Sharks Gameday: An Ode to Jarome Iginla

I remember the days when Jarome Iginla would have a scrap, two assists, and a game winning goal in the third period to spark the Flames to a 3-2 road victory. The man was like clockwork, a legend that seemed destined for greatness the moment he slipped into that blood red Flames jersey in 1997.

Iginla is one of those rare guys who was as universally adored by opposing teams as he is by his own, a player who broke racial boundaries by becoming the first black player to become Captain of an NHL team. He is an athlete that looks just as good in person as he does on paper, a man that will go down as one of the greatest players I have had the pleasure to see play during my hockey watching career.

A class act through and through.

That smile, which lit up hundreds of bitter cold Calgary nights, was a beacon of hope for both the fanbase as well as the city that feels privileged to be called Jarome Iginla's home. His charity and philanthropic work is well-chronicled and utterly stunning, his work in the community unparalleled. In a sport where the athletes are some of the most humble, caring, and family-oriented people you can meet in professional sports, Iginla has inconceivably managed to stand out above the rest.

I've never had the pleasure to meet him nor have I ever watched him from the Red Sea where he is most beloved. One can only imagine how the stories of his triumphs are told in the bars around Calgary, where tales of his 50 goal seasons, Olympic Golds, and playoff wins come to life with deliberate hand gestures accompanied by a "yup" from around the table as everyone softly nods in agreement. Those quaint bars, with their signed jerseys and pictures on the wall, tell the story of his career that no highlight package or stat sheet will ever be able do justice.

That's where he was, is, and will be forever infinite. A player whose performances are only fully enjoyed with a few close friends and a few cold beers as the night begins to slowly creep towards last call.

Iginla has never had the chance to raise the Stanley Cup above his head, coming close in 2003-2004 before bowing out to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. He's never had a chance to play with an elite center, instead being paired with some average centerman for the majority of his career that he managed to almost single handedly carry to lofty heights. He's never had a chance to play with an offensive-minded coach, instead being stuck with fire and brimstone old school throwbacks that emphasized the other end of the ice every time he went out for a shift.

And yet he managed to score his 500th goal on January 7th, in front of a Saddledome crowd who has stuck with him through and through, cementing his place as one of the all-time beloved Flames the city will always look to when they need someone to carry the torch.

Iginla isn't the same player he used to be, nor is his future in Calgary set in stone-- with the Flames entering into rebuilding mode as they attempt to transition into another era, and the nights of a fight, 3 points, and a game-winner occurring further and farther in between, there's no telling what the future may hold.

Perhaps the acquisition of Michael Cammaleri indicates the franchise is able to take another shot at a playoff run, or perhaps not. Whatever what the case may be, congratulations are in order for a player who is one of the best role models in our beloved game.

501 goals and counting for one of the best of our generation.

Congratulations Jarome.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by McGinn, Boyle, and Marleau.

Iggy always acts the "officer and gentleman"

in the rough world of hockey. There are those who have mentioned wanting him on our Sharks. He’ll make the Hall Of Fame on his first ballot.

This would be a great game to pop Niitty in there for a showcase start, with Nemo backing up. Both Niitty’s and Nemo’s successes vs Calg are the reasons for my opinion on this. If they do this, then I hope that Greiss takes the night off in stride, seeing it as a compliment rather than an “here we go again” thing. It could be looked at as confidence in Greiss as a keeper, and showing Niitty’s abilities for trade-bait purposes. And, both Niitty and his agent will feel better about getting some playing time.

If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

Officer and a gentleman - ugh

I’ve had irrational sports hate for Iginla for years. He actually gave me reason to dislike him this season when he whined to the officials that a Wild player (I think it was Nick Johnson) headbutted him during a scrap. Now I can only see his whiney whiney whiner face when everyone talks about how great he is.

To add insult to injury he scored his 500th goal vs the Wild and we again had to hear about all the wonderousness that is Iginla.

I was so wishing we still had Burns for that game. Give Burns one job – prevent Iginla from getting his 500th. It would have been a thing of beauty to watch and something for depressed Wild fans everywhere to celebrate.

In SJ- I like Vlasic would have that duty of stopping Iginla from getting that 500th. Love Burns but he’s not most reliant when it’s all about defense-defense.

Burns shut dowm Ovechkin. It was awesome to see Ovechkin so frustrated that he slammed his stick on the half wall after heading back to the bench.

I think Burns can be really good defensively when he is focused. ADHD Burns is another story…

Okay,

Iggy was an ass in the game. No “officer & gentleman” behavior from him in the game.
I retract that label from him.

2 game homestand… 4 points on the line. Flames and Sens come to town, I like our odds. I would like to see both Nemo and a back up get the starts but I have a very strong feeling Nemo gets both home starts.

Niitty's future

I think Niittymaki is pretty untradeable at this point and I don’t see how one game is going to prove much of anything. If any goaltender is in the trade mix at this time it is Greiss. He has far more upside – good performance to this point, a low contract and more long-term potential than Niitty. He will fetch a lot more down the stretch than Niitty. Then Niitty can slide into the back-up role and see action in about a half-dozen games before the end of the season.

by sharkster on Jan 17, 2012 8:32 AM PST reply actions

100% agree. I like both Greiss and Niitty but the only reason Niitty hasn’t backed up yet is because they are hoping to show off Greiss a little more… get a little more back in a trade. I have confidence in Niitty though- he bailed us out of a few games in LA when Nemo was apparently going through “a phase”.

Lateral move, IMO. Cammalleri, while a good player, wasn’t the answer the first time around, and won’t be a significant upgrade over Bourque.

And what is it with the Flames constantly bringing back players they’ve had on the roster before?

Behold: the double standard

Q: Hey, what do you think Iginla’s chances are for making the HOF?
A: First ballot, no questions. 2 50 goal season, 3 90+ point season, just a great offensive center. Big time leader.

Q: What about Joe Thornton?
A: Hasn’t won a Cup, so that might really hurt his chances. Good regular season player, great stats, but is he really worthy of the HOF?

Their career stats as of today:
Igiinla
GP G A PTS +/-
1152 501 541 1042 59

Thornton
GP G A PTS +/-
1037 314 723 1037 148

PS I know around here there are no questions about whether Joe is a HOF player. I’m talking about the larger hockey world.

Picklesnakebit since 2011.
@shampeon

by ievans on Jan 17, 2012 11:19 AM PST reply actions

Thornton will have more points than Iginla when its all said and done.

Thornton in my opinion will end up with around 1400 points. Maybe 1000 assists and ~400 goals.
Also Thornton will have won everything (and possibly more, hopefully with a cup under his belt) that Iginla has won. Thornton also is two years younger.

So in my opinion, if Iginla is “first ballot, no question” than so is Thornton.

by 408sharks on Jan 17, 2012 11:29 AM PST up reply actions

Absolutely. I really like Iginla, but there’s a lacuna around him in most people’s minds. He’s seen as a fantastic leader, yet his teams miss the playoffs, or bow out early most of the time. For some reason, he doesn’t get tainted by the underperforming Flames team that he captains, but Joe is a choker.

by ievans on Jan 17, 2012 11:41 AM PST up reply actions

Probably because the Flames usually suck. Jumbo has played on the Bruins and the Sharks, and has been privy to many very good teams.

That being said, I do think Jumbo is worthy of the HOF. That “choke” stuff is complete bullshit, to be honest. Even Datsyuk (HOFer, IMO) has a fairly low PTS/G in the playoffs… but he’s managed to win a couple of Cups.

If Clowe's going to Toronto, I want someone like Lupul/Grabovski/Bozak that's actually going to put up points.

Though we may wind up with a D-man like Gunnarsson or Franson. Possibly a package deal. Lots of possibilities, really… Toronto needs more grind, San Jose needs more speed and consistent scoring. This could work out well, who knows?

Depends what we get in return.

Clowe is awesome, but I’ve always seen him as a player playing beyond his ability, in a sense. He’s in a decline this year, and it’s entirely possible that he’ll become the next Cheechoo, god forbid. If we get pieces we need (prospects, steady defence, speedy forwards, etc.), it could be the push San Jose needs to be elite this season.

by Evil Stanchion on Jan 17, 2012 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

technically

Clowe is Wilson’s biggest trading chip right now. I think he’s a bit overpaid and not as good if it wasn’t for Couture. Fan favorite for sure, stands up for and protects the team like no one else. Don’t want to see him go but I’ve always seen him more as a 3rd liner. Not that I want him traded this season but I think DW could get quite a bit for Clowe and maybe Couture’s 2nd line becomes even more deadly with maybe a little less grit but say hopefully more offensive speed and skill?

by raphelo on Jan 17, 2012 1:25 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Yes

Because 20 + goals and 50+ points equals a 3rd liner.

Trading Clowe would be a huge mistake unless there was not only a clear upgrade to him coming back but more. There’s so much more to players than the points they put up.

by milanahalek on Jan 17, 2012 1:31 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

that in some ways Clowe is irreplaceable right now. As for his numbers like Seto I think he’s done well more because of the team he’s on. Not saying he wouldn’t be a great second liner on other teams cause he is awsome. I just think the Sharks could do better by cashing in on him (preferably next year if they have to. I would change my mind if they’re able to get rid of Havlat). But not every trade is gonna be a clear upgrade player for player, DW’s the one that takes that risk. Couture is gonna outgrow Clowe fast if he hasn’t already. And without him to hold his hand I don’t see him lasting on the team with his salary.

by raphelo on Jan 17, 2012 3:30 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

not every trade is gonna be a clear upgrade player for player,

A team that is trying to win the Stanley Cup won’t trade a player like Clowe unless it’s a clear upgrade, it’d be stupid to trade him for depth. The Sharks have exactly 6 top 6 forwards, moving one of them really isn’t an option – they need to add to that group not trade one of them.

Aside from that, he’s not overpaid and he’s put up these numbers w/o Couture. There is no reason to move him.

by milanahalek on Jan 17, 2012 3:35 PM PST up reply actions

I meant you never

know how a trade is gonna work out, no matter who we get. I still think that out of all the top players the Sharks have, Clowe’s the easiest to move.

Lines

It’s going to be interesting to see what McLellan does with the lines tonight with both Clowe and Desi out.

For some reason the Flames always play the Sharks tough, maybe it something to w/ Kipper still wanting to prove to the Sharks they traded the wrong goalie.

It’s probably going to be a very defensive game from the Sharks, hopefully Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski and Couture will step up their games as the Sharks need the two points.

Bogus Clowe trade rumors, of course, made even less sense w/#sjsharks Havlat injured. He did show up in locker room today – on crutches.

Ryan's on the block.

I hate the guy, but I’d give up a first for him. Especially come playoff time.

I dunno if you can call whatever the hell Feaster's doing in Calgary

a “rebuild”, Plank. That team’s been schitzo for years. “Our star players are getting old and we’re in 12th place, we’ve got to make a move for one last push!”

/finishes 9th. Repeat as necessary.

If all sports fandom is a form of emotional gambling, football is poker and hockey is Russian roulette.

^ Yup.

Calgary needs to shed its asset and stock up on picks.

Win or lose...

The Sharks probably will not give up forty shots against, probably garner more than twenty-four shots for, and San Jose probably have a decent chance at obtaining one or two points (it’ll probably be close of course – as per usual lately). All of these obvious predictions is because Calgary is no Chicago; San Jose must take these two points at home because it is rather imperative seeing how far apart they are compared to teams like the Blackhawks. We need to really do some improving if we are to go anywhere come playoff time, judging from the last game!

Go Sharks Go, anyway!

We have been swimming these wintry depths for years, succeeding at survival by feeding only upon perennial minnows of sustenance... will we ever get to sink our great white teeth into this so-called Stanely's feast, so that we may finally slay our insatiable hunger in frenzied celebration?

Oh and,

Regarding the ‘Win or Lose’ post – I know that the Sharks will not gain two points with a ‘loss’ – just to be strictly introductory-title correct.
