OT: SOPA and PIPA

Hey all, so I'm sure a lot of you noticed the blackout that some sites are doing today (like Wikipedia and Google) in protest to the SOPA and PIPA bills.

Niners Nation has a good post up that better explains everything.

Basically I want to encourage everyone to contact their Senators and Representatives expressing concern over these bills and the effects they will have on legitimate websites (like Fear the Fin or any other SBN site, as well as Google, Wikipedia, Youtube, etc.) and the internet as a whole. I've already done so.

Just go to wikipedia and try to look up anything and it'll take you to a page explaining everything better than I can. It'll ask you for your zip code and provide the pages to contact your Senators and Representative.

Really?

I checked the supporters list and did not see the NHL.

Here's the awkwardly-worded argument I made on Facebook:
This piracy argument is a funny one… Media outlets need to oppose it to keep their businesses profitable (nobody will buy if it`s free), but can`t completely eliminate it, since they`ll lose exposure (I wouldn`t know of any of my favourite music and movies without piracy). Companies are currently walking a tightrope to make you both love and hate piracy. :D

So basically, they’re going to feign bills like this to make you scared enough to buy their product, but renege the second it causes a commotion. These bills are intentionally designed to have horrible flaws that no sane human being would ever accept: They’re scare tactic bills destined to fail. It’s ingenious, really.

I think that it would be Unconstitutional,

due to freedom of speech, and fair-use (if used properly). Any censorships or sponsors of such things would have to face mass consumer boycotts, in addition, a lot of their websites will probably face more cyber-attacks (speculation, as I’ve seen it in the past)(disclaimer: I am not a member of any such organization, nor do I have knowledge of how to go about it).

Many members of organizations that support these bills, are actually against the support, and are quite ticked-off at the organizations. ASCAP and BMI, for example, have no business in the piracy campaigns, as they are a royalty-collection and distribution organizations only. They have nothing to do with publishing of media.

Fair use

Isn’t a constitutional right. This new law would probably overwrite that… so all of our star wars references here would get this site and nearly any other message board potentially shut down by this law.

Fair-use falls under freedom of speech, just like quotes do. At least the way I see it, as an artist.

You can see it that way as an artist

Except Fair-Use is actually a bill that was passed by congress and has nothing to do with free speech.

I say we hack the government and replace them with me.

Anyone else okay with this? Limitless power for Stanchion?

I am not a big fan of giving so much power to Stanchion. I am afraid Stanchion will misuse power and start letting Kevin Bieksa score OT goals in the playoffs…

Wooo Hoooo!
The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. "‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’"

From an email send to SOPA opposers.
