The Senators have been on an absolute tear in the month of January, going 7-1-1 in the month and getting excellent play from up and down their lineup. As we mentioned this morning, Milan Michalek has had an excellent season thus far, posting 23 goals in 43 games. He along with Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfreddson, Nick Foligno, Erik Karlsson, and Sergei Gonchar should post a good test for the Sharks tonight in a game that looks far more intriguing than it did when the schedule was released this past summer.
Some other notes to tide you over before puck drop:
- Craig Anderson versus Antti Niemi tonight for their respective teams.
- Andrew Desjardins passed his concussion tests and will be in the lineup tonight.
- Antero Niitymaki was assigned to Worcester today for a conditioning assignment and is expected to start both of Worcester's games this weekend. Considering Niittymaki's public concerns about the lack of game action, the Sharks abundance of goaltenders, and what we're assuming is a desire to clear both payroll and cap space for the stretch run, this move should obviously be considered a precursor to a trade.
- Kevin Kurz looks at the opportunity San Jose's young forwards are receiving this season.
- Silver Seven Sens sees opportunity for Bobby Butler to shoot more.

I support alcohol geekery. I don’t drink, but man do I get filled with savage loathing when magazines pan New World wines because the old world has “reputation” try Mexican wine sometime like Casa Madero and Monte Xanic. As for microbrews, well, that’s just one way of avoiding buying the beers that are all made by one mega corporation.

You really should.
With so many options in terms of inebriation, it’s almost impossible to not find something you fancy at least a little. Especially in this recent renaissance of craft beer and artisan food and drink, the reasons for you not to really can’t be that strong. Then again, some people just don’t care for the taste of it, which is fine. Just gives me more to drink :)

I’m not the only Sharks fan in NY though, I did go see the Woo Sharks take on the Albany Devils a few weeks back on nitty’s first conditioning assignment and I saw a dude in a Nabokov sweater… his daughter had one too. I also saw a guy in a Preds sweater… pretty awesome.

Honestly, the Calgary game wasn’t that intense, so they can’t say they were tired. Also, 3rd time in the last 5 games that Niemi’s let in 4 goals. I miss the consistent Niemi.

Niemi isn’t playing as advertised!! Our defense is supposedly better than last year’s!! Or so Doug Wilson would like to think. Problem is, he destroyed our offense in trying to sure up our D. So why are we giving up like 3 goals a game. Doug Wilson’s poor moves have also exposed Tmac and his coaching staff. In his first three years, Tmac had the luxury of very talented Sharks teams. This year’s not so talented team requires him to coach a little more than usual, and he has not been able to step up!

Well that was a shitty homestand….the CGY game was bad, but we won despite a terrible call in OT. This game was good, but we just couldn’t finish…oh well, it happens.

Honestly
The flagging effort wasn’t helped by Ryane Clowe’s injury. He does a lot on the ice to get the team going, even if he isn’t really playing well. But, I think the lack of effort preceded his injury in Minnesota.
Attribute it to “lack of effort” if you want, but cold streaks are really unavoidable.

Losing to one of the hottest teams in the league means we should fire everyone, trade everything that moves and hire the Zamboni driver as coach. But in all honesty, Sharks did a lot things right tonight, just couldn’t capitalize (holy smokes we need to revamp our powerplay). Oh well, early game on Saturday against the Evil Vancouver Canucks should be fun!

Overall, gotta say the Sharks were not strong on their sticks AT ALL tonight. There were SO many rebounds that they should’ve scored on, but they seemed to just give up every time there was a rebound.

With Clowe and Havalat both out, we simply don’t have enough talent to beat any great team. This lack of depth will probably come back to haunt us come playoffs…

Inept Power Play, or should I say inept coaching...
I watch every game closely, and notice no changes in the way they play PP. They quickly go to their usual spots and try to do the exact same things, as before. All too predictable and all lacking any creativity. Why can’t this coaching staff fix our PP!!!????
