Does anyone know if White and Vandermeer are actually still injured? It seems like White’s injury wasn’t supposed to last this long…
by JBarrow on Jan 15, 2012 9:50 PM PST via mobile reply actions
I'm not sure
But I would like to see White again. I know he wasn’t playing all that well but we could use his size back on the blueline.
Plus, he was turning into another Murray when he left. He was blocking shots, hitting people, it was great to see him improve. Just in time to get injured. Him and Havlat, man.

I really like how most of our additions this offseason made us a bigger team.
6-4 Colin White
6-4 Michal Handzus
6-5 Brad Winchester
6-2 Andrew Murray
6-2 Martin Havlat
I know there isn’t a correlation between size and success but I feel like the added height is going to make sure that we aren’t pushed around come playoff time.

I understand we were playing our 4th game in 6 nights, so...
I applaud Niemi for keeping us in the game at some points, but…
We just seem to not be able to find a game plan vs. Chicago that is successful…they just have so much skill and RIDICULOUS speed that we have no answer to. I am really scared about a possible playoffs matchup vs. them…I think we would have a VERY tough series and most likely a loss. Chicago, please stay at the top of the conference so we at least don’t have to face you in the 1st round. Go Sharks…
Go Sharks!
I don't understand
How a game in January at the end of a 4 games in 6 nights in 4 different cities road trip is any indication of how a team will play in the playoffs.
Chicago is good, no one is going to say otherwise but the Sharks team that showed up last night wouldn’t win a series against Edmonton let alone Chicago – mostly because, that’s not the Sharks team that shows up 95% of the time.
If anyone should know that regular season play isn’t indicative of postseason play, it should be us haha.

Yeah...so if we play them this badly in the reg. season...
that means it’ll be even worse in the playoffs – is that what you’re saying? ;)
Go Sharks!
agreed...
I’m not sure why the hawks came out flying like they did, and the Sharks stayed in the shallow water, but it’s one game.
Even with a pretty compelling effort by the “good guys” last night, the last two minutes were hold your breath and hang on tight hockey. Throughout the game I was reminded of how dangerous Sharks can be and certainly Capt. Nemo in the nets is never an easy puzzle to solve.
I’m pretty sure Viktor Stalberg is on drugs.
Capt. Nemo in the nets is never an easy puzzle to solve
I disagree. He’s no more difficult to solve then any other above average goaltender. He’s extremely valuable because he’s a workhorse and pretty consistent but he’s not elite by any means. (T-15th in the league in SV%)
by Briceratops on Jan 16, 2012 12:11 PM PST up reply actions
just curious...
who would you rather have in the nets ahead of him (Lundquist and Thomas aside.)
2.32 GAA and .919 Sv% isn’t too shabby.
one thing I just looked up and didn't realize...
it looks like Thomas spent over 10 years in the minors. Hard to believe isn’t it?
they only show that he’s played for 6 complete seasons with the B’s
No he has done really well this year
Especially at his salary. But he’s not upper echelon in my opinion. If I could have any goalie regardless of price I would choose Rinne, Rask, Quick, or Lundqvist.
All great choices...
yet, none of them have won the Cup. Funny, fans in Chi-town doubted our goal tending the whole season when we won the Cup.
Even the great Jeremy Roenick and Eastern Conference homer, Mike Milbury, said Chicago’s goal tending was the weak link.
Nah...last night was not that much different from other CHI-SJ games...
you guys destroyed us in the same areas you always do, and we had no answer. I don’t even know how we always manage to keep it so close…
Go Sharks!
The problem is that we ALWAYS have problems against Chicago
And the problems are almost the identical to the ones we had last night…so the 4 games in 6 nights is not really an excuse because then, the Sharks never show up to play the ‘Hawks? Chicago ALWAYS kills us with their speed and poise/skill with the puck, and we have no answer to that…thus, why I REALLY don’t want to face them in the playoffs…
Go Sharks!
I think I'd rather face Chicago than Vancouver.
Vancouver has better goaltending and a deeper blueline. But I’m not sure the Sharks would have a chance against either in a seven game series.

Always? You do realize that going into the game, essentially since we’ve gotten Niemi and the retooled roster for the last 2 years we’re 4-1-1 against the Hawks? The Sharks had trouble because of extreme jet lag and fatigue. The Hawks may have also travelled and played the day before, but they didnt play 4 games in 6 nights travelling on each of them.
The Sharks were noticeably sluggish, and even then it was STILL a game that ultimately was decided by a mistake by Niemi combined with a followup of horrid defensive coverage by Demers to let the guy past him for the 4th goal.
If the Sharks had any gas left in them, they could have made a half decent showing, as all the previous games have been between them the past 2 years, but unfortunately the schedulers have not smiled upon the Sharks this season. Multiple 4-5 day beaks and then something like this? Fail. The worst part is that even after this trip they don’t have longer than a 1 day break at all until Feb 4th’s game is over. So while i’m stoked to see a bunch of hockey, i’m also wishing for my team to get a couple 2 day breathers in between some of these as well.
and i'm pretty sure Niemi has been in the net for all 6 of those games.
You wouldn’t happen to have his GAA handy in those 6 game, would ya?
I feel like we need an informal poll
Who’s worse at handling the puck?
A) Nabby
B) Niemi
I swear, being a Sharks fan, it’s been damn easy to forget—except when Greiss gets the rare start, or when tuning in to games featuring Marty Brodeur or Mike Smith—that goalies don’t have to be completely inept at handling or passing the puck.
Not like it’s just Nemo; Jimmy Howard had a whopper yesterday. As did Nabby, though he ended up surviving for win #300 anyway.

Detroit dominated Chicage the day before
Obviously, none of the Sharks watched Detroit dominate the Hawks yesterday. If they had they might have learned something about beating Chicago.
You have to body check them and keep moving your legs. Detroit didn’t allow mcuh cycling because they knocked the Hawks off the puck by bodychecking them.
Amazing, it actually works, Detroit dominated them, and at least, gave me some hope that the Sharks might be able to beat Chicago someday.
If by 'dominate' you mean 'took them to overtime'

It rises out of him in a mist, this baby-faced defiant wrathful version of Pat Kane, escapes his bodily confines to perform satanic miracles all over the offensive zone. As the game between SJ & Chicago showed
The final score isn’t always an indication of how a game went.
Chicacgo turned it up in the 3rd period against Detroit but they were more or less dominated for a majority of the game.
When Detroit’s clicking there aren’t many teams that are better at puck possession and they do a pretty good job of making the other team look silly.
Detroit dominated the 1st.
It was pretty much an equal effort in the second and Chicago won the 3rd hands down…but spent to much energy and had nothing in the tank for OT. But the point about taking the body is valid and I was surprised the Sharks did not do so more. The one thing the Hawks don’t have is size.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"
yes, Detroit do that alright...
and I was really pleased with our Third Period against them and pretty much all of last night.. I think you guys were unlucky to catch a Hawks team coming off a frustrating loss/also in a back-to-back yourselves.. but I’m looking forward to our (inevitable) Playoff series..

Thing is, the Sharks sometimes don’t like to move their feet, and the rarely ever want to hit people. Unless they’re a diving little jerk named Matt Shaw. Speaking of, can someone make a ballerina GIF for that dive?
