Nothing like a game against Vancouver to get the juices flowing.
And nothing like an early afternoon start to put a damper on the whole affair.
Anyways.
On to some roster updates before breaking down tomorrow afternoon's action:
After going down in the third period of Thursday night's game against the Ottawa Senators, Tommy Wingels was officially ruled out of action until at least the end of the All-Star Break by Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan. He joins both Ryane Clowe and Martin Havlat on San Jose's injured list, adding to a long list of top-six forwards the Sharks will have out of action against the Canucks.
San Jose responded to the injury news by sending Frazer McLaren through waivers and recalling left-winger John McCarthy from Worcester. McCarthy has amassed 11 goals and 27 points in 37 games this season in the AHL, leading Worcester in the point scoring race.
Despite "The Red Scare's" ability to light the lamp in the AHL this season, San Jose's ability to produce goals at the NHL level over their next three games is something that looks like it will produce about as much real action as the Cold War did. You can Tinker with the lineup, Tailor the gameplan, Soldier on, and Spy a few seeing eye shots here or there, but the fact remains that without Clowe, Havlat, and now Wingels the Sharks top six is going to be a huge work in progress that is going to limit the third and fourth line's effectiveness by default.
I really like what Andrew Desjardins has brought this season and have been extremely impressed with that fourth line as a whole. But a top-line player Desjardins is not. While he may just have been filling that role yesterday in practice to see how it works out, that's a pretty good indicator of where San Jose stands right now in terms of health amongst their forward group.
Maybe it's just me but getting three points should be considered a fair expectation for San Jose as they head into the All-Star Break. With three games in four nights against Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton during an Albertan swing where they've historically had some issues, keeping your head above water in the points department and riding this injury bug out is just as important as expecting to win every night and letting the negative emotions snowball when that doesn't happen. Three points isn't good enough for the players, and it's certainly not good enough for the coaching staff, but that's a reasonable bar to set with two key guys out up front.
It's also part of the reason why San Jose is positioned so well heading down the stretch-- everyone likes to talk trade, but playing without the services of Martin Havlat for nearly the entire season (and watching him shoot an unsustainably low 3.2% from the field) is something that we are undoubtedly looking at as a big reason why they will be dangerous this postseason. It remains to be seen how an upcoming 9 game road trip in February and a brutal 17 game lineup in March will effect their legs, but the roster pieces are definitely there to paint a rosy picture as to what the future may hold.
The Sharks head into tonight 6th in the League in overall points percentage and have fluttered around the top spot all season long. With strong underlying numbers, and a focus on team-wide scoring that takes the pressure off individual players to carry the team, a clean bill of health from Havlat will essentially be considered a trade deadline pickup before the playoff run. That's nothing but a positive if nothing but a look a little too far down the road considering what lies in wait.
Tonight the focus is on Vancouver, and inevitably that focus will shift to how San Jose has struggled over the last two seasons against the Canucks. The Sharks 3-2 shootout win on January 2nd at Rogers Arena was just their 3rd victory in 12 games, with an astounding 9 of those games being of the one goal variety.
Vancouver comes into tonight struggling however, posting a 4-2-2 record in the month of January and receiving little in the way of production from their top players. Daniel and Henrik Sedin have been held off the scoresheet in three of their last five games, Ryan Kesler has one goal in his last five, and their depth of Chris Higgins, Mason Raymond, and Jannik Hansen have done little in the way of helping the team win games either. It's an intriguing situation for San Jose-- catch the Canucks off their game, come in as the underdogs, and pick up what would be an absolutely marvelous two points.
Winning that race to three would be nice. But tomorrow afternoon I think it's up to Antti Niemi to steal one for San Jose.
Prediction: Sharks win 2-1. Goals by McGinn (x2). Dude's a beast.

You're early

I hope the Sharks can overcome their ongoing problems this game, and not let Vanc. off their schneids.
If you mention ending your life, or show signs of self-harm, I will take you seriously!

Still really glad that the overlords here can keep there heads on straight
even though most of us tend to lose it after every goal and every loss.
This really is a good team, great in fact. The negativity, especially at the games is not helping anyone, why would the players appreciate and want to play harder when they get boos more than cheers?

Are they getting booed?
I have noticed some booing after the opposing team scores, but I don’t think those are directed at San Jose.
during a poor powerplay or when they get hemmed into their own zone they are getting booed

I’ve only been to games where they haven’t played awesome-ly, but yeah, the 2 I’ve gone too, there are people EVERYWHERE making comments whenever the Sharks turn it over. They also boo. Not the best atmosphere. Until they score, that is…

Anyone hear if McGinn’s gonna get a hearing with good ‘ol Shanny because of that kneeing incident?
I sure hope not. It probably goes without saying, but we REALLY don’t need another guy injured.
I like how you refer to Havlat in a positive way, whereas most people are just looking to trade him. Honestly, I think when the second line is back to it’s original condition, (Cloweturvlat….) I think it’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.
by JBarrow on Jan 20, 2012 9:55 PM PST via mobile reply actions
I assume we would have heard something by now if McGinn were getting punished, particularly with the early start tomorrow. So yeah, stupid penalty, but a minor is all.
The Havlat situation is going to be interesting, certainly—it’s so hard to know how quickly he comes back from an injury like this, when he gets his legs back fully under him. And of course he’s going to struggle upon his return (who wouldn’t?), which will unfortunately only fuel the negativity.
As long as he starts to find his stride around the start of April, though, I’ll be quite happy.

The Havlat hate amuses me
Guy horribly injures his leg in a freak accident and people throw him from the wagon before he ever got on. We have literally never seen him at full strength this season, be patient. It’s not like Heatley is ripping it up over in Minnesota.
Seriously. Heatley’s barely doing anything in Minnesota, next to Mikko frickun Koivu, not that impressive.
Plus, I always thought Havlat’s purpose was to be more of a playoff-hero, not a regular season one.

Patient?
Yeah, if there is going to be a freak accident, of course it would happen to an injury prone player such as Havlat. That is not a good gamble when looking at our lack of depth past our top two lines coupled with the fact we needed an impact player to step in and contribute straight away and continue to do so during the playoff push.
No, Heatley is not exactly ripping it up with the Wild. However, don’t forget, he plays for Minnesota’s vaulted offense! I assure you, if he was still here in San Jose alongside his original linemates, his numbers would be greatly improved – and the Sharks are not even that wonderful with putting the puck in the back of the net themselves at the moment. Then again, perhaps that reality would be slightly different if Heatley was back with San Jose. Does not seem like a dangerously radical conjecture to me (yes, I know ‘should have and could have’ is not something useful to dwell on, but I am just offering a different way of looking at the state of this situation).
No we have not seen Havlat at full strength this season, and I don’t think we will – his injury is serious and he probably will not be at full strength for a while. And that is completely one of my points. Our window for Cup contention is painfully near to being closed; patience is not something we can afford for one player who has not illustrated any significant reason why he should deserves it.
We have been swimming these wintry depths for years, succeeding at survival by feeding only upon perennial minnows of sustenance... will we ever get to sink our great white teeth into this so-called Stanely's feast, so that we may finally slay our insatiable hunger in frenzied celebration?

Havlat
The Sharks are putting up better offensive numbers this year than they did last year, and that’s w/o Havlat for most of the season. The team doesn’t miss Heatley (even if I kinda do, and let me add I’m perfectly fine with the trade).
Havlat is a proven playoff performer, he’s also put up well over 50 points in the last 3 years – if you’re not a fan of his that’s fine, but don’t presume to know when he’ll be healthy or that he won’t be an impact player when he returns. No one is going to know that until he gets back and there are a lot of fans that are willing to be patient with him, me included.

*I meant over 50pts in each of the last 3 years…
I’d also like to add that he hasn’t been ‘injury prone’ for the past 3 seasons either, he’s ran into some back luck this year.
by milanahalek on Jan 21, 2012 11:06 AM PST up reply actions
Havlat
His injury after three healthy seasons is just regression to the mean. We wanted regression to the mean with his shooting percentage, but we got that instead. Sadly, as much as I like Havlat (for his awesome play when he’s not injured, and for his ginger beard all year round) we’re probably going to see this off and on for the next few seasons.
And as for not seeing him at his best, we had him go on an 8-game assist streak starting from his first game in teal. That’s a feat that only Jumbo Joe has topped, when we got him in ‘05. We’ve gotten a sample of what he can do, and it was awesome. He helped Cooch get goals, helped Ryane Clowe and had that great give-and-go with Zeus. If and when his own shooting percentage improved, whatever line he played on would be great.
tl;dr: He gets injured a lot, and that’s bad. When he played, he did things, and that’s good.
I'm sorry
But you can’t put advanced stats on the human body…if this was another shoulder injury I maybe wouldn’t argue but it’s not. There’s no ‘regression to the mean’ when it comes to injuries.

Shot him dead and got the girl back in good condition….
check the mercury news website
The terrifying abduction of an 11-year-old girl began with a kidnapper’s gunshots in the early-morning hours Friday as she was grabbed from her San Jose home. It ended almost five miles away and 12 hours later with a single shot, when a SWAT officer killed 42-year-old Tri Truong Le, the alleged kidnapper, during a gunbattle in a narrow staircase.
The girl, who was in the kidnapper’s arms when the gunbattle started, was miraculously almost unharmed and recovering from the trauma at a hospital, police said.
The officer who fired the fatal head shot was identified by police Friday night as Mauricio Jimenez.

Road Trip
I was also thinking that .500 on this road trip would be a success considering the line up, but it really would be nice beat the Canucks.
I’m a bit more worried about ‘defense’ against the Canucks than offense…meaning, finding two lines that can keep the Sedin and Kesler lines in check – that’s going to be a challenge.
It sucks that it’s a 1:00 start and it sucks that the Canucks have been resting and practicing for the last 4 days but the Sharks schedule this year is a joke so i’m not too surprised.
I’m looking for HUGE games from Thornton, Marleau, Pavs and Couture, they’re all going to have to up their games if the Sharks want to come away with any points.
Sigh.
Injuries and a very convincing lack of depth to cover them – the Sharks would be in tough even at full health. Fate is just being a wee bit sadistic at this point.
